If you’re planning games for guests under the age of 5, stay away from games that have clear winners and losers. It’s more important for the kids to have fun. Everyone can be a winner. If opening presents at the party, allow about 45 minutes for opening the presents. Have a large trash bag handy to capture all the wrappings and other garbage. Save time and trouble by writing the child’s name on their party bag ahead of time.

Make Homemade Birthday Party Invitations Stand Out With Creative Ideas
How many times has your little one received the same pre-made birthday invitation that you've seen over and over again? These packs of invitations are usually inexpensive, but also forgettable. With a glance at the invitation do you know if the party is for Sophia, Olivia, Jacob, or Logan? Probably not. While pre-packaged invitations can save time and money, they do not set the party apart from others. There are several ways to make unique invitations with just a little creativity and not much money. Your Child's Own Smile Invitation Sort through your photo files until you find that perfect picture of your child. Use a photo editing program and add a personal message. Then print it off to send to your guests. Choose black and white to save money on printer ink if you wish; it can be quite artsy and unique that way, too. Or print off in sepia tones for a nostalgic look.
Crafty Invitation Depending on how many people you are planning to invite, you might want to entertain the idea of hand-crafted invitations. These don't have to be the upscale cards you see in the scrap-booking and card-making aisles of the craft shop. You can simply spend an afternoon with your child and a pile of cardboard, construction paper, ribbons, glue, scissors, googly eyes, markers, glitter glue, foam sheets, pom poms, stencils, and stickers. Simple cut-outs from old magazines, coloring books, or anything that interests your child will make a great invitation when arranged artfully on a card and put in an envelope. This is not only fun, but it's frugal, too.

Sweet and Salty Popcorn Party Mix Yield: 14 cups 10 cups popped popcorn 2 cups miniature pretzel twists (or another small pretzel shape) 1 cup pecans 1 cup peanuts 2 cups rice, wheat or corn cereal squares 1/2 cup butter (1 stick) 1/2 cup packed brown sugar 1/4 cup corn syrup 1/2 teaspoon baking soda Preheat oven to 300째F. Place popcorn, pretzels, pecans, peanuts and cereal in very large bowl; set aside. Heat butter, brown sugar and corn syrup in medium saucepan. Stir mixture over medium heat until it begins to boil. Boil 3 minutes without stirring. Remove from heat and stir in baking soda (mixture will foam). Pour syrup over popcorn mixture in

