An Eye exam Can Make All the Difference: A Case of Retinal Detachment

World Sight Day takes place on Thursday 8 October 2026, bringing people around the world together to raise awareness of eye health and the importance of accessible eye care. Its message, #LoveYourEyes, encourages us all to make our vision a priority – and sometimes, a routine eye examination can prove far more important than simply checking whether our glasses prescription has changed. At Seepoint Ópticas in Jávea, a recent patient experience demonstrates exactly why. A 53-year-old woman visited Seepoint after noticing a progressive decline in the vision of her right eye over the previous week. She had also begun seeing “floaters” and occasional flashes of light and described feeling as though she constantly needed to clean her glasses, despite the problem actually being within the eye. During a comprehensive examination, including an assessment of the back of the eye, Seepoint optometrist Martín Barrera identified a suspicious area consistent with retinal detachment. Recognising the need for urgent attention, he immediately referred the patient to the Ophthalmology Emergency Department at Dénia Hospital. There, the diagnosis was confirmed and appropriate treatment was carried out. Happily, when the patient later returned to Seepoint for follow-up, she was progressing well and had good vision following her treatment. When your eyes send warning signs Floaters, flashes of light or changes to the visual field can have many causes and do not necessarily indicate a serious condition. However, a sudden increase in floaters, flashes, or the sensation of looking through a veil, shadow or curtain should always prompt an eye examination. Importantly, this patient experienced no pain or dramatic, sudden loss of vision. Her symptoms had developed gradually over approximately a week, illustrating why even seemingly subtle changes should not be ignored. The Tomatina did not disappoint. We had a great day after a shaky start when the bus that was supposed to take my sister and husband didn't turn up. Plan B went into action and they came with us. We were all kitted out in white to get full effect of the tomatoes. Part of the group was in the thick of it whereas I didn't like how crowded it was and enjoyed it from the edge. That meant I was not as tomatoed as some until near the end when I was spotted by a rather over excited group and got totally, but nicely, tomatoed. I am fairly sure tomatoed is not a word, but it is in my vocabulary from now on as it described it perfectly. It was such chaotic fun that I am already signed up to do it all again next year along with 9 other family members. This month we are house swapping again as it is the Moors and Christians celebrations in our town and darling daughter and family are in the main group this year. It is lovely to come in and watch all the processions but great to then go out to her house and not have to put up with the celebrations which go on until well into the small hours. October also sees four important birthdays in our family - darling daughter, gorgeous granddaughter, sister in-law and this magazine which was born in October 1993. Granddaughter has asked for lego and daughter for a weekend without any obligations. I think the lego will be the easiest to find out of those two. Don't forget that the 9th and 12th are fiestas so take into account shop and bank closures and that it will be busier with people making the most of the long weekend. Also don't forget to change your clocks on the 25th. Lastly the new edition of Professional Services magazine is due out at the end of the month so if you haven't booked your space or want to find out more about it then contact your local representative, find their details below. Focus On Publications: Celebrating 33 Years of Growth October 2026 marks a very special milestone for Focus On Publications, as the company celebrates 33 years since it was established in October 1993. What began as an ambitious venture has grown into a well-established and respected business, reflecting the changing needs and interests of the community it serves. Focus On Publications was started by the company’s founders, Frank and Jackie, and for the last 24 years the business has continued in the hands of their son and his wife, Mark and Lesley. Having lived in Spain for nearly 40 years, they, together with the long-serving team at Focus On Publications, have become well known and respected members of their local communities. The journey began with Female Focus, a women's magazine printed in black and white on newspaperquality paper. Over the years, Focus On Publications has continuously evolved, embracing new ideas and opportunities while retaining the values that have been at the heart of the business since the beginning. Thirty-three years is a significant achievement for any company, particularly in an ever-changing business environment here on the Costa Blanca. Focus On Publications has witnessed enormous changes since 1993 – from the early days of printed publications and traditional advertising through to today's digital world and the many ways people now access information. Growth has been an important part of the journey, with three new titles complementing the flagship magazine. Ghost Banana Pops 3 Easy Halloween Treats 2. Ingredients 1. Halloween Chocolate Bark
Ingredients 200g milk or dark chocolate 50g white chocolate Halloween sprinkles Mini marshmallows Sweets or chopped nuts Method Melt the milk chocolate and spread it over a baking tray lined with baking paper. Melt the white chocolate and drizzle it over the top. Scatter with sprinkles, mini marshmallows and Halloween sweets. Chill in the fridge for 1–2 hours until firm. Break into spooky-looking pieces and serve!
