Anisha Zak Workforce Coordinator My name is Anisha Zak. I graduated from Triton High School in 2004, went on to receive my Bachelor’s Degree from Minnesota State University, Mankato and secured my first full-time job in Owatonna. I gained wonderful work experience in our community over the years and am now in my third year as Workforce Coordinator for the SteeleCoWorks program. Through my role, I serve youth age 16-24 across all of Steele County. I rotate between Owatonna High School, Owatonna Alternative Learning Center, Blooming Prairie High School and Medford High School on a weekly basis during the school year. Most juniors and seniors are referred to me from a school staff member. I set up appointments with the students to provide one-on-one career counseling if the student is unsure of their plan postgraduation. I offer the student multiple ways of exposure to careers here in our own community through tours, job shadows, internships, work experiences and part/full time employment opportunities. If you are a student who is already graduated from high school but still looking for some guidance in your career plan, we can meet anywhere in town to discuss. INDUSTRIAL MAINTENANCE AND MECHANICS Diploma, 72 credits

This program is one of a kind in Minnesota. Machines are getting more costly to maintain and good maintenance workers play a major role in cost control. Students will receive training in the maintenance and repair of industrial equipment including operation of lathes, mills, drills and small tools used for machine repair. The program also focuses on hydraulics, pneumatics, piping, sheet metal, electrical, bearings and seals, blueprint reading, preventative/predictive maintenance, safety and welding. Welding classes include gas, ARC, tig and wirefeed. This program includes preparation for boiler exams. In the first year, students will prepare for a special engineer license exam. Upon successful completion of this exam, students start clocking hours with actual operation of an in-house boiler. In the second year, students will be qualified to apply for and take the Second Class high pressure boiler exam. After graduating, students will hold a Minnesota Steam Engineer Second Class License Grade A or B license. Students will also receive training in the field of predictive/preventative maintenance which will include the use of thermography, laser alignment and vibration analysis. This equipment is used by companies to reduce or eliminate costly machine failures. The Industrial Maintenance & Mechanics program is an ideal choice for students with good mechanical aptitude who take pride in their workmanship. Students can count on plenty of individual attention from instructors with extensive work experience.

MACHINING

WELDING

The class gives students easy access to the equipment and tools of the trade. Students learn to fabricate parts by interpreting blueprints and using precision measuring tools. They will make parts to factory specifications and standards. Lathe and mill operation will be mastered by learning proper machine set up, including material speeds and feeds. Shop safety will be covered and the hazards involved using these machines. This is a hands-on, highly skilled job with many opportunities in the area. Count on gaining practical knowledge in the machining field that employers are looking for.

Students can complete this 32-credit Riverland program to earn a Welding Diploma in two semesters. Class sizes will give students easy access to the equipment and tools of the trade.

Students learn welds in various positions and joint design. Hands-on experience and learning the welding codes will help students work toward becoming a certified welder. Another advantage of the program is that students can maintain their jobs while taking classes. Count on gaining practical knowledge of a vast range of welding processes needed by today’s employers. Financial aid may be available to assist with tuition.

Associate of Applied Science, 83 credits Students can look forward to one-onone attention from excellent faculty in the college’s fully equipped radiography laboratory. They will be well trained in all aspects of the appropriate use of technology and caring for the needs of patients. Radiographers play a key role on the medical team and work in many areas outside the Radiology Department including surgery, emergency room, cardiac and intensive care and patient rooms.

Radiography is a consecutive 6-semester, 24-month, 83-credit program accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). It prepares students to become competent radiologic technologists. Successful students demonstrate an aptitude for science and math, an interest in working with people and technology and the ability to function professionally under stress. The curriculum includes courses in radiation protection, equipment operation and maintenance, image production and evaluation, radiographic procedures and patient care. LOCAL STUDENTS GAIN AT MADE IN OWATONNA DAY On a rainy Wednesday, May 8, 54 students from Owatonna High School, Owatonna’s ALC, and Medford visited local businesses like Viracon and Cybex for the last of the school year’s three Made in Owatonna Days. The day’s theme was manufacturing, engineering, and skilled trades. In addition to the time at Viracon and Cybex, the group also ventured to Riverland Community College for a career fair, then networked with various industry professionals during lunch. Unlike previous Made in Owatonna Days, when a panel of business leaders spoke in question-and-answer format, Wednesday’s program included “speed dating,” where small groups of students rotated among

tables staffed by professionals from companies like Daikin, Wenger, Mohs Construction, and CDI, said Anisha Zak, workforce entry coordinator, who performs one-on-one career counseling for Steele County students ages 1624. “Businesses sell themselves” to students, and this format is “more personal and engaging.” “It’s not as intimidating,” and students “feel like they can really get to know the representatives,” Zak said. “It’s not a big presentation where (students) might feel afraid to raise their hand and ask a question in front of everyone.” Senior Cole Stanley plans to enter the local workforce following graduation in order to help provide for his family, and “hard work had always been a part of my

ethics,” he said. He’d like a career where “I can better society, in general, and see my results.” That day was his first Made in Owatonna Day, and he was struck by the amount of jobs available locally, he said. “It’s good for anyone prepared to work to see those.” He was impressed by the national and international reach of Viracon, from New York City’s One World Trade Center to Singapore’s Reflections at Keppel Bay towers, he said. “A lot of that glass came from Owatonna.” In the manufacturing sector, simply touring facilities can be as important as any information delivered while there, Zak said. Visiting plants erases the “dark, dirty, smelly stereotype (students) might have” about factories.

