5 Early Warning Signs You May Need an Eye Exam

Our eyes rarely complain loudly. Instead, they whisper. A slight blur here, a flicker there, a headache that arrives uninvited. It is easy to ignore these small signals, especially when life is busy. Yet recognising the early warning signs can make all the difference to your comfort, clarity and long-term eye health.

Here are 5 signs it may be time to book a comprehensive eye test at Seepoint Ópticas in Jávea.

1. Frequent Headaches

If you are experiencing regular headaches, particularly after reading or screen use, your eyes may be working harder than they should. Uncorrected vision can place strain on the eye muscles, leading to discomfort that is easily avoided with the right prescription.

2. Blurred or Fluctuating Vision

Struggling to focus on road signs, menus or messages on your phone is an obvious signal. But vision that seems to change throughout the day can also indicate that your eyes need attention.

3. Difficulty Seeing at Night

If night driving feels more challenging than it once did, or lights appear dazzling and haloed, it could be a sign that your prescription has changed or that further checks are needed.

4. Eye Strain or Tired Eyes

Modern life means more screen time than ever. If your eyes feel sore, dry or fatigued, a professional assessment can help identify the cause and offer practical solutions.

5. It Has Been Over a Year Since Your Last Eye Test

Even without symptoms, regular eye examinations are essential. Many conditions, including glaucoma, cataracts and macular degeneration, can develop gradually without noticeable warning.

An eye test can also reveal signs of wider health concerns such as high blood pressure and diabetes.

At Seepoint Ópticas, you can benefit from a free comprehensive eye test using advanced diagnostic technology. The experienced team take time to assess not only your prescription but the overall health of your eyes, giving you reassurance and clarity for the months ahead. If any of these signs above sound familiar, do not wait. Book your free eye examination at Seepoint Ópticas in Jávea and take a confident step towards clearer, healthier vision.

Why Private Health Insurance Matters More Than Ever for UK Nationals in Spain

Since Brexit, many aspects of life have changed for UK nationals already living in Spain or considering a move. One of the areas most affected is healthcare. Access to the Spanish public system is not automatic and is not an entitlement for everyone, which means private healthcare is no longer simply an optional extra. For many expats, it has become a necessity.

Healthcare

and Visa Requirements Go Hand in Hand

For UK nationals applying for residency in Spain, whether through a Non Lucrative Visa, Digital Nomad Visa, TIE or Residencia, proof of comprehensive private health insurance is a compulsory requirement. If you are not eligible for the Spanish national health system through employment, a registered S1 form or permanent residency, you must arrange an approved private policy.

This is where ASSSA Health Insurance plays a key role. Accepted for visa applications, ASSSA provides the correct legal certification and helps ensure that you meet Spanish immigration regulations without unnecessary complications.

Why Choose ASSSA

ASSSA offers extensive cover created with expats in mind. Benefits include access to private hospitals and clinics, reduced waiting times for consultations, diagnostic tests and treatments, and a wide choice of specialists. Many doctors within the network speak English, removing the stress of language barriers and the need for an interpreter.

When your policy is used correctly, you can also avoid unexpected medical bills, which offers valuable reassurance when navigating healthcare in a different country.

No Co Payments and No Hidden Surprises

A common mistake is choosing a policy based purely on price. Lower cost options can include limited cover, co payments or exclusions that may not satisfy visa conditions. ASSSA policies come without co payments and include a contractual guarantee that your cover cannot be cancelled due to age, illness or high usage.

In addition, your joining age is fixed, so premiums do not automatically increase simply because you grow older.

Avoid Lengthy Waiting Lists

Although Spain’s National Health Service is highly regarded, it is currently under pressure. Waiting lists for routine appointments and diagnostic tests are becoming increasingly common. For those experiencing discomfort or needing swift answers, private healthcare can make a significant difference.

ASSSA clients benefit from quicker access to medical services, including emergency care and ambulance transport within the approved hospital network.

Support When You Need It Most

Understanding your policy and knowing how to use it is just as important as having cover in place. Jennifer Cunningham Insurance has a dedicated ASSSA administrator available to assist with authorisations, answer queries and communicate directly with the insurer on your behalf.