Asian Popcorn Medley Yield: 8 cups 6 cups popped popcorn 2 cups Oriental rice cracker mix 3 tablespoons butter or margarine 1 tablespoon soy sauce 1/2-1 teaspoon ground ginger (may vary to taste) 1/4-1/2 teaspoon sesame oil (may vary to taste) Preheat oven to 300째F. Mix popcorn and rice cracker mix together in large bowl. In small microwavesafe bowl, microwave butter on high until melted,
about 20 seconds. Stir in soy sauce, ginger and oil. Drizzle over popcorn mixture; toss. Spread mixture on baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes, stirring once. Allow to cool, serve or store in airtight container. Cinnamon Chocolate Popcorn Yield: 3 quarts 3 quarts popped popcorn Butter-flavored cooking spray 9 tablespoons powdered cocoa mix (cocoa sweetened with sugar or sugar substitute) 3 teaspoons cinnamon Put popcorn in large bowl and lightly spray with cooking spray. Coconut-Ginger Popcorn Truffles Yield: 3 dozen truffles 5 cups air-popped popcorn 2 cups miniature marshmallows 1 tablespoon coconut oil or butter 1/2 cup shredded coconut 3 tablespoons candied ginger, minced Cooking spray 4 ounces semi-sweet chocolate 1 teaspoon coconut oil or butter Place popcorn in large bowl. Place marshmallows and 1 tablespoon coconut oil or butter in medium saucepan over medium-low heat. Stir until melted; remove from heat. Stir in shredded coconut and candied ginger. Mix well. Spray hands with cooking spray, then scoop up 1 tablespoon of popcorn mixture. Roll mixture with hands to form ball. Place ball on baking sheet lined with parchment paper or foil. Repeat to make 36 balls. Place chocolate in small, microwave safe bowl. Heat in microwave on high for one minute, until melted. If not completely melted, microwave for another 15 seconds and stir again. Stir 1 teaspoon coconut oil into melted chocolate. Place chocolate in zipper-style plastic bag and seal. Snip off tiny corner of bag. Pipe chocolate on popcorn balls in decorative pattern. Garnish with extra shredded coconut and extra minced candied ginger, if desired. 7 Ideas for Valentine’s Day Fun BY MICHELLE SHIRK While Valentine’s Day is typically billed as a romantic holiday, it can also be a great time to show friends, family members or even complete strangers how much you care about them. Below, you’ll find seven tips to help your family celebrate this month. 1. Read seasonal books. There are many excellent children’s books that are particularly appropriate for February. Eve Bunting’s sweet tale “The Valentine Bears” is my personal favorite Valentine’s Day-specific pick, but “The I Love You Book” by Todd Parr and “Love is You & Me” by Monica Sheehan also fit nicely into a discussion of love and caring. Need more ideas? Check your local bookstore or library for a display of themed reads. 2. Start making. Kids love creating handmade valentines, and friends and family members love receiving them. Stock up on red and white construction paper, tissue paper, stickers, foam shapes, glitter pens and more for seasonal crafting fun. Don’t worry - if you’re not the crafty type, you can pick up some cute DIY card kits at www.orientaltrading.com. Start cardmaking in January to ensure you’ll have time to mail the finished creations to out-of-town recipients. 3. Find time for some baking. If the house feels bare after the holiday decorations are gone, put up a few simple Valentine’s Day decorations. Hang a garland of paper hearts on the mantle, or fill your Christmas card holder with the valentines family members receive. If you’d rather go the store-bought route, you can find a wide variety of Valentine’s Day window clings for sale at Amazon.com. 6. Schedule a date night (but not on February 14th!). Be sure to spend a little time with your significant other this month. Book your favorite babysitter and plan a night out on February 11th, 12th, 13th or 15th – any time except Valentine’s Day itself, when crowds and
inflated prices make dining out downright unromantic. If you must go out on the 14th, consider opting for a slightly offbeat date destination like a museum, bookstore or arcade.

Community cares Black Ties and French Fries in Wonderland: The Center for Child Counseling’s 2nd Annual Benefit to Support Young Children Impacted by Trauma and Abuse development, focusing on promoting healthy functioning in the earliest years of life, which decreases an array of problems later in life. On February 21, 2015, the Center for Child Counseling will host their 2nd Annual Black Ties and French Fries fundraiser at PGA National Resort and Spa in Palm Beach Gardens to support babies and young children in Palm Beach County who have experienced trauma, violence, abuse and other risk factors that impact healthy development. Unfortunately, acts of violence and abuse toward young children in our community and around the nation are prevalent in the news and highlight the critical need for prevention and early intervention efforts. In fact, children under the age of 5 are placed in foster care at a faster rate than any other age group. “Violence and trauma during the early developmental stages makes changes in the brain,” states Renée Layman, the Center for Child Counseling’s Chief Executive Officer. “Through research, we now know that these early experiences change the brain architecture, impacting health and learning in childhood and throughout the lifespan.” Over the past fifteen years, the Center for Child Counseling has developed expertise and programs grounded in research about early brain

