This month is going to be a busy one again. There are lots of events I am looking forward to going to locally with something for everyone. Our grandson is festero this year as he is 8 years old. In Calpe it is the 8, 18 and 38 year olds who are festeros each year. At the end of the month it is their big night when the Queens are crowned and their Damas de Honor are chosen.
Before that we have a couple of trips planned. At the beginning of the month we are going to the kite festival and then later on a drone show. As I've never done either I am really looking forward to them both.
For San Juan (La Noche de San Juan) on the 23rd, we will be going down to the beach - I tend to paddle rather than bathe, and I will imagine myself leaping the flames to burn away old troubles, and invite good fortune.
The 21st is Father's Day in the UK so darling daughter will probably make the excuse that we are in Spain when she forgets - funny that she makes the excuse that we are British when she forgets the Spanish one.....
It's getting hotter so remember to drink more water, slap on the sun cream and put on your hat and sunglasses.

PLANNING AHEAD FOR THE BEST PLACE TO VIEW THE SOLAR ECLIPSE
On August 12, 2026, a spectacular total solar eclipse will cross parts of Europe, and Spain will be one of the best countries in the world to observe it from.
A solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes directly between the Earth and the Sun, temporarily blocking sunlight. During totality, the sky becomes dark, temperatures drop slightly, and the Sun’s outer atmosphere, called the corona, becomes visible. In Spain, the eclipse will be especially impressive in northern and eastern regions. Some of the best places to watch it include parts of Valencia, Zaragoza, Bilbao, and Palma de Mallorca. Coastal areas may offer beautiful views, but clear skies are essential, so checking the weather forecast is important.
To watch the eclipse safely, never look directly at the Sun without certified eclipse glasses. Ordinary sunglasses are not safe enough. Viewers can also use pinhole projectors or special solar telescopes.
The best experience will be from open spaces with little light pollution and a clear view of the horizon.

Why Has My Pool Turned Green?
A green swimming pool is a common problem, especially during the warmer months here on the Costa Blanca. Thankfully, there is always a solution - and with the right care, it can easily be prevented.
The green colour is normally caused by algae growing in the water or on the pool surfaces. The first thing to check is whether the pool has enough disinfectant, usually chlorine. However, low chlorine is not the only possible cause. An unbalanced pH, poor filtration, or excessive cyanuric acid can also stop the chlorine from working properly.
Many people think that simply adding more chlorine will solve the problem, but this is not always true. The effectiveness of chlorine depends strongly on the pH level of the water. If the pH is not correctly balanced, the chlorine may not disinfect the pool as it should.
In many cases, green water can be treated with a shock chlorination and by brushing the pool walls and floor. Sometimes, however, certain types of algae are resistant to standard treatment and a specific algaecide may be needed.
External factors can also play a part. Higher temperatures encourage algae to grow more quickly, whilst rain can alter the pH of the water and introduce dirt, organic matter, and other impurities into the pool. This is why regular pool care is especially important in Mediterranean climates.
To help prevent green water, do not reduce filtration hours, especially in summer. Chlorine and pH should be checked weekly, while cyanuric acid and alkalinity should ideally be tested every two weeks.

The Costa Blanca Male Voice Choir is holding its summer concerts in the Cave at Benidoleig on 12th and 13th June. This atmospheric location truly enhances the already uplifting sound that the 30 male voices produce. The programme includes some old favourites like the African chant Senzenia and Bridge Over Troubled Water but also includes many new pieces such as Snow Patrol’s Run and the Lion Sleeps Tonight. Classical music is not forgotten with the haunting song Va Piensero sung in Italian from the opera Nabucco. There are also songs by member groups and of course a solo by our Musical Director, Bass/Baritone soloist John Oliver Edwards. A highlight will undoubtedly be the Choir backing our lovely guest soloist Florrie Wallace singing World In Union. Florrie has been singing at the Choir’s concerts since she was 10 years old and she is now 17 so this will probably be her last appearance with the Choir.

