PROPERTY INDEX

ARESEARCHED

s we begin the transition from winter weather to warmer days, tiny buds of color are slowly emerging from the cold ground for a glimpse of sunshine. These first signs of spring are celebrated across the nation, where several flowers are honored with festivals and put on grand display in large-scale gardens. You won’t want to miss out on visiting these iconic locations while America is in bloom!

NEW YORK

In upstate New York, the arrival of spring can be celebrated at the Lilac Festival, hosted annually at Highland Park in Rochester. As the largest free festival of its kind, it showcases more than 500 varieties of blooming lilacs.

The historic park landscape was designed by Frederick Law Olmstead, who is best known for collaborating on the design of Central Park in New York City. He was instrumental in transforming flower garden design for the wealthy into a broader profession of landscape architecture. In addition to Highland Park, Olmstead also designed Genesee Valley Park and Seneca Park.

The hardy, deciduous shrubs–known for their highly fragrant, four-petal flowers–bloom in colors of white, violet, magenta, lilac, and deep purple between the months of April and June. To flower properly, lilacs require cold winter dormancy, so it’s no wonder that snowy Upstate New York offers one of the best displays!

As you stroll Highland Park through the beautiful flowering bushes, browse the multiple art vendors, or enjoy a concert up on the lawn, the sweet fragrance of springtime will accompany you all day long! This vibrant community event is considered a must-see for the spring, so add it to your bucket list of blooms!

GEORGIA

Dubbed the “largest display of daffodils this side of Holland” by Southern Living Magazine, Gibbs Gardens–located in Ball Ground, GA–is truly a staple when celebrating spring flowers! One of the largest private residential gardens in the nation, Gibbs Gardens has been graciously open for public tours since 2012.

The president and founder, Jim Gibbs, grew up surrounded by avid gardeners. His mother was a blue ribbon floral arranger, and other female relatives gardened as well. Mr. Gibbs spent fifteen years traveling to experience gardens of every style and decided to create a legacy of his own. In 1980, Mr. Gibbs purchased a suitable 350±-acre property to bring his vision to life, where he still resides today.

As a representation of rebirth and new beginnings, the daffodil is a classic harbinger of spring. Gibbs Gardens offers a unique experience to stroll through these symbolic flowers on an impressive scale. Over 50 acres are covered in hundreds of varieties of daffodils, totalling over 20 million flowers!

In addition to the yellow trumpet-shaped petals, Gibbs Gardens also features a variety of other flowers, including tulips, cherry blossoms, crepe myrtles, roses, and wildflowers. To round out the experience, the gardens also feature five water lily ponds, a Japanese garden, and even an exact replica of the Monet Bridge!

TEXAS

Native to Texas, the bluebonnet is a beloved symbol of springtime, appearing in fields and along highways from March through April. These delicate sapphire flowers are primarily found in the Texas Hill Country and as far north as Ennis.

Known as the Official Bluebonnet City, Ennis dedicates a month-long celebration to the flower. The Ennis Bluebonnet Trails & Festival features 40 miles of drivable trails, which are some of the oldest in the state. Though blooms can vary year-to-year, the bluebonnets typically peak around the third week of April.

To keep visitors well informed, the Ennis Garden Club monitors the status of the trails and where the best flowers are located, ensuring a positive experience for all. For some of the best photo opportunities set among the bluebonnets, visit Ennis Veterans Memorial Park or Bluebonnet Park, both located on the West Trail.

Additional areas to visit include Muleshoe Bend Recreation Area, where bluebonnets drape the shores of Lake Travis, and Willow City Loop, which is a scenic 13-mile drive through bluebonnet-covered hills.

DAFFODIL PHOTOS COURTESY OF GIBBS GARDENS & THEIR PHOTOGRAPHERS

WASHINGTON

Once a simple two-day festival celebration, the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival has evolved over the years into a month-long, countywide tradition which showcases millions of vibrant tulips.

Nestled in Skagit County in Mount Vernon, WA, four gardens–totalling over 250 acres–come together to grow spectacular tulips and create a unique experience for both locals and visitors alike.

Tulip Valley Farms offers the largest “u-pick” tulip experience on 15 acres, complete with mini highland cows! For an elevated experience, the farm hosts exclusive Saturday night blooms where visitors can marvel at illuminated tulip fields.

Garden Rosalyn is a countryside-style garden with a pond, mountain views, hand-planted tulips, and a boutique feel. Their displays include red, yellow, and pink tulips to “symbolize the valley’s renewal.”

At Tulip Town, guests can board the famous tractor trolley for a nostalgic ride through the blooming fields, which provides a unique perspective of the colorful landscape. Their expansive indoor market features local artisan goods and fresh-cut tulip bouquets, while their beer garden highlights panoramic views of the gardens and valley.

The iconic RoozenGaarde is a third-generation Dutch farm that spans over 50 acres. Curated by an expert team of master growers, visitors can explore more than 200 colorful varieties of tulips and daffodils at this historic landmark, complete with winding paths and an authentic Dutch windmill!

The picture-perfect landscapes and curated gardens of the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival can only be truly appreciated in person, so mark it on your calendar for this April!

CALIFORNIA

From mid-March to early May, California’s state flower is in full bloom. The bright yellow-orange poppies grow across the state, but can be best appreciated at the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve in the western Mojave Desert. It is considered one of California’s most consistent poppy-bearing areas.

Every spring, the Poppy Reserve comes alive with wildflowers, which can be enjoyed by strolling through eight miles of trails. Orange poppies blanket the hillsides along with goldfield, cream cups, and coreopsis, to create a “mosaic of color.”

Less than thirty minutes east, in Lancaster, CA, the annual California Poppy Festival takes place during mid-April to celebrate the state flower. Lancaster boasts some of the most abundant crops of poppies and honors the flower with live entertainment, rides, festival activities, and food vendors.

Other locations to visit include Saddleback Butte State Park, Carrizo Plain National Monument, Chino Hills State Park, Walker Canyon, and Malibu Creek State Park. The Theodore Payne Foundation Wildflower Hotline is a great resource for those wanting to plan a day to appreciate the golden blossoms, as it provides information on current conditions and the best locations to view them.

From coast to coast, spring transforms the American landscape into a celebration of color. Whether it’s strolling through fragrant lilac gardens in upstate New York, driving scenic bluebonnet trails in Texas, or exploring poppy-covered hills in California, each destination offers a unique way to experience the season in full bloom. As warmer days return, there’s no better time to discover the vibrant blooms and experience community traditions that make spring across the country truly unforgettable.
