Glaucoma: Silent Thief of Sight

World Glaucoma week returns from 8-14th March 2026 shining a spotlight on one of the world’s leading causes of irreversible blindness. According to global estimates, more than 4.5 million people have already lost their sight to glaucoma, often without realising anything was wrong until it was too late. EARLY DETECTION SAVES SIGHT.

What exactly is glaucoma?

Glaucoma is an eye disease that slowly damages the optic nerve, the cable that sends visual information from the eye to the brain. If it is not treated it can cause permanent sight loss or blindness.

The most common types include:

• Primary Open Angle Glaucoma (POAG): develops slowly and silently, with NO symptoms, symptoms only appearing after permanent vision loss.

• Angle Closure Glaucoma (ACG): a sudden pressure spike leading to eye pain and blurred vision, progressing very quickly and requiring urgent treatment.

Why is it so dangerous?

It usually develops very slowly, the early stages have no symptoms. Vision loss starts with peripheral (side) vision and once sight is lost it cannot be restored. That’s why Glaucoma is often called “The Silent Thief of Sight”

Who is at risk?

Anyone…

• over the age of 40

• with a family history of Glaucoma

• with long term steroid use

• with HIGH Myopia

• with High Blood Pressure or Diabetes

Can it be treated?

Yes, but not cured. Treatment aims to stop or slow further damage:

• Eye drops (most common)

• Laser treatment

• Surgery

That is why regular eye exams are essential because Glaucoma can be detected before you start to lose vision.

So even if you don’t need glasses, this February and March make an appointment for an Eye Health Check with our team at Seepoint Opticas. With advanced diagnostic equipment and patient focused approach Seepoint is ideally placed to help protect your sight for the future. Call 966 463 420 today to book your free eye test. Your future vision is worth it.

Making Funerals in Spain Stress-Free

For many people living in Spain, particularly expatriates, funeral planning is something that is often delayed or avoided altogether. However, planning ahead can make an enormous difference for families at a very difficult time, offering clarity, reassurance, and peace of mind.

One of the main reasons advance planning is so important in Spain is how quickly funerals must be arranged. In most cases, everything needs to be organised within 24 to 48 hours. For grieving families, especially those unfamiliar with Spanish procedures or facing a language barrier, this can feel overwhelming. Having a plan in place removes the pressure of urgent decision making and ensures personal wishes are respected.

There are different funeral options available to suit individual preferences, from simple arrangements to more comprehensive services, including repatriation if desired. If someone is unsure which option is right for them, there is no need to worry, as plans can be changed at any time, offering valuable flexibility as circumstances or wishes evolve.

Cost is another important factor. The average funeral today costs around €4,500, and it is estimated this could rise to approximately €9,000 within the next ten years. By planning in advance, individuals can freeze costs at today’s rates. Payment options are flexible, with the choice of a one off payment or interest free instalments spread over five years. Once the plan is fully paid, that is it, unlike insurance based arrangements where payments continue indefinitely.

When the time comes, families simply call a 24 hour bereavement helpline. From there, everything is handled by experienced professionals, including the prompt collection of the deceased and coordination of all necessary arrangements. Families are provided with essential documentation, such as death certificates in both Spanish and English, and cremation certificates that allow ashes to be transported by plane if required.

If there is a remaining balance on a plan at the time of need, families have clear options. They can pay the outstanding amount and proceed as planned, or receive a refund of what has been paid, minus a cancellation fee. Funds are fully protected, as all money is placed into a separate trust account rather than being held directly by the provider. Each plan can also include up to two named individuals, offering additional flexibility for couples. Do not wait. Planning ahead gives you peace of mind, protects your loved ones from emotional and financial stress, and ensures your wishes are honoured. With funeral costs continuing to rise, locking in today’s price could save thousands in the long run.

We had a great time at the Careline Theatre pantomime - Oh yes we did.... Grandson (8 years old) did a lot of shouting and booing - not necessarily at the right time - but with so much enthusiasm it was almost as entertaining as the panto. Granddaughter at 11 was much more reserved but still loved every minute of it and us adults had as much fun, if not more with all the jokes and innuendos you expect from a good panto. Well done to all involved. A couple of nights earlier I went to the ballet with a friend which was also very enjoyable in a totally different way.