When it comes to health insurance, the cheapest option is not always the best. The right cover, backed by reliable support, is an investment in your wellbeing and your future in Spain.

What a start to the year we have had weather wise - cold, rain, wind, then 23 degrees, then cold again and wind again. Where I live we have been lucky in comparison to what some areas have been through. On the up side the reservoirs that were struggling are a bit fuller and one of our neighbours had put up some very ugly blue plastic along his fence, which the wind kindly got rid of for us.

Darling daughter and I went to see Andre Rieu in Valencia, I highly recommend it to anyone - seeing Andre Rieu that is - possibly not going to Valencia with darling daughter, she walked my legs off. Joking aside, we had a fabulous time - I think we did every book shop in the city, including the specialist second hand book shops which were fascinating. The concert was something else. It was so much more than a concert - three hours which flew by - the last part was cleverly styled for Spain and Valencia with Los Del Rio singing the Macarena - of course everyone was up dancing at that point.

This month is again going to be a busy month with so much going on including the Wellbeing and Lifestyle Expo, St Patrick's Day, UK Mother's Day, Spanish Father's Day (I try to make the most of both the UK and Spanish days, any excuse for a lunch out is good to me) as well as lots of charity events and fairs to support and enjoy.

Until next time, take care and be kind.

Bunions or HAV?

The Bunion or Hallux Valgus is a deformity of the foot caused by a deviation of the first toe towards the middle axis of the foot and a deviation of the first metatarsal towards the outer edge of the foot accompanied by irregular bone growth in the first metatarsal head and articular incongruity of the metatarsophalangeal joint. This causes pain due to inflammation of the soft tissues of the area from constant friction against footwear and from the structural and mechanical alteration due to the bone deviation.

When is it recommended to operate on bunions?

It is recommended to operate on bunions when they are painful, when osteoarthritis appears or the structural deformity affects walking correctly which in turn affects other levels of the locomotor system. It is also advisable to perform surgery in cases in which as a result of the bunion, the toes are deforming like when the second toe appears hammer-like.

When a patient wishes to undergo an operation a professional should study each case individually, taking into account the age, health status, lifestyle ... etc. At Portalet Clinic, we will explain in detail and alleviate any worries without compromise. What type of technique is carried out at Clinica Podológica Portalet?

We perform minimum incision surgery. As its name suggests, it is done using minimal skin incisions, usually 2 to 4mm. Through these millimetric incisions we can reach the soft tissues and bone, without causing injury to the adjacent tissues.

Advantages of Minimal Incision Surgery: - Immediate recovery as the procedure is minimal. - The patient walks away with a post-surgical shoe without crutches or help. - After just 48 hours the patient can continue life as normal. - Almost painless. - No fixing bolts or needles used. One of the drawbacks of open surgery is the use of fixing materials, with Minimal Incision Surgery fixations are not necessary as the soft tissues themselves, which we have respected, the joint capsule and a light dressing are responsible for this. - Local anesthetic, only affecting the foot, so the dose used is less. - No hemostasia (restriction of blood flow). As the size of the incision is so small, there is little bleeding so there is no need for a tourniquet, thus avoiding all risks of cutting blood flow. - Less risk of infection. The small size of the incisions also decreases the risk of infection. - Barely visible scaring. Many of us like browsing in the local Charity shops, and we are fortunate to have a great selection up and down the Costa Blanca. Most of them are dedicated to one particular cause, which could be cancer support, cats, dogs, children, older people or dementia care.

For more than half a century, The Original Charity Shop has been at the heart of Jávea, raising vital funds to support a wide range of worthy causes and local charities across the region.

Every year we raise significant amounts of money for charities through our vibrant shop, where quality pre-loved goods are sold at unbeatable prices. This incredible success is made possible thanks to the dedication of more than 85 passionate volunteers, who work tirelessly to keep the shop running smoothly and the community spirit alive.

