Football and fasteners After Germany’s success at the FIFA World Cup the country can rightly state that it has the best football team in the world. However, it is not just football that Germans excel at – the country is also renowned for its fastener manufacturing.
O
ur July issue includes a ‘Made in Germany’ feature that looks at the vast fastener manufacturing capabilities within the country. Articles include an insight into leading washer manufacturer – Adolf Pühl – and its ability to produce standard and non-standard flat washers and pressings; GESIPA explaining how it has developed into an international company for blind riveting technology; and Metall-Kunststoff-Technik underlining its anchoring technology and commitment to quality. There are also articles from Mubea Tellefedern, Heinz Soyer, E.U.R.O Tec and Lueg-Stanztechnik – all showcasing their individual manufacturing prowess. For those of you who like to keep up with developments within the industry, the News section is a must read with details on some key acquisitions and partnerships – involving American, European and Asian companies that will affect the entire fastener industry. The Cover Story is an interview with Jan Melichar, owner of MEKR’S s.r.o. Mr Melichar talks about how the Czech company
was established, the key points in its development, and how the company ensures that it provides quality products and service to its customers. Further articles include two unique features in the Manufacturing Technology section. Firstly, I had the pleasure to visit CTR Manufacturing Group and speak to Managing Director James Blanchfield about the company’s recent investment plan. James explains how the investment plan has been used to introduce new machinery and will enable the business to continue to grow. There is also an article from Carlo Salvi in which the Italian based company focuses on its newly introduced 616 WS model – a 6-die progressive header – and the possibilities it offers users. To add to this there are the regular sections – Construction Fixings, Tools, Application Technology and Products – all of which have news on the latest innovations.

Nedschroef to be sold to Shanghai Prime Machinery On 28th May Nedschroef owners, Gilde Buy Out Partners and Parcom Capital, confirmed they had agreed to sell Koninklijke Nedschroef Holding B.V to Shanghai Prime Machinery Company Limited (PMC). The transaction has been valued at 325 million euros.
P
MC is a 49.6% controlled subsidiary of Shanghai Electric Group Corporation (SEC), an 11 billion euro revenue group listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. Completion of the transaction will require regulatory approvals and PMC will need to obtain shareholder approval for the acquisition. Nedschroef has revenues in excess of 500 million euros and employs approximately 1,500 people, primarily in production facilities in Germany. PMC is one of China’s largest fastener exporters recording 2013 revenues of more than 400 million euros. Combined group fastener sales are expected to exceed 600 million euros. Having successfully weathered the global financial crisis and subsequent period expansion under the stewardship of its private equity owners Nedschroef says it is entering a new phase in its history, becoming “part of a powerful and well funded diversified industrial group with a long-term horizon and vision to be the leading global fastener company”. The company describes the transaction as “a landmark accomplishment for Nedschroef and a testimony to its market leadership following years of consistent investments in its technical capabilities and state of the art facilities”. The statement emphasises that “PMC will build on Nedschroef’s intimate, longstanding relationships with leading OEM car manufacturers and suppliers around the globe and will gain a world-class platform to further grow the company's fasteners division. PMC is committed to backing Nedschroef’s global expansion strategy".
Nedschroef will continue to operate independently under its own brand name and its management is said to be excited to continue leading the development of the group within PMC. The headquarters will remain in Helmond, the Netherlands, and all of Nedschroef’s current production locations will be maintained. The statement reassured that “it will be ‘business as usual’ for customers who can continue to count on best in class fastener products delivered on time, anywhere in the world. Also for employees there will be no changes as a result of the acquisition". Mathias Hüttenrauch, CEO of Nedschroef, said: “I am very grateful to all at Nedschroef and our shareholders Gilde and Parcom for their contribution and unrelenting support over the past years. They’ve helped transform the company into what it has become. Building on centuries of experience, craftsmanship, and a tradition of quality, I am convinced that with this important new step in Nedschroef’s evolution we will be able to accelerate our global expansion programme and take full advantage of the tremendous growth opportunities in Asia and elsewhere in the world. We vow to serve our customers with the best fastener product where they need it and when they need it.” Mr Zhiyan Zhou, CEO of PMC, commented: “This is a great day for PMC. With the addition of Nedschroef, its excellent people, the technological expertise, and the relationships with the major car manufacturers in Europe, we will be able to make a step change in our fasteners business. We will leverage its cutting edge expertise and Nedschroef will immediately benefit from our strong Asian footprint. This is very much a win-win situation.”
Trifast revenue up 7% 2013-14 Trifast plc reported preliminary results for the year ending 31st March 2014, with group revenue increasing 7% to GB£129.78 million.
O
perating profit was up 31% to GB£9.41 million. Margin improvements came from sourcing policies, vendor consolidation and freight/packaging efficiencies. The group confirmed its objective to accelerate expansion by strategic acquisitions. In May it bought Viterie Italia Centrale Srl. In response to growing opportunities in the ASEAN Free Trade Area Trifast has established a new subsidiary in Thailand – it already has production facilities in Singapore and Malaysia. In Europe, TR Sweden had a particularly good year based on the automotive and telecoms sectors; TR Holland saw sales growth in automotive and domestic appliances; Hungarian growth came from the electronics sector. TR Norway was the only division to struggle mainly due to the demise of traditional business emigrating to lower cost countries and Trifast is in the process of switching its attention to the oil and gas sector.

Fontana Group purchases Acument Global Technologies Inc The Fontana Group has acquired Acument Global Technologies Inc from Platinum Equity for an undisclosed figure.
F
ontana announced it "becomes today the absolute worldwide leader in providing world-class fasteners solutions as a result of the acquisition, on 19th June 2014 of Acument Global Technologies Inc, the leader in providing manufacturing fastener solutions for the markets of United States, Mexico and South America, from Platinum Equity". The acquisition expands Fontana's presence to 22 manufacturing operations located in Europe, North America, Mexico and Brazil, as well as logistics centres across the world, generating annual turnover of US$1.1 billion (803.6 million euros) and employing 4,200 people. Fontana added: "This transaction demonstrates the commitment of Fontana Gruppo to enhance the success of its global customers by expanding its global reach, acquiring world-class brands and patents and improving its ability to offer the most competitive fastening solutions."
Fontana Luigi SpA was established in 1952 in Veduggio, Italy. Over a period of more than forty years it has pursued an acquisition strategy resulting in some twelve manufacturing companies joining the Group including: Lobo, Bulloneria Barge, Invitea, French manufacturer G.F.D, and more recently LEP Special Fastener in the United States. It has also set up a network of distribution companies across the world under the Fontana Fasteners name. Formerly Textron Fastening Systems, Acument Global Technologies has 11 manufacturing and distribution operations in the US, Mexico and South America, employing some 2,300 people. Acument Global Technologies Inc owns and licenses a series of leading fastening systems including TORX® and TORX PLUS® drives, as well as having a range of proprietary fastener designs including MAG-FORM®, STRUX® and ACUPOINT® amongst others. The company constructed an advanced
manufacturing facility in Brazil and has expanded its manufacturing capability in Mexico. Group companies included CAMCAR, Ring Screw and MAPRI. In 2008 it reinforced its entry to the aerospace sector through the acquisition of Saturn Fasteners. Platinum Equity acquired Textron Fastening Systems in August 2006 for a reported US$673 million plus debts, rebranding the business as Acument Global Technologies. In 2010 Platinum Equity divested Acument's Avdel® and Global Electronics & Commercial businesses to Asia Trading Company Limited, owned indirectly by funds advised by CVC Asia Pacific Limited and Standard Chartered Private Equity Limited. This Asian headquartered business with extensive operations in Europe became Infastech, which was subsequently acquired in February 2013 by Stanley Black & Decker for US$850 million in cash.
FinnvedenBulten to concentrate on fasteners FinnvedenBulten AB has signed an agreement with Shiloh Industries Inc, a US supplier to the automotive industry and general industries, to sell the Finnveden Metal Structures (FMS) division.
T
he deal was expected to close on 30th June 2014 with the SEK 372 million (approximately 40.6 million euros) purchase price for all shares in FMS paid in cash. Tommy Andersson, current president of Bulten AB, will become president and CEO of FinnvedenBulten AB. Johan Westman, presently president and CEO of FinnvedenBulten AB, will take up a position in the executive management team of the Shiloh Group as head of the European operations with continued responsibility for FMS. “Through the sale of FMS, FinnvedenBulten’s business will be entirely focused on the fast growing and international fastener business. We see great opportunities for continued strong and sound growth. The financial position, that is considerably strengthened by today’s deal, creates better conditions to seize opportunities the coming years,” says Roger Holtback, chairman of the board of FinnvedenBulten. “Amid very tough competition, Bulten has managed to position itself as one of the three leading full service providers in Europe and we have seen very strong development in recent years. The new business signed in 2013 with an annual value of around SEK 500 million, as well as the planned production start in Russia in 2014 and extended possibilities in China, means that we expect to see considerable organic growth in the coming years,” says Tommy Andersson. The intention is also to change the name of the group from FinnvedenBulten AB to Bulten AB at an extraordinary general meeting.

NEWS Management and employees at loggerheads over future of Whitesell Germany A series of German media stories have revealed a deep schism between the IG Metal Union and Whitesell – the US group that purchased Ruia Global Fasteners (RGF) from administration in December 2013.
R
GF was previously Bauer & Schaurte, a 140-year-old fastener producer that became Acument GmbH. The company went into insolvency in August 2009 facing a 40 million euro loss as a result of the collapse of automotive demand during the financial crisis. In February 2011 the Indian Ruia Group acquired the business for an undisclosed figure, renaming it Ruia Global Fasteners AG. In 2012 RGF returned to insolvency amidst accusations from its works council that Ruia had not invested in its operations despite the company having a full order book. Whitesell is a privately held US family group, established in 1970, which has grown by acquisition to become a major manufacturer and distributor of metal formed and C-Class parts to automotive OEMs and tier suppliers, as well as to a wide spectrum of other engineered products markets. At the time of the Whitesell acquisition IG Metall was publicly sceptical about whether the company would receive the investment it said was needed and vocal about the risks to employment. A majority of employees signed a statement rejecting Whitesell as the new owner. The company has four plants in Beckingen, Neuwied, Neuss, and Schrozberg, employing around 1,300 people. At the beginning of June the Union organised a walk out and public rally in protest about feared job cuts. In a vociferous statement on its website IG Metall accused Whitesell of a series of failings, including lack of investment, loss of major contracts and "blackmailing" customers with damaging price increases and delivery conditions. The statement says: "The company is in massive danger and 1,300 jobs are at extreme risk." The Union concludes that the situation is worse than it predicted at the end of 2013 and demanded the withdrawal of Whitesell and a new "reputable owner". On 25th June Whitesell issued a statement, published in full by Hohenloher Tagblatt, which refuted the Union's claims. Whitesell maintains that major automotive accounts had made alternative sourcing arrangements during the second insolvency period and before its acquisition of the business. Other contracts, when analysed, were found to be at loss making prices necessitating the company to apply major price increases, many of which were not accepted by the customers. It also stated that the workforce uncertainty had undermined supplier and customer confidence, complicating the situation for Whitesell Germany. Whitesell said that despite enormous difficulties new long-term contracts have been concluded with large customers and concluded: "We are willing to invest in this company. We want to make it a world-class automotive supplier. Restructuring will unfortunately be difficult but it is the only way to save many jobs."

