I am writing this whilst packing for a ten day trip to see my sister in the UK. Ten days of just the two of us, no husbands, no work, no real plans. We are like kids counting down the sleeps and our husbands are wondering if they should put a limit on the credit cards (joke). 'Tis The Month Of Maying
The popular Costa Blanca choir Cantãmus brings its latest concert, *'Tis The Month Of Maying*, to the beautiful Ermita San Josep in La Fustera, Benissa, on Saturday 9th May 2026, with the performance beginning at 4pm.
Under the musical direction of Philip Ashley - the Costa Blanca's well-known music and theatre producer - Cantãmus will present a programme that ranges from beloved popular classics to timeless choral gems, promising something for everyone. The concert takes its name from the Renaissance madrigal *Now Is The Month Of Maying*, a nod to the season and spirit of the event.
But audiences can equally look forward to some of the most recognised and best-loved songs of recent decades. Spanish Personal Income Tax: key obligations for tax residents

Spain continues to attract a growing number of expatriates. However, relocating to Spain also brings certain tax obligations that should be understood from the outset, particularly in relation to Personal Income Tax (IRPF).
In Spain, the income tax filing period for the 2025 tax year will begin on 8 April and will end on 30 June 2026. Tax residents in Spain should remain mindful of their tax obligations.
Under Spanish tax law, an individual is generally considered tax resident in Spain if they spend more than 183 days in Spanish territory during the calendar year. Tax residence may also arise where the individual’s main centre of economic interests is located in Spain.
For expatriates moving to Spain, becoming a tax resident has important implications, as Spanish residents are normally required to declare their worldwide income, regardless of where it was generated.
Not all residents are required to submit an income tax return. In general terms, individuals must file a return if their employment income exceeds 22,000 € per year when received from a single payer, or 15,876 € per year when the income is received from two or more payers.
Certain foreign pensions, including many UK pensions, are
not subject to withholding tax in Spain. As a result, taxpayers receiving this type of income may still be required to file a Spanish income tax return even if their income does not exceed the usual €22,000 threshold.
In addition, individuals who receive investment income, may also be required to submit a tax return depending on the amount and type of income received.
How much I am going to pay?
Spanish income tax is progressive, meaning that higher levels of income are taxed at higher rates.
Income derived from employment or pensions is taxed under the general tax scale (typically 19% to 47%).
Other income, including dividends, interest and capital gains, is taxed under the savings tax scale, which generally applies lower tax rates (19% to 28%).
For expatriates living in Spain, understanding the rules governing tax residence and income tax obligations is essential to ensure compliance and avoid unexpected tax liabilities. “It’s Raining Men” In Moraira
The Entertainers were pleased to support Teulada & Moriara Lions Club with an early season show at the very comfortable La Senieta Moraira recently. With us all settled in our seats The Entertainers were immediately regaling us with their wonderful performance and infectious fun. Not only were we getting variety of songs but each member of the group was offering us their own voice and style. We were all really enjoying ourselves when Jo & Marc gave us the first of their two duets Make You Feel My Love, where Jo gave a tremendous performance of an Adele song, then later in the set they gave us the hauntingly beautiful but sad song, originally from Barbra Streisand, You Don’t Bring Me Flowers - but Marc did (give her flowers), and presented Jo with roses – does this act make it a love song? The Entertainers closed the first set with a wonderfully performed medley from The Phantom of the Opera. Replete with interval drinks, with some people clutching their raffle prizes, we settled down to a second set of faster dance songs. Linda set the early mood with Build Me Up Buttercup, Bob presented Come Up & See Me then Gee excited us with Man I Feel Like a Woman and The Dollies performed Voulez Vous – wow and double wow, something for everyone. When The Entertainers performed It's Raining Men many of the ladies in the audience were dancing in their seats and waving in time with the music – with the forecast for rain, some ladies were hopeful, look out Moraira it may have been raining men last week!!
The Lions Club thanked everyone for supporting the event and The Entertainers for a super show.
A DJ from the UK West Midlands BOOM Radio attended the show and described The Entertainers as “amazing” – praise indeed from someone in the business.

