September Eye Care: Looking After Your Eyes as the Heat Lingers
September may signal the end of the holiday season, but here on the Costa Blanca the heat, strong sunlight and dry conditions can continue well into the month. That means your eyes may still need extra care, particularly if they feel tired, gritty, irritated or unusually watery. High temperatures increase evaporation from the surface of the eye, which can make dry-eye symptoms worse. Air conditioning and fans may add to the problem by blowing dry air across the face. If your eyes begin to sting or feel sandy, try to avoid sitting directly beneath a vent, take regular screen breaks and remember to blink fully, especially when using a phone, tablet or computer. Hydration matters too. Drinking enough water supports the body’s natural tear film, while lubricating eye drops may help if dryness becomes persistent. However, not every drop is suitable for every person, particularly for contact lens wearers, so professional advice is always sensible. Swimming remains popular well into September, and pools, sea water and hot tubs can all irritate the eyes. Contact lenses should not be worn casually in the water, as bacteria can become trapped beneath the lens and increase the risk of infection. Well the lazy days with my sister turned into lots of little adventures. We went to a village close to Teruel to see the total eclipse and the perseids meteor shower, tagging onto a very well organised trip by the Costa Blanca Astronomical Society. They had organised it a year before and I am so fortunate that they let me tag on a week before the event. It was fantastic and we both did a lot of ooooing and aaaaahing. We saw a Queen tribute and danced a lot and sung ourselves hoarse. We did some lunching and talking, lots of talking. Poor hubby definitely needed ears plugs by day two. I liked one of her outfits so much that I persuaded her not to take it back - 'cos that is what sisters do.... We watched my grandson and the other festeros enjoy their parades and events. My granddaughter is in the local 'batucada' band playing the shaker so she was in a lot of the parades as well. It was a great 12 days that felt like a month as we packed so much in. We are now planning Christmas much to hubby's delight... As I write this my next adventure is the Tomatina as I feel it has to be done at least once and although we live so close I have never done it. I've got a snorkel mask that covers my nose and eyes and have packed ear plugs as I don't fancy them full of tomato juice. I'm going with a group of friends, also my other sister and family are here and they are booked to go as well so it's going to be another fun trip. These are some of the most common mistakes we see: Not understanding how UK pension income is taxed in Spain Many expatriates assume that because their pension originated in the UK, it will be taxed there. In most cases however, once you become a Spanish fiscal resident, your pension income becomes liable to Spanish income tax. The rates and thresholds are different, and without proper advice the tax implications can come as an unwelcome surprise. Failing to declare foreign assets via Modelo 720 Spain requires fiscal residents to declare foreign assets above certain thresholds using the Modelo 720 declaration. Failure to do so (even through simple unawareness) can result in avoidable penalties. It is one of the most overlooked obligations amongst newly arrived expatriates. Holding too much wealth in cash Many expats keep large sums in bank accounts, either through habit or a desire for security. What many don't realise is that cash held in Spanish or UK accounts is fully declarable, potentially taxable (if earning interest), and quietly losing real value to inflation every year. It can feel like the safe option, but over time the cost of doing nothing can be considerable. Not having a Spanish will Many expatriates assume their UK will covers their Spanish assets. In practice, having a properly drafted Spanish will is strongly advisable and can make an enormous difference to how smoothly an estate is administered - and how much tax is ultimately paid by the people you leave behind. Murcia makes an excellent day trip for anyone looking to combine history, culture, shopping and traditional Spanish food. The regional capital has a relaxed atmosphere, a beautiful historic centre and plenty to discover on foot. Start your visit at Plaza del Cardenal Belluga, one of the city’s most impressive squares. Here you’ll find Murcia’s magnificent Cathedral, a mixture of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture. Take time to admire the elaborate Baroque façade and the 93-metre bell tower, one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks. Inside, the richly decorated interior includes the tomb of Alfonso X of Castile and the Chapel of the Apes. From the cathedral, wander through the narrow streets towards the Real Casino de Murcia. Dating from the 19th century, this fascinating building combines several architectural styles and is famous for its lavish interiors, including an impressive Moorish-style courtyard, grand ballroom and ornate rooms. Next, head towards the Plaza de Santo Domingo, a lively area surrounded by cafés and historic buildings. Nearby is the Romea Theatre, an elegant 19th-century theatre named after the Murcian actor Julián Romea. For a relaxing break, make your way to the Floridablanca Garden, Murcia’s oldest public park. The Calpe Benissa International Lions Club are staging another Finca Jacaranda Concert. Javea Feral Cats launch its fifth Padel Tournament and Family Festival Sunday is going to be the fun day. It will be a family festival filled with live music, entertainment, stalls and one of the biggest luxury raffles. All in aid of raising money for The Javea Feral Cat Association (JFCA). The dates