Research shows that not all stress is bad, and can even be positive for growth. However, babies and very young children who experience ‘toxic’ stress (the persistent exposure to abuse, violence or other types of trauma) in early childhood are much more likely to develop a lifetime of greater susceptibility to stressrelated physical illnesses (such as heart disease, hypertension, and diabetes) and mental health problems (such as depression, anxiety disorders, and substance abuse). The Center for Child Counseling addresses problems early in their course, before they become life altering. Board Chair, Bill Lynch, an engineer in private practice brings personal experience as a father and grandfather to his role at the Center for Child Counseling. “I was drawn to the mission of the Center for Child Counseling because of my experience and desire to make a difference in our community,” states Mr. Lynch. “We are helping the most vulnerable children in our community, while providing caregivers with positive skills to promote healthy development. At the Center for Child Counseling, we believe that the health of
our community lies in the health of our children.” Proceeds from Black Ties and French Fries in Wonderland will be used to support the Center for Child Counseling’s prevention and early intervention efforts in local childcare centers in atrisk neighborhoods. “Early Childhood Mental Health is our expertise and the foundation of our mission. We know that this period of life provides the foundation for physical and emotional health throughout the lifespan,” says Ms. Layman. “This fun event for the entire family will support a critical cause while engaging children in giving back to vulnerable children in our community.” The Center for Child Counseling, Inc. is a nonprofit organization serving Palm Beach County since 1999. Food Allergies Can Cause Nutrition Gaps
The first mission in creating safe meals for children with food allergies is avoiding the offending ingredient. But there can be a downside to diets that miss out on the nutritional value found in foods kicked off the menu, according to Carolyn O’Neil, a registered dietitian and nutrition advisor to Best Food Facts. A study in The Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (JAND) cautions that such diets can induce vitamin and mineral deficiencies, anemia and other symptoms affecting a child’s growth and nutritional status. “Food allergies and intolerances are on the rise,” said registered dietitian Vandana Sheth, spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. “But it’s important that we identify that kids are actually allergic (through proper testing) before we avoid those foods unnecessarily.” Common food allergies The eight foods that account for more than 90 percent of childhood cases of food allergies include milk, eggs, soy, peanuts, tree nuts (such as walnuts, almonds, pecans), wheat, fish and shellfish. Food intolerances such as lactose and gluten

I Love My Friend but I Don’t Like Her Kids: Five Ways to Cope BY DR. SHERRIE CAMPBELL
Isn’t that the worst thing when you have a friend you adore but you don’t like her kids? No doubt this puts a strain and wedge in the relationship. You have to decide when and how to spend time with her. It isn’t always easy loving other people’s children, but there are truly some children that are difficult to like and the reality is that it comes down to the parenting. Children are a reflection of the parenting, time, love, and attention they are receiving from home. We all have stories to tell and to share and to keep secret. So, here are five ways to cope if you have a friend you love with kids you don’t: 1. Don’t spend time with her if her kids are around: The easiest solution is to not spend time around your friend if her children are present. Ask to go out to girl’s lunches, girl’s nights, an exercise class or an adult movie. This way, you get the benefit of seeing your friend without having to spend time with her kids. 2. Avoid playdates between your children/child and hers: the situation is even more challenging if you have a child in an age range where there can be playdates. It is very likely that if you do not enjoy her children that your children will complain to you they also do not enjoy time with them. It is your responsibility to take care of your children

in this situation while also maintaining your friendship. Distract her with trying to plan adult time instead of playdate time with the kids. 3. Discuss parenting techniques which have worked with your kids: Being a parent is no small job. It is the toughest job out there. One great way to enhance your friendship with your friend and possibly help her with her children is to talk about parenting skills which have been life-savers for you. Usually parents know when their kids are out of hand and even annoying, so if you bring these things up casually you may find they are helpful to your friend who just may not be a natural when it comes to parenting. 4. Put distance in the friendship: When someone clearly is not parenting their children to be respectful, polite and decent human beings it can change the respect you have for your friend. If it becomes the case that there is too much tension around her children and your opinion of her has deeply affected your ability to see her the way you used to before children, this may need to be a friendship that you back away from. 5. Be honest with her: If things are tense and your avoidance tactics are not working, gently express your thoughts and emotions with her in a way that isn’t too cutting to her children but
rather simple and truthful like: “I love our adult time together and want to continue to nurture that but I have a hard time being around your children as do my children as it seems they have not yet learned to respect other people’s boundaries which I am sure you are working on.” In this way, you are stating your need and also letting her know that her children are emotionally out of control which is hard for you and your children to be around. The apple usually doesn’t fall from the tree. Parents whose children are not disciplined tend to come from parents who have a hard time disciplining themselves. But give your friend the benefit of the doubt and see if there are any tips you can gently put out there than could help. If she seems oblivious then limit your time with your friend to “adult time” only.
