What is UNPLUG? UNPLUG is all about spending one day away from your screens—whether that be your phone, your tablet, computer or your TV. You can do this any day you like during the month of October. “Unplug is a chance to turn off your screen, look up and just think what might happen. You might bump into an old friend, pick up a pen and write that story you’ve been meaning to, or simply just talk to a friend. When children come to visit our farms, they spend the week without televisions, mobile phones, tablets—there are no screens at all. The children have the time and freedom to explore the outdoors, spend time together and learn new skills. We would love more children to experience time without their screens, and adults too! What we’re asking is that you get your friends and family to sponsor your UNPLUG day, whether it is a weekday or a Saturday or Sunday in October. Your sponsorship money will go towards subsidising the 3,200 children that visit us each year for a full week’s stay on a farm.
How You Can Help Us On our three farms across the UK over 3,200 children each year get stuck in and enjoy all that the countryside has to offer them - from sunshine and fresh air, right through to muck and manure! But it is in amongst the muck (come rain or shine) that the magic really happens. Out of the classroom environment and away from the inner city life that is their everyday reality the children are encouraged to try new things, broaden their horizons and overcome their fears. As a result of a fun and hard week’s work, children discover confidence and independence. And as they work together, talk and value one another for what they can achieve, their self-esteem blossoms.
Farms for City Children subsidise each child’s visit by at least £300. This is over half the true cost of a week’s stay. If you can raise £300, you will be securing funding for another child to have a full week of muck and magic on one of our three farms!
Don’t take it from us… When we asked our visiting children and teachers how they felt about being away from screens, they said:

How Do I Get Involved? 1. Choose a day in October to UNPLUG. 2. Print the UNPLUG sponsorship form for offline donations at the end of this pack. 4. Ask your friends and family to sponsor you 5. Enjoy taking part in the UNPLUG day! 6. Get in touch and let us know what you did on your UNPLUG day. Contact details can be found at the end of this pack. 7. Collect any outstanding sponsorship money and send the funds raised to Farms for City Children either by the JustGiving page or a cheque sent to our head office in Exeter or by BACS to our bank account (details on the sponsorship form).
8. We will let you know how much the whole UNPLUG campaign has raised and the difference your sponsorship money has made to the lives of inner-city children. 9. Last but not least, thank you for supporting Farms for City Children! If you decide to UNPLUG on a school day, encourage your friends to join in so that you are all away from your screens together for the day. If you decide to UNPLUG at a weekend, encourage your family to join you and invite friends round.

FAQs Why do I have to UNPLUG for a day? No one is forcing you to UNPLUG for a day, it is your choice, but why not get friends and family to join you so you can undertake the challenge together? What happens if I need to do some work on my computer? That is unavoidable, the reason for the day is not to prevent work and homework being done it is to encourage people not to use screens for entertainment. What is the point of UNPLUG? We want to encourage children and adults alike to spend a day without screens and in turn become less dependent on them for entertainment purposes. We are so easily consumed by social media, iPads and TV, but we also want to appreciate the people and nature around us. How do I raise money by taking part in UNPLUG? We know this will be a challenge, so we’ve included a sponsorship form so you can get sponsorship for taking part. You can also set up a sponsorship page online on JustGiving. What am I supposed to do all day? Be creative! We have provided lots of ideas in this pack, most of which won’t involve any extra money needing to be spent, but we haven’t thought of everything! What else could you come up with?
What if I get bored? Boredom is a good thing as it encourages creativity. Keep going back to the various ideas and see what else you could try. Why are Farms for City Children encouraging people to UNPLUG for the day? Every year we have over 3,200 children who come to one of our three farms for a whole week. They spend the whole week busy being farmers and playing games in the evenings. There are no screens at all and none of them even miss it. We felt that this was a good way to raise much needed funds for the charity as well as challenge our supporters. Is Farms for City Children anti – screens? No not at all, but we felt that it was a good way of raising money and profile of the charity and encourage people to be more creative and interactive just for one day in the year. Is this the first time you have done this? Yes! We are excited for this new campaign and think it resonates well with what we do and our traditional values.