for your diary are Saturday 3rd October and Sunday 4th October. The Sunday family festival starts at 12 noon at Club de Padel, Paris 24, Avinguda de Paris, Javea. The padel Tournament is on 3rd and 4th October, with tournament trophies presented by Rosa Cardona, Mayor of Javea. On Sunday, the fun day, there will be entertainment from 12 noon by Ian Hunt singer and Mike Dennison DJ and Master of Ceremonies. There are stalls of Carol’s Jams and Chutneys and Cortado’s cake stall that will be open all day, or until the jams, cakes and pastries run out! Luxury raffle prizes include fabulous wine hampers and a variety of vouchers from local salons, shops, gym, Amazon gift vouchers and local restaurants. Javea Feral Cats is an association run entirely by volunteers, from volunteer trustees to volunteer trappers and volunteer feeders. An association originally set up to reduce the number of kittens born into feral life by neutering. Over the years it has grown to include looking after colony and street cats’ welfare; that includes feeding and neutering colony cats. Every registered cat feeder who visits on Sunday will be given a bag of dry cat food. JFCA are always needing new volunteers, so if you are interested in becoming a registered feeder or trapper visit the volunteer stand. Easy homemade protein bars 1. Cranberry, Coconut & Seed Ingredients – makes 8 bars 120g rolled oats 60g vanilla protein powder 40g unsweetened desiccated coconut 40g pumpkin seeds 30g dried cranberries 2 tbsp sunflower seeds 100g almond butter 2 tbsp honey 60–80ml milk or plant-based milk Method: Combine the oats, protein powder, coconut, pumpkin seeds, cranberries and sunflower seeds. Warm the almond butter and honey very gently until soft, then stir into the dry ingredients. Add enough milk to create a thick mixture that holds together when pressed. Transfer to a lined tin and press down firmly. Refrigerate for at least one hour before cutting into bars.

Peanut Butter & Oat Ingredients – makes 8 bars 150g rolled oats 100g natural peanut butter 80g protein powder, vanilla or unflavoured 2 tbsp honey or maple syrup 80ml milk or plant-based milk 1 tbsp chia seeds 1 tsp vanilla extract Pinch of salt Method: Place the oats, protein powder, chia seeds and salt in a bowl. Add the peanut butter, honey, milk and vanilla extract, then mix thoroughly until you have a thick, sticky mixture. If it seems too dry, add a little more milk. Press firmly into a small, lined baking tin and refrigerate for at least one hour. Cut into eight bars and store in the fridge. 3. Chocolate, Almond & Date Ingredients – makes 8 bars 150g pitted dates 100g almonds 75g rolled oats 50g chocolate protein powder
2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder 1 tbsp chia seeds 2–3 tbsp water Pinch of salt Method: Put the dates and almonds into a food processor and blend until they form a coarse, sticky mixture. Add the oats, protein powder, cocoa, chia seeds and salt. Blend again, adding the water a tablespoon at a time until everything starts to stick together. Press firmly into a lined container and refrigerate for around an hour. Slice into eight bars. Homemade bars are easy to adapt. For extra fibre, add ground flaxseed or chia seeds. For more crunch, try chopped walnuts, hazelnuts or pumpkin seeds. You can also replace dried cranberries with chopped dried apricots or raisins. Keep the bars refrigerated in an airtight container. Because they contain fresh ingredients without preservatives, they are best eaten within about a week. Enjoy.

This month we’d like to highlight and thank all our volunteers who have stepped up to the mark and covered lots of extra days for their colleagues, working tirelessly both in our Gata and two Javea stores. Every cent we raise or is donated goes directly towards paying our three Cancer Care Nurses and our Liaison Administrator at Denia hospital – a vital service that’s needed ever more in our community. Our mission never stops, and our Mission Statement is as strong as ever: ‘To support, care for and improve the lives of people touched by cancer in the Marina Alta’. We’d like to welcome Freddie, Sylvia, Jo, Lieve, Pauline and Sharon as our latest recruits, and Alan Winstanley who helps from the UK editing our magazine and is also co-ordinating the development of our new website. Last month we began our journey through the wine regions of eastern Spain close to home, with D.O. Bullas. This month we head north along the Mediterranean to D.O. Alicante – a wine region many of our readers will have virtually on their doorstep. Earlier this year, we unexpectedly bumped into the same Alicante winery twice on our wine travels. The first occasion was in Madrid in May at Tim Atkin Master of Wine’s Best of Spain 2026, an event bringing together some of Spain’s most highly rated wines. Among just four producers representing the wider Levante region was Pepe Mendoza – Casa Agrícola. We had also encountered Casa Agrícola much closer to home at Winecanting, the annual celebration organised by Vinos Alicante DOP at Alicante’s port, bringing together wineries from across the province. So perhaps Casa Agrícola was trying to tell us something! Based at Finca Abargues in Llíber, in the beautiful Marina Alta, Pepe Mendoza’s philosophy is one that particularly appeals to us. After more than 25 years working with the soils, grape varieties and climate of Alicante – as well as travelling to places including Chile, New Zealand and Argentina in search of knowledge – Pepe increasingly came to realise that what he was looking for was already back home in Alicante. Old vineyards, traditional Mediterranean grape varieties, dry farming and respect for the landscape are now at the heart of Casa Agrícola. Its 12 hectares of Giró and Moscatel Romano were planted between 1920 and 1970 and are organically cultivated without irrigation on