We are now looking forward to a couple more local concerts which we have coming up and I have booked to go back to visit my sister in the UK in April. I've already started the countdown in 'sleeps'. I've booked a big case thinking that I will need a lot of clothing but have ordered quiet a few things you can't get here, so may have to take it empty and use her jumpers in order to fit everything in on the return journey. Our annual week away to Mojacar is also booked so we have our scattered treats sorted until summer. It's good to have things to look forward to otherwise it can easily become the routine of 'all work and no play'.

Being Valentine's this month and therefore the month of love, I hope you all have a very lovely time whatever you are doing. Until next time, take care and be kind.

Financial Advice from our family to yours

The Real Return on Financial Planning Is Peace of Mind

As an expat retiree, your financial life is often more complex than you expected.

Different tax systems. Multiple pensions. Overseas investments. Currency risk. Questions about residency, healthcare, and how long your money really needs to last.

Many people assume that if they’ve saved well and invested sensibly, everything will fall into place. But without a clear plan, even strong finances can feel uncertain.

Financial planning isn’t about chasing higher returns or reacting to headlines.

It’s about bringing structure, clarity, and confidence to your entire financial picture - across borders and over the long term.

A well-built financial plan helps you:

· Understand how your income, pensions, and investments work together

· Make informed decisions about tax, withdrawals, and spending

· Reduce unnecessary risk and complexity

· Feel confident that your lifestyle is sustainable - now and in the years ahead

Most importantly, it gives you the freedom to enjoy retirement without constantly worrying about “what if”.

The real value of financial planning isn’t found in spreadsheets or market predictions.

It’s found in knowing where you stand, what your options are, and that your decisions are aligned with your life - not just your money.

A Beard, a Brave Cause and a Brilliant Result

Most fundraisers involve running shoes, sponsored silences or the occasional brave dip in cold water. Roddy, one of our very own magazine salesmen, decided to do things a little differently. Armed with a razor and a healthy sense of humour, he shaved his beard straight down the middle and then lived with the consequences for a full week.

Yes, a full seven days of meetings, coffees, handshakes and raised eyebrows, all while sporting half a beard and half a freshly shaved face. It was impossible to ignore, which of course was entirely the point.

Roddy’s half-beard challenge was undertaken to raise funds for Cultura Contra Balas, a local NGO dedicated to supporting young people affected by the war in Ukraine. The stunt officially began on Saturday 10 January at Calle Convent 3 in Jesús Pobre, during a special live music event featuring 13 incredibly talented young Ukrainian musicians. The music was beautiful, the atmosphere was warm, and the shave itself was, frankly, hilarious.

Behind the laughter, however, lies a deeply serious mission. Cultura Contra Balas focuses on the psychological recovery of war victims and has already helped 374 people through rehabilitation camps for women, doctors and children. In early 2026, the organisation will welcome two new groups of Ukrainian women to a recovery camp in Jávea, where professional volunteer psychologists will provide essential trauma support.

Roddy saw the challenge through to the end, and the results speak for themselves. After seven days and countless double-takes from the public, he has raised well over €1,000 for the charity. Not bad for half a beard.

The grand finale came with a full shave, generously provided free of charge by Ana of Creative Hair Salon in Javea, an existing advertiser and supporter of the magazine. Their gesture helped close the fundraiser in style and deserves a big thank you. While they rose magnificently to the occasion of this rather unconventional request, Creative would like it known that they also excel in perfectly normal haircuts, colours and styling for everyday humans. Whether you’re after a tidy trim, a bold new look or simply not half a beard, they’ve got you covered. It was a week of laughs, conversations and community spirit, all in support of something truly important. Proof that sometimes, looking a little ridiculous can help make a very real difference.

Inheritance Tax in Spain (ISD): What You Need to Know

Inheritance Tax in Spain, known as Impuesto sobre Sucesiones y Donaciones (ISD), is one of the most important (and often misunderstood) aspects of inheriting Spanish assets. Laura Albors has created a practical, step-by-step overview of how Spanish Inheritance Tax works, who pay it, and what factors make the biggest difference to the final amount due.

What Is Inheritance Tax in Spain?

ISD is the tax payable when you inherit assets located in Spain. This includes property, bank accounts, investments and other Spanish-based assets.

The amount of tax payable depends on three key factors:

• The region of Spain whose rules apply

• Your relationship to the deceased

• The value of the assets you inherit

Each of these elements can significantly affect the final tax bill.