Located at Carrer Nancy 1, in the Arenal area of Jávea, just a short stroll from the sandy beach, the shop breaks all stereotypes of a typical charity store. In January we did a full revamp, resulting in lots of positive feedback from our clients. Forget the cluttered, uninspired image you might have - The Original Charity Shop is bright, well-organised, and stocked with a constantly changing selection of highquality second-hand clothing, household items, and more, all at affordable prices.

In addition to the shop we also have an English language Library and Bookshop in Jávea Park, where some 14,500 books are on loan for a small subscription, with other titles for sale at a euro each.

Whether you’re a local or a visitor, pop in and prepare to be surprised - you never know what treasures you’ll uncover!

Financial Advice from our family to yours

Financial Planning with a Family-Run Business

When you live abroad, choosing the right financial adviser becomes about far more than numbers. It’s about trust, continuity, and knowing that the people advising you will still be there to support you long into the future.

For many expatriates in Spain, a family-run business offers a level of reassurance that larger, corporate firms simply can’t match. When a business is built around a family name, advice is never anonymous. Every recommendation carries personal responsibility, and every client relationship genuinely matters.

Our family setup focuses on long-term financial planning rather than short-term transactions. Our clients are not passed between departments or advisers; instead, they work with people who take the time to understand their full picture - their move to Spain, their retirement plans, their family circumstances and their long-term goals. This continuity is especially valuable for expats, whose financial affairs often span more than one country and evolve over many years.

Living in Spain brings unique financial considerations, from pensions and taxation to estate planning and currency exposure. These are not issues that can be solved with generic advice. They require careful, ongoing planning and a relationship built on clear communication and trust.

Equally important is the human side. Many expats value advisers who take the time to understand their background, concerns and lifestyle - not just their balance sheet. A family practice thrives on reputation and referrals, which means service and integrity are never optional.

When your life is rooted in Spain but your financial decisions reach across borders, working with a familyrun adviser can provide something invaluable: clarity, confidence, and advice you can rely on for the long term.

Finding Your Way Back to Yourself

Introducing Emotional Reorientation Therapy

In a world that asks women to keep moving forward, Emotional Reorientation Therapy invites something far more radical: a pause.

Developed by a senior holistic practitioner with over two decades of clinical experience, The Reorientation Path is a deeply restorative therapy for women who feel emotionally lost, disconnected, or quietly overwhelmed. It is not about fixing or pushing through. It is about gentle realignment.

At the heart of the work is the belief that when safety is restored, clarity follows. The therapy draws on traditional holistic treatments like Reiki, reflexology, acupressure, crystal healing, and aromatherapy skilfully combined with hypnotherapy, EMDR, psychology and auricular treatments. All woven together into a contained, thoughtful process guided by five phases: grounding, release, re-patterning, reconnection, and a final phase devoted to female empowerment. This last phase honours a woman’s inner authority, helping her reclaim direction on her own terms.

Sessions feel less like treatment and more like being carefully supported. Clients often describe a sense of coming home to themselves, a quiet recalibration where the nervous system softens and emotional fog begins to lift.

The name reflects the essence of the work. A path, not a prescription. A compass, not a command. Guidance offered within safety.

The Reorientation Path is especially suited to women navigating life transitions, emotional exhaustion, identity shifts, or longheld patterns that no longer serve. It speaks to those who have done the work, but still feel something is missing.

This is holistic therapy with depth, dignity, and trust at its core. Not loud. Not mystical. Simply profound.

Step into a space of quiet clarity. Book your free consultation and start the journey on your own Emotional Reorientation Path.

Inheritance Tax in Spain (ISD):

What You Need to Know

Inheritance Tax in Spain - one of the most important (and often misunderstood) aspects of inheriting Spanish assets. In part 2, Laura Albors of My Lawyer in Spain shares how Spanish Inheritance Tax works and what factors make the biggest difference to the final amount due.

Inheritance Tax Groups in Spain: Why They Matter

Spanish Inheritance Tax is structured around beneficiary groups. Your group determines the allowances and reductions you can claim.

