Every Card transaction you make in November and December could win a party for your town.
Welcome back to the future
About 12 or 13 years ago, the Farmlands team came up with a fun way to celebrate all our great national and local Farmlands Card Partners and thank our customers for choosing our Card for your purchases. The Concept: The store/town with the biggest increase in spend would win a party in their town with the amazing Topp Twins. Dannevirke, Te Awamutu & Ashburton were the big winners, with a huge amount of fun had by shareholders, Partners & the Farmlands teams in those towns.
This festive season, we're bringing it all back. All you need to know about winning a Party in the Paddock in your town is a little further on in this publication. Our “party” focus this time round is very much a community event, celebrating all that’s cool and amazing about being part of rural New Zealand. Let’s be clear, in these tough times, we’re not trying to get you to spend beyond your means – we want you to take advantage of the cracking offers available from our trusted Card Partners, by choosing to pay with the Card.
There’s another reason why you should whack your purchases in the lead up to the holiday season on your Farmlands Card.
Every time you use your Farmlands Card to pay for goods or services, a small portion of that flows back to Farmlands, strengthening your co-op and helping us be a better rural supplies buying group, able to source sharper Card deals for you to enjoy. Plus, by supporting our Partners, you show them the value of being part of a co-op, give them new business and help keep the local economy ticking over.
So when you’re out and about buying goods for the holidays, your property, or for yourself, choose Farmlands Card Partners and make sure you pay with your Farmlands Card. It benefits local partners, it supports your Co-op and could win your community an awesome party.
Have a safe summer.

A KIWI CLASSIC
Nostalgia
is in the air. With classic movie franchises being rebooted, 80s songs climbing back into the charts and even ‘Y2K fashion’ making a comeback, it’s a great time to revive popular things from the past.
Farmlands is doing just that, resurrecting the ‘Card Party of the Year’ (CPOTY) competition that last took place over 10 years ago.
Although a lot has changed in the world in the last decade, the appeal to Farmlands shareholders of winning a party for their local community is as strong as ever.
The concept is simple: the towns attached to each Farmlands store that have the biggest increase in Card Partner spend during November and December get to host a party for shareholders in the area.
For previous winners Te Awamutu, Dannevirke and Ashburton, CPOTY was a major event in their respective local calendars.
Amy Borlase, Business Manager at Farmlands Dannevirke, says there was huge interest from shareholders when the town won, with the purchase of a shed from building supplies store Tumu getting them across the line.
“We held it at the community hall and there were about 200 tickets. We asked people to apply on a first-come, first-served basis, and it was so popular we had people on a waiting list,” she says.
“It was a great night out. The whole evening was country themed; there were food trucks and we had the Topp Twins doing their routine, followed by music afterwards. The feedback from our shareholders was amazing.”
While the big night was the main focus, there were also lead-up events showcasing Farmlands Card Partners.
“We organised a ladies’ night and a men’s night and invited local Card Partners, encouraging attendees to spend big with their Cards. We wanted to keep it local and support local businesses. It's a great way to help your local store win this year's ‘Party in the Paddock' themed event.”
Farmlands Test Analyst Ryan Lurajud, who was involved in the Ashburton party, says the win was extra special as the store was in direct competition with another midCanterbury co-operative at the time.
“For Ashburton to win it, based on an increase in sales compared to the same time the previous year, was a really good way to show our shareholders in the area that Farmlands was here and growing,” he says.
“Ashburton won by a lot with huge increases in sales. The store staff and the TFOs out on the farms were really pushing it and we drove it pretty hard to win it, which obviously worked.”
The event was held at the Ashburton Racecourse, with a crowd of hundreds watching the Topp Twins with Dai Henwood as the MC.
“There were some Card Partners there, but it wasn’t a selling night, just some time for shareholders to get off farm and relax, catch up with other farmers and mates and enjoy a bit of entertainment.”
Madi Wight, Portfolio Manager – Card at Farmlands, says, “After working closely with our Card Partners for a number of years, it’s clear they’re 100 percent committed to aligning their offers, products, and service solutions to the needs of Farmlands shareholders.
“Whether our Partners are joining us at field days and A&P shows , engaging in activities on-farm, or hosting Farmlands exclusive VIP events, our Partners are dedicated to bringing real value to the communities they serve.
