Here are three recipes using plums and or melon, which are at their best at the moment
Plum and Almond Crumble Serves: 6
Ingredients
6 ripe plums, sliced
2 tbsp sugar
1 tsp lemon juice
1 cup rolled oats
½ cup flour
1 cup brown sugar
½ cup chopped almonds
6 tbsp cold butter, cubed
Instructions
Heat oven to 180°C.
Toss plums with sugar and lemon juice in a baking dish.
Combine oats, flour, brown sugar, and almonds. Rub in the butter until crumbly.
Sprinkle topping over the plums.
Bake for 35–40 minutes until golden and bubbling.
Serve warm or cold with yogurt, cream, or ice cream.
I leave out the sugar and use low fat spread as a healthier option.
Chilled Melon, Cucumber & Mint Salad Serves: 4
Ingredients
½ melon (cantaloupe or honeydew), cubed
1 cucumber, sliced
Handful fresh mint leaves
Juice of 1 lime
1 tbsp olive oil
Pinch of salt
Optional: crumbled feta cheese
Instructions
Combine melon, cucumber, and mint in a bowl.
Whisk together lime juice, olive oil, and salt.
Toss with the salad.
Add feta if using.
Chill for 15–20 minutes before serving. This works well as a light lunch or side dish on a hot day.
Plum Yogurt Parfaits Serves: 4
Ingredients
4 ripe plums, diced
2 cups Greek yogurt
2 tbsp honey or maple syrup
½ tsp vanilla extract
½ cup granola
2 tbsp chopped pistachios
Instructions
Mix the yogurt with honey and vanilla. In serving glasses, layer yogurt, diced plums, and granola. Repeat the layers until the glasses are filled.
Top with pistachios and refrigerate for at least 15 minutes before serving.
Tip: For extra flavour, sprinkle a little cinnamon over the plums.

The world cup fever is now in full flow and although the times are not the best for supporters to watch the games, it is still getting a lot of interest and it is great to see some of the underdogs doing well and getting recognition for their efforts.
The start to our summer activities are about to begin with a trip to Madrid for a few days to the MadCool festival. I went to this event a few years ago and it was fantastic however my other half is braving the experience with me this year – this will be interesting (and maybe amusing) to see how he copes with the hustle and bustle of it all and whether it gives him the bug for more?
Towards the end of the month we are making a short trip back to the UK to attend my nieces wedding in the north east. It will be lovely to see all the family and have a catch up with friends, who unfortunately we don't get to see as often as we would like. I'm also looking forward to having a little respite from the intense heat in our part of the world.

Visiting the Algar Waterfalls
Nestled in the picturesque countryside inland from Benidorm, the Algar Waterfalls (Les Fonts de l'Algar) at Callosa d'en Sarrià are one of the most beautiful natural attractions.
The crystal-clear waters cascade through a series of rocky pools, creating a stunning landscape that attracts nature lovers, hikers, and families alike. Well-maintained pathways allow visitors to explore the area safely while enjoying spectacular views of the waterfalls and surrounding vegetation. One of the main attractions is the opportunity to swim in the natural pools. Picnic areas and nearby restaurants make it easy to spend an entire day enjoying the site. There are free and paid for parking areas and a small entrance fee to the waterfalls is charged.
From July 1 to August 31, visits are divided into 3 sessions: 9am to 1pm, 1pm to 4pm and 4pm to 8pm. If you arrive at the beginning of the chosen time slot, you will have more time to enjoy the visit. You must exit by the end of the selected session.
Tickets can be purchased at the ticket office on the same day until full capacity is reached. Online purchases can be made at least 24 hours before the day of the visit on the website: www.lasfuentesdelalgar.com. The online system does not allow same-day purchases. It is recommended purchasing tickets in advance to secure your entry.

