I have had a varied career across compliance, consulting and technology operations and I am now a Senior Payments Product Manager at Virgin Media O2, where I have spent over a decade shaping and improving value-added payment products used by major brands. My work focuses on product performance, regulatory alignment, and delivering customer-focused improvements. Alongside my role, I’m passionate about encouraging young people, especially women, into STEM. I have been a TechWomen 50 award winner and a Rising Stars in Telecoms award winner, recognised for my work championing diversity in technology. I currently volunteer as Co-Chair of the Women’s Network at Virgin Media O2 where I help build community, visibility and opportunities for women across the organisation.

The best thing about my job is variety – no two days are the same, on the one hand I’m launching mobile billing on Netflix and on the other I’m ensuring charity donations are enabled for Comic Relief on campaign night. Additionally, I’ve loved the opportunities I’ve had through the Women’s Network to meet so many people in the business as well as empower and champion others.

Police

Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) play a vital role in neighbourhood policing, spending most of their day out in the community providing visibility, reassurance, and support. Their daily work includes patrolling local areas, speaking with residents, gathering information, and helping to resolve low-level issues before they escalate. They often support vulnerable people, visit victims, work with schools and local partners, and respond to concerns about anti-social behaviour.

One of the most rewarding parts of being a Police Community Support Officer is having the opportunity to make a real difference to vulnerable people within the community. PCSOs are often the first approachable face of local policing, and that gives them a unique ability to offer reassurance, support, and practical help to those who need it most. Whether it’s checking in on isolated individuals, helping victims feel safe again, or connecting people with the right services, the role allows you to build trust and create meaningful relationships. Knowing that your presence can bring comfort, improve someone’s wellbeing, or prevent harm is what truly makes the job fulfilling.

James Rhodes

Trainee Solicitor, Employment, Herrington Carmichael LLP

Before joining Herrington Carmichael, I worked at an international law firm in Reading as a Paralegal for three years. I began my training contract with Herrington Carmichael in September 2025; this is a two-year period during which future solicitors rotate through different areas of law before qualifying.

I have now been with the firm for around seven months, working across several departments as part of my training contract. My work has included supporting partners and senior fee earners on complex matters, drafting a range of legal documents, working directly with clients and helping to progress cases through to completion. So far, I have gained experience in both commercial property and residential development and am currently in the Employment Department, acting for both employers and individuals on a variety of workplace matters. My department rotations have been incredibly varied, giving me a broad foundation across multiple areas of law.

The best part of my role is seeing the positive impact our work has on clients.

Fiona Griffin

Barrister

I had always wanted to be a barrister and in particular a barrister practising within the area of Family and Child Law. I did, however, have a change of heart whilst completing the first year of my A levels and applied to study Music and Education at university. By the end of my A levels, I had flipped back to Law and went through a pre-clearing interview to get into university. From that point I have never looked back and now have the huge privilege of sitting as a part-time judge in my chosen area of Law.

I specialise in supporting clients through proceedings relating to their families and their financial circumstances upon the breakdown of their relationships. This includes helping parents to agree the arrangements for their children once they have separated, representing parents, children and the local authority in proceedings relating to child protection concerns and dividing finances at the end of a relationship.

The best thing about my job is being able to support clients who are often extremely vulnerable.

PhD in Analytical Chemistry

Abigail Cook (2018)

I am in the final few months of a PhD in Analytical Chemistry where I use techniques, such as mass spectrometry, to answer important biological questions. The purpose of a PhD is to contribute new knowledge to the scientific community by investigating novel research problems. My work involves practical laboratory experiments, data analysis and communicating the results through publications and presentations at conferences all over the world. Completing a PhD can lead to many different career paths, including academic research, industry, healthcare, scientific publishing, teaching, and consultancy.

The best thing about my job is that no two days are ever the same. It is a career built around problem-solving, curiosity, and discovery. I enjoy taking big research questions, working out the best way to investigate them, and uncovering findings that could one day make a real difference to people’s lives. It is incredibly rewarding to know that the science I do now could help the public in the future.

Interior

I provide the full lifecycle of a design service from initial brief to developing and re-designing homes using Farrow and Ball paints, and fabric houses, such as Romo, Osborne and Little, Designers Guild and Sanderson Design Group, to name a few.

I provide fabric and paint solutions to enhance customer homes and lifestyles. With an eye for design, I transform a house into a home with blinds, curtains headboards, cushions, wallpapers and paint. This involves a key understanding of lighting due to the highly pigmented paints and design using pattern, texture, and textiles. I work either as an in-home offering or via a virtual consultation.

The best thing about my job is the diversity; no two customers are the same, allowing me to provide a bespoke service for each individual.