3 bananas 200g white chocolate Dark chocolate or chocolate chips Method Peel the bananas and cut them in half. Insert a lolly stick or wooden skewer into each piece. Melt the white chocolate and dip each banana half until covered. Place on baking paper and chill until set. Add two chocolate chips for eyes and a third for a spooky mouth. Tip: Keep them refrigerated until ready to eat.

Ingredients 12 round chocolate biscuits 100g milk chocolate 24 chocolate buttons 48 edible eyes 24 thin liquorice strips Method Melt the chocolate and spread a little over each biscuit. Add a chocolate button to the centre for the spider's body. Place eight short pieces of liquorice around the button for legs. Add two edible eyes. Leave to set before serving. Enjoy these treats at your children's Halloween party, as a school treat or for a spooky movie night!

Goodbye Domicile, Hello "Long-Term Residence" What Does It Mean for You? For decades, UK inheritance tax (IHT) hinged on "domicile" (i.e., the country regarded as your permanent home, rather than simply where you happened to live). Most Britons are born UK domiciled, which meant their worldwide estate was liable to IHT, wherever it sat. Shaking that status off meant proving you'd left the UK for good, and HMRC rarely took anyone's word for it. Since 6 April 2025, domicile has been replaced by a residence-based test. In plain English, if you've been a UK tax- resident for at least 10 of the previous 20 tax years, you will likely still be treated as a "long-term resident" and your worldwide estate has the potential to fall within the UK IHT net. Crucially, that status doesn't vanish the moment you move abroad. In addition to this, from April 2027, unused pension funds are due to be brought into the IHT calculation. That's a big shift for anyone who'd earmarked their pension as a tax-efficient gift to the next generation. So, what could this mean for you? · Your heirs could face UK IHT at 40% on assets which had previously been out of reach. · Spanish succession tax may still apply too. · Wills, trusts and pension nominations set up under the old rules may no longer be valid. · Transitional rules mean your exact position depends on when you left the UK. Now for the good news. With the right planning, much of this can be managed, but only if you know where you stand. Individuals or couples who have been out of the UK for at least 10 years will no longer pay IHT on worldwide assets, but they will still have a potential liability on assets which are situated in the UK. The real question then becomes; is it better to reduce your UK assets, enjoy spending them, or even move them somewhere more tax-efficient? The Bunion or Hallux Valgus is a deformity of the foot caused by a deviation of the first toe towards the middle axis of the foot and a deviation of the first metatarsal towards the outer edge of the foot accompanied by irregular bone growth in the first metatarsal head and articular incongruity of the metatarsophalangeal joint. This causes pain due to inflammation of the soft tissues of the area from constant friction against footwear and from the structural and mechanical alteration due to the bone deviation. When is it recommended to operate on bunions? It is recommended to operate on bunions when they are painful, when osteoarthritis appears or the structural deformity affects walking correctly which in turn affects other levels of the locomotor system. It is also advisable to perform surgery in cases in which as a result of the bunion, the toes are deforming like when the second toe appears hammer-like. We often say yes when we don’t really want to: Yes, I’ll do it. Yes, that’s fine. Yes, don’t worry about me. And afterwards, we often feel exhausted, resentful and sometimes even angry. So why can saying no be so difficult? For most of us in childhood, we learned that being a “good” person meant always being helpful, easy-going, available and accommodating. Perhaps we learned to pay close attention to other people’s moods, perhaps there wasn’t much room for our own needs to be met, perhaps saying what we wanted led to conflict, rejection or disappointment? So we adapted. We became good at anticipating what other people needed and placing that ahead of our own needs. The problem is that an adaptation that helped us feel safe at one point in our lives can become exhausting later. We can end up so focused on keeping other people comfortable that we stop noticing our own discomfort. And this is also where resentment can begin to appear. We give when we don’t want to give, we agree when we don’t really agree, we stay quiet when something bothers us. Later we wonder why we’re so tired of other people. Sometimes the first boundary isn’t saying “no”, it’s noticing that you wanted to. As a first step to changing, the next time before you automatically answer yes, try asking yourself: “If I wasn’t worried about disappointing this person, what would I actually do?” You don’t have to know the answer immediately, let alone act on it. But learning to hear your own answer is a first step. Because having boundaries isn’t about caring less about other people. It’s about remembering that you are responsible for your own wellbeing first and foremost. Looking after yourself includes saying no when you need to, and can mean a big change in your relationships and how people see you. It can also definitely reduce your stress levels and enhance your emotional and mental health. If it feels too much to say no straight off, then buy yourself a little time and tell the person that you need a moment to think about it. These changes can seem small, but they are giant steps in becoming a more assertive and happier you.

