Easy homemade protein bars 1. Cranberry, Coconut & Seed Ingredients – makes 8 bars 120g rolled oats 60g vanilla protein powder 40g unsweetened desiccated coconut 40g pumpkin seeds 30g dried cranberries 2 tbsp sunflower seeds 100g almond butter 2 tbsp honey 60–80ml milk or plant-based milk Method: Combine the oats, protein powder, coconut, pumpkin seeds, cranberries and sunflower seeds. Warm the almond butter and honey very gently until soft, then stir into the dry ingredients. Add enough milk to create a thick mixture that holds together when pressed. Transfer to a lined tin and press down firmly. Refrigerate for at least one hour before cutting into bars.

Peanut Butter & Oat Ingredients – makes 8 bars 150g rolled oats 100g natural peanut butter 80g protein powder, vanilla or unflavoured 2 tbsp honey or maple syrup 80ml milk or plant-based milk 1 tbsp chia seeds 1 tsp vanilla extract Pinch of salt Method: Place the oats, protein powder, chia seeds and salt in a bowl. Add the peanut butter, honey, milk and vanilla extract, then mix thoroughly until you have a thick, sticky mixture. If it seems too dry, add a little more milk. Press firmly into a small, lined baking tin and refrigerate for at least one hour. Cut into eight bars and store in the fridge.

2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder 1 tbsp chia seeds 2–3 tbsp water Pinch of salt Method: Put the dates and almonds into a food processor and blend until they form a coarse, sticky mixture. Add the oats, protein powder, cocoa, chia seeds and salt. Blend again, adding the water a tablespoon at a time until everything starts to stick together. Press firmly into a lined container and refrigerate for around an hour. Slice into eight bars.

Homemade bars are easy to adapt. For extra fibre, add ground flaxseed or chia seeds. For more crunch, try chopped walnuts, hazelnuts or pumpkin seeds. You can also replace dried cranberries with chopped dried apricots or raisins. Keep the bars refrigerated in an airtight container. Because they contain fresh ingredients without preservatives, they are best eaten within about a week. Enjoy.

It has been many years since I last travelled back to the north east of England. However, our recent trip for my niece's wedding was exactly the reminder I needed of how beautiful this part of the country is, and it has certainly encouraged me to plan visits much more often. The wedding itself was hosted in the stunning, picturesque area of Beamish in County Durham. Standing there, surrounded by miles of rolling, uninterrupted countryside, I was struck by how peaceful and calming the environment felt. To make things even better, the weather completely cooperated, staying at a perfectly mild and comfortable temperature all weekend, a very welcome break to the intense heat in Spain. The trip wasn't all formal celebrations, though. We even managed to squeeze in a round of par-3 golf right on the hotel’s well kept grounds. I use the word "play" very loosely here! While my other half and our not-so-little angel both displayed some impressive skill and played very well, I struggled to make decent contact with the ball. I think the absolute furthest it travelled was a couple of metres away from where I stood. It's safe to say that before we decide to step onto a golf course again, I will need to undertake some serious practice to save myself from showing myself up with my lack of coordination! Exploring the Local Wine Scene Last month we began our journey through the wine regions of eastern Spain close to home, with D.O. Bullas. This month we head north along the Mediterranean to D.O. Alicante – a wine region many of our readers will have virtually on their doorstep. Earlier this year, we unexpectedly bumped into the same Alicante winery twice on our wine travels. The first occasion was in Madrid in May at Tim Atkin Master of Wine’s Best of Spain 2026, an event bringing together some of Spain’s most highly rated wines. Among just four producers representing the wider Levante region was Pepe Mendoza – Casa Agrícola. We had also encountered Casa Agrícola much closer to home at Winecanting, the annual celebration organised by Vinos Alicante DOP at Alicante’s port, bringing together wineries from across the province. So perhaps Casa Agrícola was trying to tell us something! Based at Finca Abargues in Llíber, in the beautiful Marina Alta, Pepe Mendoza’s philosophy is one that particularly appeals to us. After more than 25 years working with the soils, grape varieties and climate of Alicante – as well as travelling to places including Chile, New Zealand and Argentina in search of knowledge – Pepe increasingly came to realise that what he was looking for was already back home in Alicante. Old vineyards, traditional Mediterranean grape varieties, dry farming and respect for the landscape are now at the heart of Casa Agrícola. Its 12 hectares of Giró and Moscatel Romano were planted between 1920 and 1970 and are organically cultivated without irrigation on traditional terraces bordered by centuries-old dry-stone walls. And this brings us to one of the things we love most about discovering different Spanish wine regions: indigenous grape varieties. In this case, Giró.