La Nucía goes back to the Middle Ages
On 10, 11, and 12 July, the old town of La Nucía transforms into a medieval world to commemorate the signing of the town's charter on the 9th of July 1705. This market, held annually since 2005, has earned a strong reputation among locals and tourists as an unmissable event. And that's no surprise: its medieval encampment, complete with archery and fencing workshops, the knightly combats, belly dancing, a charlatan, troubadours, nobles and beggars, craft demonstrations, medieval taverns, and over forty stalls selling authentic handicrafts, guarantees that both young and old will have a very enjoyable time.
The Town Hall square and surrounding streets will be filled with stalls offering a wide variety of authentic handicrafts: ceramics and pottery, glass, designer jewellery and costume jewellery, carved wood and marquetry, handmade soaps and perfumes, wooden toys, patchwork, and much more. And all with the guarantee that it is handmade by the artisans themselves. At certain times, you can even watch them creating their pieces; the blacksmith will be working at his forge, and a potter will be inviting the public to try making their own bowl on his wheel.
In the gastronomic corner you will find food stalls: cheeses and sausages, nuts, jams and sweets, as well as a medieval tavern, a pulpería serving plates of octopus, and a jaima with Arab food. And while parents recover their strength there, children can play board games or have a ride on the mythological merry-go-round.
An encampment is set up again in the Plaza de San José that offers ample space for demonstrations of medieval combat, archery and fencing workshops. To complete the medieval atmosphere, troubadours, knights, a belly dancer, a charlatan, beggars and other medieval characters will tour the streets and corners of the market and close the market every night with a great fire show.
The market is set up in the oldest part of the village, around the Town Hall, and opens to the public on Friday 10, Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 of July from 6pm to midnight (or later...). There is ample parking (free) in the Auditorio de les Nits car park, 100 metres from the market and in a large openair car park, just behind the old town. Before Calling a Builder, Call the “House Doctor” Part 1
When a crack appears on a wall, damp patches start showing up, a floor begins to sink slightly, a door suddenly stops closing properly, or a fissure seems to grow over time, most homeowners react in the same way: they call a builder.
It feels like the obvious decision. There is a construction problem, so we look for someone to fix it. But there is one important question very few people ask before taking action:
Do we actually know what is causing the problem?
Because repairing something without diagnosing it properly is like taking medication without knowing what illness you have. Nobody would go straight into surgery without first seeing a doctor to understand what is happening. Yet with homes, people do it all the time. A crack gets filled without understanding why it appeared. Damp is painted over without finding the source. Flooring is replaced without checking whether movement in the structure is causing the issue.
Months later, the problem returns.
That is why there is growing value in an independent technical specialist - someone who acts as a genuine “house doctor”.
Our role is to investigate building defects, identify the real cause of the problem, and provide homeowners with the best possible solution from an independent and professional point of view. We do not sell building work.
We do not earn more money if the repair becomes larger. We have no interest in making a problem appear worse than it really is.

EXPLORING THE LOCAL WINE SCENE
If you enjoy red wine in this part of Spain, there is a good chance you have already come across Monastrell, even if the name itself is not yet familiar.
This dark-skinned grape variety has become one of the defining wines of Alicante and Murcia, thriving in the hot, dry conditions of the Mediterranean south east where many other grapes would struggle. In places such as Jumilla, Bullas and Alicante, old bush vines, some of them decades old, dig deep into poor, rocky soils to survive long summers with very little rainfall, producing wines with richness, character and a real sense of place.
For many years Monastrell was often overlooked internationally, but that has started to change. Increasingly, wine professionals, sommeliers and wine lovers in cities such as London and New York are beginning to take notice of the quality and individuality coming from this part of Spain. Today a new generation of winemakers is helping people rediscover what this grape can do, producing wines that range from powerful and full-bodied reds to fresher, more elegant styles that work beautifully with Mediterranean gastronomy.
One of the pleasures of exploring wine in this region is discovering how closely it connects to everyday life. A glass of Monastrell alongside grilled lamb, local cheeses or a rice dish tells you something about the climate, landscape and traditions of the area in a way few guidebooks ever could.

THE SUMMER SOLSTICE
There’s a lot of fuss made about the summer solstice, but most people have no real idea about what it actually is. They might know that it is the longest day, and that people congregate around stone circles, but ask many people about why it’s the longest day and you’ll just get a strange look.
The answer is remarkably simple, as most people know, the Earth is tilted on its axis, i.e. a line through the Earth between the north and south poles isn’t perpendicular to the line around the Sun that the Earth follows through the year. This tilt means that in mid summer more of the northern hemisphere is facing the Sun than at other times of the year. Where on the Earth is the Sun directly overhead at midday on June 21st, On the tropic of cancer, that’s what the tropics are, lines on maps that mark this extreme. Why do so many people make a fuss about the solstice, and the two equinoxes as well. To be honest there’s no good reason to make a fuss, some like to remember the ancient religions with made up ceremonies but there no real grounds to do so, most ancient religions left no written records and there practices were made to sound abhorrent by the winners of the battles, especially by the Romans.
We live in a world that can’t even get the birth of Jesus at the correct time of year, so why make a fuss about the longest day? The reason is of course cultural, we’re human beings and any excuse for a good party is an excellent idea, but there are no astronomical reasons that make the solstice special. All my remarks apply to the northern hemisphere, in the south everything is 6 months different, our summer solstice is their winter solstice and vice versa, though there’s probably a lot less druids in Australia.
I’ll finish with a few words about astronomy, the mid summer is an awful time for observing, the skies don’t get truly dark until very late and not long after this the skies are starting to lighten from the early dawn. The most interesting thing recently was that Jupiter and Venus appeared to be near each other in the sky. Naturally this is just a line of sight effect Jupiter is one of the outer planets and never really gets close to Venus.

Saturday 23rd May 2026 marked a truly special milestone as the Prostate Cancer Golf Sponsorship Day returned to Vistabella Golf Club, Costa Blanca, for its third consecutive year. This event has now grown into a deeply valued and highly anticipated event and this year, it reached a remarkable new height, raising an incredible 15,500€ in a single day for prostate cancer awareness and research.
This wonderful achievement is, at its core, a story of people coming together with generosity, kindness, and a shared sense of purpose. Richard Morgan of No Grow Grass would like to extend his heartfelt thanks to everyone who played a part in making the day such a memorable success.