Stanley has already benefited from hands-on work experience through his internship with Federated Insurance, where he works in inventory and purchasing, he said. Unlike “most kids” Stanley’s age, who typically work in restaurants or retail, he’s been able to grasp a profession “outside of customer service.” “I’m taking it one day at a time, but so far, so good,” he said of the internship. “It’s another opportunity to learn, and as a student, you always look for that.” Among that day’s attendees were 11 ALC students, who expressed interest in manufacturing, engineering, and skilled trades when Hayley Steinberg, the ALC’s guidance counselor, visited classrooms to discuss the latest Made in Owatonna Day, she said. “A majority of our students work” while also attending the ALC, and “most plan on entering career fields after graduation.” The preponderance of those students also interested in remaining in Owatonna for employment, so “this is great exposure,” Steinberg said. “So many of them weren’t aware of these opportunities before.” Interestingly enough, the ALC contingent is always different depending on the Made in Owatonna Day theme, as some students are interested in Wednesday’s careers, while others have their eyes on health care, education, or social services, she said. “There’s not a lot of overlap.” “It’s cool these businesses are here not to compete with one another, but to expose (students) to all the opportunities in town,” Zak said as she observed the “speed dating” portion of Made in Owatonna Day. “Everyone wants to be known.” “All the companies” Stanley learned about that day “have a sense of pride in being in Owatonna,” he seconded. “No matter the field, you’re still part of the community.” Hot Jobs, Cool Companies | 41

During the inaugural Steele Co. Works Signing Day on the evening of May 1 inside Owatonna High School, several Steele County high school seniors were able to celebrate their commitments to their immediate — and future — careers. Steele Co. Works is a partnership with the Owatonna Area Chamber of Commerce and Tourism, Owatonna Workforce Development, Inc., United Way of Steele County, and high schools in the county to connect local youth with job opportunities. During Wednesday’s program, speakers from local businesses, Steele Co. Works, and Owatonna Public Schools discussed the benefits of this burgeoning partnership and its value to schools, employers, and students. While “we know there will be more” in the future, nine students were formally recognized that evening, and “we’re really excited about this,” said Brad Meier, president and CEO of the Owatonna chamber. students heading to colleges, “we think it’s just as important, if not more, for you to be working in our community.” It’s “easy to get so caught up thinking everyone has to go to college,” but “the ultimate goal of every parent is to have their child working, making a good wage, and being happy,” said Anisha Zak, workforce entry coordinator, who performs one-on-one career counseling for Steele County students ages 16-24. “The world is changing all the time,” so ideas of students regarding their careers are also “constantly changing.” “I’m happy to be a part of their journey, and it’s been a pleasure to work alongside them,” she added. “I’m really passionate about the work I do with them.” The students lauded that “have a vision, something you know you want to do, and you’re executing it,” said Mark Randall, then OHS principal. It takes many other students “a long time to figure that out,” but “you have that desire (already), and I think it’s pretty awesome.”

They’re paving the way for the future and serving as role models for younger students, Randall said. “You guys are leaders — I see that — and you should be proud of yourselves.” It’s incumbent upon schools to teach more than academics, but “work skills,” too, he said. “We see the potential in you, and the potential in our school.” “Your potential is simply untapped,” seconded Jeff Elstad, Owatonna’s superintendent. “We teach you skills, then give you an opportunity to show people you know how to do it” through business partnerships. “I’m so happy to live and work in a community where businesses support our kids,” Elstad added. “We don’t even have to knock on doors,” but, rather, businesses ask, “how can we help?” “We’re so appreciative of our business partners,” Randall echoed. “You’ve opened up your doors to students.” Wenger Corporation is among those businesses, because the company hopes all students have

She’ll begin full-time employment at AmesburyTruth this summer. “It’s really scary going into it, walking onto a factory floor, getting a key card,” etc., and while Day “hoped for the best,” she “expected the worst,” but,

instead, she was “pleasantly surprised” that it was “way better than I expected,” she said. “Everyone was super-helpful and welcoming.” AmesburyTruth sent representatives to the high school’s academic support time, piquing Day’s interest, and then Zak helped connect her with the company for employment, she said. “It’s been all on-the-job training, every step of the way,” and “they’ll let you work as long as you want.” That day’s cadre of students is “destined for greatness,” because — among other things — “you know what hard work is,” Elstad said. “Education is more than taking tests or learning out of books,” but, also “injecting relevant, authentic experiences” into student lives. To watch students sign letters of intent for employment Wednesday was “simply awesome,” Elstad concluded. Days like this are “why I do this job.”

In fact, three of 2018’s four interns were working full time at Federated. The internships are paid, and run from late January into June, Rathai said. And “they are doing actual tasks,” not merely “jobshadowing.” Interns can apply classroom knowledge in the workforce, they’re exposed to a business environment geared toward their learning, they can ameliorate their understanding of corporate (generally) and Federated (specifically) culture, and they can pick up feedback on their skills from experienced professionals, she said. Federated is able to “invest in the next generation” and “develop future talent,” so the company is “definitely” planning to continue the program in the future. Alexa Willert, whose mother and sister currently work at Federated, was one of three Federated interns on stage Wednesday. She currently works in the underwriting document services. Willert’s business teacher told her about the internship opportunity, and she’s “really enjoying it,” she said. “Everyone