It is hardly a household name, even among regular wine drinkers, but Giró is an important part of the historic viticultural landscape of the Marina Alta. One of the most interesting wines is Giró de Abargues, a 100% Giró that allows this local red grape to take centre stage. Pepe has gone even further with Fierroca, also 100% Giró, produced from three small terraces in the highest part of Finca Abargues. This is precisely what makes exploring Spanish wine so exciting. Of course we all know Tempranillo, Garnacha and Monastrell, but scratch beneath the surface and you discover grapes, vineyards and traditions that belong to very particular corners of Spain. D.O. Alicante has plenty more for us to explore – from its famous Moscatel and Monastrell to the historic sweet Fondillón – but Giró and Pepe Mendoza’s Casa Agrícola seem a very good place to start. Why Now Is the Right Time to Get a Retrospective Licence / Certificate of Antiquity for Any Work Done Without a Building Licence Part 1.
If you own a property in Spain and have enclosed a terrace, added a room, converted a basement or made any kind of modification — no matter how small — there is a real possibility that part of your home is not properly licenced. And in many cases, owners don’t realise this… until it becomes a problem. Across Spain, especially among foreign homeowners, it is extremely common to find enclosed terraces, glazed balconies, basement conversions, additional bedrooms, storage areas, pergolas, pools, internal redistributions or changes of use that were never formally licensed. At the time, it didn’t seem important. It was simply about improving the property, making it more comfortable and more usable… But very often, this only becomes an issue when you come to sell - and by then, it is usually more expensive, more stressful and far more time-consuming to resolve. In many cases, owners only discover the problem when a buyer hesitates - or walks away. That is when lawyers, buyers and notaries start asking the right questions: does the built area match the official records? Are all extensions and changes of use properly declared? Does the property include the necessary licences? If the answer is no - even in part - things can quickly become more complicated. Sales are delayed, buyers lose confidence, and negotiations weaken. Not because there is anything wrong with the property itself, but simply because the documentation does not include the necessary licences. Why and When a Retrospective Licence Is Essential This is where a Retrospective Licence, also known as a Certificate of Antiquity, becomes essential. It confirms that, due to its age, the construction is no longer subject to enforcement - protecting your property from potential fines or demolition orders. And importantly, it allows your property to be properly aligned with official records and, in many cases, incorporated into your title deeds (escrituras). The required time period depends on the region. In Murcia, the minimum period to obtain a retrospective licence is four years. In Almería, it is six years, and in Alicante it was increased to fifteen years. This is critical - because regulations do change, and not always in your favour. Many owners in Alicante were caught out when the required period increased from 4 to 15 years. So if you have carried out any work without the correct licence, even if you are mot selling, the best moment to deal with it - while current conditions are still achievable - is now. Pastor Mary Walker, succeeded Pastor Bryan Lowry when he retired at the grand age of 93. Mary says, although the services are in English, the church attracts people from many different countries, as well as a variety of different church backgrounds. The services have an informal, contemporary feel, and there is no dress code, so holiday-makers feel free to attend. Refreshments are always served after the services, so there’s ample opportunity to meet other people and make new friends. We meet every Sunday at 11am for our Sunday service, and also every Wednesday at 11.30am for Elevate our Bible study/ Prayer/ Testimony time. One of Mary’s aims is to put the church at the Centre of the community, by sharing the love of Jesus. In conjunction with the charity A.A.N. food is collected for the needy. This church is ready to help in whatever way possible. Cornerstone meets every Thursday, 10am - 1pm, to help people with their paperwork, such as Attendance Allowance, Carer’s Allowance, Ley of Dependency and T.I.E.s. The church also keeps a stock of mobility aids, which may be borrowed by anyone living nearby. The church supports the work of The Message Trust, which helps vulnerable people, in the UK. We also hold a monthly lunch where money is raised to help with prison ministry in