Approximately 10% of the Spanish population have hearing loss, which equates to about 4,7 million people. The most common cause of hearing loss is age and exposure to noise; however other factors such as infection, genetics, trauma, wax and disease also contribute to hearing difficulties. Here at InterVision Expert Audiologia our resident Audiologist will not only check your hearing but will also check the health of your ears. By using the most up to date technology they will look for any external or internal causes for the hearing problem, such as a blocked ear canal with a plaque of wax, or any inflammation caused by infection or irritation. A referral to the medical centre is then recommended, and a further hearing test once earwax is removed or infection/ inflammation is resolved. With tympanometry, they will check the eardrum function, i.e. an acoustic measurement of the eardrum and conduction bones, to distinguish whether sensory or transmission hearing loss is in the inner or middle ear. Following these checks, the Audiologists will perform an audiometry test and logoaudiometry which makes an analysis of the levels of hearing ability and measures the level of understanding. By introducing different frequencies and intensities they can create a graph. From this graph, they can determine if there is any hearing loss, and which frequency it is. After all the information is collected, the Audiologist will discuss whether hearing aids can help, and which type is most suitable for where the hearing loss is occurring. Once hearing aids are purchased, there will be FREE follow-up appointments to make any further adjustments, and an annual routine hearing check. I am writing this just before Christmas and really starting to look forward to the festivities. Although I'm not quite prepared (nothing unusual for me) I don't have quite as much to organise this year as we are invited to our sons for Christmas dinner so the food shopping won't be as much as previous years. It will be nice to have everything cooked for us instead of all the prepping of the vegetables on Christmas morning. I'm sure we will all have a great day. We haven't got any plans for New Year's Eve so will probably just go with the flow. Sometimes they turn out the best evenings. As far as new year resolutions are concerned, I haven't given it much thought as yet but maybe top of the list is to be better organised and not leave things until the last minute. This would probably ease my stress levels when events are approaching… I might even consider starting my Christmas 2026 shopping in the January sales, although I will probably put any purchases away and forget what I've bought!! I wish you all a very healthy, wealthy and happy New Year, let's hope it's a good one for everyone. Until next time ….

Car breakdown signalling, and e-scooter rule changes From January 1, 2026, Spain’s traffic authority - the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) - is introducing a major change in how motorists must signal a breakdown or accident on the road. The traditional reflective warning triangles will no longer be accepted as the legal way to warn other drivers. Instead, all vehicles must carry and use a DGT-approved V-16 emergency beacon with built-in geolocation technology. The V-16 beacon is a small amber flashing light that can be activated without leaving the vehicle and placed on the roof to signal that your car is immobilised. Its 360° light improves visibility, and the geolocation function automatically sends your exact position to the DGT’s traffic management system (DGT 3.0), helping alert other drivers and emergency services in real time. Only certified, connected V-16 devices are legal after the deadline - old models or non-connected lights will not comply and could lead to fines. The aim of the new rule is to improve roadside safety, especially on high-speed roads, by reducing the need for drivers to exit their vehicles to place warning devices. There has been opposition to replacing triangles entirely with the V16, with the argument that the beacon alone isn’t always visible enough - especially on curves, in bright daylight, or in certain road conditions - and some say it is better to use both (where safe for the driver) for real safety. Remember - always keep your reflective vests and V-16 beacon in a place you can reach them without having to exit the vehicle before using them.
From January 2, e-scooters in Spain will be treated much more like registered vehicles, not casual personal devices. If your scooter cannot be certified or insured, it may no longer be legal to use on public roads. Mandatory Scooter Requirements: Registration & Visible ID All e-scooters must be registered with the DGT and a unique identification sticker/plate must be visibly displayed. Compulsory Insurance: Civil liability (third-party) insurance is mandatory. Certificate of Circulation: Scooters must have a Certificate of Conformity proving compliance with Spanish technical standards. Lights & Reflectors: Front/rear lights and reflectors required. Full compliance deadline for older scooters: 2027. Speed Limit: Maximum 25 km/h, any modification to increase speed is illegal. Passengers: One rider only per scooter. Rider Obligations: Helmet Mandatory nationwide. No Phones or Headphones. Using mobile phones or headphones/earbuds while riding is prohibited. Reflective Gear - High-visibility vests mandatory for delivery riders and strongly recommended for all users, especially at night. Where You Can (and Can’t) Ride: Bike Lanes First - Use cycle lanes where available. Ride on regular roads if no bike lane exists. Pavements are Strictly prohibited.

