Focus On Publications: Celebrating 33 Years of Growth October 2026 marks a very special milestone for Focus On Publications, as the company celebrates 33 years since it was established in October 1993. What began as an ambitious venture has grown into a well-established and respected business, reflecting the changing needs and interests of the community it serves. Focus On Publications was started by the company’s founders, Frank and Jackie, and for the last 24 years the business has continued in the hands of their son and his wife, Mark and Lesley. Having lived in Spain for nearly 40 years, they, together with the long-serving team at Focus On Publications, have become well known and respected members of their local communities. The journey began with Female Focus, a women's magazine printed in black and white on newspaperquality paper. Over the years, Focus On Publications has continuously evolved, embracing new ideas and opportunities while retaining the values that have been at the heart of the business since the beginning. Thirty-three years is a significant achievement for any company, particularly in an ever-changing business environment here on the Costa Blanca. Focus On Publications has witnessed enormous changes since 1993 – from the early days of printed publications and traditional advertising through to today's digital world and the many ways people now access information. Growth has been an important part of the journey, with three new titles complementing the flagship magazine. Focus On Costa Blanca North and QFocus On Costa Blanca South are published monthly, while Focus On Professionals Services Marina Alta and Vega Baja editions are published twice a year. Each addition has brought new challenges, experiences and opportunities to develop, and the company continues to build on its foundations and strengthen its presence. Reaching this anniversary is also an opportunity to recognise the many people who have contributed to the magazines' success over the years. From the original founders and the current family team to colleagues, advertisers, contributors, readers, business partners and supporters, many people have played a part in making the story what it is today. As Focus On Publications looks ahead, the anniversary is not simply about celebrating the past; it is about looking forward with enthusiasm and continuing to grow, develop and respond to the changing world around us. From its beginnings in October 1993 to its 33rd anniversary in October 2026, Focus On Publications has enjoyed an incredible journey. Three decades of dedication, family commitment, growth and change is certainly something worth celebrating – and there is every reason to look forward to the next chapter.

We have recently returned from our annual holidays where we cruised around the Mediterranean. The destinations on the itinerary were beautiful but the one that stood out the most for me was Malta – somewhere I definitely want to return to as you simply don't have enough time to take in the whole area. Whilst on board I admittedly overindulged on everything the all-inclusive had to offer and came home feeling overfed and cocktailed out – time to try a bit of healthier eating and healthier living. But, as we have a couple of weekends in Valencia on the horizon for a music festival followed by a music concert, the healthier me may have to start after these events. The 9th of October is Dia de Valencia and the national day of Spain is on Monday 12th October celebrating Christopher Columbus discovering America under the Spanish flag. Both are public holidays therefore schools, banks and most supermarkets will be closed, so no doubt it will be busier than usual before and after this long weekend. The main upcoming event in October has to be Halloween. The town halls in more and more areas are getting involved making their towns come alive with attractions for all the family and lots of people opening their doors for trick or treat. I'm sure there will be a lot of venues across the Costa Blanca that will be holding Halloween parties, encouraging us to get out our fancy dress and join in the fun. Until next time.

