Welcome to this issue of Travel & Cruise, and for many of you, welcome back from sunny San Juan, Puerto Rico and the cruise industry’s premier event in the Caribbean, the FCCA Cruise Conference & Trade Show. All readers are likely aware that cruising reached new records this year – and is en route for an even brighter future through not only groundbreaking investments in both cruise ships and destinations, but Cruise industry leaders at La Fortaleza, the official residence arguably more importantly, because of Puerto Rico Governor Jennifer González-Colón, marking of strengthened partnerships along the opening of the 31st FCCA Cruise Conference & Trade Show. From left: Michele Paige; Governor González-Colón; with constant communication and Michael Bayley, Royal Caribbean; Christine Duffy, Carnival collaboration between destination Cruise Line; Adam Ceserano, FCCA; Chris Ivy, Margaritaville stakeholders and cruise lines. at Sea; and Joe Schott, Disney Cruise Line. This was on full display in Puerto Rico during the high-level discussions, productive one-on-one meetings, and renewed commitment to advancing the cruise industry through collaboration, innovation, and sustainable development – or, as Governor Jenniffer González-Colón said: “What this conference highlighted for us all is that the cruise industry is constantly moving forward. It grows through ongoing dialogue, shared ideas, and a deep understanding of what guests truly value.” You can read all about what happened at the Conference itself and how Puerto Rico is an example of that progress and “not just welcoming ships – we are building the future of Caribbean cruising,” according to Puerto Rico Tourism Company Executive Director Willianette Robles. This issue will show plenty other examples of that evolution and innovation, including how the British Virgin Islands is transforming the future together – from a year-long celebration honoring 35 years of service for the BVI Ports Authority to new partnerships and iconic annual festivals. Some of FCCA’s other strategic partners also get the spotlight, from St. Maarten’s meteoric growth and the Dominican Republic’s impressive initiatives, to holiday festivities from the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico – and our own annual undertaking to bring that cheer to deserving children throughout the Caribbean and Latin America, the FCCA Foundation’s Holiday Gift Project, is featured as well. Of course, our cruise line partners again fill the pages, from the more than 100 cruise executives at the Conference (including the full keynote speech by Carnival Corporation CEO Josh Weinstein), to executive spotlights on Vicky Rey, Vice President, Government Affairs, Latin America, Carnival Corporation & plc, and Wendy A. McDonald, Regional Vice President of Government Relations, Caribbean, Royal Caribbean Group, who share their histories and glimpses of the future. We hope to build a better future together with you at one of our upcoming events, and our next one is right around the corner. Our annual exclusive Platinum Member event, the FCCA PAMAC Cruise Summit, will set sail on Carnival Glory from January 5-9, 2026, and serve as another forum for the collaborations, innovations, and shared commitment that continue to drive the region forward. The past year demonstrated the power of this industry when we move with shared purpose. Every region, port, and partner contributed to progress that positions us well for the year ahead. Our industry thrives when cruise lines, ports, destinations, and the wider maritime ecosystem work together. Priorities including decarbonization, destination stewardship, and long-term economic growth rely on collaboration that delivers measurable results. Over the past few months, we further strengthened coordination across multiple fronts. CLIA formalized partnerships with the UK Chamber of Shipping and the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH), reinforcing our commitment to global dialogue and joint action. Additionally, engagement with key ports and destinations and at multiple events further advanced our work. In September, during the CLIA Ports and Destinations Dialogue and Seatrade Europe, we released the industry’s annual Environmental Technologies and Practices Report showing measurable progress by CLIA-member lines as they advance an ambitious environmental agenda—from piloting biofuels, to investing in fuel-flexible engines, to increasing the uptake of lower emissions fuels, and maximizing energy-efficiency measures. In November, CLIA convened the industry for Cruise Forward Summit 2025, bringing together cruise line leaders, members, partners, and other innovators shaping cruising’s future. Across the conference tracks, panelists outlined strategies for responsible growth. I hosted a fireside chat with Geoff Freeman, president and CEO of U.S. Travel Association, discussing travel trends, cross-sector collaboration, and cruising’s role in expanding economic opportunity—valuable insights on our path to 40 million passengers by 2027. During my recent visits to Alaska, the United Kingdom, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, and Brazil, conversations centered on the industry’s progress in environmental technologies and practices, the need for infrastructure development, and the importance of regulatory clarity. I also had the honor of delivering the opening keynote at Interferry’s annual conference in Sorrento, exploring opportunities to strengthen community engagement. On the regulatory front, CLIA contributed to the IMO’s 20th Intersessional Working Group on GHG Reduction in London, advancing work on fuel certification, zero and near-zero fuels, compliance, reporting, lifecycle analysis, and the Fifth IMO GHG Study—helping shape a global framework that aligns environmental ambition with operational practicality. While the IMO will reconvene in October 2026 to address these important decisions, the cruise industry’s decarbonization work to pursue net zero emissions by 2050 continues regardless of IMO timing or outcomes. Our members are leading the way in this regard, through their investments, planning, and technology deployment. This year reaffirmed that collaboration across regions and the wider maritime community is essential to driving lasting progress. I am proud to represent this industry at a pivotal moment, moving forward with strong partnerships, clear priorities, and a shared commitment to strengthening cruising’s future. Together, we will continue building an industry whose best days are still ahead. We Are Cruise,

The initiative also benefits the environment, reducing Royal Caribbean’s carbon footprint and promoting sustainability within the communities they visit. “This initiative is a great example of how working together with FCCA can lead to mutually beneficial outcomes for both the cruise industry and local communities,” McDonald said. Looking forward, she’s energized by greener practices and smarter tech. “As we look ahead, I believe we will see a greater emphasis on environmentally responsible practices, which are crucial for preserving the beautiful destinations we visit. The integration of advanced technologies will also enhance the guest experience, making cruises more personalized and accessible than ever before.” For McDonald, FCCA membership is the industry’s connective tissue. “The most valuable benefit FCCA members receive from being part of this community is the opportunity for collaboration and networking with industry leaders, stakeholders and local governments. This strong sense of community fosters partnerships that can lead to innovative solutions and shared best practices, ultimately enhancing the cruise experience for guests while supporting the economic

growth of Caribbean destinations.” McDonald advises new members to reap all the benefits of FCCA membership. “Attend meetings, participate in workshops, and connect with other members to build relationships and share insights. Don’t hesitate to leverage the resources and support provided by FCCA to address challenges and identify new opportunities in your respective markets.” With a career built on connection and a perspective rooted in regional development, McDonald remains focused on what makes the Caribbean cruise story unique: “The industry’s resilience and adaptability in the face of challenges inspire me. As we navigate the evolving landscape of travel, I am excited about the opportunities for collaboration with local stakeholders, governments and communities to create memorable experiences that benefit everyone involved.”

At the time, Carnival had three ships: the original Mardi Gras, Carnivale and Festivale. It was so much fun that when six months later I was asked to apply for a reservations agent position, it was an easy ‘yes!’. Fortyfour years later, it is still one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.” That enthusiasm and commitment have defined her journey ever since. Today, as Vice President of Government Affairs for Latin America at Carnival Corporation & plc, Rey sees both challenges and tremendous opportunities for the region. “There is a wealth of opportunity for destinations in the Caribbean and Latin America. FCCA Cruise Conference in Puerto Rico Calls for Collaboration, Innovation & Sustainable Growth

T

he 31st Annual Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA) Cruise Conference & Trade Show in San Juan, Puerto Rico featured a week of high-level discussions, productive one-onone meetings, and renewed commitment to advancing the cruise industry through collaboration, innovation and sustainable development. Hosted in partnership with the Puerto Rico Tourism Company, the event attracted senior cruise executives, government ministers and directors of tourism, and tourism stakeholders—including FCCA Presidential Partners and Platinum Members from across the Caribbean, Latin America and further afield. At the opening, FCCA Chief Executive Officer Michele Paige reaffirmed the Association’s core mission of partnership and collaboration. Reflecting on the vision of FCCA Chairman Micky Arison, she reminded delegates that destinations can only fully benefit from the economic potential of the cruise industry when they understand it. “That began the foundation of why we get together—to communicate, collaborate (and) be partners,” Paige said. Emphasizing unity, she added that more than 100 cruise executives had assembled for the conference to engage directly with destination stakeholders, answer questions, and help them reach their goals: “We are your partners; we want everyone here to succeed.”