“This translates into a genuine win-win situation for shareholders, our Partners and the Co-operative. It’s what makes me and my team proud, and so excited to be relaunching Card Party of the Year.”
HOW TO WIN THE PARTY
Every shareholder attached to your Farmlands home store can play a part in winning Party in the Paddock.

The party will have a carnival feel, with food and drinks aplenty and great entertainment too.
So whatever you’re planning on spending this festive season, make sure you put it on your Farmlands Card.

Ford Electrified!
Ranger Plug-In Hybrid to join an electrified Ford line up in 2025.
Ford recently announced it will be offering customers a plug-in hybrid version of New Zealand’s best-selling vehicle from early 2025.
The Ranger Plug-in Hybrid will combine the significantly lower emissions of electric driving with the work-ready dependability Farmlands shareholders have come to expect from the Ford Ranger.
“We are very excited to offer the Ranger Plug-In Hybrid to New Zealand,” said Simon Rutherford, Managing Director, Ford New Zealand. “New Zealanders are rapidly transitioning to electrified vehicles to make their operations more sustainable and lower their overall emissions. At the same time, they still need the proven dependability, capability and performance from their Ford Ranger to get jobs done. The Plug-In Hybrid will do that.”
With a targeted maximum braked towing capacity of 3,500 kg, the Ranger Plug-In Hybrid will bring all the towing and payload capability customers expect of the Ranger. What’s more it will also now feature Pro Power Onboard for
the first time, offering portable power for both work and play.
Ranger Plug-in Hybrid will also deliver more torque than any other Ranger, thanks to a 2.3L Ford EcoBoost turbo petrol engine paired with an electric motor and rechargeable battery system. It can be driven in pure electric mode for more than 40 kilometres without using a drop of fuel or producing tailpipe emissions, helping customers save at the pump.
Ranger Plug-In Hybrid also comes equipped with Ranger’s proven fourwheel-drive capability, selectable drive modes and advanced driver safety and driver assist features.
Ford’s Electrified Line Up
Ranger Plug-In Hybrid joins an increasing electrified line up for Ford, including the Mustang Mach-E, the first production Ford ever developed from the ground-up to deliver pureelectric, zero-emission driving. The Mach-E is a great vehicle to add to the garage to share with your Ranger or Everest workhorse, giving you the benefit of fuel-savings to make
those day-to-day trips friendlier on the wallet, while being a stand-out on the road. Farmlands shareholders can also access exclusive pricing on the AWD and GT models until 31 December 2023.
The electrified vehicle line-up across the Ford range includes:
• Ford Puma – Full BEV (coming in 2024) and Hybrid
• Ford Focus – Mild Hybrid
• Ford Escape – Plug-In Hybrid and Hybrid
• Ford Mustang Mach-E – Full BEV
• E-Transit Cargo – Full BEV
• E-Transit Custom – Full BEV (coming in 2024)
• E-Tourneo Custom (9 seat) – Full BEV
Make sure you use your Farmlands Card to get your shareholder discount on the purchase of a new Ford. Visit your local Ford dealership to find out more.

LAKE TO PLATE
Mike Davis of Hunting & Fishing Rotorua shares some handy tips on cooking trout.
For those lucky enough to live, play or holiday in or around the Rotorua region, you’ll know we’re truly blessed with the ability to hunt, fish, and sustainably capture beautiful and delicious unprocessed wild food within minutes of our doorsteps.
Lake Rotoiti is the jewel in the fishing crown, with trout fishing a very popular pursuit. The rainbows tend to be in excellent condition, and you’ll want to take home the fattest, bestconditioned fish you can. These fish will have beautiful bright orange flesh and if you’re lucky enough to catch a trout that is feeding on koura, the meat will be deep red in colour and almost salmon-like.
Once landed, the trout needs to go directly on ice. Hopefully, after your day’s fishing has ended, the flesh of the fish has sufficiently cooled so the meat is not soft but firm, making the job of whoever is on filleting duty that much easier.
Trout can be cooked several ways - crumbed, battered, poached, fried, and of course, smoked. We tend to leave the smaller bullet-shaped fish for the frying pan and smoke up the larger fish that are over 2.5kg.
