It has been a busy few weeks on the work front with deadlines and distributions not only for QFocus but also the production of the new edition of Focus on Professional Services.
I have gone from having very few plans this year to suddenly having something arranged almost every month. Although there is nothing planned for June as yet, I am intending to use the time to recharge my batteries in advance, as July is set to be a very busy one. However things never seem to go according to plan but I'll just have to go with the flow.
My son and his wife are currently on their long awaited honeymoon in the USA and I am looking forward to their return to hear all about their adventures. I'm sure they are having a lovely time on this trip of a lifetime.
Torrevieja and its surrounding towns come alive in June with vibrant cultural festivals, food events and beach parties to name a few.
From 5 to 26 June, the Gastronomic Days will be held in Torrevieja. This is an annual event that highlights the gastronomic richness of our sea and our roots where 4 select restaurants in the city will offer exclusive menus.
The Hogueras de San Juan (Bonfires) take place from 20 - 24 June with the main beach night on 23 June. This is the ultimate summer solstice beach party where thousands gather on the sand for massive bonfires, music, fireworks, and the tradition of wading into the sea at midnight for good luck.
Moving into the end of June and beginning of July is the start of the Moors and Christian fiestas in Rojales.
So there's plenty going on in our lovely corner of Spain... I can already see my calm June changing into an active one!!!

SUDOKU International Kite Festival
The kite festival taking place on 6 and 7 June in Castelló de la Plana, just north of Valencia, promises to be one of the most colourful family events of the summer. The festival is held at the beaches of El Gurugú and El Pinar in the Grau de Castelló, along the Mediterranean coast. Known for giant inflatable kites, acrobatic displays and seaside entertainment, the event attracts visitors from across Spain and abroad. Hundreds of kites in different shapes and sizes fill the sky, creating a spectacular scene above the beach. Professional kite flyers perform synchronised routines, while children and families can join workshops to design and fly their own kites. The event combines art, sport and local culture in a relaxed coastal atmosphere. Food trucks, music, beach games and evening activities make the festival enjoyable throughout the day. There will also be illuminated night kites and hot-air balloon exhibitions, adding even more excitement. Visitors can stroll along the promenade, enjoy traditional Valencian food and watch the sky transform into a moving display of colour and creativity. With free entry and activities for all ages, the festival has become an important early-summer celebration on the Valencian coast.

DAY TRIPS
Need a quick escape from the daily grind? A day trip to Alicante might just be the answer.
Begin your visit at Santa Bárbara Castle, one of Spain’s largest medieval fortresses. Set high above the city, it offers spectacular views over the harbour, beaches, and surrounding mountains. After exploring the castle walls and towers, head down into the old town streets filled with cafés and colourful buildings.
Continue to the lively Explanada de España, the city’s famous palm-lined promenade with its distinctive mosaic wave pattern. Nearby is the fun and family-friendly Calle de las Setas, often called Mushroom Street, decorated with giant colourful mushrooms and whimsical sculptures. Perfect photo opportunities all the way.
History lovers should visit Basilica of Santa Maria, the city’s oldest church, known for its Gothic architecture and ornate interior. Alicante also has several interesting museums, including Archaeological Museum of Alicante and the contemporary art museum MACA. With tapas bars and restaurants galore you will be spoilt for choice when finding somewhere to eat.

Crescendo International Choir June Concerts
Crescendo International Choir is planning three concerts in June, featuring a variety of popular melodies.
The first will be a unique event where the choir will be performing as part of an original Spanish play called El hombre del banco (The man on the bench). This is a reprise of an event first held April 25th before a packed auditorium at Los Montesinos School of Music and Culture. At that first-of-its-kind event for Crescendo, the choir performed “Humming Chorus” from Madame Butterfly as well as “Deep Peace,” by Canadian composer and musician Bill Douglas. The choir also performed a song combining “I Believe” by Elvis Presley, sung by the male singers, with the Latin hymn “Ave Maria Gratia Plena,” sung by the ladies. So if you missed this special event, you have another chance to see it in Benijófar at the Casa de Cultura on Saturday June 6. This event costs only five euros to attend and begins at 8 pm.
The following Saturday night, June 13, the choir will be performing a variety of popular music at Salt Church in Los Montesinos. The church is located at Calle Daya Nueva, 12, and the event will start 8 pm. This event also costs five euros to attend. Finally, to round out its 2026 spring season, there will be a concert at La Siesta Evangelical Church on Monday, June 15. This 6 pm concert will be free, with a retiring bucket at the event of the service to benefit La Siesta church’s charities.
Crescendo Choir sings a wide variety of musical selections. If you are interested in singing with Crescendo, you are invited to come to one of their rehearsals. PERFECT PATIOS
Creating a beautiful apartment patio garden in Spain is all about choosing plants that thrive in sun, heat, and occasional dry conditions, while also adding colour, texture, and fragrance. Mediterranean climates are perfect for a mix of hardy, lowmaintenance plants and vibrant seasonal blooms.
Lavender is a must-have in Spain. Not only is it droughttolerant, but it also fills the air with a calming scent and attracts pollinators. Alongside it, rosemary and thyme offer both greenery and practical use in the kitchen, making your garden both beautiful and functional.
For a splash of colour, geraniums are ideal. They flourish in Spanish sunlight and come in bright reds, pinks, and whites that instantly lift the space.
To add height and structure, small olive trees or dwarf citrus trees (like lemon or orange) work wonderfully in containers. They bring a touch of the Spanish countryside to your patio and can even produce fruit with proper care. For a softer, trailing effect, include plants like ivy or petunias in hanging baskets or railing planters.
Place taller plants at the back, medium-sized pots in the middle, and trailing plants near the edges. Mixing pot sizes and textures - ceramic, clay, and woven baskets - adds visual interest. A bistro table, and warm lighting such as string lights or lanterns can transform the space into a cozy retreat. Finally, don’t forget shade. If your patio gets intense afternoon sun, a simple umbrella or bamboo screen can protect more delicate plants and make the space more comfortable.

