Varifocal lenses have become an essential solution for people who need clear vision at multiple distances without constantly changing glasses. However, the quality of the lens makes a significant difference in comfort, clarity, and long-term satisfaction.
The Importance of Lens Quality
Not all varifocal lenses are created equal. Lower-quality lenses may have limited viewing zones, noticeable distortions, or poor adaptation rates. High-quality varifocals, on the other hand, minimize distortions and maximise clarity, making everyday activities much more comfortable. This is why choosing lenses from reputable manufacturers is crucial.
Our trusted brands Hoya and Pentax

Two of the most respected names in the industry are Hoya and Pentax. Hoya, founded in Japan, has grown into one of the world’s leading optical lens manufacturers. Their reputation is built on advanced technology, precision engineering, and continuous innovation. Pentax, also originating from Japan, Pentax has long been recognised for its expertise in optics, not only in eyewear but also in cameras and precision instruments.
The Advantage of Personalised Varifocal Design.
One of the most important developments in modern varifocal technology is personalised lens design. Now we can say a truly tailored design just for you, instead of relying on standard “off-the-shelf” designs, advanced lenses such as our Tailor Made Plus, Select and select plus range use highly specific wearer measurements to optimise performance, these measurements may include the exact position of the frame on your face, Pupillary distance, and other measurements that add to create a truly tailored lens, personalised varifocals reduce distortion, expand the usable vision zones, and make adaptation much easier. The result is a lens that feels natural and provides sharper vision in all directions. Why Investing in Quality Matters with us!
While budget lenses may be tempting, the difference in comfort and clarity is significant. We believe investing in good quality varifocal lenses is truly essential for maintaining the health and benefit of your vision, and that’s why we help by offering the best quality and technology in lenses with prices that are hard to miss out on, from your 2 for 1 where you pay one pair and get another free or, the great offer of 50% off for over 50s on one pair. By providing these options, we make it easier to prioritise your eye health and experience the benefits of superior lens quality without compromising your budget.

For many people living in Spain, particularly expatriates, funeral planning is something that is often delayed or avoided altogether. However, planning ahead can make an enormous difference for families at a very difficult time, offering clarity, reassurance, and peace of mind.

One of the main reasons advance planning is so important in Spain is how quickly funerals must be arranged. In most cases, everything needs to be organised within 24 to 48 hours. For grieving families, especially those unfamiliar with Spanish procedures or facing a language barrier, this can feel overwhelming. Having a plan in place removes the pressure of urgent decision making and ensures personal wishes are respected.
There are different funeral options available to suit individual preferences, from simple arrangements to more comprehensive services, including repatriation if desired. If someone is unsure which option is right for them, there is no need to worry, as plans can be changed at any time, offering valuable flexibility as circumstances or wishes evolve.
Cost is another important factor. The average funeral today costs around €4,500, and it is estimated this could rise to approximately €9,000 within the next ten years. By planning in advance, individuals can freeze costs at today’s rates. Payment options are flexible, with the choice of a one off payment or interest free instalments spread over five years. Once the plan is fully paid, that is it, unlike insurance based arrangements where payments continue indefinitely.
When the time comes, families simply call a 24 hour bereavement helpline. From there, everything is handled by experienced professionals, including the prompt collection of the deceased and coordination of all necessary arrangements. Families are provided with essential documentation, such as death certificates in both Spanish and English, and cremation certificates that allow ashes to be transported by plane if required.
If there is a remaining balance on a plan at the time of need, families have clear options. They can pay the outstanding amount and proceed as planned, or receive a refund of what has been paid, minus a cancellation fee. Funds are fully protected, as all money is placed into a separate trust account rather than being held directly by the provider. Each plan can also include up to two named individuals, offering additional flexibility for couples. Do not wait. Planning ahead gives you peace of mind, protects your loved ones from emotional and financial stress, and ensures your wishes are honoured. With funeral costs continuing to rise, locking in today’s price could save thousands in the long run.

February is the month of love and in the world we are living in at the moment, this love shouldn't just be reflected to our partners, everyone could do with being shown a little bit more love. Whether that is with a kind word or gesture, it can go a long way in making someone smile.
Although on a very selfish personal
note that doesn't mean I won't cherish any gifts my husband wants to unload on me, flowers, chocolates, a meal at a nice restaurant, a weekend away... we can all dream!!
February in Spain also sees the popular Carnival with the majority of towns having some sort of celebrations during this time. Check your local town hall to see what is happening in your own local town.
We seem to have been inundated with different named storms over recent weeks, although more often than not we have been pretty lucky to escape the full forces. I will be pleased when we reach spring / summer time and I promise I will try not to complain that it is too hot.