I always prepare a brine for my fish which is made up of:
• 1 cup white sugar
• 1/2 cup of sea salt
• 1 litre of water
Just bring the water to a quick boil, add sugar and salt until dissolved and let cool before adding the trout fillets. I like to keep it simple and let the fish’s natural flavour do the heavy lifting. The same goes for saltwater species too.
I leave the boneless fillets to soak in the brine overnight before preparing them for the Traeger grill in the morning. Once the fillets leave the brine, they are patted dry with paper towels, brought back to room
temperature and then brown sugar is applied liberally to the flesh.
The Traeger is set to smoke, running at 70 degrees so it doesn’t cook the fish before the smoker does its job, and I tend to fill it up by putting in up to six sides of fish in at a time. The cooking time will vary slightly depending on the ambient air temperature but smoking a batch generally takes around 3 1/2 hours. Sometimes I might up the temp for the last half hour of the smoke just to add a bit more colour and finish to the fillets.
Once out of the Traeger, the fillets are left to sit and return to air temperature when the full flavour of the fish, seasoning and smoke will be at its best. The fillets are then vacuumpacked and will last for weeks.
The results are superb, and your family or mates will love you for it when they savour your hard-earned smoked trout with cream cheese and crackers!
To catch and cook the perfect trout this summer, use your Farmlands Card - online or in-store at Hunting & Fishing NZ.
Tackling Melanoma in rural New Zealand
FMG has teamed up with Melanoma New Zealand to help rural communities fight back against melanoma, with help from Farmlands.
FMG is the rural partner for Melanoma New Zealand, and as part of the partnership they have launched the ‘FMG Spot Check Roadie’, where the Melanoma New Zealand Spot Check Van tours the country offering on-thespot skin cancer spot checks.
New Zealand has the highest rate of melanoma in the world. Each year more than 6,000 Kiwis are diagnosed with the disease, with around 300 dying from it.
FMG Chief Client Officer Glenn Croasdale says those in rural
communities face unique risks and challenges relating to the deadliest form of skin cancer.
“Farmers and growers tend to spend a lot of time outdoors working in the sun, which can raise their risk of developing melanoma,” he says.
“Not only do many Kiwis live a long way from their nearest GP, but it is often challenging to get off farm and find the time to see a doctor. As New Zealand’s leading rural insurer, FMG wanted to help raise awareness of the importance of having regular skin
checks and also save lives along the way through the spot check van.”
In 2022, the FMG Spot Check Roadie checked a total of 759 spots, with 113 suspicious lesions identified.
While they are not full-body checks and do not provide an on-thespot diagnosis, any areas of concern are referred to a GP for further examination.
Melanoma New Zealand Chief Executive Andrea Newland says, “We feel very fortunate to have partnered with FMG and to have their support to increase our reach into rural communities. Together, we are making a real impact on the health and lives of so many rural New Zealanders, and ultimately helping to save lives.”
Farmlands is supporting the initiative by hosting the Melanoma New Zealand Spot Check Van at several of its stores around New Zealand, allowing customers to pop in and get a spot check from its qualified Nurse Educator.
Farmlands recently hosted the Melanoma New Zealand Spot Check Van at its Te Puke store, organised by the FMG Bay of Plenty team. With a sausage sizzle and coffee cart on hand, 24 people had their spots checked that day.
“We are proud to support our Farmlands Card Partner FMG in this project with Melanoma New Zealand,” says Farmlands Commercial Manager Iain O’Rourke.
“The local Farmlands is at the heart of many small rural towns around New Zealand, so this is a great chance for people to get their spots checked while they are shopping for their on-farm supplies.”
Aerolab leads Agdrone revolution
The adoption of Agricultural Drones (Agdrones) around New Zealand is accelerating, driven by bigger models with longer flight times, making it possible to cover sizable acreage faster, more safely and with less impact than other methods.
Aerolab is the leader in this adoption, but it’s not as simple as walking in, buying a drone and getting in the air. It’s a complex industry with multiple levels of training, certification and compliance. Aerolab’s mission is to help you navigate the complexity and get you flying.
The company was founded with a seemingly casual meeting between Aerolab Managing Director Craig Simpson and Steve Wrigley (now an Aerolab shareholder). “The big drone in the back of Steve’s ute instantly caught my attention” says Craig. “Steve told me it was an Agdrone and that they were scarce, due to just one supplier and requiring extensive training, regulations and certification. I saw this as a fantastic opportunity to help grow a fledgling industry.” Helping people navigate these complexities is something Aerolab are experts in.
