April Showers? No Problem! 10 Rainy Day Activities

That'll Keep Your Kids Entertained

Spring (and Summer too) in South Florida means afternoon storms that roll in fast and leave your kids staring at you like you're the activities director on a cruise ship. Before you hand over the iPad in defeat, try some of these rainy day wins. Some you can pull off right in your living room, and others are the perfect excuse to get out of the house and explore what Palm Beach County has to offer, rain or shine.

1. Build an indoor obstacle course. Couch cushions, pool noodles, masking tape on the floor. Set a timer and let them race through it. Bonus points if you make them carry a stuffed animal through the whole thing. Change up the course every round and let the kids take turns designing it. You will be amazed at what they come up with when they are in charge.

2. Take them to the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium. Rainy days and science museums are a perfect match. The South Florida Science Center and Aquarium in West Palm Beach has interactive exhibits, an aquarium, that keeps kids engaged for hours. It is one of those places where they are learning without realizing it, which is the best kind of outing. Check their calendar for

special programming and camps throughout the spring and summer.

3. Host a living room dance party. Pull up a kid-friendly playlist, push back the furniture, and let them go wild. Freeze dance is always a crowd pleaser and burns serious energy. Add a limbo stick (a broom works great) and a judging panel of stuffed animals and you have yourself a full-blown competition.

4. Get creative at Artnest Studios. If your kids love to paint, sculpt, or get their hands messy, Artnest Studios is a fantastic local option for guided art projects in a fun, relaxed environment. It is a great rainy day plan B that gets them out of the house and into something creative. Check out their class schedule and drop-in options for all ages.

5. Try a science experiment at home. Baking soda volcanoes never get old. Neither does making slime, growing crystals, or the classic Mentos-in-soda explosion (take that one to the garage). Look up simple kitchen science experiments online and let your kids pick one. The

messier, the better. Lay down a tablecloth and let them go for it.

6. Lace up and hit PB Skate Zone. Rain does not stop the fun at PB Skate Zone. Ice skating is a full-body workout disguised as a party, and kids of all ages love it. They offer open skate sessions, and it is the kind of activity that wears them out in the best way. Pack some socks and let them roll.

7. Start a puzzle marathon. Pick one that is a stretch for their age level and work on it together. Leave it out on the dining table and come back to it all week. Make it a family challenge and see if you can finish it before the rainy stretch ends. Puzzles build patience, problem-solving skills, and give everyone something to rally around.

8. Explore ocean life at the Sandoway Discovery Center. Located right in Delray Beach, the Sandoway Discovery Center is a hidden gem for families. Kids can see live sharks, touch stingrays, and learn about the marine ecosystems

right in our backyard. It is small enough that it does not overwhelm little ones but interesting enough to keep older kids engaged. Their daily shark feedings are always a hit.

9. Have a family cooking session. Let the kids pick a recipe, measure ingredients, and get their hands messy. Simple things like homemade pizza, smoothie bowls, or no-bake cookies work great for little helpers. Give each kid a job and let them own it. Cooking together teaches math, following directions, and teamwork, and you end up with a snack at the end.

10. Visit the Loggerhead Marinelife Center. Over in Juno Beach, the Loggerhead Marinelife Center is a free admission (donation suggested) destination that the whole family will love. Kids get to see sea turtles up close, learn about ocean conservation, and explore interactive exhibits. It is educational, inspiring, and a great way to spend a rainy afternoon. Check their schedule for guided tours and special events.

Tues - Fri: 12pm-4pm

Sat: 10am-4pm Sun: 12pm-4pm

11. Create a blanket fort and have a movie marathon. Sheets, chairs, string lights, and a stack of pillows. Let them "camp" in the living room and pick the movies. Add popcorn and sleeping bags and you have a full indoor camping experience that might just become a weekly tradition.

12. Play classic board games or card games. Uno, Candy Land, Sorry, or Jenga. Old school? Yes. Still fun? Every single time. If your kids are a little older, introduce them to strategy games like Clue or Ticket to Ride. Game nights do not have to wait for the weekend.

13. Write and perform a family play. Give everyone 15 minutes to come up with a character, grab costumes from the dress-up bin (or your closet), and put on a show. Record it for the grandparents. Let the kids write the script, design the set, and handle the "marketing" (a hand-drawn poster on the fridge). The production value will be questionable. The memories will be priceless.

14. Keep an eye on the Schoolhouse Children's Museum. The Schoolhouse Children's Museum in Boynton Beach is currently closed for renovations, but this is one to watch. Keep an eye out for their reopening date, because it has always been a goto rainy day destination for Palm Beach County families. Follow them on social media so you are first to know when they are back.

15. Start a rainy day journal. Give each kid a notebook and let them draw, write stories, paste in photos, or just doodle. It becomes a keepsake they can look back on and a creative outlet they can return to every time the skies open up. Date each entry and by the end of the summer you will have a record of every rainy adventure.