Nordorthopaedics – advanced orthopaedic care without the long wait
For UK expats, accessing orthopaedic care can be complex. Long waiting times, limited access to specialists, age-related prioritisation, and additional costs for rehabilitation or follow-up care often lead patients to delay treatment.
Nordorthopaedics is a leading orthopaedic clinic in Lithuania, trusted by thousands of international patients - particularly from the UK - who seek high-quality treatment without prolonged waiting times. The clinic specialises in hip and knee replacement surgery, joint arthroscopy, and sports injury treatment. Its medical team includes one of the most experienced orthopaedic surgeons in Europe, Prof. Sarunas Tarasevicius, who has performed 7,000+ joint replacement procedures during over 20 years of clinical practice.

Nordorthopaedics is the only clinic in the Baltic states to offer robotic-assisted knee replacement using the ROSA® system. This technology enables precise implant positioning and personalised surgical planning, supporting improved joint function and potentially faster recovery.

Patient experiences reflect these outcomes. As Jonathan Edward Page, a UK expat living in Spain, who underwent hip replacement surgery, explains:
“In Spain, I was told I would need an older surgical approach at a much higher cost. At Nordorthopaedics, I received minimally invasive surgery, excellent aftercare, and a rapid recovery - I was out of crutches by day five. The skill of the team exceeded my expectations.”
Patient safety is central to the clinic’s approach. Rehabilitation begins shortly after surgery during their stay in Lithuania. Each patient receives an individual programme designed by Prof. Laimonas Siupsinskas, an experienced physiotherapist who also works with the Lithuanian Men’s National Basketball Team, helping patients regain strength and confidence before returning home.
Recognising that travelling abroad for surgery can feel overwhelming, Nordorthopaedics provides international patient support from the first enquiry through to return home, including medical coordination, travel arrangements, transportation, and accommodation. English-speaking staff ensure clear communication at every stage.
Nordorthopaedics welcomes patients from the UK, Ireland, Scandinavia, Canada, the USA, and beyond, many through personal recommendations.

For patients seeking expert orthopaedic treatment, shorter waiting times, and excellent value, Nordorthopaedics offers a dependable path back to mobility. For more information, visit www.nordorthopaedics.com or contact info@nordorthopaedics.com.

Art has no age limit. In fact, some of the most inspiring journeys I’ve witnessed begin not in youth, but in retirement. Many of my students are discovering - or rediscovering - painting at a stage in life where they finally have the time and freedom to explore their creativity.
Each week, I welcome adults into my studio with one simple promise: that art belongs to everyone. You don’t need experience to start; you only need curiosity. Many arrive saying, “I can’t draw a straight line,” but soon find themselves confidently filling canvases with colour, light, and energy. My role is to guide, encourage, and open doors - not only to technique, but to seeing the world in new ways.
For my students, painting often becomes much more than a hobby. It’s a chance to slow down, connect with others, and enjoy the satisfaction of making something with their own hands. My classes often feel like a small community: conversations flow as brushes move, laughter fills the room, and there’s a sense of shared joy when someone stands back and sees their finished painting.
As a practicing artist, I bring my own passion into the studio. My work is rooted in atmosphere and emotion, and I encourage my students to paint with that same openness - to notice the play of light, the movement of the sky, the feeling behind a subject.
The most rewarding part of teaching is watching people surprise themselves. When a student says, “I never thought I could do this,” it’s a moment of pure pride - for them, and for me.

I had intended the previous part of this series to be the last part, but I seem to have opened a can of worms, with questions coming in to me. This means that I'll have to do a final part to clear a few things up.
Firstly an impossible question to answer, two people have asked me if they should spend a few hundred Euros on the Seestar s50 I mentioned in the previous part of this series. I can't possibly answer that, I can say that it's a decent bit of equipment, and that it gives good results but neither of these people knew anything of astronomy, not even the most basic things, so actually using the Seestar would be next to impossible.

The next question I received was from someone who has been using binoculars for a few years and wants to get a telescope. The problem was that their head was suggesting getting a modern compact design, and their heart told them to get a big refractor. Why? Because a big model looks so much more impressive. This is something I've seen so many times at public viewings. People initially want to see through a big refractor but the modern compact (cassegrain) telescope is massively better.
The simplest message here is that the best telescope for someone is one that will be used as often as possible, usually this means a compact easy to set up model.
Next, what do I mean when I say 'learn the basics' of astronomy. This is not so easy to answer, but someone who knows the basics will have a 3D picture in their head of the way Earth moves through space, the way other planets in the solar system move, and the basic layout of the night sky. If you realise that the Earth turning on its axis means that whatever you look at through your telescope will quickly drift out of view unless the telescope can track it, you're part way there. Lastly, and this is a personal point of view, learn the basic constellations, not all the 43 or so northern ones, but perhaps 10 or so famous ones. Why? Because a basic map of the heavens in your head will enable you to find your way around the night sky without too much difficulty. This is sometimes a contentious point of view, one good friend insists that the App he uses on his phone enables him to identify anything in the night sky just by pointing it upwards. I think that knowledge is always better than an App, it's a difference in point of view. I hope we can finally put this series away now and move on to other things.

