A Creative Space

in the Heart of Benijófar

A portrait taking shape in oils, a landscape emerging in watercolour, someone picking up a pencil for the first time. At El Estudio in Benijófar, no two easels tell quite the same story. This welcoming studio offers adults the chance to slow down, get creative and enjoy time away from everyday routines. Its weekly drawing and painting classes bring together beginners and experienced artists, all working at their own pace. Unlike classes where everyone follows the same project, students decide what they want to paint or draw. From charcoal and pencil to watercolour, acrylics and oils, the choice is theirs. And for anyone unsure where to begin, Seán is there to help them take the first step. The classes combine the fun of a sociable group with individual guidance. Seán moves from easel to easel, helping students improve their drawing, understand colour, tackle a portrait or build confidence with a brush. Monthly themed workshops offer chances to try new techniques and subjects. There is plenty of conversation and laughter. Learning matters, but so does enjoying the process. El Estudio is run by Irish artist Seán, an award-winning painter who has exhibited in Madrid, Dublin, Miami and Marbella. Group exhibitions are planned in Italy and London in the coming year, and his work is held in private collections worldwide. At the start of the New Year, a public gallery will open at the front of El Estudio, offering Seán’s original paintings in a range of sizes and fine art prints of local scenes. Beyond the gallery, the space opens into a spacious, creative classroom. Interested in classes? WhatsApp 602 441 564 or email elestudiobenijofar@gmail.com. For class times, visit the website or Facebook page by searching El Estudio Benijófar. We look forward to welcoming you!

Our recent trips to Valencia were both amazing, very different in their own ways but none the less equally entertaining. Our first was to Visorfest watching some classic bands including The Damned, Ocean Colour Scene and Manic Street Preachers. We spent the weekend with my sister and brother in law who are quite the experts on the wine scene and enlightened us to a wine tasting evening... their knowledge and enthusiasm was quite astounding and we are looking forward to more occasions of this sort. We ventured back to Valencia the following weekend with friends of ours to see Transvision Vamp in concert. This was held in a much smaller venue which made the concert feel almost personal, and the friendliness of other attendees was lovely. We chatted to so many people, which by the end of the night almost felt like we had been friends for ages. That is all our travelling done for the rest of this year but I am constantly on the look out for concerts and festivals in our area as both myself and my other half have definitely got the bug now. The Autumn / Winter issue of Professional Services will be coming out at the end of this month and there is still some availability for any companies wishing to be featured...please get in touch as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. Until next time.

See It For Yourself: Jazmin Show Apartment Now Open for Visits at Ciudad Patricia We couldn’t be more thrilled to announce that our Jazmin Show apartment is ready for visiting. It’s the perfect way to really get a feel for what living in a Jazmin apartment could be like. Because construction is actively ongoing on-site, visits are strictly by appointment only on Fridays between 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm. To ensure total safety for our visitors, we temporarily pause building work during these dedicated hours. While the modern Jazmin development represents an exciting new chapter, it is nestled within the mature, beautifully established Ciudad Patricia Independent Senior Living resort. Here, new residents join a welcoming, thriving international community— primarily British, Dutch, and German—designed specifically for independent seniors who cherish their freedom but value the comforting safety net and care services Ciudad Patricia affords. These stylish apartments are sold on a Lifetime Right of Use (usufructo) basis, making prices highly competitive with other new-build properties in the local vicinity. Don't miss the chance to picture your future here. To book your exclusive Friday viewing appointment, contact Alison Eaves at (+34) 673 064 288 (including WhatsApp), email a.eaves@ciudadpatricia.com, or visit https://jazmin.ciudadpatricia.com. Spain Floods: Be Prepared Protect Yourself and Your Animals