As summer approaches, the talented ladies of the Phoenix Dancers are busy rehearsing for their muchloved annual charity show, taking place on Sunday 21st June at the open-air theatre at the Diamante Beach Hotel in Calpe.
Known for their passion for singing, dancing, friendship, and giving back to the community, the group is once again coming together to raise money for local charities through an evening full of entertainment and fun. Doors open at 8:30pm, and tickets are now available from Marcia’s Dance Centre, with all proceeds supporting local charitable causes. Tickets will also be available at the door on the evening of the performance.
Behind the scenes, preparations are in full swing, and the group is currently looking for backstage assistance, costume helpers, and volunteers to support the production. Thirsty Work
Well, it's June and as much as the temperature isn’t too bad at the moment I write this, I’m sure by the time you’re reading this article things will have warmed up significantly. Even though the temperature now isn’t too bad, I can see my personal water consumption has pretty much trebled already, and that means it’s the same for your lawn.
The amount of water consumed by natural grass lawns throughout the Costa Blanca must be massive, a quick search on the internet gives some astonishing figures with a small grass lawn of about 50m² using approx. 5 litres per m² /per day will use 30,000 litres in just the peak summer months…..
Let that sink in, or permeate, whichever you prefer.
The point is people say artificial grass is bad for the environment…. But when you bear in mind our grass is 100% non toxic, it is rated child safe by E.U. safety laws, it isn’t leeching anything bad into the ground, it requires no lawn mowers (that use fuel), no gardener that has to get to your house, (that uses fuel), no chemicals to maintain it, to get rid of weeds or even help keep it green in winter and, as stated above, it doesn’t use tonnes (literally) of the precious and expensive water commodity that we have here in Spain.

Creative Crafters
We are a diverse group of crafters who meet at 10.30am the first Thursday of every month. Our interests range from crochet and dressmaking to metal sculpting. We are a mutual help group, we bring our own work and solve each others crafting problems. We have a special project, 'Project Dress A Girl'. We make new clothes for little girls in the area who would otherwise never have one. Those who sew make them and others raise funds to buy the fabric. They are distributed through local charities. Too early for Christmas? It would seem it's never too early for The Friends of The Children of EMAUS charity who, every year since 2022, have been organising two huge fayres at Salones Carrasco in Javea, the dates are 8th and 22nd November from 11am.
This year, the fayres have 3 new sponsors. KrazyKraftz, Javea Home Improvements and VillaMía, joining regulars Lumon, Scorchio! and long time sponsor Turner Insurance.
All profits from the fayres go to suppport children in care homes across the region. We aim to exceed last year's total for the charity of over 7600€

Santa will be there in his magical grotto with his elves to see children and family pets. Visits cost 2€ per child and includes a gift and photo opportunity. With delicious food provided by the venue, and fabulous entertainment from The Costa Blanca Male Voice Choir, Montgo Chorale and Caprice Ladies, The Jukes, Adele, and Pam's dancers, these fayres are not to be missed.

More than 200 people crammed into the gallery at Espai la Senieta, Moraira to celebrate the opening of the fourth Art Exhibition of the European Union of Women Marina Alta. A wonderful mix of artists, EUWMA members, Councillors, family and holidaymakers! This was yet another successful event run by these indomitable women to highlight women's issues....this time an exhibition entitled 'How Dare She - women who chose to be different'.
The editor of Focus On Magazine, Lesley Laird, was there, spotting her favourite artwork 'To shape the mould' by multi talented Yolanda de Aguilar Calero, a local artist from Jalon. Yolanda said 'this piece shows what it means to be a woman who dares to rebel' and Lesley loved the fairy tale twist in a Disney set. Thanks for coming, Lesley!
In June, the group is back at their favourite meeting place, Javea Golf Club Restaurant, Friday 26 June at 10.00 for an animated discussion of the challenges of caring - all in an inclusive and secure format. 'Women are the carers of this world, unpaid and exhausted, always there. We need to celebrate them, give them a voice and identify organisations and charities who are there as support systems,' said EUWMA President Margaret Hales.
Other events are in the pipeline: a wheelchair and zimmer frame exploration of access issues, poetry with Clasicas y Modernas and activities for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. All will be made welcome. If you don't speak Spanish you will be helped with interpreters. What more could you wish for?