The best rainy days are the ones where your kids forget it was even raining. A little planning, a few local favorites in your back pocket, and a lot of flexibility go a long way. Palm Beach County has no shortage of places to explore and things to do, storm clouds and all.

Keeping the Peace: Tips for Navigating Sibling Rivalry Like a Pro

If your house sounds like a courtroom most days ("She touched my stuff!" "He's looking at me!"), welcome to the club. Sibling rivalry is one of the most universal and exhausting parts of parenting. It can make a perfectly good Saturday morning feel like you are mediating a corporate merger between two people who cannot agree on which cereal to pour. The good news? It is completely normal, and there are real strategies that help.

1. Resist the urge to play judge. When you step in and assign blame, one kid always feels like the favorite. Instead of deciding who started it, focus on the solution. "How can you two work this out?" puts the responsibility back on them and teaches problem-solving instead of finger-pointing. You will be surprised how often they come up with a fair resolution on their own when they know you are not going to hand down a verdict.

2. Acknowledge each kid's feelings first. Before you problem-solve, validate. "I can see you're really frustrated" goes further than "Stop fighting right now." Kids who feel heard are less likely to escalate. This does not mean you are agreeing with their

behavior. It means you are letting them know their emotions are real and that you see them. That alone can take the temperature down.

3. Avoid comparisons like the plague. "Why can't you be more like your sister?" is a sentence that plants resentment and grows it for years. Every child is wired differently. Celebrate each one for who they are individually, what they are good at, and what makes them unique. When kids feel valued for being themselves, they spend less energy competing with their sibling for approval.

4. Create one-on-one time with each child. A lot of sibling conflict comes from competing for your attention. Even 15 minutes of dedicated, distraction-free time with each kid can lower the temperature in your house significantly. Let each child pick the activity. It does not have to be elaborate. A walk around the block, a card game, or just sitting together talking about their day goes a long way. When kids feel secure in their individual relationship with you, they have less reason to fight for the spotlight.

5. Set clear household rules together. Let the kids help create family rules around sharing, personal space, and how to handle disagreements. When kids have a voice in the rules, they are more likely to follow them. Write the rules down together and post them somewhere visible. When a conflict comes up, you can point to the list instead of repeating yourself for the thousandth time.

6. Teach conflict resolution skills early. Roleplay scenarios at a calm moment. Practice "I feel ___ when you ___" statements. It feels silly at first, but kids start using the language on their own over time. Give them a simple framework: say how you feel, say what happened, and say what you need. Even a five-year-old can learn to say "I feel mad when you take my toy. I need you to ask first."

7. Give them space to be apart. Not every moment has to be together. Siblings need room to breathe, have their own friends, and pursue their own interests without their brother or

and to book your party: Visit schoolhousemuseum.org or call 561-742-6780.

sister tagging along. Especially in a household where kids share a room or spend a lot of time together, intentional alone time is not a luxury. It is a necessity. Let them have their own corners of the house, own activities, and their own friendships.

8. Praise cooperation when you see it. Catch them being kind to each other and call it out. "I love how you shared that with your brother" or "That was really cool how you helped your sister with that" reinforces the behavior you want to see more of. Kids respond to positive attention. If the only time they get a big reaction from you is when they are fighting, they will keep fighting. Flip the script and make the good moments get noticed.

9. Do not force apologies. A grudging "sorry" teaches kids nothing except how to say words they do not mean. Instead, encourage them to make amends in a way that feels real: drawing a picture, offering a turn, helping fix something they broke, or simply saying "I didn't mean to hurt your feelings." The goal is empathy, not performance.

When kids learn to genuinely consider how their actions affect someone else, apologies start happening naturally.

10. Watch for triggers and patterns. Pay attention to when the fighting tends to happen. Is it right before dinner when everyone is hungry and tired? Is it always about the same toy or the same seat in the car? Once you start noticing patterns, you can get ahead of them. Hungry kids fight more. Bored kids fight more. Overtired kids fight more. Sometimes the solution is not a conversation about feelings. It is a snack.

11. Let them work it out sometimes. Not every squabble needs a parent stepping in. If it is lowstakes (arguing about whose turn it is to pick the show, debating who saw the lizard first), give them a minute to figure it out. Hovering over every disagreement sends the message that they cannot handle conflict without you. Step in when things get physical, when someone is being ganged up on, or when emotions are escalating beyond what

they can manage. Otherwise, let them practice.

12. Avoid labeling your kids. "She's the smart one." "He's the athletic one." Even when the labels seem positive, they box kids into roles and set siblings up to compete. The "smart" kid feels pressure to always perform. The other kid hears that intelligence belongs to their sibling, not them. Let your kids be multidimensional. They are all smart, all creative, all capable of surprising you.

13. Make teamwork part of your family culture. Give siblings tasks they have to do together. Cooking a meal, working on a puzzle, planning a surprise for a family member. When kids experience the payoff of collaboration, it shifts the dynamic from rivalry to partnership. Even something as simple as "You two are in charge of setting up movie night" gives them a shared mission.