Puerto Rico Tourism Company Executive Director Willianette Robles welcomed delegates to San Juan, “the cruise capital of the Eastern Caribbean,” highlighting a historic milestone as the island expects to receive a record 1.9 million cruise passengers this season. She noted that Puerto Rico is “not just welcoming ships—we are building the future of Caribbean cruising” through major investments in infrastructure, technology and workforce development. Governor Jenniffer González-Colón reaffirmed Puerto Rico’s leadership in Caribbean cruising and its commitment to modernizing port infrastructure across the island. In addition to record passenger arrivals, she highlighted terminal upgrades, and plans to expand cruise activity beyond San Juan—ensuring tourism’s benefits reach other regions on the island. “What this conference highlighted for us all is that the cruise industry is constantly moving forward. ongoing dialogue, shared ideas, and a deep understanding of what guests truly value. To host that conversation here in Puerto Rico—to see it unfold in our meeting halls, in the exchange of ideas that flowed all week, and even within La Fortaleza—was genuinely rewarding. It underscored that staying competitive means staying connected and that hospitality, vision and readiness are essential for continued growth. Puerto Rico embraced that challenge this week, and we look forward to welcoming the industry back next year (October 12-16, 2026)!” stated Governor González-Colón. Delivering the state of the industry address, Josh Weinstein, President and CEO of Carnival Corporation & plc, shared an impressive outlook for the industry, stating, “Nowhere is the appetite for cruise travel and the outlook for growth greater than in the Caribbean and Latin America.” He noted that global cruise demand is booming—with 37.7 million passengers projected this year, surpassing pre-pandemic levels by “a whopping” 27%--and confirmed that the Caribbean and Latin America remain the world’s leading cruise market. “No other region offers such welcoming, diverse, close-to-home, and high value itineraries,” he said. Weinstein emphasized that together, cruise lines and destinations are driving real impact: fueling local economies, supporting communities and small businesses, and creating jobs across the region. The event featured a series of high-impact sessions beginning with the Cruise Industry Masterclass led by Ambra Attus, Director of Impact, Growth & Development of the Aquila Center for Cruise Excellence, who urged delegates to explore the trends transforming global cruising, from evolving guest expectations to sustainability, technology and inclusivity. Attus underscored how the post-pandemic rebound has brought with it a new kind of traveler, one seeking connection, personalization and purpose. “Guests are back but they have a higher

expectation, they have deeper values, they have different expectations, and that brings a little bit of pressure on us—on our operations, on our destinations because we really have to ramp up and update as the trends change,” she stated. The CEO Spotlight and Presidential Panels brought together the leaders of the world’s top cruise brands, including Weinstein of Carnival Corporation & plc, Michael Bayley, President & CEO of Royal Caribbean, Christine Duffy, President of Carnival Cruise Line, Gus Antorcha, President of Princess Cruises, Chris Ivy, CEO of Margaritaville at Sea, and Joe Schott, President of Disney Signature Experiences. The discussion explored new ship classes, destination development, and the evolving relationship between cruise lines and Caribbean partners. Executives emphasized the importance of collaboration, infrastructure investment, and positioning destinations as strong brands, with exclusive destinations serving as models of community integration and innovation. They also highlighted the appeal of premium, destination-rich itineraries shaped through partnerships, and the growing value of authentic, immersive local experiences. Panelists urged regional governments to avoid excessive taxes

Renewed calls were made for a coordinated regional approach to employing Caribbean seafarers, acknowledging the challenges but highlighting success stories emerging through the Caribbean Maritime University. Workshops throughout the week explored diverse themes—from compassionate crisis management and homeporting to destination resilience and digital communications. The Care Team Training, led by Carnival and Royal Caribbean specialists, focused on strengthening crisis response and emotional support across the cruise and hospitality sectors. In “The Rise of Homeporting for the Caribbean,” industry experts from Port St. Maarten, Port Everglades, Maryland Port Administration, Carnival and Royal Caribbean discussed the growing momentum behind homeporting—from infrastructure expansion to new strategic partnerships driving regional cruise growth. During “Charting a New Course: AI Solutions for Cruise & Tour Professionals,” Eric Benedict, Vice President of Training & Development at Access Cruise Inc., delivered an inspiring presentation on

how AI is reshaping the cruise industry— from streamlined operations to smarter guest personalization. Through real-world examples, he showed how technology can empower teams, enhance service delivery, and reimagine destination experiences— all while keeping the vital human touch at the heart of hospitality. Beverly Nicholson-Doty, CEO of Figment Design, delivered a powerful session on “Purpose-Driven Resilience,” exploring how small destinations can build sustainable, people-centered, and crisis-ready tourism strategies. Drawing on real-world examples from her experience working across the Caribbean, she emphasized that true resilience is not a reaction— it’s embedded in every aspect of strategy, relationships and community engagement. “Resilience doesn’t just happen; it’s part of your strategy,” she reminded attendees, urging destinations to plan ahead, empower their people, and make every visitor experience memorable. The final session, “Going Beyond Social Media,” led by Bevan Springer, President and CEO of Marketplace Excellence, offered a masterclass in integrated communications. He and his team unpacked how to build communications plans that combine PR, social media and digital marketing— with clear goals, aligned messaging, and research-backed evaluation. Attendees learned how to drive real business results through smarter storytelling. As the conference closed, one message prevailed: that the strength of the Caribbean cruise industry lies in partnership, purpose and people. Ambra Attus of Aquila summed it up best: “When one of us thrives, the whole industry thrives.” Fo ur th Q ua r te r 2025 | Travel & Cr uise 13

Meeting and Events

Carnival Corporation CEO Josh Weinstein’s Keynote Address Josh Weinstein, President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Carnival Corporation & plc, delivered the keynote ‘State of the Industry Address’ at the FCCA Cruise Conference and Trade Show’s Opening Ceremony in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Setting an optimistic tone for the event and future of cruise tourism, he highlighted record-breaking demand and the Caribbean’s central role in the industry’s growth. A lightly edited transcription of that speech follows.

It’s great to be in San Juan – a city alive with energy and the perfect setting for a conference filled with promise and opportunity. I’m honored to welcome the many distinguished leaders from our destination partners who have joined us this year. Thank you for your valued support and your continued advocacy for cruising. A huge thank you to the government of Puerto Rico and the Puerto Rico Tourism Company—especially Governor Jenniffer González Colón and Willianette Robles Cancel—for their partnership and hospitality. Finally, to everyone who made the journey to be here—thank you. San Juan is one of the Caribbean’s fastest growing and most dynamic cruise destinations, proving the power of smart leadership and strong industry collaboration. And this room is absolutely buzzing with optimism and possibility, which is exactly what makes FCCA such an effective force for progress. I’m eager to see how the conversations we start here turn into real impact for cruising, destinations, and all the people who depend on this industry. We’re here because we believe in the strength of shared ambition—and we know our greatest prospects lie in the potential we have yet to fully tap. That’s what this event is all about. It’s a space where relationships are strengthened, ideas are sharpened, and the future of cruise tourism begins to take shape. And frankly, there’s never been a more important time to act. Demand is booming, and consumer interest in cruising continues to surge. The industry is projected to carry a record-breaking 37.7 million passengers worldwide this year—more than the population of New York…the population of Florida…the population of Texas…and not too far off the combined population of the Caribbean. The volume of passengers 14 Fo ur th Q ua r te r 2025 | Travel & Cr uise

“…absolutely buzzing with optimism and possibility…” this year will surpass pre-pause volumes by a whopping 27%. But most importantly, nowhere is the appetite for cruise travel— and the outlook for growth—greater than in the Caribbean and Latin America. Puerto Rico is a living example of the momentum we’re seeing throughout the region. During the 2023-2024 cruise year, over 1.5 million cruise guests visited, an increase of 10% versus the previous year. It’s certainly easy to understand why. Cruisers are increasingly drawn to the country’s rich culture, stunning coastlines, and natural wonders. And as an industry, we’re responding. For us at Carnival Corporation, our world-class cruise lines will bring over half a million guests to Puerto Rico next year,

through both home port operations and transit calls. Just this month, [thanks to Gus Antorcha – who is here for the first time in his new role as president of our Princess Cruises line] Princess officially returned to San Juan for its first seasonal homeport in more than a decade. And we’re not alone. The entire cruise industry is rising to meet this demand, including new homeport operations from San Juan and massive investments in expanded port infrastructure. This is all laying the groundwork for even more growth in the future. The irresistible blend of culture, beauty, and warmth that draws visitors to San Juan and Puerto Rico more broadly is the same powerful force that makes the entire region the premier cruise destination in the world. It’s no wonder the Caribbean and Latin America have been—and continue to be— the leading global cruise market. No other region offers such welcoming, diverse, closeto-home, and high-value itineraries.