U3A OLIVA HELPING THE LOCAL COMMUNITY
For many years U3A Oliva has supported an educational charity for the benefit of disadvantaged schoolchildren. El Bastidor provides a safe after school environment where the hundreds of pupils receive help with homework from 30+ volunteers many of them U3A members. These children, at risk of social exclusion, also benefit from gifts at Christmas and an annual donation from U3A members. This year's €500 presented by president, Angela Town, will go towards buying school materials. Angela, having recently been nominated at the AGM to continue her successful presidency says, "We are grateful to our members for choosing to support this worthwhile cause both financially and practically". She praised the voluntary tutoring given and the organisation of the English teaching section by member, Susan Arnott. Angela Town, through her last 3 years as president has increased membership of U3A Oliva to a record 730 and the number of activity groups now stands at 40+. Angela states, "We have a fantastic range of social and educational activities to suit all tastes ranging from Card games to Zumba! This would not be possible without the dedicated committee, group leaders and all who give their time to contribute to the success of U3A Oliva for the benefit of its members." She adds, "New members (of all nationalities) are always welcome and details of how to join and what's on offer to enhance your living in Spain experience, can be found on our website www.u3aoliva.org. The International Choir Teulada
The International Choir Teulada played to a sell-out audience at the BO Moraira bar last month, in a relaxed environment with the audience sitting at tables and enjoying a drink and snack as part of the ticket price.
The concert, appropriately entitled Love and Peace, featured songs such as ‘Seasons of love’ from the musical Rent, Elton John’s ‘Can you feel the love tonight’ and ‘A little peace’, which won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1982 for Germany. Choir member Donna Lawson also sang a powerful solo version of the 1970s hit ‘Love will keep us together’ and the choir’s youngest member from the bass section, Alessandro, conducted the choir singing John Lennon’s ‘Imagine’.
The second half of the concert featured more popular songs on the love and peace theme, all of which were enthusiastically received by the audience, including an amusing solo by the choir’s Musical Director and baritone John Edwards of the Cole Porter song ‘Where is the life that late I led’. The choir’s finale was a Gershwin medley entitled ‘Who could ask for anything more’. The audience did - and were treated to an encore of ‘I’d like to teach the world to sing.’
Pianist Kirsty Glen showed her prowess at the keyboard and also joined the choir in singing the acapella Swahili song ‘Sis ni moja’ (We are one), which is appropriately about human unity and peace across cultures and languages.

The International Choir under the excellent baton of Musical Director John Edwards will be singing at another concert in Moraira church on June 8 at 8 o’clock as part of the Moors & Christians Festival. Entrance is free but there will be a retiring collection for the choir’s charities.

Spain is one of the most exciting wineproducing countries in the world right now, yet many of its most interesting stories remain surprisingly close to home.
With this new wine column, we want to take readers beyond the supermarket shelves and familiar labels to explore the wines, people and places shaping modern Spanish wine culture, beginning here in Alicante and Murcia before gradually travelling further across Spain. Through wine, we will also discover the landscapes, gastronomy, traditions and local characters that give each region its identity, because wine is never just about what is in the glass. It is also about history, climate, family, village life and the culture that surrounds it.
Based in the north west of the Region of Murcia, we, Tony and Teresa, run Sense Experiences and spend much of our time visiting wineries, vineyards, restaurants and food producers across Spain. Over the years we have seen local wines from areas such as Alicante, Bullas and Jumilla gain increasing recognition both nationally and internationally, often while remaining overlooked in their own backyard.
In the months ahead we will meet winemakers, visit vineyards, explore local grape varieties such as Monastrell, and uncover some of the stories helping to shape the modern Mediterranean wine scene. Some columns may take us to bustling coastal cities, others to quiet rural villages where traditions still survive much as they always have.
Above all, we hope this column encourages readers to look at the wines and gastronomy of Spain, especially those found here in the south east, with fresh eyes and a deeper sense of connection to the places they come from.

The kite festival taking place on 6 and 7 June in Castelló de la Plana, just north of Valencia, promises to be one of the most colourful family events of the summer. The festival is held at the beaches of El Gurugú and El Pinar in the Grau de Castelló, along the Mediterranean coast. Known for giant inflatable kites, acrobatic displays and seaside entertainment, the event attracts visitors from across Spain and abroad. Hundreds of kites in different shapes and sizes fill the sky, creating a spectacular scene above the beach. Professional kite flyers perform synchronised routines, while children and families can join workshops to design and fly their own kites. The event combines art, sport and local culture in a relaxed coastal atmosphere. Food trucks, music, beach games and evening activities make the festival enjoyable throughout the day. There will also be illuminated night kites and hot-air balloon exhibitions, adding even more excitement. Visitors can stroll along the promenade, enjoy traditional Valencian food and watch the sky transform into a moving display of colour and creativity. With free entry and activities for all ages, the festival has become an important early-summer celebration on the Valencian coast.

