Fraser Coast Regional Council acknowledges to the east, the Butchulla (Badtjala) and to the west, the Kabi Kabi (Gubbi Gubbi) People, their connection to Country (land, sea and sky) and recognise the many places of cultural, spiritual, social and economic signiļ¬cance in the community. We pay respects to their Elders ā past, present and emerging. We also acknowledge other First Nation Aboriginals and the Torres Strait Islander people, who reside in the Fraser Coast region.

It all started with a dollar. Twenty-ļ¬ve years ago, Brad Turner made an impulse purchase at a bargain-bin store ā a Frank Sinatra CD that ignited a lifelong love aļ¬air with swing and jazz. That little disc didnāt just change his musical taste; it paved the way for something quite unexpected later in life.
āI had no idea that little disc would send me spiraling into a full-blown obsession with swing and jazz,ā Turner laughs, describing how he quickly amassed a mountain of CDs featuring Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Dean Martin, Duke Ellington, and Ella Fitzgerald. āI couldnāt just listen to them. Oh no. I had to become them.ā
That obsession with swing and jazz has now evolved into something rather more sophisticated. Scaramouche, a six-piece swing ensemble formed in 2024, transports audiences back to the golden age of swing.
The bandās genesis came through lead singer Turnerās other project, Fools Errand, an 80s pop nostalgia group that began sneaking jazzier tunes into their sets. āThatās when the lightbulb ļ¬ickered on: āWhat if I started a new
project focused entirely on swing and jazz?āā, Turner recalls.
Recruiting fellow musicians proved surprisingly easy, though Turner is modest about his own abilities. āI quickly realized I was the musical weak link,ā he laughs. āPlaying swing and jazz on guitar felt like trying to cook a souļ¬ lĆ© when youāve only ever made toast.ā
The missing piece came when Turner approached Maddison to handle female vocals. āIāve known her for years and have always said she has the prettiest voice Iāve ever heard,ā he shares.
The ensemble brings together Turner on guitar and vocals, Sam Maddison on vocals, Kyle Downes on keys, John Murphy on drums, and Warren Shaw on saxophone.
See Scaramouche in Morning Melodies atĀ the Brolga on 21 August.