Candlelight
Concerts in Alicante Bryan Adams Comes to Murcia and Valencia
Rock fans in the region are in for a treat this November as international superstar Bryan Adams brings his Roll With The Punches 2026 tour to both Murcia and Valencia. The Canadian singer, songwriter and guitarist will perform at the Palacio de Deportes de Murcia on Friday, November 6, with doors opening at 20:00 and the main show scheduled for 22:00. Just two days later, on Sunday, November 8, Adams will take to the stage at Valencia’s Roig Arena, with doors opening at 18:00 and the concert beginning at 20:00. The tour combines songs from Adams’ Roll With The Punches album with some of the biggest hits from his remarkable career, including Summer of ’69, Heaven, Run to You and (Everything I Do) I Do It for You. It promises two memorable nights for fans of classic rock and live music.
Alicante’s Candlelight concerts continue at Museo Arqueológico de Alicante (MARQ) this October, offering an atmospheric evening of live music surrounded by the warm glow of candlelight. On October 10, Disney Princess is performed at 18:30 and 20:30, followed by a Taylor Swift Tribute. October 11 at 18:30. Coldplay & Imagine Dragons takes place October 25 at 18:30. Candlelight: Halloween Classics rounds off the month on October 31, with performances at 18:30 and 20:30. Each performance lasts around 60 minutes and features music performed by a professional string quartet. Cartagena: History, Culture and Mediterranean Charm
Cartagena is an excellent choice for a day trip, combining fascinating ancient history with a lively port, attractive squares and plenty of places to stop for lunch or a coffee. Once an important Carthaginian and Roman city, Cartagena has an impressive heritage that can easily be explored on foot. Start your visit at the Roman Theatre, one of the city’s most spectacular attractions. Dating from the 1st century BC, the theatre was built during the reign of Emperor Augustus and could accommodate thousands of spectators. The excellent museum leads visitors through the history of the site before revealing the theatre itself. From here, wander through the historic centre towards the Casa de la Fortuna, a Roman house offering an intriguing glimpse into everyday life almost 2,000 years ago. Look out for its colourful mosaics, wall paintings and preserved domestic rooms. Another must-see is the Punica Wall, or Muralla Púnica. Built by the Carthaginians in the 3rd century BC, it provides a fascinating reminder of Cartagena’s importance long before the Romans arrived. The archaeological remains include part of the ancient wall and a later crypt. For some of the best views across the city and harbour, take the lift or walk up to Castillo de la Concepción. The medieval castle sits on one of Cartagena’s five hills and houses an interpretation centre explaining the city’s long and eventful history. Back in the centre, stroll along Calle Mayor, Cartagena’s main pedestrian shopping street, and admire the striking Modernist architecture. The Palacio Consistorial, with its ornate white façade, is particularly impressive. Nearby, the Plaza del Ayuntamiento is a pleasant place to stop for refreshments. If time allows, visit the National Museum of Underwater Archaeology (ARQVA) beside the harbour. Its collection includes fascinating finds recovered from shipwrecks and the Mediterranean seabed. Finish your day with a walk around the Port of Cartagena, where you can enjoy the sea views before heading home. With Roman ruins, Carthaginian history, medieval architecture and a beautiful waterfront all within easy reach, Cartagena offers a memorable day out for history lovers and curious travellers alike.

Charity Dog Show – Sunday 18th October
Dog lovers are invited to a fun-filled Charity Dog Show at Lo Crispin Tavern, Lo Crispin, Algorfa, on Sunday 18th October 2026. The event is being held in aid of Big Reds Animal Association and Paradise Rescue Kennels, helping support dogs in need. Registration opens at 10am, with the show starting at 12 noon. Entry is €5 per dog and handler, with plenty of entertaining classes to enjoy, including Best Rescue Dog, Best Rescue Bitch, Most Handsome Dog, Prettiest Bitch, Waggiest Tail, Veterans over 8 years, Best Junior, Best Trick, Young Handler and Best in Show. The Importance of Blood Donation
Blood donation is a simple act that can make a life-changing difference to someone in need. The Centre for Transfusion of the Valencian Community says hospitals need around 650 blood donations every day to maintain supplies. Blood cannot be manufactured, so hospitals depend entirely on the generosity of healthy donors. A single donation can be separated into red blood cells, platelets and plasma, meaning it can potentially help up to three different people. Donating is straightforward and usually takes less than an hour. Healthy adults aged 18 or over who weigh more than 50kg may be eligible to donate, subject to a health assessment. ADAPT Panto Antics
It’s been a long hot summer but there is always work to be done and members of the ADAPT Theatre Group have been quietly active, getting everything ready for the rehearsal season which has just got started. There is so much more to do than is immediately obvious to the untrained eye. Of course, cast members have been working on their lines, including their Spanish lines with the help of audio recordings. Songs and dance choreography are also worked on over the summer months along with costume design and the making of video sequences to accompany the action on stage. Those people who have already experienced our pantomimes will know that we always include a comic video sequence as part of the story telling on stage. This year is no exception and two of our actors, all costumed and made up, had to perform in record heat wave temperatures - such is the life of a thespian! And all of that, without mentioning posters, tickets and programme design, outlets to organise and town hall administrative matters to deal with. But you won’t see us complaining (oh no you won’t) because we are looking forward so much to the final product, the pantomime Aladdin, to be performed at the Geli Albaladejo Theatre, San Pedro del Pinatar on Friday 27th November at 7pm and Saturday 28th November at 12 noon and 7pm. 3 Easy Halloween Treats 1. Halloween Chocolate Bark
Ingredients 200g milk or dark chocolate 50g white chocolate Halloween sprinkles Mini marshmallows Sweets or chopped nuts Method Melt the milk chocolate and spread it over a baking tray lined with baking paper. Melt the white chocolate and drizzle it over the top. Scatter with sprinkles, mini marshmallows and Halloween sweets. Chill in the fridge for 1–2 hours until firm. Break into spooky-looking pieces and serve!

