FLATCEST OR COURSECEST

APICK YOUR POISON

las dear fresher, you have found yourself at the classic divergence of moral roads. You look in the mirror

after a long day of batting eyelashes at the cute English guy in your politics tutorial, followed by an overly romantic late night cooking session with the engineer who sleeps in the room next door. You look in the mirror after a long day of batting eyelashes at the cute English guy in your politics tutorial, followed by an overly romantic late night cooking session with the engineer who sleeps in the room next door. You helped explain the impact of colonisation to the Brit and aided the engineer in turning the oven on. You feel it with both of them, that deep burning desire that arises when sexuality is tapped into for the first time ever (God bless that catholic upbringing). But, the age old question remains, which is the better option?

The Coursemate: easily done. Ask them to catch a coffee after class, set up a group study session, sit beside them on a course night out and let the chips fall as they may. The options are endless. The consequences? Having to spend the next 4 years looking at them across small classrooms, doing group projects with them and watching them inevitably fall out of love with you and in love with the girl who looks just like you but dresses better, spends her free time volunteering at a homeless shelter or looking after her dying granny and her dream in life is to join the peace corps

The Flatmate: even more easily done and this option does not require going to class at all…score! Get to know their schedule inside and out and next thing you know you're cooking dinner together every night and making pancakes every morning Sure there’s the chance things blow up and you have to awkwardly avoid them for the rest of the year, but what’s a year when it comes to the potential of true love! And just think about how fun it would be to tell your kids that you really did find love in a hopeless place (Note: bonus points if your flatmate also just so happens to be on the JCR even if you can only ride them in the red jacket because power is the aphrodisiac, not them)

So, what path can we at The Piranha, as your eternal spirit guides, advise you to take? There is only one answer here Choose the path that leads you right back to where you started. To the mysteriously stained blue/grey couches, the sticky lino floors and that funny smell that just never seems to leave Choose the path that requires only two steps outside your bedroom door to get the ride Home is where the heart is where the heart is, afterall

BRIAN LOWE

Who am I? Good question. I am Brian from the shop in the Canteen in Trinity Hall. I’ve been working in the shop in Trinity Hall for about 12-13 years now.

WHAT IS MY FAVOURITE PART OF THE JOB?

It would have to be meeting so many interesting, and friendly, students. Each year there are a lot of new students to meet, apart from the lovely members of the JCR, Welfare and a few others, who stay for their second year. It is a pleasure to know you all I also run the shop’s Instagram page @socialtrinityhall which contains details about new products, special offers and fun facts about ducks!

WHAT IS THE HARDEST PART OF THE JOB?

Remembering your names. I know some of you have told me your names when you have been in the shop. Please forgive me if I forget your names. You may need to remind me a couple of times I will try to remember your names before the end of May

DUCK FACT OF THE DAY!

About a day after baby ducks (ducklings) are born they are able to walk, swim and forage for food on their own but they still stick close to mum when they are outside and often follow her in a neat, single file line.

DO

I HAVE ANYTHING ELSE TO ADD?

No. Apart from that I hope you all have a fantastic time in Trinity Hall and if there is anything you need from the shop pop in and ask me.

2. Bear Market -another cheeky franchise located on Georges Street ,Pembroke Westland Row and Stillorgan (irrelevant flop) Bear market makes their own blend of coffee and it’s genuinely the best coffee I have ever consumed. If you’re a creature of habit like me, Bear Market has so many stores with a set menu across all with consistently quality traybakes and banging iced coffee.

4 Coffee Co at Cloud Nine- the ratio of sweet treat to coffee here is very skewed but the sweet treat is the most important part in my humble opinion. This is also the most aesthetically pleasing café décor i've ever seen , they have a waterfall for god sake However, beauty is pain and this is a slightly more expensive spot As someone who gets a serotonin boost from the colour pink I would definitely put this on my dublin bucket list.

From an avid sweet treat enjoyer and chronic procrastinator

Kc Peaches – you know her you love her (but your bank account loves her more ) helloooo 10% student discount. Kc peaches (located on Nassau and her sister store is on Dame street)is the spot for a sweet treat , >€6 toastie and a banging matcha . She always has a charging port for me :) 1.