• Group 1: Children under 21

• Group 2: Children aged 21 or over, spouses, registered partners, and parents

• Group 3: Siblings, uncles, aunts, nieces, and nephews

• Group 4: All other beneficiaries In most Spanish regions:

• Groups 1 and 2 benefit from generous tax-free allowances and, in many cases, reductions of up to 99% of the final tax payable

• Group 3 beneficiaries usually only benefit from the smaller national allowances

• Group 4 beneficiaries do not receive any tax relief

Your family relationship can dramatically change the outcome of the tax calculation

Is the Family Home Fully Taxed?

Not always. Spain allows a reduction of up to 95% of the value of the main residence for close relatives in Groups 1 and 2 (spouses, children, parents, and other direct-line relatives). In some regions, certain Group 3 relatives may also qualify if they are over 65 and had been living with the deceased. To apply this reduction, several conditions must be met:

• The property must have been the deceased’s main residence

• The beneficiary must retain their share for a minimum period (usually five years), unless an exception applies When applicable, this reduction can significantly reduce - or almost eliminate - the inheritance tax due on the property.

How Do You Pay Inheritance Tax in Spain?

Inheritance Tax is submitted using Forms 650 and 660:

• Form 660 details the full inventory and valuation of the estate and is usually prepared first

• Form 650 is the inheritance tax return itself

Some regions require both forms separately, while others combine them into a single filing.

Once completed, the tax can often be paid directly from the deceased’s Spanish bank account, provided there are sufficient funds. Banks are allowed to release money specifically to pay ISD, even if the account is otherwise blocked, avoiding the need for heirs to use personal funds upfront.

Do You Pay Inheritance Tax Twice If More Than One Country Is Involved?

Spain does not have double-taxation treaties specifically for inheritance tax, but it does allow a credit for tax paid abroad on the same assets.

Likewise, many other countries provide relief or credits to avoid taxing the same inheritance twice. Proper cross-border legal and tax advice is essential to avoid unnecessary double taxation.

What Happens If You Don’t File Inheritance Tax?

Failing to file ISD can result in:

• Penalties and interest

• Inability to register inherited property in your name

• Banks refusing to release inherited funds

Filing on time is always the safest and most cost-effective option.

It promises to be a funny and colourful musical with volunteers treading the boards for the first time. The performance is at the Gata de Gorgos Theatre. You’ll find details in this magazine.

This month we feature our charity shop based in Javea Park, where you’ll find quality ladies and gents clothing, shoes, kitchenware, books, bric-a-brac, DVDs, CDs and small electrical appliances on sale. It’s open Monday to Saturday 10am – 1pm at Avinguda de Paris 8, 03730, or phone 965 790 129. How To Brighten Up Large Spaces

The easiest and (most of the time) most economic way to brighten up and old terrace in a garden space is to go with Artificial Grass.

I am working on a project where there is a large existing terrace area, that’s not too pretty and is definitely dated in style, and although we are changing the shape of it to create more border space and depth to the garden, allowing for much more and diverse planting scheme, the simplest thing to cover the area and make it feel alive and vibrant is to lay artificial grass. Because there is already an existing terrace surface this simply means the grass can be installed directly onto the surface. Sometimes people get a little confused and think if they have a terrace area, with tiles or concrete that they may have to remove it and then lay down sand etc, before laying artificial grass. But that’s not the case at all, any hard or preprepared surface is good for us to work off. As long as the surface isn't bumpy then the grass can be laid and glued directly to the surface, making it incredibly economic as a finish material. It is hard to get any new material surface to cover such a large area for the same value.

The great thing is, that if we don’t have to do any prep work, it means we will be in and out in a couple of days, no lengthy messy or difficult process, in, lay and leave. It also means that our grass price is an all inclusive cost as our grass prices include supply of the grass, free delivery (over 50m²), labour to lay, materials to lay and IVA, all included.

The other bonus, other than price versus other materials, is the fact it's tactile, requires no maintenance and looks fantastic. Artificial grass lawns give you all the prettiness of a natural lawn, with none of the hassle. A beautiful green enjoyable safe place, that’s comfy and inviting all year round.

So, if you are thinking about brightening up your dull garden, give Artificial Grass Spain a call. Or look us up on our social media and website.