The recent flooding caused by Storm DANA Adam across eastern Spain is a stark reminder of how quickly lives can be turned upside down. With experts saying that flooding affecting communities in Valencia and Alicante will likely happen more frequently, evacuations and rescues have highlighted the importance of being prepared. When an emergency strikes, there may be little time to gather essential belongings, so preparation today could make things a lot less stressful. Of course we all hope never to be in this situation but as they say, 'better safe than sorry'. An emergency grab bag should at least include: Photocopies of passports, TIE, driver's licenses, medical cards, house deeds, rental contract, insurance policies, animal passports, medication, spare house and car keys, power bank and spare charging cables, and some cash. Prepare an Emergency Box Keep an emergency box or bag somewhere accessible, preferably near an exit and above ground level. Make sure everyone in your household knows where it is. Essential items you should have in stock in case you get isolated or there are cuts in water and electric supply should include: · Drinking water and non-perishable food for at least three days. · First-aid kit and essential medicines. · Torch, spare batteries and a battery-powered or wind-up radio. · Fully charged power bank and mobile phone charging cables. A solar powered power bank is also a good option here in Spain. · Copies of passports, identification, insurance documents and important telephone numbers in a waterproof bag. · Cash, warm clothing, waterproof jackets, sturdy footwear and blankets.

· Hygiene products, wet wipes, hand sanitiser and essential toiletries. · Whistle, multi-tool and waterproof bags for valuables. Don't Forget Your Animals Pets are family, and they must be included in every emergency plan. Never wait until floodwater is rising to decide how you will evacuate your animals. Prepare a separate animal emergency kit containing: · At least a three day supply of food and drinking water. · Food and water bowls, plus a supply of any essential medication. · Leads, harnesses, collars and identification tags. · Secure pet carriers or crates for cats, small animals and nervous pets. · Muzzles where appropriate, especially if required for safe transport. · Towels, blankets and familiar toys to reduce stress. · Copies of vaccination records, microchip details and recent photographs. · Contact details for your vet and suitable emergency accommodation. · For larger animals, arrange safe transport and identify suitable evacuation locations in advance. Know What to Do Monitor official weather alerts and follow instructions from emergency services. Identify evacuation routes and higher ground before flooding begins. Never walk or drive through floodwater, and never enter a flooded garage or basement to retrieve belongings. Most importantly, evacuate early and take your animals with you. Keep emergency supplies ready, check on vulnerable neighbours and remember: possessions can be replaced, but lives cannot. If you find yourself in danger, don't hesitate, call 112.

Driving in Spain? Make sure you're up to date with the latest traffic rules New traffic regulations came into force in Spain on 1 October 2026, introducing changes that affect motorists, motorcyclists, cyclists and electric scooter users. The updated rules aim to improve road safety, particularly for vulnerable road users. Here are some of the main changes: • Overtaking vulnerable road users: Drivers must leave at least 1.5 metres of space when overtaking cyclists and other vulnerable road users. On roads outside urban areas, they must also reduce their speed to at least 20 km/h below the speed limit. On roads with more than one lane in each direction, drivers must change lanes completely when overtaking. • Motorcycle safety: Motorcyclists and moped riders, including passengers, must now wear protective gloves on roads outside urban areas and closed footwear on all roads. • Electric scooters: The minimum age for riding an electric scooter is now 15. Helmets are compulsory, and riders must use reflective or illuminated equipment at night or in poor visibility. • Seat belt requirements: Previous exemptions for certain professional drivers, including taxi drivers, goods vehicle drivers and driving instructors, have been removed. • Driving in snowy conditions: Overtaking is now prohibited on motorways and dual carriageways when snow makes driving conditions difficult. Drivers must keep to the right, leaving lanes clear for emergency services and snow-clearing vehicles. At Generali Expatriates, we make insurance easier for international residents in Spain, with multilingual support and a network of over 200 agents and brokers. Reclaiming Your World: Why Independent Mobility Matters More Than Ever Mobility is more than just the ability to move from one place to another; it is the cornerstone of personal freedom, dignity, and quality of life. For many seniors, individuals in rehabilitation, and those living with reduced mobility, the world can sometimes feel like it is shrinking. Simple daily routines - like visiting a local market, enjoying a sunny afternoon on the coast, or meeting friends for coffee - can begin to feel out of reach. At NicoMobility, we believe that limited mobility should never mean a limited life. True independence means navigating your day on your own terms, without having to rely constantly on the availability of others. Modern personal mobility solutions have evolved far beyond mere medical necessities; they are tools of empowerment. Upgrading to a specialised electric mobility scooter or an ergonomic 3- or 4-wheel walker transforms how you interact with your community. These innovations are carefully engineered to distribute weight evenly, maximise stability, and provide the physical reassurance needed to step out with confidence. Choosing the right equipment is a deeply personal journey, as no two paths to independence are the same. Whether you need a compact, folding companion for quick errands or a robust, double-seat scooter for shared outdoor adventures, the right fit changes everything. Investing in your mobility is an investment in your mental and emotional well-being - it reopens doors to social connection, fresh air, and spontaneous adventures. Your world is waiting to be rediscovered - and with the right support, you can explore it completely on your own schedule. NicoMobility is situated within the Home and Garden stores in Torrevieja, La Marina and Quesada, and you can visit their website for more information www.nicomobility.com.