While it’s exciting enough to be at the top, the real story is how that success translates into tangible benefits for the families and businesses in the local communities. Among the destinations we visit, the combined impact of a single cruise ship visit is significant. Each passenger spends over $100 on average in local shops, restaurants, tours and more. Plus, every time a crew member steps ashore, he or she spends an average of almost $60 per person in additional funds that directly support local livelihoods. Collectively, this adds up quickly. During the 2023-2024 cruise year, cruise tourism generated almost $4.2 billion in direct spending across the region. That’s real money supporting over 94,000 local jobs and $1.27 billion in real wages. These numbers confirm what we already know—cruising is a catalyst for economic growth. Our destination engagements reflect that by focusing on mutual success and long-term, shared prosperity. Together we find the best ways to leverage cruise tourism for good: fueling local economies, lifting up communities, supporting small businesses, and creating lasting impact for every port we visit. And the best part? We’re just getting started. With global passenger projections soaring to 42 million by 2028, the cruise industry is on a rapid upward trajectory. FCCA Member Lines are meeting that demand with a growing fleet of futureready ships. Cruise ship order books are filled with new, cutting-edge vessels that are pushing boundaries—offering more

space, more luxury, and more ways to experience the world. While we grow, we do so with intention. As an industry, we continue to advance efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. For example, in 2025 Carnival Corporation is 10% bigger in capacity than 2019, and yet we will emit 10% less greenhouse gases in absolute terms this year. My cruise line colleagues could give similar read outs of their commitment to protecting the world we live in. And we’re also working hand-in-hand with each of you—our destination partners—to ensure our growth is managed, meaningful, and protective of the very things that make your home countries so magnificent for visitors and residents alike. All these signs point to an extraordinarily bright future for cruising across the Caribbean and Latin America—a future full of opportunity, and our partnerships are the key to unlocking it. By continuing to collaborate with purpose, we can ensure that our growth is inclusive, respectful, well-managed and rooted in long-term benefit for everyone it touches. deep strategic relationships that are models for us all. Please join me in recognizing the destinations that have stepped up as FCCA Presidential Partners—the British Virgin Islands, the Dominican Republic, St. Maarten, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico, our incredible host. These destinations have moved decisively to capture the full promise of cruise tourism, which is what FCCA and this event are all about: tapping into the full value of what cruise tourism can bring to your communities. As we look ahead, we can see that opportunity is everywhere. But only our ability to work together will determine how far we go. As we move into the rest of the conference, let’s use this time to lay the foundation for long-term collective growth that is not just possible—but inevitable. Of course, it’s not just about opportunities. Challenges exist today like they always have—maybe even more so based on socioeconomic, regulatory, geopolitical and climate issues. But the cruise industry and destinations alike need to tackle these head on with transparency, mutual respect, and innovation. Whether it’s through new ideas, stronger alliances, or fresh approaches to old challenges, this is our chance to move the needle. I hope you leave this conference inspired, energized, and ready to keep building—and that the collaborative work we start today brings us shared prosperity in the years ahead. Thank you.

Carnival Corporation Showcases Industry Leadership at FCCA Conference

C

arnival Corporation played a pivotal role at the 2025 FCCA Cruise Conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico, with our executives and teams featured in several key sessions that highlighted industry growth, collaboration and care.

Charting the Course CEO Josh Weinstein opened the conference with a keynote that set an optimistic tone for the future of cruise tourism. He highlighted record-breaking demand and the Caribbean’s central role in the industry’s growth. “Demand is booming and consumer interest in cruising continues to surge,” Josh shared, highlighting the industry’s record-breaking growth and Carnival Corporation’s commitment to sustainability. He emphasized the economic impact: “Cruise tourism generated almost $4.2 billion in direct spending across the region. That’s real money supporting over 94,000 local jobs.” His remarks focused on partnerships with destinations and responsible expansion – ensuring that progress benefits both guests and local communities.

Leading the Way Josh then joined industry leaders for a forward-looking discussion on the future of cruise tourism during the CEO Spotlight panel. He underscored the industry’s enormous growth potential, pointing out that cruising still represents only a small share of the overall vacation market – leaving what he called “a very long runway” for expansion. “One of the reasons why I’m so optimistic about the future of cruise is because we are still tiny,” he adds. “That gives me incredible confidence given the success we’ve had and the relatively small share of the market we’ve reached so far.” Josh also highlighted the importance of destination partnerships, describing cruising as “a doorway to destination tourism” that inspires travelers to return for longer stays. His remarks reinforced Carnival Corporation’s commitment to building strong, transparent relationships 16 Fo ur th Q ua r te r 2025 | Travel & Cr uise

with destination partners – including port authorities, local governments and tourism boards – to support sustainable growth and shared success.

Navigating New Destinations Carnival Cruise Line President Christine Duffy used the Presidential Panel to spotlight the company’s bold investment in

guest experiences, including the launch of Celebration Key on Grand Bahama island. She explained that the new destination – Carnival’s largest-ever project – offers something for everyone, from family-friendly spaces to exclusive beach clubs for adults, while creating economic opportunities for the local community. “Celebration Key has been a great success,” Christine mentioned. “By December 2025, we will be welcoming the one-millionth guest. It’s an investment that delivers unique experiences while supporting the local Bahamian economy.” Princess Cruises President Gus Antorcha added perspective on the Princess brand’s premium positioning, focusing on enrichment and immersive itineraries that connect guests deeply with destinations. “Our guests want more than a vacation – they want discovery,” Antorcha said. “Every itinerary is designed to deliver cultural engagement and meaningful experiences that make travel truly transformative.”

The Future of Homeporting The workshop “The Rise of Homeporting in the Caribbean” explored how homeporting is reshaping cruise deployment and creating new opportunities for destinations. It’s not just where ships dock – it’s about transforming the guest experience and strengthening regional economies. “Homeporting isn’t just a convenience – it’s a catalyst for growth,” said Carlos Estrada, director of commercial homeport operations for Carnival Cruise Line. “When ports and cruise lines work together, we create a seamless experience for guests and unlock economic benefits for communities across the region.” The discussion highlighted what it takes to make this vision a reality: modern terminals, efficient traffic flow and provisioning systems designed for next-generation ships. The result? Faster embarkation, happier guests and stronger partnerships that ripple far beyond the pier.

Cruise Ships to Bring Holiday Gifts, Cheer and Festivities for Deserving Children

T

his holiday season, Santa will climb down cruise ship smokestacks instead of chimneys as he travels to dozens of destinations throughout the Caribbean and Latin America. Because of the efforts of so many, including Old St. Nick himself, the FCCA Foundation, FCCA Member Lines and participating destination partners, thousands of deserving children will have something to celebrate this year during the 24th annual FCCA Foundation Holiday Gift Project. The FCCA Foundation contributed gifts selected for age groups and genders specified by the destinations. With Member Lines’ cruise ships serving as a sleigh and crew as elves, they will deliver the presents to the destinations, where representatives have coordinated festivities both on board and on land. During the celebrations, with guests often ranging from Santa and Shrek to Mickey Mouse and The Cat in the Hat, the children not only receive their presents, but also the gift of a memory that will last a lifetime. The spirit and cheer extend past the children; all of those involved exemplify it and realize the project’s importance, knowing the children probably would not receive toys and smiles otherwise. “I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to

18 Fo ur th Q ua r te r 2025 | Travel & Cr uise

making the Holiday Gift Project event a success,” said Carol Marrero Ortega of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company (PRTC) during last year’s event. “Thanks to your efforts, both the children and their accompanying adults enjoyed a wonderful experience, including the gift distribution by Santa Claus and his helpers. The feedback from all attendees was overwhelmingly positive, and they left with fond memories of the event. Thank you all for being part of this special occasion.” Ortega touched not just on the sentiment, but also on part of the importance of the festivities and the meaning for all involved – helping kids enjoy being kids, a concept seemingly simple, but mostly unknown to the children in shelters and homes benefitted by the project, and something that has a lasting effect on all involved.