Acquisition expands Norm Civata’s range and capacity Turkey’s largest fastener producer, Norm Group, acquired Italian screw manufacturer – Derk SpA – at the beginning of 2014 and has now relocated production to its new facility at Manisa, Salihli – approximately 100km east of the Group’s other production operations in Izmir.
N
orm decided to make the acquisition in order to diversify its production range and further develop its capability to meet customers’ requirements. Based previously in Assago, Milan, Derk specialised in small screws for the automotive, home appliance and electronics, lighting and medical sectors. Throughout the transitional process Norm has maintained close contact with Derk’s customers and is already supplying their requirements. In addition to expanding its customer base Norm Group has gained know-how in small screw and stainless steel production – enhancing its already extensive technical and production capabilities. The acquisition has also brought Norm a substantially upgraded machine park. The Group has transferred 27 cold heading machines, 18 thread rollers, a heat treatment furnace and 3 self-drilling screw machines, altogether representing some 4,000 tonnes annual capacity. The equipment is currently being commissioned and is expected to be in full production in July. Additionally Norm has relocated three packaging machines and storage systems with 2,200 pallet capacity, as well as the necessary tooling. Norm chairman, Mr Fatih Uysal, commented: “The product groups Derk previously manufactured were the ones our existing customers were already purchasing. For a long time we have looked for the opportunity to enter these market segments. Acquisition of a technically well-regarded company with a strongly established customer portfolio presented a major advantage. Our common customers, who already have high levels of confidence in Norm Civata’s quality and service, have been quick to ask us to supply parts to them. We expect these sales to contribute approximately 4,000 tonnes additional turnover for the Norm Group.” The Norm Group currently has 1,250 employees and the addition of its new plant in Manisa, has taken the company’s annual production capacity to 85,000 tonnes in bolts, nuts and screws. www.norm-fasteners.com.tr

Trifast acquires Italian fastener manufacturer Trifast plc, the parent company of TR Fastenings, has acquired Viterie Italia Centrale Srl (VIC), a leading Italian manufacturer and distributor of fastening systems, for an aggregate consideration of 27 million euros.
T
rifast plc, the parent company of TR Fastenings, said the acquisition will form a key additional part of its future expansion by providing an additional manufacturing facility in Europe to complement the group's existing resources in Asia. Founded in 1964 by the Perini family, VIC predominantly manufactures and distributes fastening systems for the white goods industry, numbering most of the European major brands as customers, and has recently expanded into automotive lighting fastening components. VIC reported sales of 27 million euros in 2013 generating profit before tax of 5.4 million euros. VIC recorded sales growth of 7% and 16.75% in 2011 and 2012 respectively. An essential part of Trifast’s management growth strategy is to identify and selectively acquire profitable businesses, explained Malcolm Diamond, executive chairman: "This acquisition represents an excellent strategic fit for Trifast; VIC operates as a manufacturer of highly engineered parts mainly
to the domestic appliance industry, plus early development into automotive lighting components. This capability will enable its trading arm, TR Fastenings, to offer a wider range of threaded fasteners manufactured within the enlarged group's facilities to these industry sectors, which we consider to be strategic for TR's global aspirations." "VIC has a young, experienced and motivated management team, led by Carlo Perini. Their focus and continued improvement on customisation has allowed the business not only to keep up with output markets' technological development, but also to often act as an innovator, reinforcing its competitive positioning." Carlo Perini, who will remain with the business as managing director of VIC, commented: “The culture and ethos of the Trifast group of companies is very similar to our own and this step offers both companies an exciting opportunity to develop, exploiting the skills and leadership qualities of both VIC and TR.”

London Calling! The London Screw Company Ltd, amongst the oldest names in screw manufacturing, has reported new ownership.
E
stablished in 1870, the traditional West Midlands fastener manufacturing company was steered to success by Tom and Pat Flanagan through the tough times of the 1980s and 1990s creating “one of the best kept secret success stories of the millennium”. Tom and Pat have decided the time is right to start a well earned ‘second youth’ and have handed over the company to new owners, Richard and Heike Spence. Tom and Pat leave the company in a strong position ready to take advantage of the resurgence in interest in UK made products, and fuelled by the strengthening local and world economies. “This is a fantastic family run business, with the benefits of a good customer base established over many generations,” Richard Spence commented. “London is a classic niche player, supplying distributors ‘next day’ with products that Asian producers either don’t want to make or take months to deliver.” Richard added: “We have the business edge with tonnes of readily available stock such as metric/imperial allthreads, machine screws and hex bolts in a variety of steel and non-ferrous materials. We are ahead of the curve when it comes to fastener production coming back home! The secret is out!! The future for The London Screw Company looks bright in the Black Country...” www.londonscrew.co.uk

Star of the show Specialist fastener and fixing company Rapierstar Ltd exhibited at the UK window and door ‘FIT Show’ recently at the International Centre in Telford.
T
here is more to being a successful fastener distribution company than simply processing and dispatching orders and to show the wealth of innovations it provides, Rapierstar doubled the size of its stand for this year’s show. MyTrade TV news presenter Michelle Orpe took the opportunity to catch up with David Furness, managing director, interviewing him live on the Rapierstar stand. “At the heart of the business is a commitment to service,” explained David. “We go that extra mile to ensure window manufacturers and installers get the quality products they need, when they need them. Rapierstar is unique in providing window screws and fixings with CE Marking,c and standards are further supported by in-house product testing and control.” David added: “We have many enhancements that enable Rapierstar customers to get the maximum value from our products, including fixing systems, profile specific fixing manuals, bespoke screw kits and of course legendary technical back-up.” Bringing that added value to customers is even more evident with a new product that Rapierstar showcased at the FIT show this year. “Rapierstar Protect – ProShield™ is a water repellent masonry treatment that is quick and easy to apply. It penetrates
to provide invisible protection from damaging water ingress. As well as maintaining building structures, it has the added advantage of increasing the thermal efficiency of treated homes – at a fraction of the cost of more elaborate cladding solutions.” Rapierstar Protect will roll out an accredited installer scheme later this year and is actively recruiting competent companies to apply the ProShield™ products.

P E R S P E CT I V E by Phil Matten, executive editor, Fastener + Fixing Magazine
Phil Matten reflects on some of the key topics currently involving the fastener industry As you’ll already have seen the News pages are literally peppered with acquisition stories. There have been some remarkable shifts in the global fastener landscape over the last few weeks – a couple arguably on a tectonic scale.
I
visited Trifast a couple of days before we went to press and was fortunate to be able to spend some time with Carlo Perini, the managing director of TR’s latest acquisition, Viterie Italia Centrale (VIC). When the acquisition was announced it looked to be a particularly astute move for Trifast and my brief discussion with Carlo served only to further reinforce that impression. Our news report covers Trifast’s thoughts on the strategic value of acquiring VIC, which TR Europe managing director, Geoff Budd, enthusiastically reinforced during my visit. Talking with Carlo one could see very clearly how becoming part of the TR network will expand VIC’s opportunities to develop. Conversely there is no question about the expertise and capability the Italian company is bringing to the party. One comment from Carlo epitomised the mutual value of the deal: “Our cultures are very similar, our competences are complimentary.” There was evidently genuine excitement about the prospects and huge personal confidence in how the new relationship will benefit a business, which of course has grown up since 1963 as a family concern – confidence reflected, he shared with me, in his decision to take a significant personal shareholding in Trifast. I’m hoping it won’t be too long before we take up Carlo’s invitation to visit the plant and look in real detail at VIC’s capabilities and also some of the clearly very innovative approaches to working with its customers. There was a stark contrast between the Trifast story and the news that emerged from Turkey’s Norm Group about its acquisition of Derk SpA. Whereas Trifast is clearly committed to not just maintaining but developing VIC’s manufacturing capabilities in Fabriano – substantial investment I am told is already in the pipeline – Norm tell us it has virtually completed the absorption of all of Derk’s production equipment into its new plant in Salihli, Turkey, adding around 5,000 tonnes new capacity to the Group’s already substantial capabilities. Norm is clear that it has acquired substantial technology and know-how. It’s also confident that it is already working closely with former Derk clients to ensure continuity of supply. The relationship between acquirer and acquired is clearly going to be of very significant interest to the stakeholders in both PMC’s acquisition of Nedschroef and Fontana’s acquisition of Acument Global Technologies. Not surprisingly there were immediate hints of disquiet over Chinese ownership of a strategic supplier to major European OEMs and it’s clear from Nedschroef and PMC statements that the management was alert from the beginning about the need to assuage doubts over this score. That’s not going to be easy, one suspects, and will take some time. Of course, it’s not just going to be about what happens in Europe, the deal offers some fascinating scenarios for Nedchroef’s development in China, where Chinese ownership surely will represent a massive ‘edge’. The assimilation of Acument into Fontana’s global strategy looks somewhat more straightforward; although my guess is when I am in the States shortly I’ll still hear some concerns about European ownership of a major US fastener supplier. As always, I’ll let you know.

Hagan: Fastener acquisitions at strong pace during 2013 Deal making activity in the global fastener industry continued at a strong pace during 2013, Consultant Richard Hagan summarised.
T
he president of Pinnacle Capital Corporation found: “By our count, there were a total of 29 fastener company acquisitions completed worldwide last year. That number is closely comparable to the total of 31 fastener deals completed during 2012 and the 29 fastener deals completed during 2011.” Thus far in 2014, “there has not been enough fastener deals completed to keep pace with the last three years,” Hagan observed of acquisitions through April. “However, we do not anticipate a significant slowdown in deal activity. There are numerous fastener company transactions pending and in-process at this time and we believe the appetite for deals by both buyers and sellers is healthy.”
The top ten fastener company acquisitions of 2013 (Arranged in chronological order) Ohio based Hillman Companies Inc purchased H. Paulin & Co Limited of Canada. Stanley Black & Decker Inc of Connecticut purchased Infastech Limited of Hong Kong. Elgin Fastener Group LLC of Indiana purchased Vegas Fastener Manufacturing of Nevada. MSC Industrial Direct Co Inc of New York purchased the Barnes Distribution business unit of Barnes Group Inc. EFC International Inc of Missouri was recapitalized by Quad-C Management Inc. Carlson Systems Holdings Inc of Nebraska purchased Western Tool Supply of Oregon. Park-Ohio purchased Henry Halstead Limited of England. Brighton-Best International Inc of Taiwan purchased Southern California based Porteous Fastener Company. TriMas Corporation of Michigan purchased Mac Fasteners Inc of Kansas. Oregon based Precision Castparts Corp purchased Permaswage SAS of Southern California. US fastener figures reveal modest Q1 growth US fastener exports and imports achieved modest growth in the opening quarter of 2014.
E
xports of US fasteners rose 5.5% during the first three months of the year, according to data released by the US Census Bureau. Imports fared better, with fastener imports to the US growing 7.25% during Q1. Those figures were boosted by solid gains during March. US fastener exports of iron and steel fasteners (HTS Code: 7318) increased 7% to US$320.8 million in March, boosted by rising demand from Mexico and China, Zepol reports. The top five consumers of US fastener exports in March were Mexico (up 7% month-to-month to US$100.2 million); Canada (up 1.7% to US$90.7 million); the UK (down 7.6% to US$14.5 million); China (up 11.9% to US$13.2 million); and Germany (up 6.8% to US$9.9 million), according to Zepol. Imports of iron and steel fasteners (HTS Code: 7318)
26
to the US also increased in March, growing 8% to US$387.3 million despite value gains from Taiwan, Japan, Germany and Canada, according to data released by the US Census Bureau. The top five countries importing fasteners to the US during March were Taiwan (up 9.3% month-to-month to US$118.9 million); China (down 15.6% to US$67.3 million); Japan (up 11.1% to US$61.8 million); Germany (up 17.3% to US$27.1 million); and Canada (up 4% to US$26.1 million), Zepol reports. In 2013 US fastener exports grew 9.1% to US$3.6 billion, while fastener imports fell 2.2% to US$4.49 billion. Data was derived from Zepol's TradeView, using US import and export trade data released by the US Census Bureau in the Merchandise Trade dataset.

