Our trip to Valencia was lovely. We stayed close to the Ciudad De Las Artes - City Of Arts And Sciences which is just amazing to walk around. We didn't actually go into any of the areas so we need a trip back for that. We did a lot of steps round the old town and along the park. Lots of good food and architecture and of course people watching. Some of the Christmas markets were set up which were lovely with some unique gift ideas. I got Christmas sorted and even got lovely wrapping paper. I'm going back at the end of this month with darling daughter to see an Andre Rieu concert - can't wait. Valencia really is worth a visit if you haven't been there I highly recommend it. Can't believe it has taken us so long to go, but it's normally the places close to where you live that you overlook when looking for a getaway. We are having a window war at home - I throw them all open every day to let in the fresh air and 'him in doors' goes round closing them all up..... we still haven't had to have the heating on though and only just got the socks and thick jumpers out. Darling daughter, who was born here, isn't as tough and has been wrapped up like an Eskimo with the heating blasting.... the difference between growing up in North of England and in her case Andalucia - southern Spain.... Key Dates for Financial Calendar We trust you all had a lovely festive period and are looking forward to the New Year ahead. Let's hope 2026 is full of nothing but happiness and prosperity. Given that we are at the very start of the year, we thought it was a timely opportunity to remind Spanish tax residents of their fiscal obligations throughout the year. Below are some key dates to look out for in the calendar. Remember, the Spanish tax year runs in line with the normal calendar year, from 1st January to 31st December. This could be different to other countries systems; for example, the UK's, which runs from 6th April to the following 5th April. - Modelo 720 Declaration: This is a non-taxable, worldwide asset declaration that needs to be completed by the 31st March 2026. Spanish tax residents should declare all overseas assets (outside of Spain) which have a value of 50,000€ or more, assuming no previous declarations have been made. The value taken for each asset is calculated as per its value of 31st December the previous year and includes bank deposits, investments, and property. - “La Renta” Income Tax Return: This is the generic income tax return which most people will have experienced in the past. The income tax return has to be completed by the 30th June 2026 but is often done as early as May, allowing accountants to get ahead of the game. Spanish tax residents have an obligation to declare and pay tax on any worldwide income which is outside of any exemptions/ allowances. Each person has a personal allowance to offset against income, which rises depending on age and other factors. - Wealth Tax “Impuesto de Patrimonio”/ Solidarity Tax “Impuesto de solidaridad a las grandes fortunas”: These taxes apply to both residents and non-residents alike but only affect individuals with significant estates. Any tax liability starts after the personal allowance has been deducted; usually set at between 500.000€ and 700.000€ per person, depending on which autonomous region you live in within Spain. There are also additional allowances for main residences. The declaration for the Wealth tax has to be done at the same time as La Renta, i.e. by the 30th June 2026. It may be that some (or all) of the above declarations are not applicable to you given your circumstances but if you have even the slightest doubt, we would strongly recommend that you check your position. Step-by-Step Guide To Inheriting Spanish Property - Part 2
Our specialist team in Spanish wills and inheritances, have created a series of articles about inheriting in Spain. Part two of this step-by-step guide provides the actions needed to take when a friend or relative has unfortunately passed away. Read through the first three steps in last month’s magazine or on the My Lawyer in Spain website. Step Four Once we have verified who inherits the Spanish assets according to the will or intestacy rules, we will apply for the tax identification number (an NIE) for the beneficiaries as it is compulsory to refer to this number in the inheritance deed. In some occasions when an executor is involved in the inheritance process, an NIE for the executor will be also required. The NIE is issued by the local police in Spain and once obtained, it has to be registered with the Spanish tax office. The lawyer instructed by the beneficiaries in Spain would normally obtain the NIE using the power of attorney (POA) which is the document whereby the beneficiaries authorise a lawyer to act on their behalf in order to complete the probate process in Spain. The POA is signed at a notary office either in Spain or abroad. The lawyer will draft the POA and will liaise with the notary. If the POA is signed out of Spain, it must be legalised in order to be valid here in Spain. Step Five Now that we know who inherits the Spanish assets, the law that applies and we have a list of the assets in Spain along with the Power of Attorney and NIE for the beneficiaries, we are ready to proceed with the signing of the Spanish deed of acceptance of inheritance. However before the deed is signed, it is necessary to prepare an estimate of the costs that will be payable once the Spanish deed of inheritance is signed. In essence the costs will comprise notary fees, land registry fees, inheritance tax and the plusvalia (a local town hall capital gains tax payable on period of ownership) and any other fees or costs that may have arisen in the process such as outstanding community fees. These costs will then be deposited with the lawyer in order to settle the costs, after the deed has been signed. ....... continued from previous page The inheritance deed must be signed at the notary office, the notary witnesses the signature and content of the deed. This is why we say the deed is a “public document” as the notary is considered a public authority in Spain appointed by the Spanish government. Therefore signing the deed implies that the inheritance process will be formally declared and public authorities as the tax office in Spain will become aware of it. In practice the lawyer will provide all the original documentation to the notary prior to the appointment with the notary for him to verify that all the legal requirements are met. The lawyer can have the inheritance deed signed on behalf of the beneficiaries as long as the lawyer has their POA. It means that the beneficiaries do not need to attend personally the meeting with the notary public if a POA was granted. The inheritance deed will reflect the beneficiaries details and the estate value. Based on this value the inheritance taxes will be settled. If a property exists we will normally use either the official valuation from a valuator, the market value as stated by a real estate agent or the minimum tax value as assessed by the tax office. Whichever the value we use the tax office is always entitled to challenge the value if they consider it is low. If a bank account exists the bank certificate issued by the bank will reflect the account balance on the date of death. Once the deed has been signed, it will be collected, notary fees paid, inheritance taxes settled and then sent to the Foreigner office in Madrid to be stamped after which the deed can be sent to the local land registry where the property is registered if the assets includes property, so the heirs can be registered as owners. If the assets include bank accounts or shares, then the deed will be sent to these financial institutions so that the funds can be transferred to the heirs and the accounts closed or in the case of shares, these can be sold. BEGINNING IN ASTRONOMY - The third bit

In the first two parts of this little series I’ve talked about starting observing with binoculars, something I consider a near essential part of learning the night sky. In the second part I mentioned the danger of wasting money on poor cheap telescopes. In this part I’ll go up-market a bit and talk about some of the newest self guiding astronomy camera telescopes. So, what is one of those? What I’m talking about is not a telescope you look through, it’s a computerised instrument that once you’ve learnt to use it properly gives rather good images, photos if you want to call them that, of things in the night sky. A decent one can just be put down and connected up, it will know where it is, and point precisely at whatever target you choose, they’re also incredibly compact. They work best on deep sky objects such as nebulas and galaxies, and less well on planets although even when pointed at Mars, you’ll see more with one of these than you could ever see with your eye through a small home telescope. How do they work? I’m not going to get too technical about this, suffice to say that a truly dark sky is vital and when connected via an appropriate app on your phone, they know exactly where they are and where they are pointing. This allows them to rotate slowly to counteract the rotation of the Earth and stay locked on to whatever target you have chosen. They then will take a long series of pictures and automaticity stack them together, resulting in a high resolution image. Not long ago all this was either impossible or would have needed a stack of technology costing a fortune and needing a lot of skill and knowledge to use, now most of us can spend a few hundred Euros and get excellent results. How good are the results? surprisingly good actually, certainly good enough for most people. They are not as good as a dedicated proper telescope and astro camera set up, but something like that needs a lot of money and a huge amount of skill to use properly, for an occasional user or someone who wants an easier introduction these devices are excellent. Lastly, which one and how much to spend. This is the hardest part, the problem with technology is that a great model today is out of date in a few months. You could keep putting off spending your money and never actually get anything. Look at models from Zwo like the Seestar s30 and s50, and models from Dwarflabs and Vaona. Prices begin a little over 500€. This month I’ve tried to give the impression that these instruments are relatively simple to use, which is true, but you will still have a learning curve and if you aren’t reasonably proficient in astronomy and computer and phone use it will much harder. The Committee and volunteers at Cancer Care Jávea wish our readers a Happy New Year for 2026, and hope you enjoyed a wonderful Christmas and a good start to the New Year. The ‘focus’ for us starts again, with more fundraising activities planned to raise the funds needed to maintain our dedicated nursing team. This month, we’ll introduce some of our staff who provide tireless support and care for patients and their families during their times of need. Lead Nurse Paula was recently promoted to this important role. After joining us in 2024, Paula soon became hugely popular with our patients. Paula