Ukraine. WOW is held every six weeks, this is the womens’ meeting you don’t want to miss! It has a different theme, with many women from the community joining in the fun. On 3rd September this year, 11am -1pm, A CUP OF JOY AND A CHATTER, is being launched, it’s aimed at anyone who just wants to meet up and have a free drink and a snack, with music, crafts and games. Murcia makes an excellent day trip for anyone looking to combine history, culture, shopping and traditional Spanish food. The regional capital has a relaxed atmosphere, a beautiful historic centre and plenty to discover on foot. Start your visit at Plaza del Cardenal Belluga, one of the city’s most impressive squares. Here you’ll find Murcia’s magnificent Cathedral, a mixture of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture. Take time to admire the elaborate Baroque façade and the 93-metre bell tower, one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks. Inside, the richly decorated interior includes the tomb of Alfonso X of Castile and the Chapel of the Apes. From the cathedral, wander through the narrow streets towards the Real Casino de Murcia. Dating from the 19th century, this fascinating building combines several architectural styles and is famous for its lavish interiors, including an impressive Moorish-style courtyard, grand ballroom and ornate rooms. Next, head towards the Plaza de Santo Domingo, a lively area surrounded by cafés and historic buildings. Nearby is the Romea Theatre, an elegant 19th-century theatre named after the Murcian actor Julián Romea. For a relaxing break, make your way to the Floridablanca Garden, Murcia’s oldest public park. Its shady paths, mature trees and fountains provide a welcome escape, particularly during the warmer months. No visit to Murcia is complete without seeing the Segura River and the Puente de los Peligros, or Old Bridge. The stone bridge dates from the 18th century and provides a picturesque view along the river. If you have time, visit the Salzillo Museum, dedicated to Francisco Salzillo, one of Spain’s greatest Baroque sculptors. His elaborate religious sculptures are particularly associated with Murcia’s famous Holy Week celebrations. Finish your day exploring the pedestrianised streets around Plaza de las Flores, where you’ll find plenty of restaurants, tapas bars and cafés. Try local specialities such as zarangollo, pastel de carne murciano or arroz caldero. THE MILKY WAY
As just about everyone knows, the name milky way is a common name given to our galaxy, a vast whirlpool of stars, probably about 300 billion, where our Earth lives, it takes light about 100,000 years to cross it, so it’s pretty big. How many galaxies are there? We used to say about 200 billion, but not any more, we now reckon there about 2 trillion galaxies discovered, the result of all the latest discoveries by NASA. I’ve never met anyone who could truly appreciate the immense size and distances involved, it’s all too far from human experience, but still true. Going back to our not so little corner of the universe, my own father was a young man when Hubble discovered that our galaxy wasn’t alone in the universe - he coined the phrase ‘an island universe’, quite poetic. Hubble discovered a special type of star in the Andromeda Galaxy (a cepheid variable) that enabled him to place Andromeda outside our galaxy by a considerable distance and also to prove that the universe is expanding constantly. This means that cosmology was born in the 1930s, not all that long ago, and being a young science we have a very long time to wait before we can say that we truly understand most things about the universe. So when you look up in a very dark and clear sky at the smudge of light crossing over, what are you looking at? You are seeing millions of stars of all types forming one of the arms of our galaxy. You are looking through space outside our region, on to the next limb of our galaxy. Impressive isn’t it. If you want to see this, you do need completely dark and clear skies, no street lights, no cloud, for me this used to be easy living near the North Yorkshire forest, but now in Torrevieja it’s almost impossible without travelling somewhere suitable. How do we find somewhere suitable? That’s surprisingly simple, there’s a scale of dark skies called the Bortle scale and a quick look online will give you a map of our local area showing the dark sky areas. Just Google Bortle and look at a map. The lower the number for an area the darker the sky so 1 is perfect and very rare. The milky way will be visible from 4 or better on the scale. If you are going to make a trip out to observe, don’t forget about the moon, a bright nearly full moon will destroy a dark sky, so check first. That’s all for this month, enjoy stargazing.
