Why Scholarships are Important
Yes, you have many options to cover the costs of college, but keep in mind that scholarships are FREE MONEY and there’s more than one reason why they are an important way to help pay for college: 1) It costs more to go to college now than when your parents went! Tuition and the cost of college living have increased an average of 5% annually since 2000 according to a College Board report. However, nowadays there are more scholarships available than there used to be. 2) Your parents can’t do it on their own, they need your help. The best help you can give your parents is working hard in school and applying for scholarships! 3) There are more costs than just tuition and books! Remember, unless you are living at home, you still have to pay for a dorm, food, supplies, utilities and other miscellaneous bills while you are off at school. Bottom line: Yes, college is expensive, but you do have options and scholarships are a great one!

Paying For College: Scholarships Scholarships! Scholarships! Scholarships! There is nothing better than FREE MONEY, right? Scholarships are everywhere, you just have to ask, apply and stand out. Keep in mind that there is no limit to the number of scholarships you apply for and are awarded.
ASK
School guidance counselors are usually the best place to start as they generally keep a list of local scholarships and how to apply. Use additional resources like your and your parents employers or online tools like fastweb.com for national scholarships. Also, don’t forget that every college and university offers in-house scholarships that incoming students can apply for.
APPLY Take the time to apply and complete the FULL
application. Yes, some of these applications require more than just a 250 word essay and your resume. Spend time working on the application and have an adult review it to make sure you didn’t miss any important pieces.
STAND OUT Most scholarships require some sort
of essay and/or questionnaire for you (the soon to be college student) to complete. Think about who your audience is, are they more interested in your extra curricular activities and community involvement or the hardships you faced to achieve your goals. Remember your path is unique, so make it personal and tell your story with passion.