says her goal as a registered nurse is to “support her clients and be their voice if they can’t express themselves, to be their advocate and support them and their loved ones on whatever journey they are on”. To contact Lead Nurse Paula please call 722 684 093. Nurse Alison, a registered nurse in Spain, is also a valuable member of our team. Alison tells us that her aim is “always to put the patients first and act in their best interest, hoping to make a difference to someone who is struggling with cancer”. Nurse Sandra, also a registered nurse in Spain, recently joined us and has been a nurse for 13 years. Her valuable experience ranges from acute emergency care to supporting patients receiving palliative treatment. Throughout her career, Sandra has learned that every person facing illness needs not only medical care, but understanding, time and compassion as well. Aitziber plays a vital role as our Patient Liaison Co-Ordinator and Interpreter, and is located almost full-time at Denia hospital. You probably met Aitziber if you’ve attended our fund-raising events. Aitziber ensures all our patients are being looked after, offering them essential translation and liaison services in association with the medical staff. Every year, the budget for the Cancer Care Jávea nursing staff tops over €111,000. To help raise these funds we have three shops, all staffed by volunteers. The Calpe and Benissa Lions have had a bumper fund raising year in their shop on Calle Pintor Sorolla,15, in Calpe, and with their annual events of the Fashion Show at El Toro, and outdoor Concert at Bill and Pat Ingram's. We would be nowhere without our volunteers, and what a wonderful team they are. We thanked the volunteers with an excellent luncheon at Antica Roma, and a box of luxury chocolates at Christmas. U3A MARINA BAIXA LAST BUT NOT LEAST
U3A Marina Baixa held their last General Meeting of 2025 with 72 members in attendance, many of whom were wearing Christmas jumpers and already getting into the Christmas spirit. A record 633€ was raised for Charity through the sale of raffle tickets and 128 gifts were donated for children of needy families in Alfaz and Albir. An outstanding response, both of which exceeded the previous year's figures, and ensured some very happy children at Christmas and Three Kings. In addition 500€ was donated to the Food Bank in Alfaz and 500€ to the Gandia Hospice for homeless men. There was an exhibition of handmade items and paintings by the Craft and Watercolour groups and after the meeting 38 members enjoyed lunch at Restaurante Sunrise in Albir. The next meeting of U3A Marina Baixa will be their Annual General Meeting on Monday 26 January at 11am in the Casa de Cultura, Alfaz del Pi. New members are always welcome. My name is Jayne Nuttall Blake, I have been a nurse here on the Costa Balance for the last 18 years, I am delighted to be expanding my role as a Menopause Specialist Nurse with the Women’s Health Clinic EU, where I support women across Europe through online consultations who feel they may be struggling with the physical and emotional challenges of perimenopause and post-menopause. Salones Carrasco Christmas Fayre Success
A huge thank you to everyone who visited one, or both, of the Christmas Fayres at Salones Carrasco in November, held in aid of The Friends of The Children of EMAUS. The fayres were busy, festive, happy events enjoyed by all. In total, after expenses, over 7500€ was raised for the approximately 125 Children who are in care homes in our region. This is even more money than was raised at the fayres in 2024. The money is much needed and gratefully received. Not only do we want to thank everyone who attended, but all the volunteers, including the 6th form pupils of Lady Elizabeth School. Grateful thanks, too, to all our performers who gave up their Sundays to entertain us. To all local businesses who donated to our hamper raffles, competitions and tombolas, including Ale-Hop, our grateful thanks. V-16 beacon becomes mandatory
From January 1, 2026, Spain’s traffic authority - the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) - is introducing a major change in how motorists must signal a breakdown or accident on the road. The traditional reflective warning triangles will no longer be accepted as the legal way to warn other drivers. Instead, all vehicles must carry and use a DGT-approved V-16 emergency beacon with built-in geolocation technology. The V-16 beacon is a small amber flashing light that can be activated without leaving the vehicle and placed on the roof to signal that your car is immobilised. Its 360° light improves visibility, and the geolocation function automatically sends your exact position to the DGT’s traffic management system (DGT 3.0), helping alert other drivers and emergency services in real time. Only certified, connected V-16 devices are legal after the deadline - old models or non-connected lights will not comply and could lead to fines. The aim of the new rule is to improve roadside safety, especially on high-speed roads, by reducing the need for drivers to exit their vehicles to place warning devices. There has been opposition to replacing triangles entirely with the V16, with the argument that the beacon alone isn’t always visible enough - especially on curves, in bright daylight, or in certain road conditions - and some say it is better to use both (where safe for the driver) for real safety. Remember - always keep your reflective vests and V-16 beacon in a place you can reach them without having to exit the vehicle before using them.