A Day Trip to ...

Elche: Palms, History and Culture

Elche (Elx) makes a wonderful day trip, offering a unique combination of history, culture and beautiful green spaces. Best known for its extraordinary palm grove, the city is home to one of Spain’s most unusual landscapes and is ideal for exploring at a relaxed pace. Begin your visit in the Palmeral of Elche, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the city’s greatest attraction. With thousands of date palms spread across gardens, pathways and historic palm orchards, it is an atmospheric place to explore on foot. The Huerto del Cura, or Priest’s Garden, is particularly worth visiting. This beautifully maintained garden contains exotic plants, ponds and the famous Imperial Palm, a spectacular multi-trunked palm named in honour of Empress Elisabeth of Austria, who visited Elche in 1894. From the palm groves, head towards the historic centre and the Basilica of Santa María. Built on the site of earlier mosques and churches, this impressive Baroque building dominates the skyline. Its tower provides wonderful views over Elche and the surrounding countryside. The basilica is also closely associated with the Mystery Play of Elche, a centuries-old religious drama performed annually and recognised by UNESCO as an example of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Another must-see is the Palace of Altamira, an impressive medieval fortress beside the Vinalopó River. Once home to noble families, the palace now houses the Archaeology and History Museum of Elche, where exhibitions reveal the fascinating story of the city and its surrounding area. For an insight into Elche’s ancient past, visit the Archaeological and History Museum of Elche (MAHE). One of its highlights is the famous Lady of Elche, although the original sculpture is kept at the National Archaeological Museum in Madrid; the museum displays a replica and explains the importance of the remarkable Iberian discovery. Allow time to wander through the Municipal Park, a peaceful green space close to the old town, before stopping for lunch at one of the city’s restaurants. Look out for local specialities featuring dates and rice.

Securing the Coast: The Local Metalworkers Keeping Spain’s Expat Havens Safe

Living on the Costa Blanca is all about enjoying the sun, the laid-back Mediterranean lifestyle, and a welcoming community. But whether you live here full-time or use your villa as a holiday getaway, property security is always at the back of your mind. When you leave your home for a long period of time or even just for a weekend trip, you want to know it is completely secure. These days people aren't just looking for basic locks; they want custom made automated driveway gates, stylish glass partitions, and heavy-duty security grills. This is where Metal Man Jake comes in – locally fabricating all types of metal work including security grills, gates, handrails, stainless steel and glass work. Instead of buying cheap, mass-produced items that rust quickly in the salty coastal air, most homeowners prefer dealing with local experts who know the climate and use materials that actually last – all of which you will get from Metal Man Jake who comes highly recommended for both quality of the work and attention to detail. At the end of the day, big corporate stores cannot compete with a local professional who cares about keeping the community safe. You can contact Jake on 658 087 987 or email him at metalmanjake123@aol.com to arrange a free no obligation quotation, and can view examples of work completed on the Facebook page Metal Man Jake.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Age Concern Costa Blanca Sur exists to provide services and support to people over 50 in our local community. After more than 25 years serving the elderly residents of the Southern Costa Blanca, Age Concern regrets to announce that as from the 2nd November we will not be opening our Day Centre on Mondays although it will remain operative Tuesday to Friday each week as normal. The sole reason for this is the lack of volunteers. We hope that this will only be for a short period until we can recruit more volunteers to help us. Our Day Centre is the core of our operation providing a place for our beneficiaries who may not be able to get out to meet other people and have a chat and a drink. It is a vital resource to combat loneliness and provide social interaction. In addition to the Day Centre we provide many other services including: · Loan of Mobility/Care Aids · Assisting in obtaining Personal Alarms (through an external company) · Keep in touch scheme – where a volunteer will ring each morning to check the welfare of a beneficiary. · Befriending service – help with shopping etc · Spanish Lessons – for Friends of Age Concern · Lending Library – Every Tuesday 10.30am to 12.30pm. · Bereavement Group – Meets Tuesdays from 2pm to 4pm We are therefore looking for new volunteers so that we can open once again for 5 days a week as normal. If you feel you can give a morning a week (it doesn’t have to be a Monday) then please call us on (+34) 966 786 887 or email us on costablanca@ageconcern.org.es.

