When I think of summer, I think of water. Waves, water sports, watermelon, waterfall hikes, sea world, water parks, pool parties and more. I associate summer with every kind of interaction you can imagine having with water. I recently found out, I’m not the only one. Here in the pages of our “San Diego Summer Guide,” the water theme seems to really flow. You’ll learn about some fabulously wet hot spots, the amazing health benefits of drinking water and how to really make a splash with your date this summer. Beside keeping you cool from the summer sun, water activities have another distinct advantage - beach attire. A bathing suit says so much about a person in so few words… or so little fabric, as the case may be. One thing is without question, a bikini screams youth, health and beauty. It’s only fitting then that Fashion 5.0 hosted the 2011 Bikini Week Homecoming Party at Float, celebrating the return of the spring national tour. Originating right here in San Diego, Bikini Week has quickly become the largest annual touring bikinifashion event worldwide. No summer activity is complete without the right music, and Fashion 5.0 has stepped in to provide fresh insight into a couple of 2011’s biggest musical acts to hit San Diego this summer, Adele and Switchfoot. Remember that summer is the hottest season for music events and provides a unique opportunity to attend open air concerts. Check out the events calendar to insure your evenings are packed with as much fun as your summer days!

Initially drawn to photography for landscape and nature, Norton has shifted his focus to fashion and editorial portraiture. In working with Fashion 5.0, Norton stated “Fashion 5.0 is the only magazine San Diego has to offer that emphasizes, if not focuses on fashion, which I think is commendable and something San Diego needs desperately.”

MEGAN HAWKINS A fresh new face on the scene, Megan Hawkins is fierce, bringing a high-fashion look that is highly sought after in the modeling industry. Young and armed with anticipation of a huge career, Megan brings her versatility to print this month by nailing the cover with her natural, California beach look that screams fashion and summer lifestyle. A cheap and easy way to see things from an aquatic perspective is to snag some fins and goggles to snorkel the Cove, as schools of fish can be found not far from the coast. Get scuba certified and venture farther out for a breathtaking perspective on life under the sea. Even beginners or those who can’t swim can enjoy the sealife of the Cove via kayak. With rental spots nearby, kayaking doesn’t require any experience but allows for another fun way to experience the La Jolla scenery. 1. CAR WASH If your man is into cars and you’re into having a clean one, spend an afternoon washing your cruiser together. Throw on your swimsuit and be sure to tell him he’s an expert at getting the grime off your wheels. Whether you go to a drive-thru car wash or try out the old bucket and hose method in your driveway, this can be an entertaining way to kill an hour while actually accomplishing something productive together! Plus, when does washing a car with a cute guy ever not turn into a playful water fight?

Even if you’re not the outdoorsy type, going hiking is an exciting way to get some exercise and enjoy the sunshine without having to spend a dime. After you’ve purchased your tasty treats, walk on over to Balboa Park and score a patch of shade on a grassy hill for an afternoon picnic.

With the world growing older and the music business getting elaborate and theatrical, it’s no surprise why musicians these days must experiment with new sounds, looks and outrageous performances.

Adkins likes things simple; her pop, rock, adult alternative and soul style make for a "mellow relaxing" experience which has certainly gotten her noticed in the music industry.
The English singer-songwriter sings from past experiences and is not afraid to choke up in front of an audience. In recently performing “Someone” at the Brit Awards, she was close to tears at the end of the performance.
You might recognize her from the 2009 51st Grammy Awards as Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

Adele’s main priority is not what she looks like, but what she sounds like; her precedence has definitely paid off when musicians such as Beyoncé comment on her music and say, “You’re amazing! When I listen to you I feel like I’m listening to God.” Gym and dieting are the least of her worries. According to Adkins, “My life is full of drama… I don’t have time to worry about something as petty as what I look like.” Her albums 19 and 21 reflect her age at the time of its conception, and differ in sound and melody. Both albums have the common theme of breaking up, inspired by her past failed relationships.

I’m more patient, more honest, more forgiving and more aware of my own flaws, habits and principles. Something that comes with age I think. So fittingly this record is called 21. We recently caught up with Jon Foreman (lead singer) and Chad Butler (drummer) at their studio, while they were putting the final touches on their next album, Vice Verses. By Megan Vaughn