3. Beanhive – located on Dawson, Beanhive is the primo spot for an instagramable bit of latte art see here This is also a favourite of our international welfare officer and the lovely amberlee of welfare 2023 fame . Fear not if you're not a latte art baddie there is still the option for the largest stuffed ciabatta I’ve ever seen

5. Bijou deli – now this is definitely not your near campus sweet treat spot, located in our very own D6 it’s a 10 min walk from Halls (You may have spotted bijou on a very classy post night out walk home from the 15) walking to bijou is by far my favourite little procrastination dander at Halls. They serve sausage rolls, pastries, coffees and even a chicken fillet roll if ya nasty

ALL THINGS HALLS ALL THINGS HALLS

Hey guys, I've pried myself away from my studies to give you all the info on sensory spots

Hey guys, I've pried myself away from my studies to give you all the info on sensory spots in halls as well as my tips and tricks to life in halls But first of all, who am I?? I’m the in halls as well as my tips and tricks to life in halls. But first of all, who am I?? I’m the disability as well as the House 85 welfare officer, I’m born and raised in Castlebar, disability as well as the House 85 welfare officer, I’m born and raised in Castlebar, Co.Mayo and I can usually be found burning the ear off a poor sod in Workmans Co.Mayo and I can usually be found burning the ear off a poor sod in Workmans smoking area about “how its defo mayos year this year”(its not) or begging one of smoking area about “how its defo mayos year this year”(its not) or begging one of my friends to get a sweet treat after a long hard my friends to get a sweet treat after a long hard day (1 lecture)... day (1 lecture)...

Halls sensory spots:

Botanical Gardens:

The botanical gardens are behind the 80-82 building block, it's good to pop in as it allows for students to get some peace and quiet and have a look at some of the plants that are used in teaching in the college!! Although it can be busy as it is sometimes used for teaching so I would recommend to time it right.

Oldham:

Oldham is definitely one of my favourite spots in halls, it's a great place to study, meet up with friends, play pool and of course it is home to many fantastic JCR and Welfare events!! (plz come, I beg) Oldham has loads of sensory spaces such as enclosed chairs, rocking chairs and couches dotted around the building as well as large windows providing natural light and also a place to people watch! It's open daily from 8am to 11.30pm so defo check it out!

Tips and tricks to life in halls!

The social “Brians” shop: Brian's shop, the lifeforce for all students in halls, it’s helped me through last minute assignments, exam season and general day to day life With all the essentials here to keep you going it is definitely good to know about! Even just popping in for a chat with Brian is sure to make your day better!!

JCR Events

Okay now onto the REALLY good stuff!! JCR events are held every so often, they can be club nights featuring the infamous canteen prinks or they can be more chill such as the wine and cheese nights or arts and crafts, there truly is something for everyone! I have met some of my best friends in halls at these events and I would 100% recommend going to as many as you can! At these events your fabulous JCR and even better Welfare team will be on hand for anything that goes wrong!

Cooking:

Cooking in halls is a sore spot for me, with my flatmate Xander last year remarking “ every time I see burnt food, I think of you ” (to the people in 91 15 that's why it smells like that) there definitely is a learning curve, but having 4 go to fast meals that you can make in 10 mins or less will be a lifesaver once the workload starts to pile on (tomato pasta is my go-to).

The ovens in halls don't have numbers on them and not all flats have a key on it so i've done my welfairy duty and enclosed one here for yis (don't we treat ye so well)

Okay so that's pretty much it! If you have any more questions about halls you can go onto instagram @trinityhalljcr.welfare. Here you will find all welfare related info on a variety of topics including mental health, sexual health and of course our super-fun welfare events happening in Halls throughout the year You can also contact this page if you have any queries or questions If you need any advice from topics such as breakups and homesickness, anything at all You can also contact your welfare officers via instagram, our accounts are linked to our photos on the Welfare Insta, just find your house Welfairy and DM them and they will get back to ye as soon as they can to give you support!!