“…happiness to children who truly deserve it.” —Michele Paige FCCA CEO

This was also the effect Michele Paige, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the FCCA, recognized: “The FCCA Holiday Gift Project brings happiness to children who truly deserve it. The cruise industry is proud to give back to the communities of the destinations we call, and I cannot think of a more rewarding way than bringing cheer and aid to children who need it.” She encapsulated the main mission of not only the Holiday Gift Project, but also the entire FCCA Foundation: to improve the lives of underprivileged children throughout the Caribbean and Latin America, while aiming to provide them a foundation for their present and future with causes primarily focused on education, sports, and career-building opportunities. Every smile is a reminder of this mandate and an invaluable return on the time, efforts and funds provided for causes and projects like these – and the hundreds of thousands of children who have benefited – over the Foundation’s existence.

The Luxury of Cruising

S

ome travelers may define luxury as opulent accommodations, personalized service, and fine dining, others may see it as opportunity to visit remote bucket-list destinations. Whatever the definition, luxury is one of the fastest growing segments of the cruise industry – and among those attracted by luxury cruising are younger generations of travelers. Proof of the popularity of luxury cruises is in growth. According to Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), the luxury cruise fleet has tripled over the past 15 years, from 28 ships in 2010 to 97 ships in the luxury category in 2024. That growth promises to continue: 1.5 million cruise travelers are forecast to choose a luxury cruise experience by 2028, accounting for 4% of the projected 42 million cruise passengers globally within that same timeframe. Luxury cruise brands are well poised for the fanfare. “If you look at everything from the big ships in the contemporary brands

20 Fo ur th Q ua r te r 2025 | Travel & Cr uise

to where we are with small ship luxury cruising, everyone is upping their game, and consumers are really benefitting from it,” said Samuel Chamberlain, CEO of PONANT EXPLORATIONS Group Americas. Growth has come from new ships and even new luxury lines such as MSC’s Explora Journeys, joining established highend brands including Silversea, Seabourn, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Crystal Cruises, and Ponant. Additionally, popular cruise lines such as Celebrity Cruises, Cunard Line, MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, and Princess Cruises offer luxury shipwithin-a-ship options, affording guests in select cabins and suites access to dedicated dining, lounges and other exclusive spaces, plus enhanced service and amenities.

the luxury cruise fleet has tripled over the past 15 years

Luxury Cruise vs. Hotel Cruise ships offer all the fineries of leading luxury hotels, even butler service. But a big bonus of luxury cruising is cruise ships go places – the dreamy beaches of the Caribbean and Mediterranean, world class cities around the globe, and even to some of the most remote destinations on earth, such as Antarctica, the Arctic, the Galapagos and the Kimberly region of Australia. “Guests can sail to destinations that luxury hotels simply can’t reach, such as remote landscapes and hidden ports that

“…everyone is upping their game…” —Samuel Chamberlain CEO, PONANT EXPLORATIONS Group Americas

feel worlds away from the ordinary,” said Rob Coleman, Senior Vice President of Sales with luxury line Seabourn. “Luxury cruising delivers the sophistication of a world-class resort and the soul of genuine hospitality, but with the added power to take travelers to the most extraordinary corners of the world.” Most luxury cruise ships explore with fewer than 1,000 passengers, some far fewer. According to CLIA, ships under 3,000 passengers account for more than 73% of today’s global fleet.

Overall, travel agents are seeing the highest growth in cruise bookings in the premium, luxury and expedition segments compared to a year ago, according to CLIA’s 2025 State of the Cruise Industry report. Chamberlain informed that with cruising, travel logistics are easier than on land-based trips, which he said is “a luxury in itself.” Guests enjoy oceanfront cabins and suites and only need to unpack once, and luxury cruise fares include everything from intuitive, personalized service to enriching cultural experiences that connect guests with the places they visit.

Today’s Luxury Cruisers Traditionally, luxury cruisers have been Baby Boomers, the wealthiest retiring generation in history, spending $157 billion a year on travel with a significant

amount of that spent on cruises, according to CLIA. Other generations are also taking note. “Today’s luxury cruisers are engaged explorers who are curious, confident travelers, and want to see and experience the world in comfort and style,” added Coleman. “Many are couples in their 50s and 60s who have the means, time and curiosity to travel deeply.” Luxury cruisers ages 29 to 49 are a growing segment, whether traveling on their own or as part of multigenerational families. Another growing segment of luxury cruising is solo travelers, attracted by social aspects of the cruise experience. Cruise lines are responding to increased demand with updated ships and over-the-top enhancements, such as memorable dining experiences, creative wellness offerings, and adventures ashore. Many lines have “slowed” their itineraries, affording more time in ports by day and opportunity to experience local nightlife. Back onboard, spacious staterooms and thoughtfully designed public spaces afford the luxury of room to relax and unwind, all while admiring the sea.

Why Is Expedition Cruising Becoming Travel’s Hottest Ticket

I

magine exploring one of the most remote corners of the world in an inflatable Zodiac. See humpback whales breaching in arctic waters, close enough to count their barnacles. Or snorkel in the Galapagos, encountering a playful pack of sea lions. Expedition cruises bring passengers up close to unspoiled wonders of the world with unmatched convenience, comfort, and ease. These small ship cruises aren’t just a trend; they’re redefining modern travel by bringing the furthest corners of the world within reach. The sector is experiencing significant growth. Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) reports a 150% increase in global capacity for expedition and exploration ships from 2019 to 2029 (including ships on order), with more than 40 small ships sailing today that are specifically built for this type of cruising. Among the many staggering statistics that point to the meteoric rise in popularity of expedition and exploration cruising, there was a 22% rise in passengers from 2023 to 2024, alone.

Experiencing the Ocean Driven by a traveler fascination with exploration and first-hand encounters, expedition cruises have never been more popular. The industry has seen a rapid increase in customer demand. New, boutique-sized ships are equipped with advanced technology and reinforced hulls, enabling them to navigate waters that were once unavailable for consumer travel. Expedition cruises are often the only way to reach remote places such as South Georgia Island, the North Pole, or the Northwest Passage, easily and safely. Expedition cruises offer unique, off-grid itineraries. Immersive, adventure-focused excursions are the highlights of these sailings. Whether you’re kayaking alongside penguin colonies in Antarctica from a luxurious Seabourn expedition ship or snorkeling

22 Fo ur th Q ua r te r 2025 | Travel & Cr uise

alongside sea turtles and stingrays in the Galápagos on the upscale Celebrity Flora expedition ship, these immersive nature encounters create memories of a lifetime.

Appealing to New Generations Expedition voyages have contributed to interest in cruising from younger travelers, particularly Gen Z and Millennials. These guests are often first-time cruisers, seeking extraordinary experiences. Younger travelers seek authentic travel adventures where they can travel with purpose, and are eager to learn about ecosystems, cultures, and climate through expert-led excursions.

Keeping Up with the Demand The exponential growth in expedition fleets has encompassed a remarkable roll out of new, boutique ships, new routes, and uncharted itineraries. New ships are slated to debut in the coming years, including Aurora Expeditions’ Douglas Mawson in 2025, and Quark Expeditions’ plans to expand with a fourth expedition ship. Luxury brands are also expanding the expedition experience beyond the ship. Silversea will launch its first-ever hotel, The Cormorant at 55 South, during the 2025/2026 Antarctica season. The new luxury lodge is in Puerto Williams, Chile – the world’s southernmost town. The cruise line’s entrant into land-based accommodations will offer a stylish launch pad for its Antarctica sailings.

The Cutting Edge of Sustainability Sustainability is a focus for all CLIA member cruise lines, with a commitment to pursuing net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Passengers are eager to see expedition ships helping to protect the unique

environments they sail in, and cruise lines are rising to the challenge. Recent technological innovations include the LNG battery hybrid propulsion on Ponant’s Le Commandant Charcot (with net-zero operations when on battery); Silversea’s first-ever Galapagos waste solution, diverting all non-organic waste away from island landfills; Quark Expeditions’ micro turbine energy, which delivers one of the cleanest, lowest-footprint polar expedition ships; and HX Hurtigruten Expeditions’ award-winning sustainability leadership efforts to reduce their environmental footprint with hybrid ships, shore power, and biofuels.