9th IFI Standards edition includes changes in 49 of 99 fastener standards It started with a phone call to the director of engineering technology at the Industrial Fasteners Institute. “I can find the information on NE style nylon lock nuts, but where do I find the information on NTE style lock nuts…” the caller asked Joe Greenslade.
G
reenslade found the caller was correct. ASME B18.16.6 contained only information on one of the seven styles of nylon insert lock nuts. A revision of B18.16.6 was soon undertaken. The result was an expansion of the standard to include all available styles of nylon insert and allmetal lock nuts and the replacement of IFI 100/107 in early 2014. The extensive revision of B18.16.6 is one example of changes in 49 of the 99 fastener standards in the upcoming 9th edition of the IFI’s Inch Fastener Standards. The new text will be published by July 2014. When Greenslade gets a technical question separately from multiple users, it is a clue to a standards problem. From there it may take three or four years for the appropriate committees to find a resolution. Greenslade told GlobalFastenerNews.com that most of the changes in the 9th edition are minor, “but significant enough to be made.” For example, “the chemical requirements for SAE J429, grade 8, have been tweaked to align it with ISO 898-1 property class 10.9 materials so producers can make both inch and metric fasteners from the same materials, simplifying producers raw material inventories,” he explained. The IFI used to update the Standards every decade or so. However, changes in technology mean both more changes in fasteners, and being easier to update the text. The 1,146 page
8th edition was published in 2011. Just a decade ago, each new edition of the IFI’s Standards required three people and took years to compile and prepare for publication. Today’s technology enables small print runs, allowing more frequent updating without needing to scrap huge quantities of left over books as in the past. Now the master version is digitally updated perpetually. The 2014 Standards is ready to print except for a few impending standards committee decisions, Greenslade said. It will cost US$345. The 9th edition will again be available in both the printed and the multi-user digital version. Greenslade uses the digital edition for his own searches. “Information is so much easier to find; data to share with others by ‘snipping’,” he explains. Subscriptions to the online version IFI Technology Connection are accelerating and Greenslade predicts that by 2020 the IFI book will only be available as a digital edition. The Technology Connection has both inch and metric fastener standards online in one location. “Users find all relevant information on a given fastener in seconds using pull down menus, in addition to having many other technical tools and resources available,” Greenslade explained. Standards data is updated immediately and thus provides the users with the latest information. www.indfast.org
Titanium fastener producer relocates Fastener manufacturer Allied Titanium Inc has moved its western headquarters to Sequim, WA. Founded in 2007, Allied Titanium is headquartered in Delaware with manufacturing facilities in China. The company offers over 93,000 different products.
C
hristopher Greimes, CEO of Allied Titanium, stated: "One of the big benefits of locating in Sequim is that the city is on the forefront of sustainability. Titanium is the ultimate green material and we felt we would fit right in, building a state of the art factory in harmony with the Earth.” In 2012, Allied Titanium leased a 20 acre farm in Sequim to use as a staging area for the future establishment of the operation. It moved accounting, upper management and shipping and receiving to the property. In December 2013, Allied Titanium purchased 5.5 acres at 1400 E, Washington Street in Sequim. Since then the company has moved its sales team and is in the process of moving shipping and receiving, as well as setting up the fabrication shop, which will support the construction and maintenance of a new factory at that location. Greimes said his company settled on Sequim for many reasons, including: Affordable electrical capacity; high internet
28
speed; employable workforce; great education system; clean water and the reuse water available for industrial use; low crime; affordable land and cost of living; and close proximity to a port. Allied Titanium plans to manufacture products in Sequim that meet or beat the current costs of manufacturing in China. The factory will use cutting edge technology and robotics and employ between 50 to 150 workers. Marine products will be fabricated using high-speed robotic water jet machines and wire-fed tig welders. Grade 5 titanium fasteners can be produced at high-speed on automatic machines. Until recently the use of titanium was limited due to the expense of materials and the high cost of refining. As steel prices rise and smelting technology advances, titanium becomes a more affordable option for the military and marine and aerospace industries. "Operating our facility in China opened our eyes to the positive impact that affordable titanium is having on China," Greimes said.

Thousands of fastener companies noted in FIN’s Fastener History Fastener Industry News marked its 35th anniversary by reaching 500 stories posted in its Fastener History section on GlobalFastenerNews.com
T
he online Fastener History section provides a glimpse into what was lost in the 2003 Southern California wildfire that destroyed Mel Kirsner’s Fastener Museum. Each month of the 1997 FIN Calendar featured quotes from books and catalogs collected by Kirsner. The collection included such items as an 1892 catalogue from Pawtucket Manufacturing Co and a book, ‘History of the Bolt & Nut Industry’, written by W.R. Wilbur in 1905. In April 1997, the FIN Calendar summarised Archimedes being credited for discovery of the screw thread, and in May of that year the subject was the ‘First method of threading a screw’. Fastener History includes key fastener European executives: FIN’s 1997 interview with Reinhold Würth in Germany is just one of many industry leaders who have shared the secrets of their success. Among the notables: 1997 FIN – EIFI’s Lench: ‘Europe concerned about dumping of cheap imports’; 2002 FIN – Heinrich Bossard: ‘Customer, not competition, drives business’; 2007 FIN – EIFI’s Micheau: ‘Seek common ground’; 2013 FIN – Lederer: ‘Distributors seek more influence in EU policy’. A 1983 FIN article reported on 10 fastener associations representing 1,000 companies holding a networking meeting. Participants rated new country-of-origin marking requirements as the most important problem facing fastener distributors. The articles posted in Fastener History are from the three and a half decades covering the industry’s news. The industry’s largest gatherings are described through the years: 2009 FIN – ‘First fastener fair held in 1995 in England’; 2009 FIN – ‘‘World’s Largest’ Title Goes to Fastener Fair Stuttgart’; 2010 FIN – ‘International show organizer Mack Brooks acquires Fastener Fair’. In a 2002 FIN interview, Jim Bannister of the National Industrial Fastener Show & Conference recalled the steps to
the first show in 1981 in Columbus, OH: ‘How the fastener industry discovered Columbus’. The start of the western version is explained in a 1997 FIN article headlined: ‘Las Vegas Show gamble pays off’. A succinct 20-year history of the fastener industry was written by FIN founder, first publisher and editor Dick Callahan in 1999 for FIN’s 20th anniversary. The Fastener History section offers education for those entering the fastener industry. A sampling of articles for new recruits includes: 2000 FIN – ‘Book Review: Historical search for the father of the screw’; 1997 FIN – ‘From cradle to grave – the fasteners in your life’; 1998 FIN – ‘The ubiquitous A325’; and 1994 FIN – ‘Why 99.9% accuracy fails in quality measurement’. For the ultimate technical knowledge, the Industrial Fasteners Institute's Joe Greenslade in 1997 offered a list of required fastener reference manuals. There is a 2013 update from Greenslade with the original 1997 article. News continues to become Fastener History: Weather was a big issue in the US during the early months of 2014 as the Polar Vortex became the latest storm to disrupt the fastener industry. Among previous weather articles in Fastener History are the ice storms that closed Infasco in Canada for a month in 1998; the 1994 typhoon in Taiwan; and Super Storm Sandy in 2012. Also providing history is the 1979 through 2013 Obituaries section on GlobalFastenerNews.com. The fastener stories of more than 250 people – from age 2 to 101 also add to industry history. More FIN articles – which over the decades take on a historical role instead of news – since the newsletter was first published July 10 1979, will continue to be added to the Fastener History section on GlobalFastenerNews.com.

Significant advances at Severstal-metiz plants The Severstal-metiz Group of factories has installed new equipment for the manufacture of large diameter fasteners, in order to meet increasing demand from construction projects preparing for the 2018 Football World Cup.
F
asteners are being produced on a new production line purchased from a Belgian fastener machinery supplier. The first shipments of fasteners made on the new equipment have already been delivered to clients. The project started with the installation of a hot heading press for nuts and was completed with the installation of three nut-tapping lines. In addition to increase output volume of large diameter products the company aims to manufacture new types of fasteners and improve the general efficiency of its equipment. Alexander Shevelev, general director of Severstal-metiz, commented: “Demand for large fasteners will grow because of the preparation for the Football World Cup in 2018, so we plan to increase our presence in the market for construction products. Fastener manufacturing is a highly competitive sector, which is why we are constantly developing and perfecting all aspects of our activity. In this case modernisation of our manufacturing capabilities is a logical step in strengthening our position in the market.” Severstal-metiz has also expanded its range of welded connectors, manufacturing shear connectors to a new size standard. Pilot lots of 16mm diameter connectors in 100mm and 150mm lengths passed control tests in the presence of a bridge inspector at the Group’s Oryol laboratory before being shipped to the client. Previously Severstal-metiz had supplied 22mm diameter connectors used on various projects including construction of the Podolsko-Voskresenskiy bridge in Kyiv, and a junction of the M10 highway between Pushkino and Kolpino. Futher expansion of the shear connectors range used in civil buildings will be supported by development of new lengths and diameters. Supply of the connectors became possible after they successfully passed necessary tests in the laboratory of the E.O.

Paton Institute of Electric Welding at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, and also at the Voronezh Research Center for Bridges. Severstal-metiz was the first Russian producer to begin making shear connectors for steel reinforced bridges and is currently unique in Russia and the CIS in having this capability. Alexander Shevelev said: “Now our possibilities regarding production engineering and equipment allow us to constantly expand our range of products, manufacturing all new standard sizes as well as special designs.” The Group has also supplied grade 12.9 high-strength fasteners for the CSKA stadium in Moscow. Specialists at the company developed new production capabilities to heat treat a special grade of material, which has provided fasteners with the necessary strength requirements. Severstal-metiz is currently the only fastener maker producing industrial volumes of strength class 12.9 fasteners conforming to GOST P 52644−52646−2006 in the Russian Federation. The first batch of the higher strength fasteners were supplied for installation at a stadium being constructed in Tyumen. Further shipments were made in May for the CSKA stadium in Moscow and more are planned for other infrastructure projects. The Severstal-metiz Orel plant is able to manufacture fasteners in various strength classes and with a range of coatings – including galvanic zinc, thermodiffusion zinc and hot dipped galvanised – at various thicknesses to meet customer requirements. High-strength fasteners in accordance with GOST P 52644−52646−2006 have already been supplied for several large sporting structures including the Olympic arenas and the Formula 1 circuit in Sochi, as well as the stadiums of ‘Zenith’ in St. Peterburg and ‘Spartak’ in Moscow.

Taiwan to audit fastener certificates of origin The International Trade Bureau of the Taiwanese Ministry of Economic Affairs has announced that from 21st July measures will be introduced to strictly audit the issuance of certificates of origin for fasteners exported to the EU.
F
astener World magazine reports that the new measures are being introduced to prevent fraudulent labeling of Chinese made products as originating in Taiwan. The new measure appears to be a reaction to requests from European distribution organisations and Taiwanese fastener associations for Taiwanese authorities to take concrete action to stem suspected transshipment of Chinese originated fasteners via the country to European importers seeking to evade EU anti-dumping duties. Both Taiwanese fastener associations have been adamant that their members and legitimate Taiwanese factories are not involved in circumvention. Chinese originated fasteners are believed to have been entering Taiwan illegally under fraudulent TARIC codes before being re-exported to the EU.

Chun Yu targets Chinese high-speed rail
Using warm forging technology U-Chance has successfully developed a series of magnesium alloy screws, as well as 7075 high strength aluminium alloy screws.
hun Yu vice general manager told Fastener World the company now aims to win a share of the fastener demand for China’s high-speed rail programme. Chun Yu already has a track record for supplying prestige projects, as well as power generation plants and Taiwan’s railway and MRT.
T
he magnesium alloy screws are warm forged with adjustments made during forming to achieve the temperature needed to shape the alloy, Fastener World Magazine reports. Magnesium alloy screws are almost one sixth the weight of a conventional steel screw and offer benefits over plastic screws, including resistance to cracking and compatibility with other magnesium components, for example on bicycles. U-Chance aims to promote its capability to the European aerospace market. China Steel Corporation’s introduction of titanium wire to its range has further facilitated the company’s development of exotic alloy fasteners.
Gem-Year entering Chinese hardware market Gem-Year told Fastener World it has entered the Chinese domestic hardware market by introducing production of pneumatic tools, power tools and abrasives.
T
he three year strategy will involve 30% own produced product and 70% factored in from other manufacturers. Gem-Year plans joint ventures with existing Chinese retailers, as well as the potential to set up its own outlets or franchises with the objective of establishing 1,000 outlets in the first year. Gem-Year says it will also establish an e-commerce platform expected to be operational by end 2015. So far Gem-Year has established contracts with 60 hardware outlets.