ADAPT Theatre Group present Aladdin

As regular readers will know, the ADAPT Theatre Group, based in San Pedro del Pinatar, put on an annual pantomime which has a unique component, we perform in both English and Spanish. The reason for this isn’t to show off our language skills, but to invite our Spanish neighbours to experience something that is peculiarly British and also to raise money for local charities. The result is a hilarious mixture of cultures and humour which appeals to both Spanish and English-speaking audience members. We have been performing our pantomimes for 15 years and have now become a very well-known and appreciated part of the local cultural scene as well as attracting audiences from all over the Mar Menor and Costa Blanca areas. This year we are delighted to have added to our team three new actors, all with considerable stage experience, including Jolanda who has worked in professional musical and film roles for many years, and a number of talented backstage supporters as well. After many years working in the more intimate surroundings of the Casa de Cultura, this year will be the second time we have had the privilege of preforming in the town’s new Geli Albaladejo theatre and this experience has without a doubt brought our work up to a higher level without losing that sense of fun and spontaneity we have always enjoyed. As one of our aims is integration into the local community, we work closely with a local primary school who provide us with our children’s dance group while we offer them the chance to practice their English and we also donate materials annually to the school. Our main charity is currently AFEMAR, a local association working with people who have mental health problems throughout the Mar Menor area. This year’s pantomime, Aladdin, will be performed at the Geli Albaladejo Theatre, San Pedro del Pinatar on Friday 27th November at 7pm and Saturday 28th November at 12 noon and 7pm. Tickets can be obtained online at bit.ly/Aladdin2026 and are also available at the following outlets: Papelería Librería ARCO, Avda Dr. Artero Guirao, 63, San Pedro del Pinatar. EXPLORING THE LOCAL WINE SCENE Jumilla is a name many wine lovers will recognise, but not everyone realises just how close this fascinating wine region is to the Costa Blanca.

Just a short journey inland from Alicante lies a landscape of mountains, valleys, olive groves and vineyards. Jumilla is the largest of Murcia’s three Denominaciones de Origen (DOs), alongside Bullas and Yecla. Its wines have gained international recognition, particularly those made from Monastrell, the region’s principal red grape. Interestingly, Jumilla is one of only three Spanish wine denominations that cross regional boundaries, the others being Rioja and Cava. Although the town of Jumilla is in Murcia, the wine region extends into neighbouring Castilla-La Mancha, covering six municipalities in the province of Albacete. Two wineries I’ve visited are excellent examples of what this region has to offer. Casa Castillo, situated beneath the Sierra del Molar near Jumilla, is one of the region’s most respected producers. The estate has been in the same family since 1941, although it was in the early 1990s that they began producing wine under their own name. Today, José María Vicente and his family continue that work. Wines such as Las Gravas and Pie Franco have helped demonstrate just what Monastrell is capable of producing. Having visited Casa Castillo, what stays with me is the quality of the wines and the impressive setting in which they’re made. Further north, near Fuente-Álamo in Albacete, is Bodega Cerrón. Run by three siblings from the fourth generation of a winegrowing family, the winery places great importance on preserving old vineyards and working organically, with

biodynamic practices in some parcels. I visited Cerrón with a group a couple of years ago and was particularly impressed by the wines. Since then, I’ve noticed something interesting. Wherever I travel in Spain, I seem to come across Cerrón on restaurant and wine-bar lists. Even in Rioja! These are two different family wineries, both producing wines that deserve attention. They’re also a reminder that Jumilla has much more to offer than the powerful, inexpensive reds with which it was once associated. For those of you living on the Costa Blanca, there’s a great deal worth discovering surprisingly close to home. If you have any wine-related questions or would like to get in touch, you can email me at tony.senseexperiences@yahoo.com. Until next month, cheers, Tony Higgins.