If something seems too good to be true….
Going back a few months, I went to price a project for a client, in the end I didn’t get the project. The client decided to go with an option that was, “considerably cheaper”.
Well, that is the client’s preference, I am not here to bully or cajole people into buying my services and our product. I simply tell them the truth, give them the quote and the rest is up to them. I recently received an email with a picture from said client. Basically, with all the wind we have had in the area the grass had all blown up and can I go and look at going and doing an emergency repair job as they didn’t want the people who laid the grass to come back. I currently don’t have the time to deal with it but they asked if I can still go and have a look at being able to do it at some point in the future, so I agreed.
I knew the work was sub standard just from the pictures, but when I got there, well what a mess. The client had straightened the grass out at least, but the number of mistakes and work that hadn’t been done only clarifies why they were cheaper. We all know that there is cutting corners and then there is just doing nothing right and unfortunately that was the case here. Everything that could have been done wrong or badly had been. I won't list the things, but from prep to install, to even putting a piece of grass the wrong way around (grass has a direction) had been done badly.
Now I will be able to go in and rectify some of the problems, but not all of them without physically replacing some of the grass (which the client won’t want to do), so no matter what I do to repair these errors, it will never be as good as it could have been. It also means it will have probably cost more in the end as the project now isn’t just prep and install, things have to be removed, joins have to be carefully separated, everything has to be taken apart before install can happen again. The bottom line is, as much as this client instantly regretted their choice, it still means they will never have the experience they should have had. So, as the saying goes, if something seems to good to be true, it probably is.
I have said this so many times now, that our prices, being a distributor for our manufacturer and being an experienced company, are competitive, so if you get a price that is cheaper there are only 3 reasons why, inferior grass product, they are not doing the same amount of work (necessary work) and or they are working illegally. The sad matter is that this client has now lost out on a great product and good experience. Don’t become one of those clients, speak to the company that has been doing this for 20 years over hundreds of projects.

The International Choir, a four-part harmony choir based in Teulada, is holding a very different concert in Moraira on 15 May.
Entitled Love and Peace - of which there is all too little in the world at the moment - it will feature popular songs such as Imagine, Seasons of Love (from the musical Rent), Can You Feel the Love and With a Little Help from my Friends.

Canto Mundial are a truly international choir, based in Alfaz del Pí, with members from several different nations. ANGLICAN EASTER PREPARATION
On Shrove Tuesday, Alfaz Church of England had a Pancake Party, the local Councillors popped along from the Town Hall. Preparation was all complete, ready for our members and friends to arrive. The chefs were Fr Paul and Fr Steve with a wonderful variety of pancake toppings both savoury and sweet. This was followed the next day by a special Ash Wednesday Service. We are one of seven Churches of England on the Costa Blanca. Creative Crafters
We are a diverse group of crafters who meet at 10.30am the first Thursday of every month. Our interests range from crochet and dressmaking to metal sculpting. We are a mutual help group, we bring our own work and solve each others crafting problems. We have a special project, 'Project Dress A Girl'. We make new clothes for little girls in the area who would otherwise never have one. Those who sew make them and others raise funds to buy the fabric. They are distributed through local charities. The Calpe and Benissa Lions Annual Fashion Show.
The Calpe and Benissa Lions will be holding their now famous annual Fashion Show, at the wonderful El Toro restaurante, on Friday the 5th of June, at 13.00hrs.
A delicious meal will be followed by an array of elegant outfits suitable for all occasions. All outfits will be on sale on the day, along with a wide selection of fashion clothes and accessories.