Ingredients 3 bananas 200g white chocolate Dark chocolate or chocolate chips Method Peel the bananas and cut them in half. Insert a lolly stick or wooden skewer into each piece. Melt the white chocolate and dip each banana half until covered. Place on baking paper and chill until set. Add two chocolate chips for eyes and a third for a spooky mouth. Tip: Keep them refrigerated until ready to eat.

EXPLORING THE LOCAL WINE SCENE Most people interested in Spanish wine will have heard of Tempranillo, Garnacha and Monastrell. Tortosí, Bonicaire, Arcos and Forcallà might be a different matter. Last month I wrote about the revival of Giró in Alicante. It got me thinking about some of the other old local grapes I’ve come across on our travels, particularly just a little further inland in Valencia. D.O. Valencia covers a surprisingly varied landscape and is divided into different subzones. Clariano, in the south of Valencia province, reaches down towards the border with Alicante and is only around an hours drive inland from Alicante city. Here vineyards can be found at considerable altitude and some almost-forgotten local grape varieties are being rediscovered. A couple of years ago we visited Toni Beneito at his winery near Bocairent. His project particularly appealed to us because at its heart is the recovery of two old Valencian varieties, Tortosí and Bonicaire. His winery at Finca El Cabeço dates back to 1880, but Toni has breathed new life into it, working with varieties that came close to disappearing. I’ve tasted both his white Tortosí and red Bonicaire and, for me, they’re proof that these grapes deserve to be taken seriously. Toni is making very good wine from them. Another producer who has caught our attention is Javi Revert, based at La Font de la Figuera, also in Clariano. Javi grew up in the village and local varieties are central to his project. He works with grapes including Arcos, Forcallà and Bonicaire, alongside more familiar varieties such as Monastrell and Garnacha. He is restoring old mountain vineyards and has also replanted traditional varieties on steep parcels that had been abandoned decades ago because they were difficult to work and produced low yields. What I like about both projects is that these grapes aren’t being treated as museum pieces. Toni and Javi believe they can make good wine from them today and, in doing so, give them a future. For me, that’s one of the pleasures of discovering Spanish wine. Look beyond the familiar names and you find local grapes that tell us something about the places they come from. Here on the Costa Blanca, some of those discoveries are remarkably close to home. Future Solar Eclipse Events
This month I’m giving a little news update, and I’ll start with the anticlimax of the eclipse. For most of us in this area the much vaunted eclipse was a huge disappointment, with it happening so late in the day cloud ruined our view of it. Don’t worry though, there will soon be another one. It’s on August 2 2027 in the morning. Totality will be all along the southern Andalusian coast from Cadiz in the west to Almeria in the East. The exact time will depend on where you are, but around 10.45 will be the middle of the whole event. Next comes another eclipse, the one I’m waiting for, It’s called an annular solar eclipse. This is on the 26 January 2028 quite late in the day but it’s winter so there is a greater chance of clear skies at sunset. What is an annular eclipse? It’s where the disk of the Moon doesn’t quite cover the disc of the Sun. The Moon isn’t a constant distance from the Earth, it varies by about 50,000 kilometres, this is because the moon orbits Earth in an elliptical orbit, not a circular one. If an eclipse happens when the moon is further away than normal, the disk appears smaller to us. This is an annular eclipse. I’m looking forward to it because it will give us a chance to see details of the Suns circumference that are not normally visible. How do we use a telescope to look at the Sun? After all the news reports recently about the massive dangers of looking at the sun with the naked eye, (excellent advice), you would be right to suppose that using an ordinary telescope or binoculars would be much worse, and you’d be correct. It conjures up thoughts of smoke coming from your head where your eyes used to be. Most of us use a very special kind of filter that is attached to the objective or big end of a telescope, this cuts out nearly all the light and protects us. Anyone can buy these from a decent astronomy store on line. If using one for the first time don’t forget to cover the little finder scope to prevent accidents. Next is pointing the scope at the Sun, you can’t use the finder scope, so put a low power or wide field eyepiece in and use the shadow of the sun made by the ‘scope to get it close to correct. Lastly, take very good care of your filter, even a pin hole will make it dangerous to use. I seem to have run out of space for more news so we’ll have to wait for next month.