“Seven years ago, I bought a farm with no power, prompting me to delve into off-grid solar solutions,” says Craig. “The absence of quality advice and user-friendly kits inspired me to design one, which led me to start GridFree, an off-grid solar company. The reality is that people didn’t want solar, they just wanted the easiest way to get power. The success of taking a complex process, simplifying it and making it accessible, laid the blueprint for my approach to the agricultural drone business.”
Agdrones fall under the regulation of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). Currently, acquiring and operating a drone is complicated. Aspiring operators must undergo extensive training, certifications, approvals and practical assessments. All of this needs to be approved by the CAA before even beginning the process of learning effective Agdrone flight techniques.
To solve this complexity, Aerolab created Launchpad. It encapsulates all the elements required to start flying a drone in one comprehensive package. A complete service for acquiring, certifying and operating a drone. Launchpad not only gets you ready to fly, it also ensures you do it in the safest way possible.
The promise - Aerolab will have you airborne sooner than anyone else.

A match made in the provinces
Farmlands Card Partners are not all big nationwide companies. The Co-Operative also has hundreds of small Card Partners dotted throughout New Zealand.
Many of these businesses are steeped in history in their local community, and for some their Farmlands connection goes back decades.
One of those longstanding Card Partners is Shires Fruit and Vege Market in Dannevirke, an iconic business that celebrated its centenary in 2022.
Shires is run by Peter, Suresh and Nayna Patel, who collectively have 130 years' experience in the business. They are the third generation of the Patel family to run the store after it was founded by Chhiba Patel during a visit to New Zealand on his way from India to Fiji.
“The business was started almost by accident by my grandfather,” says Suresh. “He was stopped in Dannevirke on a train ride from Wellington to Wairoa and while he was waiting, he went for a walk around town and saw this building for sale. He decided to buy it, and the rest is history.”
Shires has been a Farmlands Card Partner for over 50 years, and Suresh says the relationship with Farmlands, and the local farming community, is crucial to the business.
“We have known these local farming families for generations. Some of them live up to two hours’ drive from the nearest town, so they need to buy their produce in bulk,” he says.
“We make special deals and offers with our rural customers in mind, and we also do deliveries. We sight all our produce before we buy it, we don’t just order it off a spreadsheet.”
Suresh, who was awarded a Queen’s Service Medal (QSM) for services to the community and sports in 2020, says Shires supports over 100 different community and sports groups every year.
“We don’t have any set criteria for what we will and won’t support, people just come and talk to us, and we see what we can do. I can’t think of the last time we said no when someone came and asked us for help.”
Another long-time Farmlands Card Partner is Frames Footwear in Dunedin, which was founded in the late 1800s by Scottish immigrant John Brown Frame.
Mike Frame is the fourth generation of his family to run the business, along with his brother Greg (shop manager Guy Milner is not a Frame, but has been with the company for 17 years).
Frames has a close connection with Farmlands and offers Cardholders a generous 10 percent discount on their already competitively priced footwear.
“We were one of the original Card Partners with Combined Rural Traders back in 1967. Many of our rural customers are like us: family-owned businesses that have been here for generations,” Mike says.
Starting out as a shoe manufacturer, Frames switched its focus to retail following the economic changes of the 1980s.
The Covid lockdowns saw it boost its online presence, with the help of the fifth generation of Frames in the business: Mike’s son Thomas and Greg’s son Adam, both IT graduates.
“Covid really sped up the move towards online shopping, and we now deliver nationwide.
However, one of the other trends coming out of Covid has been supporting local businesses, and our relationship with Farmlands has been a big part of our success.”
Farmlands CEO Tanya Houghton says, “Part of our support for farmers and growers across the country is making sure they can always shop with Farmlands locally, either at one of our stores, online or through their TFO. Another way we support the rural communities we operate in is by building our network of Card Partners.
“We’ve got an incredible array of national Partners that our customers can visit in-store or shop online with, but we’re equally keen to support and grow the Partners who live and work in the rural communities that are at the heart of our business.
“By partnering with local operations like Shires and Frames, we can directly support their success by encouraging our shareholders to keep their spend in their own towns, while also getting all the advantages of shopping with their Farmlands Card.”