Blood donation is a simple act that can make a life-changing difference to someone in need. The Centre for Transfusion of the Valencian Community says hospitals need around 650 blood donations every day to maintain supplies. Blood cannot be manufactured, so hospitals depend entirely on the generosity of healthy donors. Canto Mundial - Voices in Rhapsody Canto Mundial is bringing a brand new concert to two local venues. Voices in Rhapsody visits Albir Social Centre on Thursday 29th October at 7pm, before heading to The Comm in Alfaz del Pí on Wednesday 4th November at 4pm. Musical director Philip Ashley has chosen the songs for Voices in Rhapsody with that spirit firmly in mind, and the result is a concert that moves between the joyful, the tender, and the dramatic over the course of a single evening. Few songs lend themselves to a choir quite like Bohemian Rhapsody. Queen's extraordinary composition has everything a choral arrangement could ask for, and hearing it performed live by a full choir is an experience that tends to stay with an audience long after the evening is over. It is one of several highlights in a programme that also takes in the timeless warmth of What A Wonderful World, which Louis Armstrong made famous and which has lost none of its quiet power in the decades since. There is also a more surprising inclusion in the form of Bella Ciao, the Italian resistance song that has enjoyed something of a global revival in recent years. In the hands of Canto Mundial it takes on a new dimension, and it sits comfortably alongside the gentle optimism of Bridge Over Troubled Water in a programme that is full of contrast. Defending the Earth with the Costa Blanca Astronomical Society
Professor Alan Fitzsimmons, formally of Queen’s University Belfast, will give a public talk hosted by the Costa Blanca Astronomical Society. Fitzsimmons is an expert in asteroid and cometary science and was formally an astronomer in the QUB Astrophysics Research Centre and a member of the Solar System Group. He used world-leading observatories to measure the physical properties of solar system bodies and their composition. The talk, titled Defending the Earth will explain that impacts by asteroids and comets are a staple of modern science fiction. Reality is more complicated, but we now discover thousands of new Near-Earth Objects every year and are in the middle of the first test of asteroid deflection by NASA and ESA. This talk will explain how potentially dangerous asteroids are discovered and tracked. Threat assessment is automatically performed when new data are reported. He will describe the current state of the art, and how new observatories coming into operation will help this effort over the next decade. Anyone who is worried about the future of our planet should be interested in attending. The talk will take place on Friday, October 30th at 19:00 in Casa de Cultura, Denia – Sala De Actos. The Entertainers have had a busy summer

Thursday afternoon, 27th August, saw us gathered at Benidoleig Pool Bar. The Entertainers started their show to the accompaniment of a spectacular lightening show over the hills, as they finished their second song, appropriately entitled Here Comes the Sun. The song selection ensured the dance floor stayed full as we danced and sang along. The Entertainers announced they would be donating their fee to ALMA Proinfancia, the children’s charity based in Pego. The Entertainers were back performing in the Los Arcos garden on Thursday, 3rd September, to support MABS to raise funds for their cancer support activities, to care, comfort and counsel people affected by cancer. The evening was all about having a good time whilst raising money for MABS to keep doing their incredible cancer support work. Early in the show Jo, on behalf of The Entertainers, announced the group would waive their fee so that it could be used by MABS. Frances was very pleased to confirm that the evening had raised more than €1,700. On Friday 18th September Denia U3A continued to celebrate their 20th anniversary with a picnic party at Los Arcos, Pedreguer. The threat of squally rain for the evening meant the garden location had to be forfeited for a dry inside setting. However, this change did not dampen the party mood as the U3A members turned up with their picnics for a double celebration – 20 years and the end of summer, with songs and dancing by The Entertainers. What a super evening of good company, good music and party – additionally €1,400 was raised to be shared by the three local charities supported this year by the U3A, namely Denia Red Cross, Denia Salvation Army and the very vital charity Aprosdeco, a day centre for special needs adults in La Xara. Richard Millington, U3A President, thanked The Entertainers for another fabulous evening, and