Future Horizons A world of exploration awaits from the North and South Poles to remote destinations in between. Cruise lines continue to expand to meet the demand for expedition sailings, taking guests on the most thrilling adventures – often complemented with special interest programs targeting, for instance, birders, citizen scientists, and photographers. Expedition cruising’s popularity, blending rugged exploration with premium onboard amenities, shows no sign of slowing as small-ship fleets (and their mighty sustainability efforts) journey to the far reaches of the earth. Cruise Industry Advances Environmental Technologies and Efficiency

T

he cruise industry continues to make measurable progress toward its environmental goals, according to Cruise Lines International Association’s (CLIA) 2025 Environmental Technologies and Practices (ETP) Report. Covering data from 2018 through 2024, the most recent annual report highlights steady gains in energy efficiency, fuel innovation, and waste management across the global fleet. “Cruise lines are early adopters and innovators of maritime technology,” said Bud Darr, president and CEO of CLIA. “From advanced wastewater systems to dual-fuel engines and onshore power, the sector is investing tens of billions of dollars to build the fleet of the future.” More than 90 percent of the world’s oceangoing cruise capacity is represented by CLIA. According to their ETP Report, CLIA member lines operate 310 ships, 73% of which are small to mid-size vessels with 3,000 lower berths or less. With more

than 80 new ships on order worldwide, the global fleet is becoming cleaner and more efficient each year. The report shows the number of ships equipped with multi-fuel engines capable of using zero- and near-zero emission fuels has grown from just one vessel in 2018 to 23 by the end of 2025, including the first cruise ship with tri-fuel capacity. By 2036, 32 dual-fuel ships are forecast to launch, including seven designed for methanol use and 25 capable of using LNG. Adoption of onshore power supply— which allows ships to turn off their engines while docked to reduce emissions—has

nearly doubled since 2018, with 65 percent of capacity able to plug in at port. By 2028, nearly 80 percent of the fleet will be equipped to use onshore power. Environmental innovation extends below the waterline as well. Nearly 30 percent of cruise ships now employ selective catalytic reduction technology to reduce particulate matter and nitrogen oxide emissions. Advanced wastewater treatment systems are installed on 82 percent of the fleet and often exceed international standards. Most cruise ships are also self-sufficient in freshwater production to meet their onboard needs, rather than drawing from ports where resources may be limited. State-of-the-art waste management systems recycle or repurpose nearly all waste generated onboard. Some ships even convert waste to usable energy. CLIA’s annual ETP report shows the cruise industry sailing toward a more sustainable future with a commitment to responsible tourism both at sea and ashore.

MSC’s Milestone in Decarbonization MSC Group’s Cruise Division has reached another major milestone in its decarbonization journey, as two of its vessels—MSC World Europa and EXPLORA II—connected to shore power at Valletta’s Grand Harbour on consecutive days. The back-toback connections mark a first for the company, and the occasion was marked during a high-level event. Together, these operations represent a significant step forward in the Cruise Division’s global shore power program. Since the inauguration of the shore power facility in Valetta in 2024—when MSC World Europa became the first vessel to use the facility—MSC Cruises’ ships have spent about 300 hours connected to shore power in Valletta, effectively eliminating half an entire month’s worth of local emissions that would have otherwise been produced while berthed. Both connections took place alongside the GreenPort Congress 20th Anniversary & Decarbonizing the Future (DTF) Conference 2025, underscoring the Cruise Division’s ongoing commitment to cleaner port operations and Malta’s pivotal role in supporting the European Union’s Fit for 55 plan, which requires all essential European ports to be equipped for shore power use by 2030. 30 Fo ur th Q ua r te r 2025 | Travel & Cr uise

decision aims to strengthen regional connectivity and offer Latin American travelers the opportunity to embark directly from Colombia, eliminating the need to travel to ports in North America or Europe. Additionally, the Colombian Ministry of Tourism launched the new “Rutas del Café” (Coffee Routes) program, highlighting the country’s coffee-growing regions as destinations for experiential and sustainable travel. The initiative aims to attract both domestic and international visitors seeking authentic cultural immersion – connecting small coffee farms in Quindío, Caldas, and Risaralda, offering tourists hands-on activities such as coffee harvesting, roasting workshops, and farmto-cup experiences.

Why Puerto Rico Is a Top Holiday Destination

N

othing really compares to Christmas in Puerto Rico! Yes, we all have our traditions and unique ways of celebrating Christmas worldwide, but no one does Navidad like Puerto Rico. The Island celebrates the longest holiday season in the world, starting in November, right after Thanksgiving, and ending in January with the iconic SanSe festival. But there are many other reasons that set Puerto Rico apart as your ideal Christmas vacation. It’s not only a tropical paradise with a colorful culture, but it also has a vibrant holiday season with many fun traditions and events for everyone to join in and enjoy. From easy-to-plan travel arrangements to a winter season that feels like summer, learn some top reasons to celebrate the holidays Boricua style.

It never feels like winter If you’re dreaming of a warm Christmas, then the heart and soul of the Caribbean is the place for you. Christmas time can mean something other than coats, boots, and cold weather. In Puerto Rico, you can shed the layers, grab a chilled cocktail, and trade the snow for sand. Enjoy walking

in a sunny winter wonderland this festive season, with an average temperature of 70and 85-degrees Fahrenheit from November to January. Take advantage of all the outdoor fun and experiences like feeling the gentle ocean breeze and soaking up the sun, practicing watersports like kayaking or snorkeling, exploring the local cave systems, hiking through a lush tropical rainforest, or taking a stroll over the historic blue cobblestone streets of Old San Juan.

Planning to travel is easy Puerto Rico is a hassle-free vacation destination, even during the hectic holiday season. Traveling from the U.S. mainland is a short and easy plane ride away, and you don’t need a passport. However, you must always travel with a valid ID. And don’t fret about the language barrier or exchanging your money. The two official languages are Spanish and English, and the currency is the U.S. dollar, making it even easier to vacation here and shop for all those last-minute Christmas gifts you’ll be taking back home.

Our traditional holiday cuisine is unmatched There’s no better season to savor authentic Boricua dishes you can only find on the Island. In Puerto Rico, Navidad tastes like arroz con gandules (rice with pigeon peas), tender pieces of lechón asado (spit-roasted pork), and succulent

pasteles (root vegetable patties stuffed with meat). They’re a staple of our holiday cuisine and the direct result of the fusion of cultures and flavors of our ancestors. And, no holiday plate is complete without dessert, so make room for traditional tembleque, a silky coconut custard, or arroz con dulce, a creamy rice pudding topped with cinnamon. And, of course, you can’t forget about coquito, a creamy coconut-based drink that will make you forget all about eggnog.

There’s a festival all season long ‘Tis the season for celebration, and you won’t find a more vibrant party than a Puerto Rican festival. Align your vacation schedule with iconic time-honored festivals that showcase the Boricua Christmas spirit. Immerse yourself completely in the culture through multi-day events that honor essential aspects of Puerto Rican culture like music, food, art, and even religion-rooted traditions. With many fiestas and jubilees across the Island – like Festival de Pascuas and the world-famous Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastián, you’ll surely find one that suits your interest. Regardless of where you go, one thing is for sure: you’ll find live music and staple food to celebrate the season from beginning to end.

Two worlds come together as one Puerto Ricans take holiday traditions very seriously. They stand out for always being fun, joyful, and very bright. You’ll notice how Puerto Rico has adopted U.S. traditions and given them a Boricua twist! There’ll be no shortage of spirited decorations and lights as bright as the stars when you tour around Puerto Rico. You’ll see twinkling rays, Christmas trees, Santa Clauses, and even some reindeer references all around. Still, you’ll be taken back to yesteryear when you sneak a peek at authentic Puerto Rican decorations light up like Pascua flowers, Nativity scenes, and jíbaritos (the ancient Puerto Rican farmer). Also, if you enjoy caroling, join a parranda. This popular custom resembles traditional singing, but it is done by surprising a group of friends with music late at night, and it ends with a party that goes well into the morning.