DroneArt Show: Music That Lights Up the Night

In March 2026 in Alicante, the DroneArt Show: Music That Lights Up the Night will transform the night sky into a breathtaking piece of aerial art. Taking place at the Estadio Municipal d’Atletismo on March 13 and 14, the event brings together cutting-edge drone technology, live classical music, and visual spectacle in an unforgettable open-air performance.

The show uses more than 1,000 illuminated drones that rise into the dark sky to create dynamic, synchronised light formations - stars, flowers, abstract patterns, and shifting images that dance in harmony with the music below. Meanwhile, a live string quartet performs classical pieces under the glow of candles, enhancing the sensory experience and blending tradition with innovation.

Each performance lasts around 65 minutes and begins at 9pm, with doors opening two hours beforehand so visitors can enjoy food, drinks, and the festive atmosphere. The event is appropriate for all audiences and promises a magical night where art, technology, and music converge to paint the Alicante sky with light and sound.

Tickets are available online, by searching for DroneArt Show Alicante.

Why Turning the Volume Up

Doesn’t Fix Hearing Loss

Almost everyone tries it. The television seems a touch too quiet, so up goes the volume. Conversations blur, so we lean forward or ask people to repeat themselves. The phone moves to speaker. It works for a while, which is exactly why many people assume hearing loss is simply about loudness. But hearing is not a dimmer switch. And louder is rarely the solution.

Hearing Is About Meaning, Not Volume. Hearing is a delicate collaboration between ears and brain. It allows us to separate speech from background noise, recognise patterns and understand language with remarkable speed. When hearing begins to change, it is usually clarity that fades first.

High frequency sounds such as s, f, th and k often disappear early. They may be quiet, but they carry crucial detail. Without them, speech can seem audible yet incomplete. Hence the familiar phrase: “I can hear you, but I can’t quite catch what you’re saying.”

When volume is increased, everything is amplified at once: traffic, clattering plates, echoes. The environment becomes louder, not clearer, and listening grows more demanding.

The Hidden Strain. The brain is resourceful and starts filling in gaps using context and guesswork. Most people compensate automatically. But this constant effort is tiring.

Over time, social situations can feel draining. Restaurants become hard work. Group conversations lose their pleasure. Many people begin to withdraw, not because they want to, but because they are exhausted. Sadly, this change is often misunderstood by friends, family and even the person experiencing it.

The Change We Hardly Notice. Hearing loss usually creeps in quietly. Subtitles become routine. Familiar voices lose their crispness. Background noise feels intrusive. Because the shift is gradual, it is easy to dismiss, and the volume button becomes a convenient compromise.

An

Evening of Popular Classics –Open to the Public

The Freemasons of Valencia are delighted to announce a special cultural event featuring internationally acclaimed pianist Professor István Székely and his talented students from Spain and Hungary. This uplifting evening of popular classical music will take place on Saturday, 4 April, at the Espai La Senieta Auditorium in Moraira, beginning at 6pm.

This concert is open to all members of the public. You do not need to be a Freemason to attend. Last year’s performance was met with tremendous enthusiasm, and this year promises to be even more captivating, offering a beautifully curated programme performed by exceptional young musicians. Professor Székely is a distinguished member of the faculty at both the Katarina Gurska Superior Conservatory in Madrid and the Franz Liszt Centre for Special Talents in La Nucia. His reputation as an inspiring performer and educator ensures an evening of outstanding musical quality. Tickets are €20. Bar facilities will be available during the event. To reserve your seats, use the booking link: https://form.jotform.com/242834453941359

All proceeds from the concert will support the development of the new Marina Alta Masonic Centre, a community-focused facility designed to host cultural, charitable, and social activities. Join us for a wonderful night of music in a beautiful theatre setting - everyone is welcome.

For more information on Freemasonry in the Province of Valencia or to enquire about becoming a Freemason, visit www.glpvalencia.com or email Matthew James on sec@glpvalencia.com.

Yet more sound does not restore precision. In some cases it can even create distortion or discomfort.