INTERVIEW WITH JON FOREMAN
AND CHAD BUTLER How did you get started in the industry? Jon: Chad and I met a long time ago in high school at Carlsbad High and we’ve been friends ever since! Growing up we both played in various bands around San Diego and music was always a big part of my life. I never expected to be where I’m at today, the goal was college and maybe pro surfing but none of those really panned out for me!
After forming your band, how did you come up with the name Switchfoot? Chad: Growing up in San Diego allowed us to spend a lot of our time surfing! We figured we’d take a slice of home with us. “Switchfoot” is a surfing term, which literally means taking the opposite stance on your board. We thought it fit our band pretty well!
What is your overall message to listeners? Jon: If we were to have a mantra it would probably be “life is short, live it well.” That’s basically the over-rocking theme of most of our music!
Did you anticipate your Grammy for Best Rock Gospel Album for "Hello Hurricane?" Jon: No! It was a big surprise. The Grammy concept is a strange one because what we do has its rewards by simply being able to play music every night. At the same time, to win a Grammy, that’s huge. It doesn’t change anything on the one hand; we’re still going to be playing rock ‘n’ roll every night, around the country and around the world. It’s definitely nice to know that other people are listening! Chad: I think my neighbors think I actually have a real job now!
Do you find it difficult to maintain your status as one of the most humble multimillion dollar rock groups? Jon: Oh my gosh! One of the most humble rock groups? I’m honored that we can live up to those standards! I am very aware that what I do for a living is a gift and I’m very thankful. Being able to sing our songs night after night is truly rewarding. Our friends are amazing as well. We have a lot to be thankful for!
Tell us about your new album, "Vice Verses!" Chad: We’ve been working on this album for a few months. We actually started it while we were on tour for Hello Hurricane last year. We got to demo a bunch of songs during mic check and ended up coming home with all of our demos. We brought them back to our studio and started chipping away! It’s been a really great experience working at home in our space in San Diego.
of these kids didn’t chose the situation they are in, so Bro-Am is a chance for San Diego to do what it does best--help each other out! I love where I’m from and I think this is a day that San Diego really shines!
What is your favorite album you’ve put together so far? Chad: The next one! Always. We are always excited about the new songs and we can’t wait to share them with the world!
Shout outs? Jon: Come to the Bro-Am, June 18! You’re invited! Every year it’s bigger and better. We’ve had some amazing people perform there in the past. We’ve had Chris Shiflett from the Foo Fighters, Jason Mraz, Tristan Prettyman and a bunch of other great bands! We also have a couple of surprises and tricks up our sleeve for this year! It’s a free event, on the beach at Moonlight, so be there!
When can we expect "Vice Verses" to be released? Jon: Summertime! You always need some good summertime rock ‘n’ roll!
What’s Bro-Am? Jon: Bro-Am is my favorite day of the year! It is an opportunity to play music, surf and party on the beach! All proceeds go toward an incredible organization which started in San Diego, StandUp For Kids. We’ve all had our hands dealt to us in life and some of us have better hands than others. Most

We brought this five-day fashion event across the country to let the spring break crowds see what bikini fashion is all about. What is your role in Bikini Week? I am the creator and CEO! What are your ideas for the Bikini Week Tour in 2012? For 2012, I am hoping that the Bikini Week Tour will expand and we will go international. We’ve had designers from all around the world reach out to us about getting their bikinis involved in the tour, which is really exciting. Where can our readers find your bikinis? Most of our bikinis have been shipped to us, but you can find the designers online. BIKINI WEEK SAN DIEGO TOUR 2011 After showcasing their bikini runway shows in LA, Havasu, Texas, Palm Springs, San Diego, Vegas and Miami this spring, Fashion 5.0 caught up with a few people involved in putting the Tour together and here is what they had to say!
INTERVIEW WITH DEL HELES, CFO: What is your role in the Bikini Week Tour? I am the CFO of Bikini Week! I am in charge of finances, contracts and all organizational aspects. I make sure things get done! How can our readers take the Bikini Week look to the streets? This year the Bikini Week Tour began immediately after Fashion Week Paris, London and New York. This allowed designers to display their new fashion to the general public through our tour. Fashion 5.0 readers now have the opportunity to see these bikinis at our shows and take the look directly to the streets. What can we expect when Bikini Week hits San Diego? Five days of fun and fashion! We are going to start the week at Side Bar, then hit Voyeur and several other downtown nightclubs. You can expect fun parties, pictures and lots of pretty ladies! Also, make sure to note the bikini parade world record attempt we are holding on May 15th that leaves from the Andaz Hotel at 2pm. This is an event people will be talking about! Shout outs? INTERVIEW WITH GLENN OSBORNE, GO FASHION: What is your role in Bikini Week? My company, Go Fashion, was contracted to put together all the production aspects of the Bikini Week Tour including choreography, model casting and audio choreography. We also designed each set used on the tour, from the runways, lighting, themes, sets and much more. Basically you could say I am the producer of the fashion shows!
What has been your favorite aspect of the Tour? My favorite part of the Tour has been the challenges we’ve had to overcome. Being on the production side gets a little hectic sometimes. Every event is different, the venues are different, the models are different, so that makes it challenging.
Shout outs? The Bikini Week Tour is amazing! The team is amazing and the people we have worked with in every city have been phenomenal. Come check out the tour when it hits San Diego in May, it’s going to be something this city has never seen before!

Quick tip for tweezing: Try to avoid tweezing hair above your brow. If you have an issue with your brows being thick always tweeze below the brow first to see if that helps.
For filling in your eyebrows: When filling in brows (and to keep as natural a look as possible), use a brow pencil where there is absolutely no hair. After drawing in with the pencil use a brow powder with an angled brush to add softness to your brow. Last, use the brow powder to fill in any sparseness throughout your brow.
Find your perfect arch! Here's what you will need: Pencil, Tweezers and a Mirror
Step 1:
Looking in your mirror, hold your pencil vertically against the outside of your nostril. At the point of the pencil is where your eyebrow should begin.
Step 2:
Now keep the base of your pencil on the outside of your nostril and swing the top half directly over the pupil of your eye. This is where your arch should be.
Step 3:
Lastly, shift the top half of the pencil over to the outer corner of your eye and end your brow here.