Celebrate Three Kings Day On January 5, kids join their parents to cut fresh grass and set it in a shoebox under their beds, under the Christmas tree (just like the cookies for Santa Claus), or in a place that is not easy to miss. They hurry into bed as soon as night falls, and the whimsical anticipation for the arrival of the Magi at dawn sets in. It is not specified when, but legend has it Los Tres Reyes (the

three kings) arrive on their camels sometime after the children fall asleep and leave presents for the well-behaved kids. Being a tropical paradise with no camels in sight, the Magi travel on horses. As the wise men leave the presents by the shoebox, the humble carriage snacks on the grass the children kindly laid out for them before magically moving on to the next house. As soon as the rooster sings in the early morning, families across Puerto Rico wake to find presents for them. Get ready to join the jolgorio (party) as you discover what makes a true Navidad Boricua, with parrandas, yesteryear’s recipes, fun-filled iconic holiday festivals, festive music, and pure tropical bliss. Leave the layers and layers of clothes at home and trade the boots for sandals! Winter blues come in ocean waves, and there is no such thing as windchill, only cool sea breeze or fresh mountain air. In Puerto Rico, the snowmen are made of sand, the traditional cuatro and panders accompany Christmas carols, and the coquito will leave you saying, “Eggnog who?” The Christmas spirit fills the Island with joy, laughter, food, and music, which is why locals say that in Puerto Rico es Navidad todo el año (Christmas is all year long). So, get in that Boricua state of mind and discover an Island brimming with holiday traditions as bright as their people. Fo ur th Q ua r te r 2025 | Travel & Cr uise 35

The Dominican Republic Has It All

F

rom cruise milestones and multiple Travvy Awards to hosting the UN Tourism Summit and Caribbean Tourism Investment Summit, the Dominican Republic continues to prove that it has it all.

Puerto Plata’s Cruise Milestone Puerto Plata is set to achieve a historic milestone in December, with 81 cruise ship arrivals – strengthening the Amber Coast’s position as one of the Caribbean’s fastest-growing destinations. The official schedule shows 53 ships docking at Taino Bay and 28 at Amber Cove, reflecting rising demand from major international cruise lines. According to Yokasta Almonte, head of the Mitur office in Puerto Plata, these numbers highlight cruise companies’ confidence in the destination, its strong safety standards, and the Ministry’s ongoing commitment to improving tourist services and experiences. With this performance, Puerto Plata closes the year as a regional leader in the cruise industry and the top destination in the northern region.

Big Wins at 2025 Travvy Awards The Dominican Republic achieved outstanding recognition at the 2025 Travvy Awards, earning three gold awards and several additional honors during the ceremony. The country won gold for Best Caribbean Destination and Best Caribbean Gastronomic Destination, reaffirming its leadership in the region thanks to its strong institutional positioning and the high-quality experience it offers visitors—ranging from its beaches and culture to its service, f lavor, and authenticity. It also received gold for Best Caribbean Tourism Office—a key category that highlights excellence in promotion, communication, innovation, and support for travel industry partners— and secured silver awards for Best Caribbean Cruise Destination and Best Caribbean Honeymoon Destination, along with bronze for Best Caribbean Wedding Destination.

To Host 2027 UN Tourism Summit The country was also chosen to host the UN Tourism General Assembly in 2027, marking the first time in its history to do so. The decision was made during the 26th Assembly in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, recognizing the country’s growing leadership in global tourism and giving a major opportunity to showcase its destinations and share its model of success with international tourism leaders. Tourism Minister David Collado called it a validation of the Dominican Republic’s strategy, saying it proves how the nation has transformed tourism in the region. He added that the country is now “marking the course” for tourism across the Americas. The honor follows Collado’s recent appointment as UN Tourism’s Minister of Tourism of the Americas, the first person ever to receive that title. Both recognitions highlight the Dominican Republic’s innovative and effective management of its tourism industry.

Reaffirms Status as Regional Hub Additionally, the Dominican Republic was selected to host next year’s Caribbean Tourism Investment Summit, a major regional event that will bring together

government leaders, investors, and tourism professionals from across the Americas. Organized by the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA), the summit will focus on sustainable development, innovation, and financing for tourism infrastructure in the Caribbean. Tourism Minister David Collado welcomed the decision, calling it a “vote of confidence” in the Dominican Republic’s leadership in tourism recovery and investment attraction. Punta Cana will host the event, which will include discussions on renewable energy in resorts, destination branding, and the role of public-private partnerships – and likely lead to new agreements and funding for hotel projects, airports, and environmental conservation efforts. By hosting the event, the Dominican Republic reaffirms its position as a regional hub for tourism growth and innovation in the Caribbean. Jamaica Building Back Better St. Maarten Marks Meteoric Growth The St. Maarten Department of Statistics (STAT) reports continued positive developments in the tourism sector for the second quarter of 2025. St. Maarten recorded 209,876 airport passenger arrivals, representing a 16.9% increase compared to the same period in 2024. This growth underscores the improved accuracy and reliability of arrival records, which are now based on consistently applied criteria that exclude St. Maarten residents, transit passengers, and transfer passengers. STAT uses these figures as the official benchmark for passenger movements through Princess Juliana International Airport (PJIAE). The cruise sector also posted similar results. Preliminary data shows that 236,391 cruise passengers arrived between April and June 2025, an increase of 14% compared to 2024. This growth underscores St. Maarten’s position as a thriving port of call in the Caribbean. Together, both air and cruise tourism indicators highlight a healthy and growing industry. Passenger movements provide insight into overall visitor traffic through the airport, while cruise arrivals reinforce St. Maarten’s strength as a hub for day visitors. Additionally, growth should continue through new initiatives including a new partnership between SHOWME Caribbean, the Caribbean’s premier provider of high-definition destination live streams, and WMVision International, a global leader in Location Based Content for Broadcasters. This collaboration establishes SHOWME Caribbean as WMVision’s primary Caribbean content partner and will significantly boost the exposure of St. Maarten and other Caribbean live hotspots 38 Fo ur th Q ua r te r 2025 | Travel & Cr uise

Despite a historic hurricane, Jamaica has already recovered and proven to be building back better – and ready to seize the momentum it had previously established. Jamaica’s Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett reiterated his goal for a full tourism industry restart by December 15, informing the government is mobilizing all sectors to achieve a synchronized recovery. To deliver on that timeline, the Ministry has established a dedicated Hurricane Melissa Recovery Task Force and a separate Tourism Resilience Coordination Committee—with both bodies including public and private sector leaders— and the tourism sector in Jamaica is projected to be fully operational by May 2026, with the goal is to restore full service: hotels, resorts, attractions and infrastructure. Minister Bartlett also underscored the pivotal role of Montego Bay, St. James, in Jamaica’s post-Hurricane Melissa tourism recovery, noting that the city will be critical to boosting the island’s economy during the upcoming winter tourist season. Following tours he led of Ocho Rios and Negril, he described the “journey to the tourism Mecca of the Caribbean, Montego Bay” on November 29 as an effort to reaffirm the city’s central place in Jamaica’s future and in the wider regional economy.

Before the tragedy, Jamaica was moving full steam ahead – including being named Caribbean’s Leading Destination for the 19th time, a testament to its sustained excellence in hospitality and tourism, while receiving 45 major awards (29 regional awards and 16 national prizes) and underscoring the nation’s commitment to quality, innovation, and delivering memorable visitor experiences. Notably, Jamaica was named the Caribbean’s Leading Cruise Destination 2025, with the Port of Ocho Rios named the Caribbean’s Leading Cruise Port 2025, and the Port of Montego Bay was named the Caribbean’s Leading Home Port 2025. Additionally, Jamaica became the Caribbean’s most connected destination, with flights to over 55 international gateways in airports around the world. The Jamaica Tourist Board celebrated the milestone—and projected 4.5 million visitors this year, with 3.1 million stopover visits and 1.4 million cruise passengers—at the JAPEX media breakfast, where Minister Bartlett shared, “Jamaica’s rapid expansion in airlift is more than just a milestone for tourism; it’s a catalyst for national transformation. Our vision is clear: tourism must work for all Jamaicans. These investments are creating opportunities for small businesses, communities, and workers, ensuring the benefits of growth are shared equitably across the island.”