A Smarter Way Forward. Good hearing is about balance, accuracy and ease. Modern solutions are designed to enhance speech, soften unwanted noise and support the brain’s natural processing, helping conversations feel effortless again.

At Hearingcare Costa Blanca, the focus is not simply on devices but on people: their lifestyles, relationships and confidence. Addressing hearing changes early helps maintain connection, mental sharpness and enjoyment of daily life.

If reading became difficult, we would not keep squinting. We would seek expert advice. Hearing deserves the same practical, stigma free care.

Because better hearing is not about turning things up. It is about bringing life back into focus.

The Surprising Connection Between Your Gums and Your Heart

When most people think about oral health, they picture bright smiles and fresh breath — but the truth is, your gums may be telling a much deeper story about your overall health. Recent research has revealed a remarkable link between gum disease and heart disease, showing that what happens in your mouth can have a powerful effect on your heart.

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, begins when plaque and bacteria build up along the gum line. If left there, it penetrates the gums causing inflammation, bleeding gums, and eventually damage to the bone supporting your teeth. But here’s where the connection to your heart comes in: the same bacteria and inflammation that affect your gums can enter your bloodstream, contributing to the formation of arterial plaque and increasing the risk of a heart attack or stroke.

In other words, a healthy mouth can literally help protect your heart. Studies have shown that people with gum disease are up to twice as likely to develop cardiovascular problems compared to those with healthy gums. The good news? Preventing gum disease is simple with the right careand that’s where Clinica Dental La Plaza in Jávea comes in.

Led by the experienced and compassionate Dr Karen Gardner, the team at Clinica Dental La Plaza takes a holistic approach to dentistry, understanding that oral health is a vital part of overall wellbeing. From gentle cleanings and gum treatments to advanced dental care, Karen and her team are dedicated to keeping both your smile and your body healthy.

Whether you need a routine check-up, treatment for bleeding gums, or simply want to take a proactive step towards better health, you can trust that at Clinica Dental La Plaza — no matter what the issue, Clinica Dental La Plaza is the answer.

Protect your smile. Protect your heart. Book your appointment today at Clinica Dental La Plaza in Jávea and discover how caring for your gums can help care for your life.

CumbreCats Spring Fair – Supporting Our Street Cats

Spring is a time of renewal, community, and coming together - and this year, it also brings a very special event for animal lovers in Cumbre del Sol.

On 28th March, from 11am to 4pm, the El Puig Building in Cumbre del Sol, Benitachell will host the CumbreCats Spring Fair, an arts and crafts fair dedicated to raising funds and awareness for the street cats who call our community home.

Why This Event Matters

Cumbre del Sol is not only a residential area and school location - it is also home to many street cats who rely on the care, dedication, and compassion of local volunteers. CumbreCats works tirelessly to feed, neuter, and care for these cats, helping to keep the population healthy while improving their quality of life.

Events like the Spring Fair are essential to continue this work. Every coffee bought, raffle ticket sold, and donation made directly supports food, veterinary care, and neutering programmes for the cats.

What to Expect at the Spring Fair

The Spring Fair promises something for everyone: Arts & crafts stalls featuring local artists and makers. Live entertainment, including: Elvis Tribute by Alex Ball at 3pm, Pam’s People Dance Group at 12:30pm, BBQ, soul food, coffee & cakes. A tombola with more than 20 prizes, generously donated by local businesses and artists. It’s a familyfriendly, feel-good day out with a wonderful community atmosphere - and all for a great cause.

Join Us & Support the Cats

Whether you come to enjoy the music, browse the stalls, or simply have a coffee and chat, your presence makes a difference. By attending the CumbreCats Spring Fair, you’re helping ensure that the street cats of Cumbre del Sol continue to receive the care and protection they deserve.

Powered by Volunteers – And Always Welcoming More

The CumbreCats Spring Fair is organised by a small but passionate group of volunteers, supported by local businesses, artists, and performers. Community involvement is at the heart of everything CumbreCats does, and new volunteers are always welcomewhether you can help regularly or just from time to time. If you love animals and want to make a positive difference in your local community, this is a wonderful way to get involved and learn more.