NR-12: Medicine or poison? The Brazilian Ministry of Labour and Employment has Rule Nº 12, commonly known as NR-12, designed to regulate safety at work. Since 2010 the number of NR-12 provisions that have to be met by manufacturers and users have jumped from 40 to 340 – causing more trouble than solutions.
R
ecently ‘Indústria e Competitividade’, the official magazine of the Federation of Manufacturers of Santa Catarina state published a report about Ciser, in which Brazil’s largest fastener company showed the difficulties it was experiencing in adapting to this “regulatory overdose”. Facing an amazing 850% increase in its total obligations any company around the world would, obviously, have major problems in adaptation – something that happened with Ciser, which had to make many rapid changes to its wire drawing machinery amongst many others. Ciser produces more than 6,000 tonnes per month, divided between 27,000 different kinds of fasteners. The company was founded in 1959 and has never had accidents involving the wire drawing section.
However, the historic security procedures adopted by the company failed to convince an inspection from the Brazilian Ministry, which saw "serious and imminent risk" of accidents in industry and banned the use of seven of the ten wire drawing machines in operation. Left without any alternative Ciser has had to carry out adaptations to machinery and processes costing more than US$500,000. Furthermore, during ten months of drawing machine downtime, the company had to spend a lot of money to buy specific diameters of wire rod at substantially higher cost than it could produce within its own plant and suffer a 30% reduction in productivity. The problem was not unique to wire drawing. It extended to some 700 other machines including two latest generation, German made, automatic presses, which were also The proposals for revision of NR-12: considered dangerous during Temporary cut of obligations for new and used machinery. the inspections. Leasing for cars again As everybody knows, leasing is a simplified system of credit that works like a rental but with an option to purchase the asset at the end of the payment installments. Its low risk makes this financing cost-effective and attractive to customers.
I
n Brazil this system was ‘hibernated’ years ago for a series of until now unresolved issues, where the financial institutions found themselves at risk and liable for fines or accidents caused by their customers. This legal uncertainty is now coming to an end and the Supreme Court recently resolved the disputes. For banks this form of financing reduces the risk of default from financing of a car, retaining title to it, and speeding up the process of recovery if that proves necessary. For fastener companies that provides a direct benefit but also the significant indirect benefit in Brazil of increasing sales in the automotive market.

MEKR’S – taking stock MEKR’S s.r.o is a Czech wholesaler of fasteners, anchor technology, hydraulic systems, and welding equipment – providing business services to a variety of industries including mechanical and electrical engineering, metallurgy, and the automotive industry.
B
ased in Úpice, MEKR’S has 40,000 fasteners in stock that comply with DIN, ISO and CSN standards, in a wide selection of diameters, materials, and surface finishes. It also supplies items made according to customers’ drawings. Here Fastener + Fixing Magazine interviews Jan Melichar, owner of MEKR’S s.r.o, to find out more about the Czech wholesaler and the company’s plans for the future.
Can you tell us about the history of MEKR’S – when the company was established and the key points in its development? “MEKR’S was established in 1994 as a small fastening material shop in Úpice. The first milestone for the company was when it started working with another Czech company, Metalvis s.r.o, providing us with new sales opportunities away from Ferona AS – the then dominant fastener distributor.
“ Every day we are taking small steps forward, to allow us to grow and offer more options and opportunities for our customers.” 40
Fastener + Fixing Magazine • Issue 88 July 2014
This saw us go through a period of expansion, moving to larger and larger warehouse facilities, whilst at the same time expanding our product range. The next big milestone was the decision to start buying from fastener suppliers in the European Union and the subsequent decision to import fastener materials from south east Asia. This decision helped us develop both in the Czech market and in foreign markets. Gradual investments followed to further continue the company's development, including the launch of a new e-shop and the introduction of a Kanban service via barcode readers.”
Why should customers choose MEKR’S for fasteners and anchoring material? “There are a number of reasons why customers should choose MEKR’S. First of all, we have got a wide range of products in stock and we are constantly expanding that range, so that we can offer customers the highest possible level of service. Also, everyone working for the company treats our customers as individuals and strives to find joint solutions to various situations, ensuring mutual satisfaction. Thanks to our company's capabilities, we are also able to provide customers with high levels of customer service, whilst supporting our business partners in their growth. The company's main philosophy has always been to keep the widest possible range in stock, to maintain and constantly develop high-quality delivery services and customer care, and to ensure that we continuously supply high-quality fastening material. At MEKR’S we also remember that we won't achieve anything or be perceived as a successful overall player unless we work together with our suppliers and customers.”
What products can you offer customers and how do you ensure the quality of the product? “We can offer our customers a wide range of fastening material, from standard to customised items. Products include
nails, nuts, bolts, screws, threaded inserts, spring locks, pivot pins, dowel pins, caps, rivets, O rings, washers, circlips and threaded bar. We also offer anchoring material – such as wall plugs, chemical anchors, steel anchors and anchor footings – as well as hydraulic fittings and welding machines and accessories. We guarantee the quality of the material we provide through various monitoring and checking steps upon receipt of goods, ensuring that all the products we stock are rigorously inspected. One of the resources that helps us is our laboratory, which we are continuing to perfect via gradual investments.”
How does MEKR’S ensure a quality service to customers? “In terms of purchasing, we do so through finding new suppliers who satisfy the production quality criteria and ensure we offer our customers high-quality after sales service. In terms of sales, we do so through daily communication with our customers, looking for and proposing new solutions to improve customer care levels and consolidation of our relations – on both a business and personal level. Investments in fitting out our facilities, in hardware, in cutting edge technology and in human resources, form an integral part of ensuring high-quality services. For instance, for customers who require a continuous supply of fastening material, while reducing inventory, we are able to offer a Kanban system – with each system tailor-made to the customer’s specific requirements. The system works on the basis of operational and safety stocks. The operational supplies are stored in containers (marked by label, card, barcode) from which the fastening material is taken directly to the production process. Safety stocks are held at the supplier’s facility. Continuous refilling of the containers is ensured at regular intervals by the customer’s employees or directly by the supplier. Based on information provided by the customer, we draft the optimal distribution of stock, which we regularly evaluate and optimise.”
“ The company’s main philosophy has always been to keep the widest possible range in stock…”
What plans does MEKR’S have for the future? “Our company's capabilities are founded on the experience we have gained and the way we have progressively built up the business. Every day we are taking small steps forward, to allow us to grow and offer more options and opportunities for our customers. We are hoping to finish building our new logistics facilities as soon as possible and apply an effective warehouse management system. We would also like to finish development of our laboratory as soon as possible, which will enable us to further focus on improving the quality of the goods we receive. With regard to our business plans, we are keen to continue consolidating our position in the Czech and Slovak markets, whilst increasing exports as a share of the company's overall sales. However, the whole house could come tumbling down because of steps brought in by the EU. The EU's destructive decisions with the introduction of anti-dumping measures on imports of fastening material from various countries makes you wonder whether it is worth continuing to do business in this field. Through just one of their decisions all of our day-to-day efforts can be undone and a lot of people may lose their jobs as a result.” www.mekrs.com

St. Petersburg to host Fastener Fair Russia 2015 The new ExpoForum in St. Petersburg will be the venue for next year’s Fastener Fair Russia exhibition. The event will take place in the city from 24th – 26th March 2015, bringing the latest in fastener and fixing technology to the heart of the country’s quickest growing industrial region.
A
longside its traditional shipbuilding prowess, the St. Petersburg area is now acknowledged as a major centre for automotive production. Ford, General Motors, Hyundai, Nissan and Toyota are among global companies that have established vehicle manufacturing plants there, and output of new cars is scheduled to reach over 1 million annually by 2018. The region is also experiencing strong growth in emerging sectors including aerospace, optical, IT, electronics and environmental industries. As a consequence, demand for fasteners and fixings is set to grow significantly. Olivia Griscelli, exhibition director at Mack Brooks Exhibitions, said: “We believe that locating Fastener Fair Russia 2015 at the heart of such an important manufacturing region, and in a brand new venue, will provide a great opportunity for fastener and fixing systems suppliers to present their products to these key market sectors.” Organised by Restec-Brooks, a joint venture between Mack Brooks Exhibitions and its Russian partner Restec Exhibition Company, this will be the country’s third Fastener Fair show. Managers, engineers and buyers from 205 cities and 25 countries visited the most recent event, held in Moscow in May this year. The show in Moscow attracted 121 leading companies from 19 countries. Participants included German firms Dresselhaus Gmbh & Co – supplier of screws and fastening parts, and E.U.R.O Tec – showcasing fasteners for the construction industry, while from Italy bolts and screws supplier Ambrovit Srl and rivet specialist SARIV Srl took part. Clamping products were presented by Murray Corporation from the US and Turkish firm Tork Auto, and major Russian companies such as Severstal-hardware and MMK-hardware also had stands at the show. Market opportunities for suppliers of fastener and fixing products in Russia were brought into sharp focus by Boris Yarantsev, general director of Prommetiz Association of hardware producers, speaking during a Round Table session at the show. “The import of metalwork to Russia is insignificant at present – it is around 12% of the total figure. However, this does not apply to fasteners, because the import share here is 50%," he said. Exhibitors are being offered special ‘Early Bird’ discount rates if they book a stand at Fastener Fair Russia 2015 before 1st November 2014. www.fastenerfair.com/russia

Pühl – pressing ahead Through a combination of state of the art production equipment, an unwavering commitment to quality, and a dedication to a complete customer service, Adolf Pühl GmbH & Co KG has established itself as a leading manufacturer of standard and non-standard flat washers and pressings.
F
ounded in 1897, Adolf Pühl originally focused on the production of wood screws, hinges, gib keys and split pins according to DIN 94 – the company still supplies the split pins today. In the 1960s the company changed its production range completely to specialise in DIN washers and pressings. Since this decision Pühl has developed market recognition of its product range and quality – firstly in Germany, before moving further into Europe, until finally establishing a global presence; all the time meeting the challenges of international competition. Based in Plettenberg in the heartland of Germany’s Sauerland (60km south of Dortmund), Adolf Pühl’s premises stretches along the main road through the town, covering an area of almost 30,000m2. Inside, approximately 25 modern high-speed eccentric and hydraulic presses have an output of more than 25,000 tonnes of washers and pressings per annum. Pühl offers a full range of capabilities, ranging from 0.5mm thick washers – produced with a stamping force of 125 tonnes – up to 12mm thick washers (with thicker possible) – formed with an impressive stamping force of 1,000 tonnes. Its product range includes high tensile washers such as EN 14399-6, BS 4395 and ASTM F436, conical spring washers to DIN 6796, as well as almost all types of other flat washers according to DIN or ISO specifications, as well as French (NFE), British (BS), Italian (UNI) or Scandinavian norms. Pühl recently increased the production of captive washers for screw manufacturers, which can be assembled during the screw manufacturing process. Pühl also offers technical support to ensure the correct choice of washer material. “We are quite unique in being able to offer a very wide range of products,” says Christoph Schulte, managing director at Adolf Pühl. “From the very small to the very big we can supply a whole range of washers, meaning that we can be very flexible when answering our customers’ needs.” Adolf Pühl delivers its products to wholesalers European wide and to customers in a

variety of markets, including wind energy, railway, agriculture, steel building, construction, trucks, automotive, and traffic engineering. A key feature of Pühl’s flexibility is its commitment to continuously investing in production equipment, logistics, and internal infrastructure, to stay competitive and to maintain the right capacities for its customers’ requirements.
In combination with introducing the latest production equipment and technology, a key aspect to Pühl’s service is its focus on quality. The company’s quality department includes spectral chemical analysis, hardness checking (HV, HB, HRC), surface control and high-speed inspection systems. “Everything you should have for good quality insurance as a manufacturer,” states Christoph. “When it comes to quality control we don’t see it as a requirement but as the only way to produce washers.” Pühl product quality is certified according to EN/ISO 9001:2008 and ISO 14001. “An important sign of quality for our customers is that all our products are ‘Made in Germany’, which is a real quality guarantee that only the highest standards are acceptable,” says Christoph. “As a company we focus on sustainable customer value and offering the customer a reliable, quality product, as well as an excellent service and first class delivery.” www.puehl.de