Patios and semi-open porches have long been a hallmark of Spain’s charming Mediterranean architecture, offering cool breezes and shaded retreats. While the allure of outdoor living is ingrained in Spain’s lifestyle, it’s essential to be informed about the regulations surrounding enclosed spaces. Here are five eye-opening facts to consider:
The enchantment of Spain’s outdoor spaces often leads property owners to enclose patios, semi-open porches, terraces, and more with light aluminium enclosures. Although easy and cost-effective to install, these light enclosures require a major licence due to their substantial impact on property dynamics. Enclosed areas contribute to property size, alter its description, affect ventilation and light, and increase the number of rooms. Ignoring these factors can lead to unexpected legal complications.
The Spanish system mandates that these light enclosures, regardless of their lightweight nature, necessitate a major licence. Failure to obtain the proper licence can result in fines and even demolition orders if detected by authorities. Fines, often surpassing 300€ per m², can escalate quickly. For instance, a modest 10m² enclosure could trigger a 3,000€ fine. Additionally, these unlicenced structures can disrupt the property’s selling process and devalue its market price.
If you’ve already installed such enclosures, a solution exists. A retrospective licence from a qualified Spanish Architect can shield your extension from objections, fines or demolition orders by any authority, irrespective of future legal changes. This proactive step can provide peace of mind and protect your property’s value. continued on the next page

The process to rectify unlicenced enclosures retrospectively is straight forward. Depending on your location, the building work must meet specific conditions. In Murcia, extensions must be at least 4 years old, while in Almeria, the requirement is over 6 years. Alicante mandates completion before August 2010. Notably, extensions previously fined or ordered for demolition are ineligible for retrospective licences.
The
Obtaining a retrospective licence is straightforward. Upon confirmation, Martinez de la Casa Architects will schedule a visit to survey your extension or pool, requiring only your NIE and current Title-Deeds. The resulting Retrospective Licence, stamped by the Official College of Architects or Notarised, will be delivered within a guaranteed 10 working days.
Seeking Clarity and Compliance
Martinez de la Casa Architects leads the way in Building Certification in Spain. Cost-wise, a Pool Retrospective Licence (Certificate of Antiquity) is 326.70€ Iva inc and Extensions cost is 363€ IVA incl, (covering all extensions on the property).
Beyond retrospective licences, we offer Energy Performance Certificates (121€ IVA incl) and Habitation/Occupation Licences, providing comprehensive solutions for property owners.
To clarify uncertainties or embark on the easy path to retrospective compliance, call 665 810 411 (English) or explore our wealth of over 300 clients testimonials at www.martinezdelacasa.com. Your property’s value and legal standing deserve the utmost care.
In Valencia province (Comunitat Valenciana), Spain, vaccines for shingles (herpes zoster), influenza (flu), and COVID-19 are all part of public health vaccination programmes, mainly delivered through the public health centres (centros de salud) of the Servicio Valenciano de Salud.
Shingles Vaccine: The regional health authority offers the herpes zoster vaccine (HZ/su, similar to Shingrix) free through the public system, especially targeting older adults (e.g., cohorts around 65 and 80 years old) and people with risk conditions such as immunosuppression or chronic disease. This vaccine is given in two doses separated by a couple of months and aims to prevent painful complications of shingles. People eligible are usually contacted by their health centre to arrange appointments, though campaigns and reminders encourage uptake.
Flu and COVID-19 Vaccines: Each year, the Conselleria de Sanidad runs a joint vaccination campaign offering both influenza and COVID-19 shots at health centres across the province. Since early November, vaccination has been open to all residents, with the option in many cases of walkin (without prior appointment) at primary care centres or special mobile units. The programme prioritises older adults, people with chronic illnesses, pregnant women, and other risk groups, but extends to the general adult population as well. Flu and COVID-19 vaccines can often be given in the same visit when applicable, and extensive campaigns have administered hundreds of thousands of doses in the region each season.
Residents with a public health card (SIP) should contact their local health centre to check eligibility and appointments. Vaccination may also be available privately through healthcare providers or with private insurance, though the public system covers recommended groups at no cost.

It is that time of year again when the processionary caterpillars are starting to fall from their nests in the pine trees.
The processionary caterpillar is a small but serious threat to animals, especially dogs. These caterpillars are named for the long lines they form while moving, often seen in spring near pine trees. Their bodies are covered in tiny, barbed hairs that contain a powerful toxin. When touched, these hairs can cause intense irritation, allergic reactions, and even tissue damage. Curious pets may sniff, lick, or paw at a caterpillar, leading to swelling of the mouth, tongue, nose, or paws. In severe cases, contact can result in necrosis of the tongue, breathing difficulties, or shock, which can be life-threatening. If your pet comes into contact with a processionary caterpillar, act quickly but calmly. Do not touch the affected area with bare hands. Rinse your pet’s mouth or skin gently with plenty of water, without rubbing, to avoid spreading the hairs. Prevent your animal from licking the area. Seek veterinary care immediately, even if symptoms seem mild at first, as reactions can worsen rapidly. Early treatment can make a critical difference and may save your pet’s life.