For more information and to stay updated follow @cumbrecats on social media. We hope to see you there - let’s celebrate spring, community, and compassion together.

Maskeraid presents this year's feast of literary mayhem and music from 26th to 28th March at the Union Musical Theatre, Gata de Gorgos.

A Grimm Night for Hans Christian Anderson.

(The Pens are Sharp, but the Switchblades are Sharper!)

In the literary underworld, refined "ex-cobbler"

Hans Christian Andersen faces a hostile takeover by the Brothers Grimm - hardened, blacksuited mobsters seeking territorial control. To avoid a "one-way trip to the local forest bog," Andersen proposes a storytelling wager.

However, the characters are tired of being pawns. In a comedic takeover by tropes, the Little Mermaid tries to fire her agent, the Elves go on strike for better pay, the Ugly Duckling attacks like a swan, and the Emperor prepares for a revealing televised makeover.

Leading a rebellion of these and other famous characters, is the bedazzling, glitter-clad Frog Prince, Sir Croakalot.

In this comedic battle of tropes- v- authors, one thing is certain: Happily Ever After is under new management!

Tickets will be on sale from Quicksave Javea and Cancer Care Ondara, but you can reserve and collect at the door by contacting us direct - WhatsApp message to 683 170 070 or email maskeraid22@gmail.com.

SUDOKU

Here are two Sudoku puzzles of different skill levels for you to try. It is not a math game at all - it is a pure logic game.

Fill in the grid so that every row, every column and every 3 x 3 grid contains the digits 1 through to 9 with no repeats, which means that no number is repeated in any row, column or box.

To check your answers go to the back pages of this magazine.

Good luck.

An Early Season Run Out Of New Songs

With the 2026 season of shows for local charities fast approaching The Entertainers took the opportunity, of a sumptuous birthday lunch celebration at the beautiful Vall de Pop restaurant on Sunday 1st February, to try out some of their 25 or so new season songs. With the lunch party seated the Entertainers started their run out of songs, requested by the “birthday boy”, with a couple of last year’s favourites Yesterday Once More and Run, before Jo & Marc gave a superlative performance of the new to them You Don’t Bring Me Flowers – which he apparently talks through, as he can’t sing, whenever he brings flowers from his garden to his wife.

Reliability in Action: The Costa Blanca Business Association (CBBA)

Navigating the service market in a foreign country can be a challenge. For the English and Dutch-speaking communities in Spain, the Costa Blanca Business Association (CBBA) serves as a vital bridge, connecting residents with professionals they can truly trust.

What is the CBBA?

The CBBA is a professional referral network and a legally registered association in Spain. It operates on a "closedcategory" basis, meaning it typically represents one specialist per industry—from legal advisors to tradespeople. This structure eliminates internal competition, allowing members to focus entirely on collaboration and high-quality business referrals.

The Consumer Advantage: A One-Stop Shop

For expats, the CBBA is a "Gold Standard" filter. Finding a reliable contractor shouldn't be a gamble. When you hire a CBBA member, you benefit from:

• Vetted Integrity: Every member is screened for professional standards and legal compliance.

• Accountability: Members rely on their reputation within the group; if they don’t deliver excellence, they risk their standing in the association.

Spot the 13 differences (answers in the back pages)

• A Unified Network: Need a kitchen renovation? CBBA provides the kitchen company, the architect, the plumber, and the electrician. Because members work together regularly, your project runs smoother.

Why Join the CBBA?

For small business owners, the Costa Blanca Business Association acts as a powerful marketing channel. You gain a dedicated "sales team" of fellow professionals who refer your services to their own clients.

Key Member Benefits:

• Warm Leads: Referrals from fellow members have much higher conversion rates than cold inquiries.

• Peer Support: Navigate Spanish regulations and tax laws with the collective wisdom of seasoned local entrepreneurs.

• Digital Reach: Boost your SEO through our directory and blog, reaching the English and Dutch communities more effectively.

Join Us Today

Whether you are an expat looking for a "one-stop shop" of trusted services or a business owner eager to grow through quality referrals, the CBBA is your local partner.