We had an informal meeting at the Antica Roma restaurant when we welcomed our two new members, Sue and Stuart. Our Governor José handed them their pins. José has also given the Club a momento of the year of his Governorship.
We then donated 720€ to the coordinator of the Protección Civil, Calpe, Juan Carlos Rubio, for the purchase of a special foam extinguisher for their fire fighting equipment. Juan Carlos presented our Lions Club with a plaque in thanks of our continuing collaboration.

Ifach Golf Club Donate Euro 8,000 to Make A Smile
The Entertainers were pleased to support Ifach Golf Club charity day on Sunday 10th May, to raise money for the club’s nominated charity – Make A Smile (MAS).
After the downpour of the previous day everybody was pleased to see blue sky and sunshine as the team from Dos Toros restaurant, Moraira, set up the tables on the terrace overlooking the pool and the golf course. The shade covers were all in place and the tables set as the guests and golfers arrived for lunch in this beautiful setting – time for a much-needed cava whilst friends were greeted and we all took our places in readiness for The Entertainers first show of their summer season, with a show full of new songs and firm favourites.
The Entertainers showed immediately that the weeks of practice had ensured they were ready to perform and Here Comes the Sun set the relaxed tone for a first set of listening music, whilst watching The Dollies perform their new dance moves. The wonderful selection of new songs raised happy memories, including Killing Me Softly, ShBoom and Queen of Hearts, but the not-to-bemissed finale of the first set was an amazing performance of I am a Good Girl, from the hit show Burlesque.
This had set the level for the second set and almost from the first words of Proud Mary the dancers were up occupying every bit of space that had been left. New songs, Listen to the Music, The Boxer and Hi Ho Silver Lining ensured all the dancing spaces were fully occupied till their last songs, a medley of favourites from the Beatles.
At the mid-performance break Tony Grande, President of Make A Smile, explained the back ground to the charity and why it is still so necessary to help children in their worst hours of need. His words encouraged guests to bid generously in the auction, under Paula’s guidance and encouragement, which with the raffle and additional donations on the day enable Chris Barratt, the Club Captain, to present the charity with a cheque for over €7,282. On behalf of the charity Tony was moved by the donation, which would allow them to do so much more for the children presently in their care. At the end of the event Chris received a further donation to make the amount going to MAS a huge €8,000 – with special thanks to the unknown donor. What a super start to the summer season of sunny days, charity lunches and wonderful performances by The Entertainers, who have even more new songs to present.

If the weather on was a test for the ladies of MOFTAG, they passed it with flying colours on the day of their Charity Fayre, a bi-annual event organised by the members to raise funds for various charity organisations based in CALPE. Although the weather can only be described as diabolical, with torrential rain, flooded streets, and even a clap or two of thunder, nothing was going to stand in the way of these determined and generous ladies!
MOFTAG (full name Mighty Oaks from Tiny Acorns Grow) has been running these fundraisers for over forty years, one in May and another in November, and they have raised tens of thousands of euros in that time.
A recent change of venue to the Plaza Centre in Calpe has worked out very well and, with the wholehearted cooperation of the Plaza’s management, the Club is able to take advantage of the larger space….and best of all, it is under cover!
More than ten stalls were set up under the watchful eye of President Jenny Godfrey, who managed to remain calm under all circumstances and by 10am, they were able to welcome their first ‘customers’ of the day.
The stalls were split between the ‘have a go, and win a prize’ type to two huge tables, one selling bric a brac, the other, hand sewn household items and soft toys. As ever, the huge raffle, overseen by birthday girl Carol Withers, proved as popular as ever, and Jenny Godfrey expressed the club’s grateful thanks to all the local businesses who had so generously donated valuable prizes.
One of the highlights of the morning came when Calpe Mayoress Ana Sala paid a visit to the Fayre, offering her support, and thanking everybody for their hard work and fundraising, which directly benefits the people of the town. On this occasion, there were too many volunteers present to be named individually, but all the ladies, supported by a handful of significant others, can be proud of the magnificent result on the day, more than 2500€ being raised to support future projects.
When the members of MOFTAG are not busy fundraising, they enjoy various forms of get togethers, including lunches, coffee mornings and social activities. Calpe U3A monthly meeting
27 U3A members attended the coffee morning at the Calpe tennis club last month. Our speaker was Demi Hobbs from DINDINS, a food company who deliver meals to your home in our local area. Demi explained that all the meals are suitable for people who are not able to cook for themselves. A whole weeks tasty food can be delivered to your home once a week on a Monday. Menu print outs were left for us to take home. We had a treat as Demi brought apple pie and custard as a sample gift, one for everyone in the audience.