Walk Your Way Well

We all know that habits shape our lives, yet changing them can feel dreadfully hard. The reason lies deep in our biology. Every habit produces multiple outcomes across time, and those outcomes are rarely aligned. In plain English please: bad habits tend to feel good right now but cost us later. Good habits often feel uncomfortable in the moment but reward us generously over time.
Our brains evolved in a world very different from the one we live in today. For thousands of generations, humans survived in an environment where immediate action mattered most. Finding food, avoiding danger, seeking shelter were the priority. Planning for retirement, long-term health, or summer holidays months in advance simply wasn’t relevant. As a result, our brains became wired to prioritise instant gratification over distant rewards.
That wiring still drives our behaviour. We overeat because food is pleasurable now, even if it harms us later. We smoke because it reduces stress immediately, despite long-term risks. We drink alcohol because......well, you get the picture! The same mechanism explains why so many people struggle to move their bodies, even though they know exercise improves health, mood, and longevity.
Going for a walk is a perfect example. In the moment, it can feel easier to stay on the sofa, scroll a screen, or tell ourselves we’ll go tomorrow. The immediate reward of rest or distraction often wins. But walking offers something far more powerful: benefits that quietly accumulate over time. Better physical health, improved mental clarity, reduced stress, stronger connection to nature, and a sense of groundedness that no quick fix can replicate.
Habit change isn’t about willpower alone. Willpower is a limited resource. We need to understand our human nature. When we recognize that our resistance is biological, not moral failure, we can meet ourselves with compassion. Each walk, no matter how short, is a small vote for the future version of you. Over time, exercising regularly can change everything.
I work as a habit-change wellness coach (I do what is says on the tin!) and I’d love to support you in becoming the best version of yourself. Adopt a Dog Day - A Heartwarming Family Fun Day
Mark your calendar for Sunday, 5th April, as the much-loved Adopt a Dog Day returns to Moraira Dog Park from 11am to 3pm, promising a wonderful day for animal lovers, families, and the local community.
This special annual event brings together dedicated local animal charities, all working tirelessly to find loving forever homes for dogs in need. Visitors will have the chance to meet a variety of rescue dogs, learn their stories, and perhaps even meet their perfect new companion.
Adopt a Dog Day is not only about adoption. It is a vibrant family day out with something for everyone. Highlights include a lively Dog Parade, where rescue dogs proudly take centre stage, and a fun Dog Show where visitors can enter their own pets into light-hearted categories for a chance to win prizes. There will also be food and drink, plenty of local stalls, and an exciting Easter Egg Hunt to keep younger visitors entertained. Mick Dennison will be playing music throughout the event, Pam's People will be doing a dance demo along with a Local Line Dancing group, great to watch or you could join in! Even those who are not looking to adopt can support the important work of local charities by attending, donating, and helping spread awareness. Every visit makes a difference. Bring your family, bring your friends, and join the community for a memorable and meaningful day dedicated to our fourlegged friends.

This month, our Cancer Care volunteers would like to say a big “Thank you” to our followers and supporters. None of our critical work could happen without you, and the feedback from clients is truly heartwarming.
At the time of going to press Maskeraid are preparing to perform their comedy play ‘A Grimm Night for Hans Christian Andersen’. The group generously donates all proceeds to Cancer Care Jávea, and some of our volunteers are bravely ‘treading the boards’ for the first time. 'How dare she!'
'How dare sheWomen who chose to be different' is the theme of the Art Exhibition at La Senieta, Moraira. The fourth Art Exhibition organised by the European Union of Women Marina Alta will take place from 30 April to 15 May at La Senieta in Moraira. Curator and participating artist Emma Lawton said 'We are presenting work inspired by the theme “How dare she! – Women who chose to be different". You will find many interpretations of this theme in the wide range of sculptures, photographs and paintings. We celebrate those women who pushed the boundaries so that we women of today can benefit. We thank in advance the town Hall of Teulada Moraira for their generosity in enabling us to hold this event'.
The exhibition will open with an evening reception on 30 April at 7pm offering visitors the chance to meet the artists, enjoy cava and light refreshments and preview the collection. The opening will also feature live background music performed by young musicians from the Teulada area.
