As the weather begins to warm up, we know winter is over and done with for another year.
Although we’re getting ready to put on our hats and jandals, summer in New Zealand doesn’t always play the game. That’s why the Clobber range is designed for practicality, comfort and durability in any weather – from hot and dry to windy and wet.
Until late 2018 Christopher and Siobhan O’Malley were farming a 600-cow herd in Mid-Canterbury. They’d been doing a pretty good job of it too, winning New Zealand Sharefarmer of the Year in 2017 alongside raising three kids.
But after they sold their herd and made the move to sun-drenched Tasman, an opportunity to join the ever-growing and exciting hops industry was too good to pass up.
The company that Christopher and Siobhan run is Pukeko Pastures and in partnership with Thorn Hops, they’re running 21 hectares of hop gardens nestled in the Motueka Valley. It’s a perfect hop growing climate with ideal soils, optimal temperatures and minimal wind. They currently grow nine varieties of hops and plan to develop another four hectares over the next two years. The volume of hops they can produce is restricted only by the size of their current hop-dryer.
The Thorn family who the O’Malley’s partner with, have been farming hops in the area since 1928. Together they supply NZ Hops — a Nelson based co-operative who export 85 percent of hops harvested to over 30 countries world-wide.
Hops grown in New Zealand have a great reputation internationally and are highly sought after by brewers; yet domestic production accounts for less than one percent of the total world hop output. Hops are impressive plants too, growing up to five metres tall and essentially start from scratch each year as they are cut down for harvest in late February and March.