Do You Pay Spanish Inheritance Tax If You Live Abroad?

Yes. Anyone who inherits assets located in Spain is subject to Spanish Inheritance Tax, regardless of where they live. Being non-resident does not exempt you from ISD. Spanish tax law applies to the assets, not the heir’s country of residence. Which Spanish Region’s Rules Apply?

Inheritance Tax in Spain is largely governed at a regional

level. Each Autonomous Community sets its own reductions, allowances, and bonuses, which apply regardless of nationality or residency.

To determine which regional rules apply, you must first establish whether the deceased was a Spanish resident:

• If the deceased was resident in Spain: The rules of the region where they were resident apply.

• If the deceased was not resident in Spain: The rules of the region where the highest value of Spanish assets is located apply.

This is a crucial step, as the difference between regions can be substantial. Always check the specific regional regulations that apply to your case.

How Long Do You Have to File Inheritance Tax?

The inheritance tax must be filed within six months from the date of death.

You can request a six-month extension, but this must be done within the first five months.

Importantly, ISD must be paid before heirs can take ownership of the inherited assets. Delaying the process often leads to unnecessary complications, so it is best not to leave it until the last minute.

DIGITAL CONFIDENCE

Why are AI Deep fakes so dangerous?

Deep fakes are a growing problem for any organisation or private individual on the the internet. They can be especially dangerous when weaponised by nation-states and cybercriminals. When people think about deep fakes, they often picture fake videos or voicecloned calls. In reality, the bigger risk runs much deeper. Deep fakes are dangerous because they attack identity itself, which is the foundation of digital trust. Unlike traditional fraud, which relies on stolen or leaked data, deep fakes allow criminals to recreate existing or create entirely new people - complete with faces, voices, documents, and believable behaviour. These identities can look legitimate from the very first interaction.

Be Sensible

I still come across a handful of clients who still want natural grass, something that with all my professional knowledge as a garden designer and seasoned landscaper I totally disagree with, but sometimes clients have their reasons and if that’s what they wish then so be it. You can take a horse to water…..

But if there is one place I will always disagree with natural lawns no matter what, is when it’s a small space.

I have seen countless gardens where it may be just a small strip lawn, I've see some with a total size of less than 5m², what’s the point, can you seriously add up how much the water cost and maintenance cost for a lawn like that would be. Regardless of your feelings about artificial grass, to have such a small area and not change it to artificial grass is just sheer lunacy.

Regardless of the cost to remove the natural grass, create a new subbase and the artificial grass itself, the cost will still be worth it, compared to the hassle of having a gardener come in, mow, make a mess (often a lot of these small strip lawns are next to pools) the hassle, the water. What for?

I think we can all agree that at some point common sense has to kick in, and this is the time. Artificial grass product is at a great place, great products that look great, need practically zero maintenance and are just wonderful.

Take the plunge stop wasting time and money. Speak to Artificial Grass Spain today.

Nordorthopaedics – advanced orthopaedic care without the long wait

For UK expats, accessing orthopaedic care can be complex. Long waiting times, limited access to specialists, age-related prioritisation, and additional costs for rehabilitation or follow-up care often lead patients to delay treatment.

Nordorthopaedics is a leading orthopaedic clinic in Lithuania, trusted by thousands of international patients - particularly from the UK - who seek high-quality treatment without prolonged waiting times. The clinic specialises in hip and knee replacement surgery, joint arthroscopy, and sports injury treatment. Its medical team includes one of the most experienced orthopaedic surgeons in Europe, Prof. Sarunas Tarasevicius, who has performed 7,000+ joint replacement procedures during over 20 years of clinical practice. Nordorthopaedics is the only clinic in the Baltic states to offer robotic-assisted knee replacement using the ROSA® system. This technology enables precise implant positioning and personalised surgical planning, supporting improved joint function and potentially faster recovery.

Patient experiences reflect these outcomes. As Jonathan Edward Page, a UK expat living in Spain, who underwent hip replacement surgery, explains: “In Spain, I was told I would need an older surgical approach at a much higher cost. At Nordorthopaedics, I received minimally invasive surgery, excellent aftercare, and a rapid recovery - I was out of crutches by day five. The skill of the team exceeded my expectations.”