High-quality disc springs For over 50 years, Mubea Tellefedern GmbH has specialised in the production of high-quality disc springs, all of which are ‘Made in Germany’. Through its product innovations and high manufacturing penetration, the company says it has set the standards for superior quality and economic efficiency.
O
ver 400 sizes according to DIN 2093 and Mubea’s in-house standard can be delivered from its stores. Further proof of the high standard that Mubea sets for its products is the development and construction of complex tools for sophisticated disc springs made to customer requirements – all of which are manufactured in Mubea’s own tool construction section. As the manufacturing process takes place entirely in-house, Mubea has been able to expand on DIN 2093 and define additional manufacturing steps by the term – Mubea’s in-house standard. This means, for instance, that the lifetime of Mubea disc springs are significantly increased through standardised shot blasting. Another innovative development from Mubea is the generation 2 disc spring that the company introduced several years ago. By using a special manufacturing process, the lifetime of the disc can be increased by a factor of 10 compared to shot blasted discs. For the most part, disc springs manufactured by Mubea are designed and optimised according to customer specific requirements. Design programs that have been developed by Mubea can precisely calculate the best disc solution for each
application. Mubea provides its customers with a calculation program for the preliminary design of individual disc springs. Furthermore, force/path diagrams for all standard disc springs are reproduced in the Mubea disc spring handbook. Because they are specially produced, Mubea disc springs can be found in the most diverse industrial areas, but mainly where strict safety requirements need to be fulfilled, even in the face of challenging underlying conditions. Examples are their use in satellites, in safety valves for deep sea oil platforms, in power station security zones, in securing buildings against earthquakes, and in safety brakes for the most diverse applications. Material analyses, internal stress measurements, corrosion and crack detection tests (not only as they occur during the prototype phase) are performed in Mubea’s own laboratories. For producing prototypes, Mubea has a sample production section with comprehensive know-how. This enables the manufacture of complex, close tolerance, springs. Plants from the serial production process are often used to make prototypes – even at this early stage, knowledge can already be gained for the later serial production process.

On the path to success E.U.R.O Tec GmbH is a creator of fastening technology and has become renowned for its ability to provide innovative products, whilst delivering a high-quality service. The company has also taken the next step in its development by starting production at its German headquarters.
E
stablished in 1999, E.U.R.O Tec experienced substantial growth as it built its reputation within the fastener market – benefiting from being able to react to market trends and demands by quickly introducing new fastening products and ranges. Due to its rapid expansion, the company extended its warehouse and offices at the end of 2009 – doubling the available pallet spacing to over 11,500 pallets. In 2012, after continuing to regularly introduce new products, E.U.R.O Tec decided to expand again by adding a new production building. The new production facility was completed at the end of 2012 and the company started production using customised machinery at the end of Q1 2013. “The customised machinery combines the capabilities of three or four machines into one customised machine,” explains Peter Beckmann, sales and marketing manager at E.U.R.O Tec. “The wire enters the machine on one side and the screw comes out completed on the other side. Each step on the machine involves different processes – the cutting of the wire; the head being punched; the recess being punched; and finally the threads being added.” Peter continues: “Because we have one machine that carries out all the steps, it has helped us to reduce the amount of time needed to produce screws. The customised machinery can be controlled by one person, enabling us to keep costs as economical as possible and benefit from producing part of our range with the ‘Made in Germany’ guarantee.” For the moment E.U.R.O Tec is focusing on manufacturing its 8mm – 10mm wood construction screws, but will be looking to expand its capabilities in the future. “We are still working with our existing production partners for the majority of our range and will only be focusing on the larger wood construction screws in Hagen. The reason for this is because our larger screw range is the most sensitive when hardening and
54
Fastener + Fixing Magazine • Issue 88 July 2014
galvanising – due to their length – and therefore have very high requirements,” mentions Peter. “By moving the production to Germany we are able to guarantee these requirements are met and that we produce to the highest quality.” An additional benefit of E.U.R.O Tec moving part of its production to Germany was that it offers the company more independence when dealing with new orders. “We realised that we could save costs and production time by producing specific parts in Germany,” says Peter. “For instance, we do not have to ship the products from other parts of the world, which can sometimes take up to 16 weeks to arrive in Hagen. Add to this the increasing costs of shipping due to the rising costs of energy and the prospect of moving production to Germany became more viable.” Peter adds: “In Hagen we save energy costs, we are more flexible and we can be more confident in the treatment of the screws. The investment in the customised machinery was significant, but we are thinking of adding further machinery over the coming years. When we built the production facility we took into consideration the possibility of expanding our production capabilities so there is plenty of space.” In 15 years E.U.R.O Tec has seen impressive expansion as the company has relentlessly created products that provide a unique solution for applications, using a simple design – for convenient and easy application. The company’s ability to spot growth markets and quickly establish a range of suitable products, shows its flexibility to customer demands and market trends. Now with the capability to produce a range of its products at its Hagen headquarters, E.U.R.O Tec is ready for the next step of its evolution. Peter concludes: “Through a mixture of personal contact with customers, innovative design power within the company, and the quality of our service and products, we will continue on our path to success.” www.e-u-r-o-tec.de

Committed to anchoring technology Metall-Kunststoff-Technik GmbH & Co KG (MKT), a manufacturer of anchoring technology, produces products of the highest quality, whilst offering consistent reliability.
E
stablished in 1990, MKT supplies a comprehensive range of standard anchor systems, as well as tailor-made anchor solutions for small or large scale applications. Based in Germany’s Rheinland-Pfalz region, MKT has progressively extended its production facility over the years so that it can continue to provide a reliable base for the business. The company now has four production and logistics halls in Weilerbach, as well as a sister company – MKT Fastening LLC – that has its own production facility in Arkansas, USA, and services the requirements of the North American construction sector. MKT has a wide range of machining capability including three Nedschroef boltmaker machines that are capable of producing bolts from M5 – M20 in one operation. The maximum wire diameter, depending on material and product,
58
ranges from 6mm – 22mm, with the machine producing 180 pieces per minute. It can also produce a thread length from 80mm up to 130mm. MKT also has an automatic line that was custom designed and produced specifically for the assembly (in sets of four) of MKT’s wedge anchors. The automatic line includes a series of inspection systems, including confirming the orientation of each component, checking accurate assembly, before packing into boxes. “The automatic line has had a major impact on our production speeds, as well as improving our efficiency,” explains Stefan Weustenhagen, product manager at MKT. “Although it works at the same speed as our previous machines, it can assemble four anchors at a time. This means that we have been able to streamline the amount of machinery needed for the production of

Owlett-Jaton announces distribution agreement with PennEngineering® Owlett-Jaton, a UK supplier of fasteners and fixings to the distributor and merchant trade, has added to its expanding portfolio of products by announcing a distribution agreement with PennEngineering® to distribute the PEM® brand of products in the UK – supported by the launch of its new PEM® brand self-clinch fasteners catalogue.
F
ollowing on from its comprehensive brochure of its products range – ‘The Catalogue’ – Owlett-Jaton has teamed up with PennEngineering® to create a core product list of PEM® brand self-clinching fasteners. PEM brand fasteners utilise self-clinching, broaching, flaring, surface mount or weld technology to provide strong, reusable, and permanent threads and mounting points in thin sheet metal or printed circuit board materials. Self-clinching fasteners provide strong threads or attachment in metal as thin as 0.5mm. They can be installed using the PEMSERTER® press system or any parallel acting squeezing force. PEMSERTER presses are designed to safely, reliably, accurately, and quickly install PEM fasteners. The new Owlett-Jaton catalogue will include a selection of PEM products including the especially hardened self-clinching Type SP nuts for installation into stainless steel sheets. Other products in the catalogue include the S, SS, CLS and CLSS classification of self-clinching nuts, which provide load-bearing threads in thin sheets with high push-out and torque-out resistances. The TPS flush head pilot pins and the FH flush head studs also have high push out and torque-out resistances. The catalogue has useful hints and tips for merchants looking to save time using the fasteners. The products are easily located and identifiable for the needs of the distributor or merchant. PennEngineering’s goal is 100% defect free products. To this end, it has adopted a manufacturing strategy of defect prevention rather than defect detection. Using statistical tools throughout the manufacturing process, it monitors the performance and assures effective quality control of each process. If a non-conforming situation arises, it is resolved immediately with the use of appropriate quality assurance tools. Andrew Middleton, European sales manager at PennEngineering, said: “The addition of Owlett-Jaton as a UK authorised distributor for PEM brand products is an integral part

of our strategy to make our core product lines accessible to the independent distributor network in the UK. As the UK’s leading supplier to the independent fastener distributor, we view Owlett-Jaton as the ideal partner to support this strategy, and we are excited at the possibilities the partnership will bring to both organisations.” Martin Rundle, marketing manager at Owlett-Jaton, commented: “PennEngineering creates market leading self-clinching fasteners and we are delighted to extend our portfolio of products with the PEM brand products, supported by our new catalogue. Our brands are at the top of the UK market and the addition of PEM to the product range will bring further strength to what we can offer merchants and distributors.”
“ PennEngineering ® creates market leading self-clinching fasteners and we are delighted to extend our portfolio of products with the PEM ® brand products…” Martin added: “We have had a fantastic response since we issued ‘The Catalogue’ and the range from PennEngineering is exceptional in quality. The product range can be ordered 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with next day delivery available through our trade website – OJ Trade.” OJ Trade allows existing and verified Owlett-Jaton customers to log in and access the company's extensive product portfolio. The OJ Trade website also enables merchants and distributors to view products that are tailored to their needs. www.owlett-jaton.com