Steady Step Strolls: Walking Together at an Easy Pace In 2026, the Walk Your Way Well community is delighted to introduce Steady Step Strolls. A new monthly walking initiative designed for people who want to move gently, comfortably, and without pressure. They will take place once a month in Jesus Pobre. These strolls are ideal for those who may be a little older, prefer a slower pace, or simply want to enjoy walking in a relaxed and social way. They’re not about fitness targets or fast miles. Instead, Steady Step Strolls focus on connection, confidence, and calm movement, all in a welcoming and supportive environment. Each stroll is short and manageable, usually around three kilometres, along flat, easy terrain. We always walk at the pace of the slowest participant, ensuring that everyone feels included and at ease. People with mobility issues, or those recovering from illness or injury, are warmly welcomed — there is no pressure to keep up or push beyond comfort. A special evening of music arrives in Gata de Gorgos on Thursday 29th January at 7.30pm, when well-known Costa Blanca performers Gillian Hodges and Philip Ashley take to the stage at the Unión Musical for their concert, 'Anything You Can Do!'. Creative Crafters
We are a diverse group of crafters who usually meet at 10.30am the first Thursday of every month - but our January meeting will be Thursday 8th January. Our interests range from crochet and dressmaking to metal sculpting. We are a mutual help group, we bring our own work and solve each others crafting problems. We have a special project, 'Project Dress A Girl'. We make new clothes for little girls in the area who would otherwise never have one. Those who sew make them and others raise funds to buy the fabric. They are distributed through local charities. Join us at the DAR Family Centre, Ctra. European Union of Women of the Marina Alta Annual Meeting - 21 January
Welcome to 2026! We hope your year will have health and happiness. After a bumper 2025, the European Union of Women (EUWMA) of the Marina Alta will hold its Annual Meeting on Wednesday 21 January in the Jávea Golf Club Restaurant at 10am. A video review of the multitude of events and activities through 2025 will be followed by the usual statutory requirements of an annual meeting. A new committee will be voted in. All are welcome to attend, but only members have the entitlement to vote. After the coffee break interesting activities will focus on women's issues, including the alarming development of misogyny. The meetings of this organisation are never boring! Plans are already in place for International Women's Day in March and the Fourth EUWMA Art Exhibition in April. Jalon Valley Help Say Thank You – with Mince Pies & Carols
On behalf of Jalon Valley Help (JVH) the Entertainers opened their Carols in the Square season on 2nd December, in the centre of the beautiful village of Lliber. Then on Friday 5th December, in the church square in Orba, on Tuesday 9th December, in church square in Xalo and finally on 22nd December in the magical church square in Alcalali. JVH arrange these fun events to thank the community for their support and donations through the year, which enable them to provide medical equipment to anyone in need in the community. With JVH giving away mince pies and chocolates an eager audience had gathered so as the clock struck 6pm the Entertainers opened their show by wishing Merry Christmas Everyone and then gave a wonderful show of a wide range of seasonal songs. The evenings had something for everyone and the Entertainers closed by wishing everybody Feliz Navidad and finished with their favourite Love Shine a Light and thanked everybody for their support throughout 2025. On behalf of JVH Lorrie Harkness thanked everyone for coming and wished everyone a very merry Christmas.