Mediterranean Chickpea Salad
This protein-packed salad is refreshing and filling.
Ingredients:
1 can chickpeas, drained
1 cucumber, diced
1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
¼ red onion, sliced
½ cup feta cheese
Handful of parsley
Lemon-Olive Oil Dressing:
Whisk together 3 tablespoons olive oil, juice of 1 lemon, 1 teaspoon honey, salt, pepper, and a pinch of oregano. Combine all ingredients in a bowl and toss with the dressing. Chill before serving for the best flavour.
Mango Avocado Spinach Salad
This sweet and creamy salad is perfect for hot afternoons.
Ingredients:
3 cups fresh spinach
1 ripe mango, sliced
1 avocado, diced
¼ cup red bell pepper strips
2 tablespoons sunflower seeds
Honey-Lime Dressing:
Mix 2 tablespoons lime juice, 1 tablespoon honey, 2 teaspoons olive oil, and a small pinch of chili flakes.
Drizzle the dressing over the salad just before serving. The mango and avocado create a smooth texture while the lime adds brightness.
Watermelon, Cucumber & Mint Salad

The Stagestruck Players are a Murder Mystery Group who perform original, comedy scripts in local bars to raise money for their chosen charity, the Torrevieja Alzheimer’s Association. The group meet weekly to rehearse and the scripts are changed regularly. Some scripts require fancy dress and a recent event most of the audience embraced the theme and dressed to impress. The evening was a lot of fun and €339 was raised for the charity. Spain is one of the most exciting wineproducing countries in the world right now, yet many of its most interesting stories remain surprisingly close to home.
With this new wine column, we want to take readers beyond the supermarket shelves and familiar labels to explore the wines, people and places shaping modern Spanish wine culture, beginning here in Alicante and Murcia before gradually travelling further across Spain.
Through wine, we will also discover the landscapes, gastronomy, traditions and local characters that give each region its identity, because wine is never just about what is in the glass. It is also about history, climate, family, village life and the culture that surrounds it.
Based in the north west of the Region of Murcia, we, Tony and Teresa, run Sense Experiences and spend much of our time visiting wineries, vineyards, restaurants and food producers across Spain. Over the years we have seen local wines from areas such as Alicante, Bullas and Jumilla gain increasing recognition both nationally and internationally, often while remaining overlooked in their own backyard.
In the months ahead we will meet winemakers, visit vineyards, explore local grape varieties such as Monastrell, and uncover some of the stories helping to shape the modern Mediterranean wine scene. Some columns may take us to bustling coastal cities, others to quiet rural villages where traditions still survive much as they always have.
Above all, we hope this column encourages readers to look at the wines and gastronomy of Spain, especially those found here in the south east, with fresh eyes and a deeper sense of connection to the places they come from.

THE STAR CASTOR
Maybe that name rings a bell at the back of your head, it is one of a pair and its brother is called Pollux. That’s right, it’s one of the two main stars in the constellation Gemini, the heavenly twins and birth sign for yours truly in June. It’s also a very interesting star, or as I should say stars. A binary star is not a rare thing in the heavens, it is a star that appears to the naked eye as one, but is actually a pair of stars in close orbit around each other.
A long time ago in 1718 it was discovered that Castor wasn’t just one star but appeared to be two. This is all very interesting but a long way from special, what makes this system special is that what you thought was one star is actually a sextuple system, it’s made up of six stars consisting of three binary doubles. These are designated as Castor A, Castor B and Castor C. We call A and B spectroscopic binaries and C as eclipsing red dwarf stars, quite cool and small for stars.
The arrangement of all these stars has fascinated astronomers for centuries and given mankind a sort of natural laboratory to study Newton’s first laws of motion in action. Another interesting thing is the orbital periods of all these stars. Castor A and B orbit each other every 467 years whereas Castor C orbits the systems centre of mass every 14,000 years. Castor is only 50 ish light years away, practically on our doorstep in our huge universe, imagine the view from one of the planets in the system, wow, what a view.

I received an odd question the other day, someone had stumbled on the story of Betelgeuse going supernova, it was a sensationalist story that gave the impression that it was imminent and that the radiation will cook us all in our beds.
Total claptrap, Betelgeuse will pop sometime in the next 10,000 years, not all that soon, and the radiation will have mostly dispersed by the time it gets here. You’d get more radiation from walking on Dartmoor.
I find this kind of scaremongering nonsense quite depressing as it preys on people’s fears and gets repeated as fact. No one should do it.

PLANNING AHEAD FOR THE BEST PLACE TO VIEW THE SOLAR ECLIPSE
On August 12, 2026, a spectacular total solar eclipse will cross parts of Europe, and Spain will be one of the best countries in the world to observe it from.
A solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes directly between the Earth and the Sun, temporarily blocking sunlight. During totality, the sky becomes dark, temperatures drop slightly, and the Sun’s outer atmosphere, called the corona, becomes visible.
In Spain, the eclipse will be especially impressive in northern and eastern regions. Some of the best places to watch it include parts of Valencia, Zaragoza, Bilbao, and Palma de Mallorca. Coastal areas may offer beautiful views, but clear skies are essential, so checking the weather forecast is important.
To watch the eclipse safely, never look directly at the Sun without certified eclipse glasses. Ordinary sunglasses are not safe enough. Viewers can also use pinhole projectors or special solar telescopes.
The best experience will be from open spaces with little light pollution and a clear view of the horizon.
Many cities in Spain are already preparing public events and observation activities for this rare astronomical event. Plan ahead though as many are already getting booked up.