Purchasing driven by experience In 2010 Rivco implemented a purchasing programme to identify and create a business improvement plan. Claire Edwards visited the UK distributor of rivets, rivet nuts and tooling, to find out what the purchasing programme entailed and how it has contributed to Rivco achieving its highest revenue to date.
W
hen he arrived at Rivco, Steve Auld, managing director, brought an altogether new approach to the distributor’s purchasing process. “It was a classic case of within a small business everybody did everything,” explains Steve. “When I first came to Rivco all staff were responsible for sales and purchasing of the products they individually sold.” It was becoming harder for the sales team to split their time between sales and purchasing responsibilities and potential difficulties were arising. “I couldn’t see how we were going to achieve a consolidated view on preferred suppliers as ultimately it was down to an individual’s discretion. Managing and generating the appropriate gross earnings from a sales order also became difficult.” The solution was to appoint Andrea Allen as purchasing manager. Already a member of the Rivco sales team, Andrea had been working for the company for 17 years and had a wealth of experience in the rivet industry. “Andrea is somebody that is self-motivated and has a natural interest and understanding of the products we sell,” says Steve. “Despite not having any previous purchasing experience it is her knowledge and success that has added a significant amount to Rivco’s gross margins – in the time she’s held the role – and her appointment was the catalyst for implementing a purchasing programme.”
“ It’s a case of reading the market and understanding when the product is in demand…” Rivco’s purchasing programme contained purchasing objectives to aggregate and concentrate its spending power to support relevant areas, such as ensuring purchase orders were placed with approved manufacturers; and realising best margins by buying product direct from approved manufacturers – not from other distributors. This business improvement plan enabled Rivco to have the working capital available to fund stock and sales growth. Steve explains: “We created a framework that identified stock control measures by identifying minimums and maximums of stock levels required. We also needed to improve our cash management within the company by collecting money quicker and making sure we sold to credible customers in the first place. Any spending that was not contributing to the business was stopped and we gained structure within our newly created purchasing department.”
62
Fastener + Fixing Magazine • Issue 88 July 2014
Together with Steve, Andrea was keen for a structured department, designing a purchasing replenishment document that was available at set times for review, which began to take into account any stock that dropped below minimum levels. The review process started to enable Andrea to classify Rivco’s products and chosen manufacturers. “Classifying products to create preferred and non-preferred ranges was not straightforward,” says Andrea. “Usually a business would classify these ranges by the volume they sold. However, at Rivco we sell quite a lot of non-preferred items because we’re the only ones that stock them, so in the end it was sensible to make the decision based on our manufacturers’ capabilities.” The next stage was to introduce 1st, 2nd and 3rd tier suppliers – something that had not previously been done at Rivco. “The selection of suppliers is driven by Andrea’s knowledge,” explains Steve. “Andrea developed a list of our suppliers according to stock close to the UK, stock within Europe, or maybe even stock within the UK.” Rivco now looks to achieve 95% of purchases from prime sources – a criteria that Andrea has been very successful at achieving. “As far as I’m concerned, if I’m doing my job properly, then I’m freeing the sales department to sell with the confidence that we have products in stock,” comments Andrea. Rivco also has the benefits of a European warehouse. Andrea explains: “We anticipate the short fall on the 1st tier manufacturers and we try to fill the gaps through our European supply chain, which enables us to get stock from our principle manufacturers on a 3-4 day delivery basis. It’s pure continuity of supply, selling a part made from our 1st tier manufacturers, which means our customers know that when they ring us we will have the products in stock.” Rivco also has the ability to identify market trends and broaden its product ranges. “The benefits of having a close relationship between the sales, purchasing and account departments means I can overhear the sales team on the phone and when they are being asked for specific products – even if we don’t currently stock it,” explains Andrea. “We’re always looking for new business and to expand our product ranges, but we have to be sensible. It’s a case of reading the market and understanding when the product is in demand within the market.” As a result of this close working relationship, Rivco has recently added quad nuts and jack nuts to its ever growing specialised product range. It is clear that there is a new approach and ideas to Rivco, with a simple message: 'Making it easy for customers to buy products', and the purchasing programme has gone a long way to support this. In the future Rivco will continue to concentrate on customer experience with a new website in development, which will enable customers to log on and check Rivco’s stock levels. “We’re bringing in new, different ideas that all started with implementing the purchasing programme to maintain confidence, quality and consistent pricing,” says Steve “We also want our customers to know that we will continue to go to great lengths to help get the products and assistance they require.” www.rivco.co.uk

Safe anchoring of seats Football stadiums and sports arenas are places of great emotions and fascinating moments. To make visits a special experience, stadiums must be designed under the aspects of safety and comfort.
T
he MULTI-MONTI® screw anchor from HECO Schrauben GmbH & Co KG has a European Technical Approval (ETA – 05/0011) that offers advantages that have proven themselves in the fixation of seats on stadium stands. The MULTI-MONTI is a concrete screw with a patented special thread that can be screwed into concrete without dowels. HECO explains that the MULTI-MONTI enables a positive threaded anchorage that can be subjected to loads immediately and only requires a few simple steps to install. Its simple principle of action avoids hidden mounting errors – guaranteeing maximum safety, as well as good transfer of high loads.
Determining the right anchor Essential to the safety of the anchorage are the careful calculation of the seats and the selection of the right anchor. If the geometrical details and the loads acting on the seats are known, the measurement of the MULTI-MONTI screw anchors can take place with the HCS 3.0 calculation software. The printout included in the delivery contains not only measurement results, but also mounting diagrams and mounting details of the selected screw anchor. The selection of the right screw anchor can also be derived from the load classes and mounting part thicknesses (clamping strengths) in the technical documentation. HECO says that it is important to use the MULTI-MONTI in stainless steel A4 design, in order to avoid damage from corrosion when used outdoors. Dimension DxL

INDEX launches the new TEX-A2 chipboard screw INDEX Fixing Systems, a manufacturer and industrial supplier of fixing systems, has launched the new TEX-A2 – an A2 stainless steel high performance chipboard screw specifically designed for wooden terraces and other outdoor timber structures.
W
ith the stainless steel version, the Spanish company broadens its offer of high performance chipboard screws, which already contained the zinc plated TEXZ and the yellow zinc plated TEXZB versions. INDEX explains that the technical characteristics of the TEX chipboard screw make it the perfect solution for structural timber applications. Its high pitch allows a faster than usual drive, its helicoidally expeller throws the shaving out of the hole during the drilling, and its milling facilitates the installation of the screw by breaking the fibre of hard types of wood, while its serrated thread GSWR – with irregular dentations on the first coils – grinds them and reduces the installation torque. In addition, the TEX has ribs in the lower part of the head, which generate a direct countersink during the installation of the screw. INDEX points out that the rust and corrosion resistant TEX-A2 is even more versatile, and ensures optimal performance in all exterior wooden structures such as decks and terraces. www.indexfix.com

onas Svensson, category manager fixings at ESSVE, says: “All concrete screws on the market tend to be fully threaded, which means that the sill plate won’t be pushed down far enough, especially if it is bent at the time of mounting.” It was after a number of requests from both Norwegian and Swedish customers that ESSVE’s product specialists decided to create a concrete screw that would solve the problem. “The result was a screw with a generous release between head and thread. Its design causes it to effectively push the wood onto the concrete,” explains Jonas. ESSVE’s new hardened sill plate screw is produced for mounting of 45mm – 50mm thick sill/frame beams onto concrete. The surface treatment handles Climate Class 2, which is the requirement for mounting in unheated, under roof, spaces. The screw can be mounted directly in a pre-drilled hole without a plug, and its countersunk head does not restrict the mounting position of wood studs/beams.

Defined by quality For over 40 years the CTR Manufacturing Group (CTR) has been synonymous with manufacturing quality tooling and complete machine tool dies sets for the global fastener industry. Will Lowry visited the UK based company to find out how an investment plan of over GB£500,000 has been used to introduce new machinery and enable the business to continue to grow.
J
ames Blanchfield, managing director at CTR, has been with the company for 31 years – starting as a 16 year old apprentice. “As I worked my way up through the company, I experienced every aspect of the business, and know first hand the commitment to quality that runs through every employee. This commitment to quality has seen us become a valued supplier to a wide selection of industries, including the aerospace industry, and enabled us to develop into a modern and proactive precision engineering manufacturing group with a growing portfolio of services and products.” The CTR Manufacturing Group boasts three separate operating divisions: • Precision engineering – involving component part batch machining, multi-stage press tooling, automated transfer systems and prototype work. • Hard metal machining – wire, spark electro discharge machining (WEDM) and diamond hard turning. • Fastener tooling manufacture – in carbide and steel for automotive components, airframe rivets, plus complete machine tool dies sets, customised tool holders, as well as many more applications.
CTR’s fastener tooling division not only manufactures tools, but also offers a customer support facility that includes rapid turnaround for modification/ refurbished tooling, as well as a comprehensive CAD/AutoCAD die design consultancy service. “From enquiry through to order placement, the client’s blueprint design is constantly reviewed and evaluated to ensure it is engineered in the most cost-effective way,” says James Blanchfield. “Design recommendations are made for correct choice of materials, ease of manufacture, and assembly – therefore giving added value throughout the relationship.”
76
Fastener + Fixing Magazine • Issue 88 July 2014
James continues: “Working as partners with our customers has enabled subsequent process machining operations to be eliminated or reduced – where the extruded part shades the final finished size – resulting in significant operational cost savings and increase piece part output.” CTR’s ability to work closely with customers to ensure full tool and die optimisation is due to the experience that the company has built up over the years of developing parts, as well as the vastly experienced team of engineers. “We boast a wealth of experience within the business,” states James. “Our management team has a combined experience of 90+ years – Dianne Upton, our financial director, has been with the company 27 years and Alan Smith, production director, has been with the company for 37 years. Alan still works on the machines daily, which underlines the expertise within the company and the commitment of all of our staff to produce products to the very highest quality.” Originally CTR was focused on the automotive industry, working with 2nd tier suppliers to large automotive companies. Thanks to its wide range of capabilities CTR is able to provide tooling for most mechanical parts in a car, such as seat and seatbelt adjuster parts, and starter motor parts. “Before the recession in 2008 we were predominately focused on the automotive industry,” explains James Blanchfield. “However, once the recession hit we realised how important it was to diversify into other industries. Thanks to our large plant list and scope to manufacture we were able to expand and through the quality systems and diversification we have widened our footprint and our base.” Over the last 5 to 6 years CTR has been able to secure business in the aerospace and airframe sector. “There are very few companies that can meet and supply the tooling necessary for the aerospace industry,” mentions James. “Our unique ability to supply specialised tooling to the

CTR is a member of the Advancing UK Aerospace, Defence and Security Industries (ADS) trade organisation and proactively involved in its SC21 Supplier Chain Programme. Additionally it is a member of the Midlands Aerospace Alliance. In support of its manufacturing expertise and commitment to quality, CTR also holds registration to ISO 9001:2008 and the aerospace standard AS 9100 Rev C. The company can also offer full material and lot traceability, through its latest Materials Requirements Planning (MRP) software – enabling immediate feedback of customer order traceability. Being able to supply the aerospace industry – where high specification and zero tolerance are commonplace – has also helped CTR expand into other industries. “We can supply proven tooling and die solutions to manufacturers in a variety of specialist areas, such as spring manufacturing, plastic injection, press tools, tube swaged end forming, wind energy and the rubber moulding industry. If the process requires an extrusion form tool or progressive die set, we have the skill, experience and knowledge to provide a total engineered and tooled up solution.” In 2013 CTR experienced significant growth, bringing the business back to the strong position it found itself in prior to the recession. Due to this the company decided to invest in machinery to replace existing equipment and also expand the business’ capabilities. “The investment in new machinery has seen us receive a

lot of interest from customers for more diverse items that we previously hadn’t been able to offer,” says James Blanchfield. “As our customers have started to grow again and diversify into new areas, we have been able to meet their needs and therefore pick up extra work.” New machinery purchased includes two new CNC 5 Axis Milling Machine Centres, one with fully simultaneous capability, that offer CNC multi axis soft/hard machining and CNC internal and external grinding, as well as the latest Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) technology. “As a result of the new CNC 5 Axis Milling Machine Centres our LOP (light off production) capacity has been increased – leading to improved delivery and lead times,” states James Blanchfield. “The new centres also enable us to continue producing the highest quality products to the specifications required.” To add to the new machinery, CTR has also invested in its employees. The company has recently taken on three apprentices and is currently looking at additional skilled engineers. “At CTR we are able to offer the best of both worlds via the new computerised machinery – involving programming, drawings and design aspects – plus the experience of working hands on designing products,” says James Blanchfield. From visiting CTR it is clear that the company has managed to blend a mixture of experience, quality and service into producing tooling with unique capabilities – for almost any market. With the addition of new machinery and further growth opportunities, the future is definitely looking positive. “For this year we are going to continue integrating the new machinery and employees into the business, as well as maintaining and satisfying our current order levels,” explains James. “In the future we will look to continue to invest and grow the business in new markets. We currently supply into China, India and Taiwan showing that we are competitive in the market place and our quality is very high. We are constantly being offered more work, but it is important that we control the level of business we accept and grow at a steady level. We are defined by our quality and therefore need to make sure that our customers are completely satisfied with the products and our service. Our first priority will always be our customers.” www.ctr-uk.com

Tool Management System records tool life online Tooling costs typically represent an important share of the total production cost in fastener manufacturing. Despite this, many producers have very imprecise information about true tool life and available stock, resulting in high tooling cost and reduced availability.
A
new Tool Management System by Schwer + Kopka GmbH tracks all tooling – starting with the receipt of new tools through rework and final disposal. This includes tracking the tools through all stages of the manufacturing process, from delivery and inventorying, through preparation of the tool set and delivery to the machine for production. In addition, most machines are equipped with modern process monitoring systems, which are also used to record tool changes and automatically register the exact tool life and report it back to the main data server online. “When a tool has reached the end of its life due to wear or breakage, the operator reports the tool change at their machine terminal. When the new tool is signed in (e.g by scanning a code or selecting the tool from a list) the old tool is automatically deleted including its production ‘life’. At the same time, the tool set currently installed in the machine is updated. All data collected provides detailed reports on true tool consumption, tool cost, and delivers reliable data for future tooling needs. The required tool set for the next job is now delivered complete – reducing waiting times at the machine.”