14. Be honest about your own sibling experiences. If you grew up with brothers or sisters, share your own stories. Kids love hearing

that their parents went through the same thing. Tell them about the fights, the making up, and how your sibling relationship changed as you got older. It normalizes what they are going through and gives them hope that it gets better.

15. Remember: some conflict is actually healthy. Siblings are practicing how to negotiate, compromise, stand up for themselves, and recover from disagreements in the safest possible environment. Your job is not to eliminate the fighting. It is to help them learn how to fight fair, how to listen, and how to come back together after things get heated. Those skills will follow them into friendships, workplaces, and relationships.

The sibling relationship is often the longest one your children will have. Longer than friendships, longer than their relationship with you. The skills they build now, will serve them for a lifetime. So take a deep breath, hide in the bathroom for a minute if you need to, and know that you are doing just fine.

DAY CAMP CHECKLIST

• Hand sanitizer and disinfecting wipes

• Sunscreen with an SPF rating of at least 45. Pro tip: Apply sunscreen before leaving home - send a bottle for reapplication pack a hat/ sunglasses

• Insect repellant wipes and/or insect repellent wristband (do not send an aerosol can of insect repellant–the spray will sting if it gets in your child’s eyes.)

• Bathing suit and towel

• Bring two water bottles one that is frozen to enjoy later as it melts.

• Comfortable running shoes or closed-toe sports sandals WITH socks

• Extra set of clothes (especially a pair of socks and shirt if they get wet from the rain)

• Rain poncho (rolls up small)

• Medication: All camps should have your child’s medical information on file. Having an extra note with details in their backpack and attached to their Prescription medication and/or Epi-Pen is helpful.

• Food: Some day camps will provide lunch and snacks. If you pack a lunch it should be easy to eat on the ground. A sandwich (avoid peanut butter since most camps are nut-free), fruit and a juice box or water makes for a healthy lunch. Granola bars make an excellent snack.

Some camps may have snack bars or vending machines. Notify the camp of any food allergies your child may have.

• Do not bring valuable items like electronics.

If mornings in your house sometimes sound like this: drawers opening, clothes tossed on the floor, and a frustrated child declaring they have “nothing to wear”, the problem may not be your child. It may be the closet.

Even in South Florida, where shorts and T-shirts are worn year-round, kids’ clothing piles up faster than most parents realize. Many local children spend most of the school year in uniforms, so closets often hold a mix of uniforms, everyday clothing, and play clothes in various sizes. By spring, it’s a great time for a closet reset: removing what no longer fits, preparing for summer activities, and organizing clothing so children can access what they need independently. A focused 15–20 minute refresh can make a noticeable difference.

Start with a Quick Sweep - Begin with a simple question: Will this actually be worn? Remove anything that no longer fits and pull out worn-out or stained items. Check for multiple sizes mixed together and set aside anything your child rarely chooses. For families with school uniforms, now is also a good time to assess which uniforms will still fit next year and decide whether to store them or donate them. This step immediately reduces clutter and gives the closet a sense of order.

Check Everyday Basics - Next, make sure essentials are ready for daily use. Confirm that shorts, T-shirts, and lightweight tops fit comfortably. Include swimwear or water-play clothes and comfortable sleepwear. Shoes should be in good condition and fit for everyday activities. For school uniforms, check if your child will need larger sizes for the next school year or if new pieces are needed to supplement what they already have. Counting easy outfits for busy mornings now can prevent scrambling later.

Make the Closet Kid-Friendly - A closet that works for children makes getting dressed easier for everyone. Place frequently worn items within reach, and organize by simple categories: Shorts, T-shirts, Pajamas, Swimwear, and, for those in uniform, a separate section for uniform tops, bottoms, and accessories. Open bins or baskets help children see their options at a glance, and labels can assist younger kids in staying organized. Older children can help decide which items to keep, encouraging independence and decision-making.

Create a Grab-and-Go Zone- Designate a small area for outfits needed regularly, whether for play, school, or summer activities. Keep swimwear together in one bin, and consider a basket for

hats, flip-flops, or sunglasses. For uniformed kids, you might store next year’s uniforms in a separate container or section to free up space in the main closet. A designated spot for setting out tomorrow’s outfit saves time and helps establish a consistent routine.

Practice the “One In, One Out” Habit - When new clothing comes into the home, involve your child in choosing an item to donate. This helps them learn to value what they have and makes letting go a positive experience. Keep a small donation bag handy in or near the closet for easy access.

A Small Reset with Big Benefits - The goal of a closet reset isn’t perfection; it’s creating a space where kids can see and reach their clothing, make choices, and put things away on their own. To make the process even easier, I’ve created a Kids’ Closet

Reset Checklist that walks families through these steps quickly and efficiently. Even a short refresh can save parents time, reduce morning stress, and empower kids to manage their own belongings. A little attention to the closet now pays off every day, smoother mornings, less frustration, and children who feel confident managing both their everyday clothes and uniforms. XOXO, Amy