St. Vincent and the Grenadines Welcomes a Better Future St. Vincent and the Grenadines has welcomed new leadership, with a sweeping victory of Dr. Godwin Friday and the New Democratic Party (NDP) on November 27. NDP won conclusively, seizing 14 of 15 seats and delivering a decisive setback to the Unity Labour Party (ULP), who had governed the nation for close to a quarter century – marking one of the most significant political shifts in the nation’s modern history. “The people have come out and said… ‘We want a better future for ourselves,’” Dr. Friday said as hundreds of people gathered in the capital, Kingstown, to support him, many blowing vuvuzelas in excitement. The resonance of the new Prime Minister’s message lies in its elegant simplicity. He must serve with the integrity that earned the nation’s trust – and prove with consistent action that improves the lives of citizens. Fortunately, momentum is on his side, with the nation proving to be one the fastest-growing destinations in the Caribbean – and planning an injection of $20 million on the upgrade and development of new tourism sites and four new hotels, one of them representing the largest single tourism development in the nation’s history. The landmark government investment will focus on enhancing the visitor experience at established attractions while also developing new products that showcase the country’s diverse natural, cultural, and historical assets. Additionally, St. Vincent and the Grenadines is set to welcome 376 ships during the 2025-2026 cruise season. The capital will receive 89 cruise ships this season, and the island’s main port in Beguia, Port Elizabeth, is expected to host 119 cruise calls. Other Grenadian islands will also remain very active, with Union Island welcoming 33 cruise ships; Mayreau having 63; the Tobago Cays hosting 54; and Canouan receiving 20.

Aruba Surging and Training Aruba is experiencing a remarkable surge in Canadian visitor arrivals, reinforcing its position as one of the Caribbean’s most sought-after sun destinations. In the first half of 2025, the island welcomed 41,754 Canadian tourists, marking an 8.2% increase compared to the same period in 2024. The trend reflects the growing appeal of Aruba among travelers from cold-weather regions seeking warm, safe, and easily accessible getaways – and was aided by expanded air connectivity and strategic marketing initiatives across Canada. Additionally, it hosted Aquila’s Center for Cruise Excellence, the official

Colombia Routing a New Era Cartagena, Colombia reaffirmed its status as a leading cruise destination in the Southern Caribbean with the return of Royal Caribbean International, which announced the reactivation of its regular operations from Cartagena’s Cruise Terminal. Plans call for 75 uninterrupted sailings through April 2027, with routes through the Caribbean and Central America, marking a new era for the city’s maritime tourism and economy. Serenade of the Seas and Grandeur of the Seas will be the main vessels leading the itineraries. Serenade began operations on October 15 and will set sail every Sunday through April 2026, and Grandeur will begin sailing in May 2026 and continue until the end of the season. The strategic

decision aims to strengthen regional connectivity and offer Latin American travelers the opportunity to embark directly from Colombia, eliminating the need to travel to ports in North America or Europe.

The trip and interactions focused on exploring strategic opportunities to preserve and enhance the cruise industry’s momentous economic impact throughout the country – with initiatives centered on goals established with the recent Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed by Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum, including collaborating further with cruise lines; increasing the use of Mexican products onboard; expanding the promotion of Mexico; promoting the “Made in Mexico” brand onboard; supporting Mexican cultural products; training and hiring Mexican seafarers; and establishing working groups to strengthen institutional relationships and deepen public-private collaboration

Mahahual’s Community Center Gets a Fresh Start Following the acquisition of the Costa Maya Cruise Port in July 2025, Royal Caribbean was honored to become the new steward of the Wayak Community Center. The center and the vacation company have a shared goal of enhancing this space for the Mahahual population in 2026. Those plans include relocating the center to a larger, more accessible location and inviting the community to help shape the center’s future, through a community vote to name the future center and through ongoing programmatic working groups. venue, and Royal Caribbean is committed to ensuring that local community members are included every step of the way. Since opening its doors in 2014, the center has been a vibrant hub for Mahahual, hosting more than 1,000 workshops focused on holistic development, positively impacting 90% of local children, and building a strong network of 60 active volunteers. The center’s Director Senaida Gómez will continue in her role, bringing her deep expertise and passion to new programming that will support the social, cultural and economic growth of residents of all ages. “Exciting changes are coming to Mahahual, but what will remain constant is the mission of building a strong and resilient community for future generations,” said Ari Adler Brotman, President, Royal Caribbean Group Mexico. “Our regional initiatives will reflect Royal Caribbean’s legacy and proven expertise to promote economic development, community impact and environmental preservation in the destinations we operate. We look forward to working together with local partners as this evolution unfolds.”

Amber Cove Cruise Center Celebrates 10th Anniversary Carnival Corporation & plc celebrated the 10th anniversary of its Amber Cove Cruise Center in the Dominican Republic on November 18, marking a decade of partnership, progress and community pride in the Puerto Plata region. Opened in 2015, Amber Cove ushered in a new era of tourism for the country’s north coast, reestablishing the region as a premier destination for cruise travel after more than three decades without regular cruise ship visits. “Amber Cove represents the power of collaboration and community,” said Vicky Rey, Vice President of Government Relations for Carnival Corporation. “As the company marks its 10-year milestone, the celebration honors not just a port but a partnership built with and for the people of Puerto Plata. Over

the past decade, this destination has become a symbol of pride, driving opportunity, supporting families, and welcoming guests from around the world. This milestone is about the people who have made Amber Cove what it is today, and we’re excited for what the next decade will bring.” Carnival Corporation also announced a donation of $10,000 to Fundación Maimón Avanza, represented at the event by President Jathanael Hurtado Tejada and

Social Manager Randy Miguel Rumaldo, in support of its 2026 Community Workshops Program “Maimón Avanza.” The initiative will include 35 training workshops in entrepreneurship, leadership, values, technology, and English for tourism, benefiting more than 700 residents of Maimón. The contribution reflects the company’s continued commitment to education, opportunity, and community development in Maimón.

How Carnival Corporation Is Transforming Bahamian Communities Carnival Corporation’s commitment to creating jobs and driving economic impact for local communities is at the heart of every exclusive destination it develops. Nowhere is this more evident than at Celebration Key, where partnerships with local entrepreneurs are helping to unlock new opportunities for Grand Bahama. Carnival Corporation has partnered with almost 60 Bahamian businesses to bring authentic local experiences to Celebration Key, meaning 80% of the restaurants and retail outlets at the destination are Bahamian-owned and operated. These partnerships support our commitment to create 700 permanent jobs for locals – ensuring that the heartbeat of Celebration Key is truly Bahamian. One of the most inspiring examples of this impact is the story of Tenisha Carey, designer and CEO of Baha Gala, whose handcrafted

jewelry is now a radiant part of Celebration Key. Tenisha’s journey is one of perseverance. After Hurricane Dorian devastated Grand Bahama, many dreams were paused – but not hers. Her voice carries the weight of survival and the joy of revival. When she got the call to showcase her work, she showed up with trays full of jewelry – ready to be seen, felt and understood. At Celebration Key, she offers guests a hands-on experience: they can co-create their own jewelry, personalize readymade designs, and add a piece of themselves to their island-made treasure. Tenisha’s story is just one example of many small businesses benefiting from Carnival Corporation’s deep connections with local communities – and the commitment to support entrepreneurs like her and together help promote sustainable jobs and economic opportunities in cruise communities.

The Los Angeles Board of Harbor Commissioners has unanimously approved an agreement with the South Coast Air Quality Management District (South Coast AQMD), Port of Los Angeles and Port of Long Beach to accelerate development and implementation of zero-emission technology and infrastructure at both ports. The cooperative agreement covers all major port emission source categories, including cargo handling equipment, harbor craft, trucks, trains and ocean-going vessels. “The passage of the Cooperative Agreement is just one way we are continuing our historic efforts to create a cleaner, more sustainable city,

including the Port of Los Angeles,” said Mayor Karen Bass. “By working together with our partners at South Coast AQMD and the Port of Long Beach we will continue to build upon this moment, achieving our shared goal of cleaner air, healthier communities, and a more climate resilient future for all.” Approved by the South Coast AQMD and the Port of Long Beach in November, the agreement calls on both ports to develop comprehensive zero-emission infrastructure plans in three phases, starting with a draft plan in May 2027. Approved plans for all emission categories are required under the agreement by the end of 2029.