Patient safety is central to the clinic’s approach. Rehabilitation begins shortly after surgery during their stay in Lithuania. Each patient receives an individual programme designed by Prof. Laimonas Siupsinskas, an experienced physiotherapist who also works with the Lithuanian Men’s National Basketball Team, helping patients regain strength and confidence before returning home.

Recognising that travelling abroad for surgery can feel overwhelming, Nordorthopaedics provides international patient support from the first enquiry through to return home, including medical coordination, travel arrangements, transportation, and accommodation. English-speaking staff ensure clear communication at every stage. Nordorthopaedics welcomes patients from the UK, Ireland, Scandinavia, Canada, the USA, and beyond, many through personal recommendations.

For patients seeking expert orthopaedic treatment, shorter waiting times, and excellent value, Nordorthopaedics offers a dependable path back to mobility. For more information, visit www.nordorthopaedics.com or contact info@nordorthopaedics.com.

Women today: anger, voice and change

The new Committee of the European Union of Women, elected at their annual meeting in January, is already planning its activity for International Women's Day. Margaret Hales, elected again as President, said 'This Day, and the days around it, are very important for the women of the Marina Alta, as it gives us an opportunity to raise women's issues in creative ways, capturing the interest of women of all nationalities who live in this area'. EUWMA will be collaborating with the women's committees in Benitachell. Jávea and Teulada Moraira as well as holding their own event on 6 March at their usual venue of the Restaurant at Jávea Golf Club at 10.00. 'We invite friends and acquaintances, whether you have met us before or if you are curious about what we do' wrote secretary Kathleen Misson in their mailing to members. 'We will be discussing 'Women today: anger, voice and change' Our discussions are always lively and we will consider practical issues which we all encounter, as women, in our lives'.

International Women's Day (IWD) has been around for over a hundred years, as have many of the issues still affecting women's achievements. Since 1911, IWD belongs to all who care about gender equality. Come and join us. Celebrate women's achievements. Raise awareness about discrimination. Take action! See you on 6 March at 10.00 in the restaurant of Javea Golf Club.

For information about EUWMA, see the website www.euwmarinaalta.org, Facebook https://www.facebook. com/groups/euwma or email euwmarinaalta@gmail.com. The meetings are in English and Castellano. Many other languages are spoken by our members so you will always be included.

Walk Your Way Well

Disconnecting to Reconnect

The world feels like a strange place at the moment. As I write this, I’m packing a suitcase to travel to Bulgaria for a ten-day Digital Reset as part of an Erasmus+ programme, and it’s happening at a time when social media feels louder and more relentless than ever. The stream of information, opinions, fear, images, and urgency often feels like more than I have the capacity to process. Sometimes my brain feels like it's imploding! How about you?

I’m not entirely sure what I feel about stepping away. Part of me wonders if I’ll miss something important. Another part of me suspects that switching off my phone for ten days might be one of the healthiest things I can do. My reliance on my device has quietly deepened over time - for information, for comfort, for entertainment, for connection, for reassurance. And while all of those things have value, I find myself questioning how much of them should really be coming from a screen, rather than from other people and the tactile world around me.

I don’t have answers. What I do have is curiosity. Curiosity about how social media shapes our behaviour, our attention, and our emotional wellbeing. Curiosity about how often we reach for our phones automatically, and what we might find if we paused instead.

I’m looking forward to learning a great deal during this training and to sharing those insights in next month’s article. My other real concern, if I’m honest, is the minus temperatures in Bulgaria! How often will I get to step outside and stretch my legs?

So while I’m away, I’ll ask you to do me a small favour. Get outside when you can. Move your body. Connect with nature. Go for a walk. Be present. Don't bring your phone! Be kind to yourself. See you on the other side. Walk Your Way Well.

Montgó Chorale choir donation

In December the Montgó Chorale choir was delighted to give their traditional celebration of Christmas in the Loreto Church (also known as the Fishermen's Church) in Jávea.

As in other years, a collection was taken for Cáritas, the church’s charity that does such important and worthwhile work supporting local families in need. Thanks to a large, responsive and very generous audience a donation of €1700 could be made to Caritas!

On January 15th members of the choir Steering Group met with Cáritas representatives outside the church to present the cheque.

A date for diaries!... Montgó Chorale will be presenting their spring concert at the Loreto Church, Jávea on May 23rd. Further details will be announced nearer the time.