Another goal for S.M.A.R.T S.M.A.R.T Srl has introduced its new NGW60 with integrated crack detecting unit – another successful application joining the extensive range of thread rolling machines offered worldwide by S.M.A.R.T.
U
ntil S.M.A.R.T developed the new production line (pictured above), fed by a Nedschroef heading machine, the typical process for rolling steering bolts was achieved by two or three roll machines, generally followed by a separate crack detecting device. The best optimisation of this traditional process allowed for no better than 10 – 12 parts/min productivity. Today, thanks to unmatched S.M.A.R.T technology, it is possible to have an integrated production line, capable of producing more than 60 parts/min continuously. Specifically this S.M.A.R.T threading unit, the renowned MAXI W60, used by one of the most important steering bolt producers in Europe, runs M18 x 300 steering bolts consistently at 60 parts per minute. This incomparable result is achieved thanks to the direct drive technology used for both the rotating table of the crack detecting unit and for the threader – and a bringing together of all the many well known and unique features characteristic to all S.M.A.R.T developments. S.M.A.R.T proudly claims, from its foundation, “to have reinvented the threading world through its original and advantageous solutions, which have been and are constantly, but mainly unsuccessfully, copied by other fastener machinery manufacturers”. Thanks to several international patents S.M.A.R.T is confident it continues to represent the “top” – with resultant consequences in terms of performance, precision and reliability – plus a real and measurable energy saving caused by a better efficiency. The extensive use of direct motors, both linear and rotary, allows accurate and immediate changeover, with a more and more repeatable set up, in order to achieve exceptional precision in the finished parts and a very positive influence on die life. The S.M.A.R.T threading world offers standard and customised solutions, able to roll from 1.4mm diameter parts up to M48 – always using the same innovative and exclusive technological approach.

Carlo Salvi: Innovation, know-how and excellence Carlo Salvi SpA is a world-renowned designer and producer of single die double blow and 2-die 4-blow machines, but the company is able to design much more than just this.
F
or many years Carlo Salvi has specialised in the creation and production of multi-stage, progressive heading machines that enable customers to produce high precision special parts – with very complex shapes – to be used in a variety of markets, such as aerospace and automotive. Recently Carlo Salvi launched its latest model 616 WS onto the market – a 6-die progressive header, capable of handling wire with diameter 10mm – 17.5mm. By simply touching an icon on the control panel the operator can recall, in a few seconds, jobs that have been produced previously. In fact it is possible to set-up electronically the position of the K.O pins inside the dies and the wire feed without using any wrenches whatsoever.
Wire is fed by grippers, which ensure a very high precision, (+/-0.05mm) thus avoiding damage to wire and offering the maximum clamping over on a greater wire surface area. One set of grippers covers the whole standard wire diameter range and avoids the use of wire stops reducing drastically set-up times and operating costs. The cutter holder is fully guided in order to avoid even minor flexing, while the transfer mechanism consists of independent finger units. Each set of fingers is independently pneumatically clamped so that the correct air pressure can be applied to each set of fingers as required. The oscillating transfer provides for greater flexibility and
86

degrees of operation available for the opening and closing of the fingers. A special device makes it possible to retain the product during the ejection from the dies – a facility especially recommended for the production of short, special and very complex shape parts. The K.O on the punch side is innovative and independent from ram movement. Trimming is made with an advanced cam system, which is permanently assembled on the header. The 616 also includes independent hydraulic lock of the dies. In addition, the header model 616 WS can be equipped with a pre-heating system. The pre-heating system is induction and the coil is housed in a strategic position, which allows users to heat the material from 600°C up to 950°C before it is transferred into the tooling area. Prior to the cutting area there is an optical pyrometer that constantly monitors to ensure only wire with the correct temperature can reach the working area via the automatically controlled transfer finger unit. A special refrigeration system positioned in the die holder facilitates the circulation of coolant, while the fireproof sound enclosure and automatic fire suppression equipment assure maximum safety when working in every situation. The same technology has been used on other Carlo Salvi machine models, producing results that Carlo Salvi says represent a new frontier for the market. www.carlosalvi.it

EDP’s inventory system provides efficiency EDP Plc, a specialist in software solutions to distributors, explains how implementing its Quantum VS ERP solution – an inventory management and purchasing system – can positively impact on sales and customer service levels.
Q
uantum VS ERP delivers a reliable, easy to use inventory system that manages repetitive tasks such as sales, purchase order or stock cycle monitoring – providing a team with a feeling of ‘supported’ control within the purchasing environment, and ensuring that product or component reorder requirements are immediately highlighted. The system will also alert a user to potential stock-outs, late or missed deliveries, and will allow easy analysis of stock using whatever metrics chosen – under or over-stocked items, slow moving items, or items not selling recently. Implementing a trusted stock management system will achieve stock optimisation, improve a business and maximise profit. The implementation of an inventory management and purchasing system such as Quantum VS ERP solution removes the guesswork from decision making within a purchasing or inventory environment and also eliminates time consuming ‘number crunching’. By using an automated system that provides reliable essential information, it is simple to make more informed stock management decisions, resulting in a fully empowered, knowledgeable and supported sales team that can provide subtle improvements in the customer service experience. Stock management is a fundamental aspect of any successful supply driven company, otherwise maintaining control becomes a challenge as the consequences impact upon sales, customer service and finance. The impact can be heavier than ever before with the drive for ‘just-in-time’ stock and the pursuit for customer service. Stock holding can also present a financial balancing act and the predicament of tying up too much capital versus the cost
of losing business if demand cannot be satisfied. Maintaining a constant awareness of stock location, lead time, demand origination and the ultimate stock destination are essential as the Internet and e-commerce make it very easy for competitors to respond quickly if a business cannot immediately satisfy its customers’ needs. Businesses now appreciate the need for a pre-emptive approach to sales and supply, in direct contrast to the reactive sales culture of the past and as a result a business can now be under constant pressure to ensure that its full product range is always available. There is a requirement to balance cash flow, unnecessary stock levels and unwanted expenditure with increasing competitiveness – all of which are reliant upon successful sales and stock forecasting.
Jack Pennington chooses Rapid Racking Jack Pennington Ltd, a UK industrial fastener, fixing, electrical, and tooling distributor, has chosen Rapid Racking to enhance its new warehouse after its successful expansion.
A
fter a number of successful years trading from its head office in Shipley, UK, Jack Pennington Ltd decided to expand its business operation in the south of the UK. The company needed to find a site for expansion that would suit its requirements and its customers' needs. The site could then further enhance its service and coverage of the UK for the coming years. Once the location and warehouse were chosen, Jack Pennington’s new warehouse needed to be 'equip ready' for use. A number of racking companies were asked to submit design ideas for the large warehouse project and Rapid Racking was eventually chosen due to the speed of delivery and its project management. Rapid was tasked with filling the new site with as much racking as possible whilst still allowing for fork lift trucks to easily move around, and after an initial site visit, a CAD drawing was made incorporating a number of Rapid’s products such as Rapid 1, Rapid 2, Pallet Racking and Cantilever Racking. Various revisions were made over the following months as Jack Pennington’s needs changed and once the final layout was agreed upon, delivery and installation were arranged at the Jack Pennington’s convenience.

Merlin’s delivery van routing App for Android™ Merlin Business Software has developed a Delivery Van Routing App for Android™ – designed to reduce cost and increase efficiency by eliminating the need for printed delivery notes and manifests.
T
he App will allow users to download the delivery manifest for a given route or vehicle, plot a route using Google™ Maps Navigation, send delivery updates and have customers sign for deliveries electronically, and stream the live information straight into a back office system. At the beginning of a shift a driver can log in with a username and password, input the date and route number or vehicle registration into the application, and the App will automatically download the delivery manifest, with the lines and quantities to be delivered displayed. The driver can then plot a route, send updates via SMS (available only on devices with telephony capability) and email (available only where the device has an active data connection) to customers to show how long their delivery will take to arrive. “Having provided industry specific software to the fastener industry for over forty years, we realise there is a 50/50 split in fastener suppliers delivering on their own transport and via carrier, with some delivering on both. Carrier integration is a module we’ve offered for some time now, integrating with ACE, APC, CityLink, DPD, FedEx, NetDespatch, ParcelForce, Tuffnells, TNT, TPN, UKMail and UPS, allowing suppliers to streamline their distribution process – removing the need to rekey the information on the carriers website. Now, with the recent increased demand for mobile applications in the work place and the roll out of 4G to 98% of the population by the end of 2014, we’ve developed our latest Delivery Van Routing App for Android™, which fully integrates with Merlin’s Delivery Van Routing module.” www.merlinsw.co.uk

Mobile warehouse management from OrderWise OrderWise Business Software says its mobile warehouse management devices work wirelessly in conjunction with its main system, combined with barcode scanning, to provide the perfect partnership for fast paced warehouse environments.
O
rderWise customers have the ability to pick multiple orders at the same time, and can ensure the most efficient walk route is taken. Scan validation of product, bin, batch and serial bar code also results in reduced discrepancies and faster throughput to lower the cost of servicing orders. New functionality is constantly introduced including the recently added ‘Pick Rules’ feature enabling pickers to wirelessly create and sync new picks from their mobile device – based on a range of user assigned pick rule criteria and logic. One company using OrderWise’s PDA devices for its warehouse operations is UK independent supplier and manufacturer of hinges, ironmongery, threaded bar and chain – A. Perry & Co (Hinges) Ltd.
From goods receipt and container handling, stock replenishments, picking and shipping, along with stock takes, movements and adjustments, A.Perry & Co has increased efficiency, productivity and accuracy across all areas of its warehouse activities. Chris Perry, operations director, explained: “We can process over 1,000 orders a day, which can equate to over 25 tonnes of stock, so the small margins within our business require the most efficient of systems. After just a few weeks of implementing OrderWise Business Software and using its mobile warehouse devices we were handling the same volumes as our old system with less staff and exceptional accuracy.”