Lucy Lyons (Gaynor) (1987)

Indie Author

After many years writing novels and pursuing the traditional publishing route, I became an indie author in 2023 and published my first novel. Now, I write in two genres: nostalgic mysteries and epic fantasies. The Finding Machine, The Millennium Affair, The Noughty Spy and The Stonetape House are part of the internationally acclaimed, award winning Alex Martin Cozy Mystery series.

The Black Bane, published in 2026 is currently in the SPFBO competition for indie fantasy authors with The Dead Spell and The Vile Chairs coming soon.

The best thing about being an indie author is the autonomy. I make all the decisions over my writing and publishing schedule, advertising, and posting on social media. The indie author community is incredibly supportive and you can learn everything as you go without having to take any further qualifications or study.

Grace Watson (2012)

Founder and Managing Director, Grace Green

As the final months of sixth form college loomed, I became unsure of my university subject choice so decided to defer my places for a year. In the meantime, I began working full-time as a sales negotiator for a local estate agency and quickly fell in love with the job, the people and the hustle and bustle of working life, so decided to stay! Eight years (and a couple of different roles) later, I have launched my own boutique agency, which will deliver specialist property styling, staging and premium marketing for high end homes across Berkshire, Surrey and Hampshire.

The best thing about my job has to be the people – that old cliché! In all seriousness, the people I have met and the beautiful homes I have had the pleasure of dealing with over the years have been fantastic. Moving home is very rarely a commercial decision – there is almost always an emotive drive. Enabling people to move onto the next chapter of their lives is a huge privilege and I have built some longstanding relationships through my line of work.

Vicki Grace (2006)

Senior Arts Executive and Fundraiser

After studying at the University of St Andrews and spending much of my time producing plays for the university theatre society, I joined Shakespeare’s Globe’s fundraising team. Gradually I built up my career as a fundraiser moving from Shakespeare’s Globe to senior roles at the Donmar Warehouse and Royal Court Theatre. I then transitioned into a role with a slightly wider remit by taking on an Executive Director position at a theatre company.

Three years ago I joined a cultural sector consultancy where I now work as Director of Recruitment and Organisational Change. In this role I support organisations across the breadth of the culture and heritage sector in the UK working with companies in all art forms and in all parts of the country. I specialise in supporting them to recruit new senior talent (Artistic Directors, Executive Directors and Board Members) as well as supporting leadership to manage complex change within the organisation.

BSc (Hons) Veterinary Physiotherapy at Harper Adams University - this included a year in industry where I secured a placement at the Royal Veterinary College

Maddie Wigley (2018)

Veterinary Physiotherapist

As a self-employed veterinary physiotherapist, I work with a wide range of animals including dogs, horses and cats. I work closely with veterinary surgeons to support animals recovering from injury or surgery, as well as those managing long-term conditions, helping them maintain the best possible mobility and quality of life throughout their lives. My role often involves spending extended time with each patient, allowing me to notice subtle changes in movement or behaviour and feed this information back to the vet team. In many ways, animal physiotherapy is very similar to human physiotherapy - just with four legs, a lot more hair and usually a bit more drool!

The best thing about my job is how incredibly rewarding it is. Every day I get to work with animals to help make them more comfortable, stronger and able to enjoy a better quality of life. Animals are naturally therapeutic to be around and they have a wonderful way of showing their appreciation. Being able to see that progress and know you’ve played a part in it is what makes the job so special.

Associate Technical Director

I’m an Associate Technical Director specialising in tools programming for games, but my career began in film. I started out as a rigger, and one of the highlights of that early work was working on Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy. I built the digital skeletons and control systems that allow characters to move, emote, and perform naturally - the technical foundation animators use to bring a character to life.

Today, I guide technical direction for internal tools, support engineers and artists across multiple disciplines and help build the systems that keep production running smoothly. Whether it’s improving build pipelines, refining editor tools or developing automation that saves hundreds of hours, my goal is always to improve creativity through smart, reliable technology.

The best thing about my job is freeing Artists, Animators and Designers to be creative by removing the technical/repetitive roadblocks that would otherwise get in the way.

I work at SAP, the world’s leading provider of enterprise software. I am a digital transformation expert with many years’ experience of implementing software for global companies. Today I bridge the gap between technical innovation and business operations, by showcasing the power of cloud and AI technology, and hence help organisations thrive in an increasingly automated world.

The best thing about my job is having the freedom to learn the latest technology and present those capabilities to the organisations and brands we use everyday.