Ready to elevate your business or find a professional you can trust? Visit cbba.es to contact us to attend our next meeting as a guest.

Daadi Clothes Swaps offer FREE weekly

children’s clothing swaps in Jalon and Moraira.

Costa Blanca community initiative, 'Daadi', believe kids grow too quickly so every Wednesday in Jalon and Saturday in Moraira parents can encourage their kids to bring in their clothes that they have outgrown and let them swap for free. So far everyone has had a great time swapping and it is saving families a huge amount of money.

Daadi Founder Lauren Staton says, 'Parents are becoming more mindful regarding where clothes are made so running free swaps give us the perfect opportunity to show them some up-cycled clothes and kinder fibres. They are tired of dressing their kids in plastic and want their kids to understand how and where their clothes are made. We are witnessing a big change'. One thing which is fantastic to see is kids choosing what they want to wear without parents having the worry of what is on the price tag. Grandparents are also joining in by choosing pieces in preparation for kids visiting from UK. Another saving by reducing on luggage costs.

As word is spreading, donations of children clothes keep coming in, some really nice clothes and good quality. Daadi are grateful to parents for their contributions and welcome any donations towards our fund for helping educate kids in India. Follow Daadi on Facebook/Instagram - Daadi clothes swap. The "Big Celebration"

The Comisión de Fiestas de Jesús Pobre is a hardworking crew of 18 locals, usually tasked with organising the village's legendary traditional fiestas. But this year they’re doing things a wee bit differently. Why? Because they’ve been charmed by one of our favourite walking, singing Irish legend's: Niamh O’Sheehan.

Irishwoman Niamh has convinced the festeros that one of the best parties they can possibly host is a proper St. Patrick’s Day bash. A festival no less!

As the saying goes, on St. Patrick's Day, everyone is a little bit Irish. So, whatever your nationality, it's time to get the green on!

At FocusOn Publications, we are already dusting off our Guinness hats and getting very excited, because there’s another massive reason to celebrate: St. Patrick's Day also marks the 14th birthday of one of our most renowned local party bands, GATECRASH. After 14 years, they are still going strong and will be leading a fantastic "birthday jam" on the day, joined by several local musicians. It promises to be a gig not to be missed!

Expect plenty of food and drink being served at the bar, a stage with several awesome music acts all day, dancing from the Careline Theatre, and even a knockout boxing demo from Javea’s own Paddy Brennan’s Academy. Don't be surprised if there are some funny looking little folk with red beards and green hats doing a jig to the tunes of the amazing DJ Daniels! Did we forget to mention Irish Elvis!?

No Car? No Bother! The Festeros have even put on a bus service from Javea & Denia, so you’ve absolutely no excuse. Jesús Pobre is famed for its fiestas, so let’s make sure we don’t disappoint. Let's all attend and create the most amazing day of shenanigans and mighty craic. Sláinte!

Calpe Benissa Lions

The President of the Calpe Benissa Lions, Carole Saunders was delighted to receive a 400€ donation from Suzanna the owner of the L'Ancora Bar on the Altea Albir border.

Suzanna had collected the money from a fund raising event at Christmas. Suzanna's 400€ has been sent to the Lions Charitable Foundation along with 1,600€ that the Calpe Benissa Lions had collected. This money will be doubled by the Charity Foundation and sent to help in the restoration projects of various centres affected by the terrible flooding, the DANA, in Valencia. Over 500,000€ has already been approved by the Charitable Foundation for these projects.

In February the Ex International President of the Lions, Brazilian Fabricio Olieira, now President of the Charitable foundation, visited Valencia to see for himself the Lions work on the project to restore a day centre for the handicapped in Paiporta which had been badly damaged with the flooding. We are waiting for two more projects to get their final approval. He also visited the Melvin Jones spectacle recycling centre run by the Lions in San Vicente de Raspeig.

Calpe Benissa Lions are based at their Charity Shop in Calpe on calle Pintor Sorolla, 15. We are always looking for new members and volunteers. For more information please look on our Facebook, Lions Club of Calpe & Benissa, or call 639 637 520 or email calcalpe@gmail.com.