traditional terraces bordered by centuries-old dry-stone walls. And this brings us to one of the things we love most about discovering different Spanish wine regions: indigenous grape varieties. In this case, Giró. It is hardly a household name, even among regular wine drinkers, but Giró is an important part of the historic viticultural landscape of the Marina Alta. One of the most interesting wines is Giró de Abargues, a 100% Giró that allows this local red grape to take centre stage. Pepe has gone even further with Fierroca, also 100% Giró, produced from three small terraces in the highest part of Finca Abargues. This is precisely what makes exploring Spanish wine so exciting. Of course we all know Tempranillo, Garnacha and Monastrell, but scratch beneath the surface and you discover grapes, vineyards and traditions that belong to very particular corners of Spain. D.O. Alicante has plenty more for us to explore – from its famous Moscatel and Monastrell to the historic sweet Fondillón – but Giró and Pepe Mendoza’s Casa Agrícola seem a very good place to start. Today, lacing up my boots remains a cornerstone of both my physical fitness and my continuous alcohol-free journey. Living without alcohol can sometimes seem daunting or even a bit peculiar in our society. However, I love using this wonderful Focus On platform to share a simple, lived truth: stepping away from alcohol is one of the most rewarding choices you can make for your mental, emotional, and physical health. Recently, I attended a four-day music festival in the sweltering Madrid heat. While the soaring temperatures certainly made an icy beer seem tempting in the moment, I knew that reaching for water was the smarter, more nourishing choice. Because of that decision, I was able to soak up the vibrant atmosphere and experience every single note of every song with complete, beautiful clarity. If you ever find yourself worrying that your relationship with alcohol might no longer be doing you any favours, please understand that you are not alone. I gently suggest spending a little time sitting with those thoughts. Try not to shy away from the difficult questions. An alcohol-free life is entirely possible and deeply fulfilling. U3A Marina Baixa September news During August, several of the U3A Marina Baixa groups took a short break but are now all restarting again this month. Members have access to 10 groups offering a range of activities or interests which are all offered free of charge as part of the Annual Subscription of 10€. Weekly groups available are Petanca, IT help, Crafts, Chaps and Chats. Monthly groups consist of Watercolour, Wine and Dine, Picnics, Wine Tasting, Warren's Wanderers, Ten-pin Bowling and Solo Amigos. In addition to these groups on most months there is a trip allowing members to visit places of interest within about a 2 hour drive of Benidorm. On 4 September U3A Marina Baixa will be returning to the beautiful botanic gardens of L´Albarda in Pedreguer followed by time exploring the historic port of Denia.
20 Year Celebration
On 9 October the Association will be celebrating 20 years of providing local ex-pats with friendship and support. This milestone in its history will be marked with Afternoon Tea at Altea Golf Club and promises to be a memorable occasion for celebrating the success of U3A Marina Baixa. There will be a grand raffle to raise funds for local charities, to which over 2000 euros has already been donated this year.

www.focusonpublications.com Benidorm will be awash with colour, music and celebration on Saturday 5 September when the city hosts its spectacular Benidorm Pride Parade, ending the Pride Festival Week. The parade takes place from 4:30pm to 6pm, beginning in the Rincón de Loix area and continuing along the famous Levante Beach. Thousands of spectators are expected to line the seafront to enjoy a vibrant procession of colourful floats, performers, DJs and dancers. From Levante, the parade heads through Benidorm towards the Old Town, where the streets will come alive with music and Pride celebrations. With its lively atmosphere, flamboyant costumes and international crowd, it promises to be one of the most colourful events on Benidorm's calendar. But the party doesn't stop when the parade finishes. From 6:30pm until midnight, the official Benidorm Pride Parade After-Party takes over the Auditori Julio Iglesias. The open-air venue will become a huge Pride party, with spectacular stage production, DJs, live performances, impressive lighting and powerful sound. Thousands of visitors from Spain and around the world are expected to join the celebrations, making this a major highlight of Benidorm Pride Week. Whether you come for the parade, the after-party or both, it promises a full day and night of music, colour, inclusivity and celebration in the heart of Benidorm.

The Club was awarded a banner for being the Club that donated the most to the Lions International Charity Foundation for the Valencian flood victims. Though we donate the majority of our funds to local causes, recently we donated 500€ to buy goods to be sent to Venezuela earthquake victims. The Benidorm Lions Club, paid for a container that they filled with urgently needed goods for Venezuela. Our Club sent them 500€ to buy what was needed the most, and the container went by sea to Venezuela. The Lions International Charity Foundation, sent 200,000 dollars to the Lions Governor of Venezuela the week of the earthquake to buy food and water for the victims. We make most of our funds from our wonderful charity shop, situated on Calle Pintor Sorolla, 15, Calpe. We have wonderful nearly new clothes, bric a brac, bedding, and antiques. Donations of all types gratefully accepted. The shop is open every day except Sunday, from 10am until 1pm. We are always in need of new members with new ideas, and volunteers to help run the shop.