reminded the members that on October 16th there was a Hog Roast planned for the Los Arcos gardens. EXPLORING THE LOCAL WINE SCENE Most people interested in Spanish wine will have heard of Tempranillo, Garnacha and Monastrell. Tortosí, Bonicaire, Arcos and Forcallà might be a different matter. Last month I wrote about the revival of Giró in Alicante. It got me thinking about some of the other old local grapes I’ve come across on our travels, particularly just a little further inland in Valencia. D.O. Valencia covers a surprisingly varied landscape and is divided into different subzones. Clariano, in the south of Valencia province, reaches down towards the border with Alicante and is only around an hours drive inland from Alicante city. Here vineyards can be found at considerable altitude and some almost-forgotten local grape varieties are being rediscovered. A couple of years ago we visited Toni Beneito at his winery near Bocairent. His project particularly appealed to us because at its heart is the recovery of two old Valencian varieties, Tortosí and Bonicaire. His winery at Finca El Cabeço dates back to 1880, but Toni has breathed new life into it, working with varieties that came close to disappearing. I’ve tasted both his white Tortosí and red Bonicaire and, for me, they’re proof that these grapes deserve to be taken seriously. Toni is making very good wine from them. Another producer who has caught our attention is Javi Revert, based at La Font de la Figuera, also in Clariano. Javi grew up in the village and local varieties are central to his project. He works with grapes including Arcos, Forcallà and Bonicaire, alongside more familiar varieties such as Monastrell and Garnacha. He is restoring old mountain vineyards and has also replanted traditional varieties on steep parcels that had been abandoned decades ago because they were difficult to work and produced low yields. What I like about both projects is that these grapes aren’t being treated as museum pieces. Toni and Javi believe they can make good wine from them today and, in doing so, give them a future. For me, that’s one of the pleasures of discovering Spanish wine. Look beyond the familiar names and you find local grapes that tell us something about the places they come from. The International Choir Teulada, a longestablished community choir on Spain’s Costa Blanca and formerly known as the English Choir, has started regular rehearsals again for the winter season every Thursday afternoon from 4 to 6 at Bar Mediterraneo in Teulada. The choir sings 4-part harmony (soprano, alto, tenor, bass), its members range widely in age, nationality and experience and no auditions or musicreading skills are required. Their repertoire is broad and includes musicals, popular and seasonal music. They regularly perform concerts throughout the year, including themed shows and Christmas events and are regularly asked to perform at the Moraira Moors & Christians festival. The choir is not just about music and proceeds from their concerts are donated to local charities. Inclusivity and community spirit are a big part of their mission. It’s a friendly, multicultural choir with a strong local presence and a focus on both fun and community impact and they welcome new members. A Halloween message from Daadi Charity - Jalón and Moraira October is here - and it’s the month for spooky dressing and frighteningly good fun. But what is the real cost of Halloween? Millions of costumes are bought, worn once and then forgotten or thrown away. At the Daadi shops in Jalón and Moraira, we believe the scariest thing about Halloween shouldn’t be the outfit - it should be the waste! In the UK alone, an estimated seven million Halloween costumes are thrown away each year. With plastic making up around 83 per cent of the material used in many of these outfits, that creates a truly frightening amount of waste. Many shop-bought costumes are made from polyester, a plastic-based fabric derived from fossil fuels. They can take many years to break down and may release tiny plastic fibres into the environment. Jade was a phenomenal vocalist and a member of the local band The Tender Caves. Sadly, in August 2024, Jade was diagnosed with chondrosarcoma, an extremely rare bone cancer. Jade’s family struggled desperately to navigate her treatment, as they were not Spanish-speaking and the medical terminology was hard to understand. Time spent organising appointments and treatment added to the stress and worry. Jade’s mother learned of Cancer Care Together after seeing our posts on Facebook, so she reached out to our Lead Nurse Paula. The whole Cancer Care team responded immediately and everything changed. Paula helped with appointments, ensured medication and treatment were in order and, most importantly, provided emotional support for Jade and her family. Sandra, another member of our nursing team, accompanied them at Dénia Hospital and at Valencia, while Aitziber helped organise and navigate things. Nurse Alison attended to Jade’s needs during the closing stages of her time with us. Even now, after losing Jade, Paula assures the family that Cancer Care Together is always there for them, and Jade’s family says they will never forget what the nursing team did for Jade. Most of all, they advise anyone going through their cancer journey, or supporting a loved one through theirs, that they don’t have to face it alone. This is just one example of our work, but many similar stories go