BEGINNING IN ASTRONOMY - The third bit

In the first two parts of this little series I’ve talked about starting observing with binoculars, something I consider a near essential part of learning the night sky. In the second part I mentioned the danger of wasting money on poor cheap telescopes. In this part I’ll go up-market a bit and talk about some of the newest self guiding astronomy camera telescopes. So, what is one of those? What I’m talking about is not a telescope you look through, it’s a computerised instrument that once you’ve learnt to use it properly gives rather good images, photos if you want to call them that, of things in the night sky. A decent one can just be put down and connected up, it will know where it is, and point precisely at whatever target you choose, they’re also incredibly compact. They work best on deep sky objects such as nebulas and galaxies, and less well on planets although even when pointed at Mars, you’ll see more with one of these than you could ever see with your eye through a small home telescope. How do they work? I’m not going to get too technical about this, suffice to say that a truly dark sky is vital and when connected via an appropriate app on your phone, they know exactly where they are and where they are pointing. This allows them to rotate slowly to counteract the rotation of the Earth and stay locked on to whatever target you have chosen. They then will take a long series of pictures and automaticity stack them together, resulting in a high resolution image. Not long ago all this was either impossible or would have needed a stack of technology costing a fortune and needing a lot of skill and knowledge to use, now most of us can spend a few hundred Euros and get excellent results. How good are the results? surprisingly good actually, certainly good enough for most people. They are not as good as a dedicated proper telescope and astro camera set up, but something like that needs a lot of money and a huge amount of skill to use properly, for an occasional user or someone who wants an easier introduction these devices are excellent. Lastly, which one and how much to spend. This is the hardest part, the problem with technology is that a great model today is out of date in a few months. You could keep putting off spending your money and never actually get anything. Look at models from Zwo like the Seestar s30 and s50, and models from Dwarflabs and Vaona. Prices begin a little over 500€. This month I’ve tried to give the impression that these instruments are relatively simple to use, which is true, but you will still have a learning curve and if you aren’t reasonably proficient in astronomy and computer and phone use it will much harder. Crescendo International Choir performed two Christmas concerts in December, singing popular songs in English and Spanish. The first concert was held in Benijofar and the second in Torrevieja. At the second concert, a Scottish bagpipe player named Donnie MacDiarmid also performed. Funds raised at the Benijofar event went to support the Benijofar social services food bank while funds raised at the La Siesta event went to support church causes, including financial support for a girls orphanage in Mozambique. Also in December, the Choir was featured on a local television program, highlighting that singers come from so many different countries in the choir. A portion of an internationally - themed concert given by the choir in November at Salt Church was shown on the Valencian TV channel A Punt. They were interested in this intercultural concert, which included the performance of two traditional Valencian songs. If you are interested in getting involved in singing in Crescendo Choir, you are invited to come to one of their rehearsals at Rincon de Miguel restaurant in Los Montesinos every Monday from January 12, from 17:30 to 19:50 until further notice. ADAPT PANTO SUCCESS
The end of November was the start of the Christmas season for San Pedro residents with the sensational production of “Jack and the Beanstalk” at the new Geli Albaladejo theatre. All anxiety about adapting to a large new venue were allayed as actors and stage crew alike gave it their all and delighted three packed out audiences for two evening and one matinee show. Everyone had a great time, including both Spanish and English speaking audience members, adults and children. As one Spanish audience member, Juanjo, told us: “The production, the stage design and the integration with the video elements were sensational - fresh and fun.” He went on to say: “The production showed exquisite care in making sure that the play could be understood in both languages (English and Spanish), a goal that was fully and brilliantly achieved - without making it slow or repetitive, and, from the perspective of a Spaniard, with the added charm of a strong English accent in the Spanish lines.” With the increased audience size we have been able to make two charitable donations, namely 3,000€ to AFEMAR, a local charity which works in the area of mental health and 500€ to HSC an association which supports families coping with a rare congenital disease. Our thanks also go to all those groups and individuals who worked with us to make this year’s panto such a success. The Rojales Pantomime Group finished panto season 2025 with a bang! Three performances absolutely chock full of lovely people who had a fantastic time laughing, singing, booing and cheering their way through the story. This was a record achievement for the group as the best Pantomime in our history. Enthusiasm is so high, we are already in the throes of planning Panto 2026, so watch this space. The Stagestruck Players are a small Amateur Dramatic group who are known for performing comedy Murder Mysteries in local bars. All proceeds raised from the performances are donated to their chosen charity, the Torrevieja Alzheimer’s Association. The group recently made their annual donation of 5500€ to the AFA President, Purificación García at the Torrevieja Day Centre. The Stagestruck Players perform twice a month with original scripts written by their director, Leigh Humphries.