Clinical Research Associate (CRA)

I am a Clinical Research Associate (CRA) for a large US pharmaceutical company and I am responsible for overseeing cancer research studies involving new treatments. My role involves travelling across the UK, collaborating with healthcare professionals at various hospitals, and ensuring clinical trials are conducted safely and efficiently. I find this work particularly rewarding as it combines scientific knowledge with the opportunity to contribute to meaningful advancements in patient care.

During my studies, I gained hands-on experience working in histopathology and in a palliative care hospice. These roles gave me valuable insight into both laboratory science and patient-centred care, shaping my interest in clinical research.

The best thing about my job is contributing to the development of new treatments that have the potential to improve and save lives whilst also being able to travel and meet new people!

Trained as a Registered Nurse in Learning Disabilities (RNMH) at Tatchbury Mount Hospital and have continued to build my skills through clinical leadership, governance, and specialist training throughout my career

Registered Nurse

I’ve been a Learning Disability Nurse since 1984, supporting people with learning disabilities to live healthier, more independent and more fulfilling lives. My career has taken me from community homes to specialist clinical and leadership roles and I now continue to use my experience to support vaccination services across Dorset.

Over the years, I’ve led community teams, supported complex health needs, shaped training programmes for learning disability services and managed the LeDeR programme to help improve outcomes for people with learning disabilities. I also stepped out of retirement during the Covid-19 pandemic to help deliver the national vaccination programme, working across large centres and in the community.

I provide person-centred care, clinical guidance, and advocacy, working closely with families, carers, and multidisciplinary teams and I continue to support public health work such as vaccination programmes for vulnerable groups and pregnant women.

Working with people who have a learning disability has been a real privilege. Forming strong, trusting relationships while maintaining professionalism is something unique to this field. It is one of the things that has kept me passionate about the job for so many years.

Learning Disability Nursing offers diversity and flexibility. It’s a career where no two days are the same, and where you can genuinely make a difference. The best thing about my job is supporting people through difficult moments and seeing the positive changes that come from understanding their behaviour and helping them thrive.

After GCSEs in Mathematics/English/French/Triple Science/ Geography/History/Latin, an EPQ, and A levels in Biology, Chemistry and Geography, I studied Veterinary Medicine at Nottingham. I was awarded the Animal Health & Welfare Prize in 2020 and a first for my BVMed Sci degree in 2022, after undertaking a research project on Lassa Virus.

After a broad-based clinical training covering farm animals, equine, small animals, exotics and veterinary public health, I qualified in 2024. I have been working as a small animal veterinary surgeon at an independent practice in Kent since then.

I enjoy the balance of structured days which are also quite varied; working with colleagues who are motivated and kind and knowing that by helping animals, I am making a difference to owners’ lives as well.

The patient journey, from when a new patient first attends, to completely transforming their smile, and relieving them of pain, is a big part of my job, as well as building ongoing relationships with patients over a number of years. My job involves having a good rapport with a wide range of people, and carrying out detailed, intricate work.

The best thing about my job is the interaction with many different people, and the ability to transform a person’s experience of dental care. I also like dealing with very nervous patients and building their confidence in a dental environment.

I am an Assistant Psychologist within an NHS children’s learning disability team, which involves assisting with behaviour clinics and autism assessments. Previously to this, I was an Assistant Psychologist within an independent specialist school for children with developmental trauma and autism. Assistant Psychologists work as part of a team to provide clinical support for a particular client group, under the supervision of a Chartered Psychologist. This could include administering psychological assessments and undertaking observations or implementing interventions and conducting service evaluation projects based on outcomes and service user participation.

I credit the skills gained within my various volunteering roles (as a School Governor with responsibility for monitoring Special Educational Needs and as a Lead Volunteer for Girlguiding London and South East England’s Peer Education programme) with helping me to stand out in a competitive job field. The best thing about my job is that it can be completely different depending on your client group and team.

Medical Adviser for an International Charity

My preclinical training was at the University of Oxford and included a degree in physiology and psychology. I moved to Imperial College London for my clinical training, where I was awarded the Harmsworth Scholarship. After house jobs I trained in paediatrics and subsequently in paediatric cardiology, becoming a Consultant in 2008. I held NHS posts at Evelina London and subsequently at Great Ormond Street, where I worked in the heart failure and transplant program, the largest in Europe. I am a Fellow of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health and have lectured widely around the UK and internationally. I left the NHS in 2022 to work as a Medical Adviser for an international Christian charity. This role is mainly UK based, but involves some travel to East and Southeast Asia.

Am I glad I chose medicine as a career? On balance, yes. Medicine covers a huge variety of specialties and there is room for a wide variety of people, interests and abilities within it. It is well paid after the initial couple of years, and the NHS pension scheme remains one of the best available. It is inevitably a demanding career and a strong work ethic coupled with high levels of resilience is essential but it can also be very rewarding.