Spiralock® thread form nuts STANLEY Engineered Fastening now offers self-locking Spiralock® thread form in a full range of corrosion resistant, stainless steel, fractional and metric hex flange nuts.
F
or more than 35 years, the Spiralock® thread form has been used in extreme fastening applications where joint failure or loosening is not an option – from the main engines of NASA’s Space Shuttle, the Saturn Cassini orbiter and Titan Huygens probe, to deep sea oil rigs, military and aerospace vehicles, as well as medical implants such as artificial limbs and heart pumps. STANLEY points out that its Spiralock threaded nuts accept standard male fasteners; eliminate the need for other locking devices; minimise galling – since it is free spinning until clamp load is applied; and substantially reduce the potential for fatigue failure compared to standard threads. “The Spiralock thread form solves thread loosening and joint integrity issues by changing the physics of how the threads interact. In traditional 60° threads, the gap between the upper edges of the male and female threads can lead to shock, vibration, or temperature caused thread loosening. Stress concentration and fatigue at the first few engaged threads is also a problem, particularly with softer metals. The unique profile of Spiralock threads closes the gap that causes loosening, improving the integrity and reliability of threaded joints.” Industries concerned about corrosion will also benefit from the corrosion protection delivered by the nuts’ grade 316 austenitic stainless steel composition, which can be used instead of lower grades of stainless steel.
Jubilee secures pole position The 2014 motorsport calendar is in full swing and once again Jubilee Clips will be used extensively across a number of series and models and at some of the most prestigious races, such as Le Mans and the Monaco Grand Prix.
T
his season has a special focus for Jubilee Clips as the company has reached an agreement to sponsor Amigo Motorsport driver Rob Gaffney in the single make UK Ginetta GT5 series. If there is one thing racing drivers hate it is being beaten by an equipment failure, which means that selecting the right components is critical – which is why Ginetta specified the Jubilee brand. “In all of the years I’ve worked on racing cars I can honestly say I have never been let down by a genuine Jubilee Clip,” commented Fred Marsh, Amigo Motorsport’s chief mechanic. “Those guys have more experience than anyone in making hose clips and I can see why Ginetta specified Jubilee by brand.” On Jubilee’s involvement in supply hose clamps, Ian Jennings, managing director at Jubilee Clips, said: “I am a big fan of motorsport. I love to see engineering pushed to the limits because going further and faster and competing for the win is what it is all about. Like our company, Amigo Motorsport is a family venture, proving that enthusiasm is more important than budget. They’ve been very welcoming to us and we were very happy to help them out with their ambitious plans.” www.jubileeclips.co.uk
Hex sealing nuts with locking patch ZaGO Manufacturing Inc’s hex sealing nuts now come with nylon patch as an extra added value, which the company says results in the ultimate protection, with locking and sealing in one design.
H
ex sealing nuts block air, liquid, dust and other contaminants with a special defensive rubber, while resisting vibration with the patch-locking element. ZaGO manufactures these nuts with a groove to capture an O-ring, transforming an ordinary nut into a sealing nut with full metal-to-metal contact. The sealing nuts are then put through a second process where a nylon patch is permanently spray bonded onto the threads creating a locking element to withstand vibration. In cases of severe pressure, ZaGO says that its self-sealing nuts offer the ultimate sealing protection and can withstand extreme conditions due to their unique design, which features a rubber layer on the face of the nut.

RotaBolts extending life of offshore platforms Extending the life of offshore oil and gas platforms beyond their original design philosophy has resulted in RotaBolt速 measurement technology being adopted across a number of major projects.
A
combination of 'permanent' repair work, upgrading existing infrastructure, and the development of new and complex strengthening systems, has resulted in new contracts and a significant area of business for the company. With expectations that oil and gas fields may still be producing for another 25 to 30 years, the work has also included the straightforward re-fit of RotaBolts on existing production infrastructure, such as on heat exchangers and high-pressure pipe work and flanges. However, it is where new designs and engineering techniques have had to be used that the fasteners have been helping to break new ground. Where there has been a requirement for repair work to be carried out there have been no off-the-shelf solutions. Structural strengthening programmes have varied from applying massive clamping systems to platform legs and support infrastructures, through to fitting underwater cable stays more commonly associated with bridge structures. Changes to the design and engineering details have also impacted fabrication and installation. RotaBolt速 is currently supplying a range of its measurement fasteners to offshore contractors for use on clamping systems, flanges and jacket reinforcement designs. These vary from M24 bolts on clamps of less than half a metre in diameter, up to M90 bolts that are 3.5 metres long being used on cable stay clamps that are 130 tonnes.

PEMSERTER® Series 4® upgraded The PEMSERTER® Series 4® press for installing self-clinching fasteners, from PennEngineering®, has been newly upgraded with an optical sensor feature designed to promote faster work set-up.
T
he newly engineered Optical Sensor Indicator (OSI) has been integrated as standard into the built-in point of operation safety of the press to signal when the safety is properly set for each job. The OSI activates during set-up mode when the press ram/punch is being adjusted onto the workpiece prior to fastener installation. The process is set in motion when the operator unlocks the ram-jam nut and then begins to adjust the ram clockwise. The OSI then changes colour (from black to orange) at the exact point when the safety is successfully engaged, eliminating the potential for operator error. The press achieves adjustable insertion force from 1.8kN to 53.4kN / 400lbs to 6 tonnes and features 45.7cm / 18 inch throat depth providing clearance for a wide variety of chassis configurations.

The 18G/50 Brad Nailer is a dedicated nailing tool with precision air tool construction, which will accurately drive 18 gauge brads with little marking to the surface of the timber. This saves the user a lot of time and frees a hand to guide and position the workpiece. The nailing tool can also be used for a temporary fix during glue drying. The 16G/45 Finish Nailer fires the 16 gauge finish nail, a heavier nail than the 18 gauge version, allowing its use in a wide selection of applications including those that require a heavier, more secure second fix nail. Tacwise says its dedicated nailers are quick to load and do not require gas packs or compressors – the user must simply load, plug in/turn on and fire.

Yokota introduces E-Wrenches Dutch air tool distributor Rami Yokota has introduced a new range of E-Wrenches – offering hybrid technology for tightening threaded fasteners.
Y
okota electric system wrenches, with integrated torque transducer and angle sensor, offer a large reduction of energy consumption and a high degree of accuracy and work efficiency, points out Rami Yokota. The range consists of three different sizes of tools, with a total torque range between 7.5Nm and 90Nm. Yokota impulse wrenches are widely used for tightening jobs in the assembly industry, where accurate torque tolerances are necessary. The impulse tools are light, powerful, small and have no kick-back. The new tools have a low weight/torque ratio; high speed fastening; acoustic and LED signals for tightening status indication; an electric (brushless) servo drive – freely RPM adjustable in the controller; hybrid technology; and a 100% check on tightening abnormalities including cross thread and double hit. “Product liability is essential to carmakers, and all tightened joints have to be correct. For this reason all bolted joints must be counted, documented and tightened with the right clamping force. In order to do this, a user must use an impulse wrench (with a built-in torque transducer and angle encoder on the main shaft) connected to a controller. If the controller establishes that the tightened joints do not meet the specifications, it can give a line-stop signal and the joints can be checked manually."

Cobra looking for a developer UK inventor Mick Carrington has come up with a new steel fastening system he is calling ‘Cobra’, which he believes, when fully commercialised, will fulfil a number of different functions previously requiring expensive and complex connection systems to achieve.
C
obra Multi-Clamp connects steel ‘I beams’ without the need to drill and bolt, thereby enabling the erection of factory gantry systems quickly, easily and extremely strongly. “Other systems,” says Mick, “need the inclusion of a retaining plate when fastening steel beams together. This is invariably a stumbling block for the design engineer and makes mistakes easy to achieve in manufacture, not to mention being awkward to install.” Another benefit Mick foresees is the ability to connect beams that are at an angle to one another (non-orthogonal), another application where achieving similar results can prove extremely cost using existing systems. “An excellent by-product of my design,” continues Mick, “is its ability to be used in an expansion joint system. A recent example was on a power station job where a leaking pipe had to be changed. The present system usually uses a welded piece of angle onto a beam to allow the pipe to move under thermal expansion. Hot work permits had to be obtained to allow a grinder to be used to remove the fastener and part of the plant had to be shut down. This happened again when reinstating the joint using a welder.
The whole process took a very long time and was very costly, as well as a potentially dangerous situation. With the Cobra Multi-Clamp, the pipe skid could be simply unbolted and the pipe changed, without the need for costly and dangerous hot work or even a plant shutdown.” Mick believes the Cobra is the only fastener in the world that allows thermal expansion to occur while still retaining structural integrity. Mick has produced the steel prototypes shown in the photograph. He says the Cobra has a reversible flat plate with two holes, so the joint is retained twice, giving it incredible strength. There are no handed parts making manufacture very easy and cheap. “Basically I am looking for an enterprising partner, who is maybe already in steel manufacture/sales/distribution and wants to add another exciting string to their bow,” Mick explains. “The product needs further refinement in its development and strength testing but once in production will make an inexpensive, strong and easy to fit fastener with a variety of applications.” For more information contact Mick Carrington at mick.carrington@ntlworld.com

New adhesive cures as low as 60°C DELO Industrial Adhesives has developed the DELOMONOPOX LT204 epoxy resin – a special adhesive for temperature sensitive parts that gives full strength even at a curing temperature as low as 60°C.
H
eat-curing adhesives are used in many applications that require high strength and permanent resistance to environmental influences. In order to achieve these properties, the adhesive is usually cured at temperatures between 100°C and 150°C. An application area where many temperature sensitive materials are used is optical packaging. In this industry components are bonded to mini-cameras, actuators and infrared, as well as image or motion sensors for consumer electronics. The micro-optics of these assemblies are often covered by anti-reflection or filter coatings. Unlike most plastic lenses, these coatings are very sensitive and get damaged at elevated temperatures – the new DELOMONOPOX LT204 epoxy resin now makes it possible to bond these materials without any problems.
DELO says its DELOMONOPOX LT204 epoxy resin is a multi-purpose, one component adhesive, which can be processed within 48 hours at room temperature and has excellent adhesion to many plastics, including LCP, PA and PPS, as well as to metals and FR4 composites. It can be dispensed through needles with a diameter as small as 200µm, which are common in consumer electronics and enable finer structures. Curing is possible from 60°C, minimising the thermal stress and resulting in reduced warpage of the components bonded and fewer tensions within the package. In addition, DELO says its new adhesive helps the bonding process excel through low energy consumption and high profitability.

ESTABLISHED 1870 Manufacturer of Quality Industrial Fasteners
B
lue in colour for easy visual detection, the mounts are screw fixing bases that can be secured to any surface in order to hold a cable tie in place. This screw fixing element means that the product does not require any self-adhesive, removing the risk of the adhesive becoming detached from the base and entering the manufacturing process undetected. The mounts also boast a high metal pigment, meaning that even small ‘cut-off’ pieces are detectable and they can be used as part of the HACCP process. Richard Rands, product manager for fastenings and fixing at HellermannTyton, said: “Plastic contamination is a major issue that can cause problems through the supply chain. If undetected before the products reach the consumer, plastic fragments could at best cause distress and have the potential to present a choking or laceration hazard. To avoid this, it is essential that cable management solutions comply with industry standards stating that any plastic component used around food or pharmaceutical production lines should have a detectable metal content. However, this is not a statutory requirement and there are no established standards. The cable mounts reflect the next stage of development here at HellermannTyton and provide a safe, reliable and low risk solution.”

LOCTITE®’s threadlocking sticks LOCTITE® has added LOCTITE® 248 to its wide range of anaerobic threadlockers, which it says is an excellent method of keeping fasteners firmly in place.
S
elf-loosening of threaded fasteners is a leading cause of catastrophic failure in industrial machinery so maintaining appropriate clamping forces is an important element in their effectiveness. For applications where a liquid product may be too fluid to stay on the part or difficult to apply, LOCTITE 248 and 268 sticks can be used. The new LOCTITE 248 is a medium strength, single component product for threads up to M50 and LOCTITE® 268 is its high strength counterpart. The colours blue and red differentiate the respective products visually. As with the LOCTITE liquid anaerobic adhesives, both LOCTITE 248 and 268 cure in the absence of air when confined between close fitting metal surfaces and are suitable for use on a wide variety of metal surfaces. They are also effective on passive substrates such as stainless steel. The health and safety credentials of these latest generation sticks are also improved, as is their tolerance of oil, making them less sensitive to improperly cleaned parts. Henkel says that these qualities have been achieved without compromising any of the products’ other key properties such as chemical resistance and shelf life.
TR expands stud range TR Fastenings has added new materials and sizes to its wide range of studs for the sheet metal sector.
T
he high strength studs for thin sheets are available in hardened stainless steel and TR’s standard flush-head studs are now available in two new sizes – M2.5 and M8. Across the range sizes are ex-stock in diameters from M2 – M10 and lengths from 5mm – 50mm.
These new products form part of TR Fastenings’ portfolio of sheet metal products, including the genuine Hank rivet bush, blind rivets, blind rivet nuts, K-nuts, cage nuts, weld studs and nuts, swage nuts, and the Euro rivet bush. The vast majority of TR’s stud range is produced by the company’s manufacturing plant in Singapore and these newly available sizes of self-clinch studs have been introduced in response to customer demand. The studs are used widely by sheet metal subcontractors for a variety of applications including medical equipment, marine, automotive, white goods, telecommunications, electronics and general engineering.