Port Everglades Sets Record, Welcomes Waves of Next-Gen Ships

B

roward County’s Port Everglades is making history by homeporting three brand-new cruise ships and exceeding its own passenger record with a preliminary guest count of more than 4.7 million during Fiscal Year 2025 (beginning October 1, 2024). In addition, Broward County is celebrating major capital improvements at Port Everglades, including an expanded convention center and an elevated roadway for traffic relief. In November, Port Everglades was also the site of naming ceremonies for Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Xcel, Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Destiny and Princess Cruises’ Star Princess – three new-build cruise ships that are reaching new heights for Caribbean cruising. Coinciding with these ship celebrations, new infrastructure at the port includes the Omni Fort

Lauderdale Hotel, an expanded convention center and a flyover that takes convention attendees directly from U.S. 1 (Federal Highway) to the more than 1.2 million-square-foot event space and provides residents and tourists with a shortcut to the beach. “Cruising is more popular than ever, and the cruise lines are exceeding guest expectations every time a new ship comes into the marketplace,” said Port Everglades CEO and Port Director Joseph Morris. Princess Cruises’ Star Princess, the line’s second Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) fueled Sphere-class vessel, celebrated her inaugural season from Port Everglades starting November 7, 2025. Both the 4,300-passenger Star Princess and her sister ship, Sun Princess, will homeport

at Port Everglades this cruise season. Echoing the sleek, sophisticated design of Sun Princess, Star Princess will also boast cutting-edge features like The Dome, the first geodesic dome at sea, and The Sphere, a breathtaking glass-enclosed Piazza at the heart of the ship. Disney Cruise Line brings even more magic to Port Everglades when iconic Disney, Pixar and Marvel heroes and villains spring to life on board Disney Destiny, the newest ship in the line’s fleet and third in the Wish class. The new 4,000-passenger (full occupancy), LNG-powered ship began her inaugural year of 4- and 5-night cruises from Fort Lauderdale to The Bahamas and Western Caribbean on November 20, 2025, joining seasonal sailings from Port Everglades aboard Disney Dream. Celebrity Cruises’ named its newest ship, Celebrity Xcel, at Port Everglades on November 16, 2025. With a guest count of 3,250, Xcel is Celebrity’s fifth Edge-class cruise ship, all of which have been named at Port Everglades. The newest Celebrity Cruises ship will feature new experiences from her sister ships including an enhanced poolside paradise, an arcade lounge under neon lights, and new spa experiences to unwind in style. Plus, Celebrity’s first-ever Celebrity Flagship store immerses guests in the vacation brand’s journey of innovation and offer custom mementos to cherish for years to come. In addition, Royal Caribbean has announced that its third Icon-class vessel, Legend of the Seas, will homeport at Port Everglades in November 2026. With a passenger capacity of more than 5,600, Legend of the Seas will be the largest cruise ship to ever sail from Port Everglades. For this cruise season, the port will host 40 cruise ships from nine cruise lines, plus a near-daily fast ferry that services The Bahamas. The port has a conservative projection of 4.7 million cruise guests for Fiscal Year 2026 (October 1, 2025, to September 30, 2025).

Navigating the Port On the landside, Port Everglades continues to enhance the pre-cruise planning experience for cruise guests with two new digital features. The Find-a-Cruise directory and an interactive parking map on the port’s website, PortEverglades.net, offer cruise guests more control and clarity ahead of arrival. Using Find-a-Cruise, guests can search sailings by date, cruise line, destination or duration. They can also review tentative terminal assignments and identify potential parking locations in advance. To view Find-a-Cruise, visit PortEverglades. net/Find-a-Cruise. The port’s interactive parking map shows guests where to drop off luggage at each of the port’s eight cruise terminals before parking, easing uncertainty during peak embarkation hours. Paired with the port’s colorful and detailed wayfinding signs at the checkpoints and throughout the port, cruise guests should find it easier to navigate the world’s third-busiest cruise homeport. Port Everglades is also augmenting accessibility through the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program. Cruise guests with non-visible conditions or disabilities can use an identifier such as a

The port’s proximity to highways, the interstate and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport are among the features that cruise guests find appealing. Adding to the ease of travel are three new projects led by Broward County government: The expanded Broward County Convention Center of Greater Fort Lauderdale; an elevated bypass road and an 801-room hotel. The newly opened Convention Center Connector (Bypass Road), an elevated bypass through Port Everglades, provides direct connectivity from U.S. 1, State Road 84 and SE 17th Street to the Convention Center, Cruise Terminals 2 and 4 and the Omni Fort Lauderdale Hotel, eliminating the need to pass through port security checkpoints. The Bypass Road also improves access to the beaches and nearby businesses along the Southeast 17th Street Causeway, easing congestion in one of the busiest corridors in the region.

Future Investments A roadmap for future growth at Port Everglades is moving forward. The port’s Master/Vision Plan Update outlines more than $3 billion in long-term investments to enhance the port’s capacity, efficiency and sustainability over the next 20 years. The update was developed over two years in concert with port staff, stakeholders and the public. Updates are conducted to identify global industry trends and capital improvements necessary to support the continued growth of the port’s diversified business lines of cruise, cargo, and energy. Among the projects identified in the Master/Vision Plan Update are functional improvements, such as the Bulkhead Replacement Project currently underway, and investments that address market trends like the redevelopment of cruise terminals to accommodate today’s cruise guests and larger cruise ships. All these developments put Port Everglades in a position to continue serving its cruise customers with an adaptable, high-efficiency homeport built for the next generation of cruising. Beyond Bricks and Mortar: Why People Are the True Investment in Cruise Destinations By Beth Hatt, Founder of the Aquila Center for Cruise Excellence, FCCA’s exclusive training partner

E

very year, cruise destinations spend millions on gleaming terminals, lengthened piers, and glossy marketing campaigns to attract cruise lines. These investments matter—infrastructure is important—but too often, one piece is missing from the growth strategy: the people. At Aquila, working across the Caribbean, Latin America, and beyond, we see the same pattern. Destinations invest heavily in physical assets but less in the very people who greet, guide, and host cruise guests. Yet cruise executives consistently say that human interaction is the single most important factor in the guest experience. When guests return home, what do they talk about? Not the gangway – they remember the taxi driver who shared a story, the tour guide who brought history to life, or the server who made them feel welcome. People create memories, and memories drive guest satisfaction and loyalty.

The ROI of Training Infrastructure can cost tens of millions; training often costs only thousands. Yet the impact is enormous. Training equips guides, operators, taxi drivers, and retailers to not just meet but exceed guest expectations. We’ve seen this across destinations. In St. Vincent & the Grenadines this summer, hundreds of professionals joined Service Excellence WOW workshops, with direct improvements in service. In Aruba, operators reimagined guest experiences with innovations that will be noticed by both guests and cruise lines. In the Dominican Republic, a new FCCA partnership has made service excellence a core growth strategy in all five ports. Curaçao, the British Virgin Islands, Aventuras Panama, and St Kitts have also all invested this year in their people – training tour guides, frontlines, and tour operators. The Puerto Rico Tourism Company has spent more than a decade investing 46 Fo ur th Q ua r te r 2025 | Travel & Cr uise

in people – training frontlines, preparing small ports, and ensuring all tour operators achieved Aquila’s ACE Tour Operator Designation. They pioneered immersive learning through our Living Lab, first in Canada and later through a reverse best practice in San Juan. Today, Puerto Rico is recognized for its transformation, built on consistent investment in service. Procolombia has shown equal commitment to their people, training guides, leading sustainability workshops, and preparing the community of Cabo de la Vela through a cruise readiness program. Both Puerto Rico Tourism Company and Procolombia’s leadership earned them Aquila’s Whalesong Destination Service Award in 2023 and 2024, respectively.

“…human interaction is the single most important factor in the guest experience.”

When training is prioritized alongside infrastructure, destinations multiply the return on every investment.

What Cruise Lines Are Saying At FCCA’s CEO panels, the message is consistent: infrastructure matters, but people move the needle. A terminal may bring a ship to port, but people bring the guests back. The difference between a “check the box” port call and one guests rave about is the warmth, professionalism, and authenticity of the welcome.

The Path Forward For destinations, the choice is clear. Investing in people is not optional; it is the differentiator. Training is not a cost to trim but an investment with immediate ROI. It secures repeat calls, builds community pride, and ensures infrastructure investments reach their full potential. The future of cruise tourism will belong to destinations that recognize this balance. Ports may compete with bigger piers and flashier terminals, but it’s the destinations that invest in their people who will win the loyalty of cruise lines and guests alike – and will make all those infrastructure investments much more worthwhile. At Aquila, we’ve built our purpose around lighting this path of excellence: one person, one guest interaction, one destination at a time. Because in the end, it’s not the place they’ll remember. It’s the people who made them feel welcome.