Steve and Jill’s Camino de Santiago Pilgrimage Raises €1000 for Local Charity “Movers and Shakers”

“Walking a hundred kilometres over eight to ten days doesn’t sound unreasonable, does it?” That was the question we asked ourselves when planning to walk the Camino de Santiago de Compostela in North Western Spain this Summer. On paper it’s not a lot, but we’re retirees (71 & 65), somewhat overweight, not very fit, and one of us has arthritic knees. The challenges ahead of us were definitely going to be walking 10km a day, every day. What was the terrain going to be like? How wet would it be? What about blisters? Etc etc. But we committed hearts and minds, and promised our favourite local Charity - Association of Movers and Shakers - that we would use the opportunity to try and raise some money for them. This could be our way of thanking them for the personal support they have provided, at a time when it was most needed. We needn’t have worried about any of those things .. it turned out to be the most wonderful experience of our lives! With the help of Google, a hotel booking website and a Camino Pilgrim mobile app, we planned our route and accommodation. Taking us from O Porriño, just above the Portuguese border into Galicia, up to Santiago. Each day we started with a coffee and a ‘stamp’ on our Camino Passport to account for our distance on the trail, and headed off with excitement at what the day would bring. We took our time as we walked through the most beautiful countryside, taking in the little villages along winding country lanes and breathed in the scent of pine, eucalyptus and wild mint on the woodland trails. While others rushed past us - focusing only on getting in the kilometres and reaching their destination - for us the pleasure was the journey. Along the way, and in restaurants over lovely food and wine, we met other pilgrims from all over the world - all eager to talk about their journeys, their reasons and their experiences. Some became ‘Camino Family’, as we met up again over the course of the pilgrimage - often just by chance - have become firm friends. We can’t deny there was some challenging terrain and some long, steep sections but they paled into insignificance when we turned a corner and were greeted by some breathtaking view or just a field of donkeys, or some traditional musicians and dancers hoping to earn a few euros for our entertainment. But the most amazing sight, was turning the corner in Santiago after a long climb to the top of the City and taking our first glimpse of the Cathedral and Square. Magnificent in size and architecture and alive with elated and emotional pilgrims - most of whom had walked many hundreds of kilometres further than we had. We shared their emotions as we stood and drank in the moment. It was perfect. A real achievement for us and an adventure that will live on in our hearts and memories forever. And the most rewarding part was the support we received from family, friends and the lovely people at the Movers and Shakers charity. So we are proud and delighted to have managed to raise €1,000 for their wonderful work. Steve Douglas & Jill Peard. The Association of Movers and Shakers are always looking for volunteers to join their small team and are keen to recruit a new Secretary to the Organisation to take minutes at Committee Meetings. A lot of English sayings cannot be literally translated into Spanish each month we will give you a saying to help you sound like a local. In English we would say: “birds of a feather, flock together", meaning people who have similar interests, backgrounds, values etc stick together. The Spanish way of saying this is: “Dime con quién andas y te diré quién eres” Literally this means ‘Tell me who you hang out with and I’ll tell you who you are’.

Help Make Christmas Special for Children at San José Obrero Orphanage

Lyn Adams, a legally registered fundraiser for San José Obrero Orphanage, is appealing to the local community to support this year’s Christmas Shoebox Appeal. Each year, Lyn receives a confidential list of children who are unable to spend Christmas away from the orphanage. With many facing a long festive period without family, the appeal aims to bring a little happiness through a small, personal gift. Members of the public can choose a child from the list and prepare a shoebox or small present containing suitable gifts. Items should be wrapped and labelled with the chosen child’s name, ensuring each gift reaches its intended recipient in time for Christmas. This year, almost 100 presents are needed, so every contribution, however small, will be greatly appreciated. If you would like to take part and help make Christmas brighter for a child, please contact Lyn Adams on 676 650 210 for further information. Every gift makes a difference!