untold. Our nursing team is funded entirely by your donations, appeals and by fundraising events. Every cent raised goes directly towards caring for cancer patients like Jade and their families. Remembering Jade A major fundraising event called ‘A Night to Remember Jade’ took place on Friday 28th August at the Mañana Bar in Moraira. The response from our friends and the local community was incredible. Music was at the heart of the evening and local vocalists, many of whom were Jade’s friends, performed songs that Jade used to sing with her band. The most emotional part of the evening came at the end, as we had managed to extract Jade’s voice from recordings so that The Tender Caves could play alongside her one more time. It was incredibly emotional, with tears flowing everywhere because everyone missed Jade so very much. More than 200 people came together to celebrate Jade’s life and help raise money for Cancer Care Together. Many local businesses generously donated vouchers and raffle prizes, and some very special items were auctioned off. We are still completing the final count, but the event has already raised a truly astonishing €6,300 for Cancer Care Together. Our next event is on Friday 20th November at the Mañana Bar in Moraira. It will be something completely different, but our aim is the same - to bring people together, celebrate Jade and raise as much money as possible for Cancer Care Together. Missing Your Mojo? How to Rebuild Your Walking Routine After a Summer Slump
The temperatures have finally dropped, the breeze is back, and technically, we should all be practically sprinting out the door. But if you’re looking at your walking shoes and feeling a distinct lack of enthusiasm, you are not alone. I also feel your pain! After months of sweltering heat, holiday disruptions, and entirely justified downtime, your routine hasn't just paused, it might have completely evaporated. And when we break our physical habits, getting moving again isn't as simple as just deciding to do it. As a positive psychology coach, I see this frequently. That stagnant, heavy feeling isn't laziness; your brain and body have simply adapted to a new, lower-energy baseline. Overcoming that inertia requires a bit of gentle strategy, rather than beating yourself up or relying on brute-force willpower. Here are a few proven ways to ease your brain back into the rhythm: Shrink the goal: Forget the ambitious, sweaty hikes for now. Tell your brain you are just going for a 15-minute walk. Lowering the barrier to entry significantly reduces psychological resistance. The 15-Minute Deal: Promise yourself you will walk for exactly ten minutes. If you still feel genuinely miserable after that, you have full permission to turn around and go home. Spoiler: once you cross the threshold, momentum often takes over. Fingers crossed. Use smart rewards: In behavioural science, we call it temptation bundling. Pair your walk with something you genuinely look forward to - an engaging audiobook, or mapping an easy route that conveniently ends near a café for a nice cup of coffee. Borrow some motivation: Accountability works wonders. If you know a friend or a local walking group is waiting for you, the mild guilt of leaving them hanging is usually exactly what you need to get out the door. WhatsApp someone today. Book it in. These are both clubs with over 50 members, like our neighbours the Benidorm Lions. Calpe U3A news
The first coffee session of the Autumn season saw 26 Members meet and chat at Calantura Bistro on 18th September. After the summer break there was plenty of news to share. This is proving a very popular venue with excellent coffee and plenty of room. Four new members were welcomed and Linda Cleary, from the Arts Society, gave a talk on their recently launched 2027 season of events. The President gave details of the U3A events coming up and reminded everyone that all things to do with the Association are on the website www.u3acalpe.org. The Ladies Lunches (JUGS) are moving the time of their monthly lunch to 1.30pm for 2 pm. Any ladies interested in joining please email jugs@u3acalpe.org.
