In 2026, the United Nations recognizes the International Year of the Woman Farmer. This year marks a global acknowledgment of the essential role women play across agrifood systems. For women who work in agriculture every day, what matters most is what they have built: viable businesses, working land and food systems that support their communities year after year, all while advocating for agriculture in leadership positions and committing fully to home and family life.
Across the Northeast and beyond, women farmers shape agriculture in both visible and quietly transformative ways. Some steward operations that have been in their families for generations, while others carved out space for their own ambitions.
