K
amp Dels is a third-generation family campground resort on Lake Sakatah in Waterville. The Pope family has been running it since 1955, and current owner Grant Pope says their whole job is giving other families the kind of summer memories that bring them back year after year — many of their guests are third-generation, too. And it’s as beloved as ever, voted the 2026 Best Resort/Campground in the 2026 Best of SoMinn Scene contest. Kamp Dels is a full resort vacation that happens to be a campground. Guests stay their way — tenting and RV sites, fully furnished cabins where you just show up and unpack, or a seasonal site that’s ready every weekend all summer. Every registered guest gets free access to our 38,000-square-foot waterpark, 32-foot slides, a climbing wall over the pool, diving boards, and a dedicated splash area for little kids. “We sit right on Lake Sakatah, so there’s fishing, pontoons, boats, paddleboats, and canoes. On land it’s our petting zoo, mini golf, three playgrounds, sports courts, a driving range, a catch-and-release fishing pond, an arcade, and tram rides around the grounds. And we program the whole summer — every week from Memorial Day to Labor Day has its own theme with planned daily activities and live entertainment, so families never run out of things to do. Food’s covered on-site at Perry’s Paradise and our camp store. Basically: a family shows up with nothing but their kids, and we handle the rest,” Pope said. With all of these family-centered activities, Kamp Dels draws in from all over Southern Minnesota and beyond. “Families with kids — that’s who we’re built for. Most of our guests come from

What we’re proudest of is how many come back — a big share of our guests return every summer, our seasonal families are here every weekend, and we now welcome kids whose parents and grandparents camped here. For a lot of families, Kamp Dels is just part of their summer tradition,” Pope said. Pope doesn’t take all the credit himself but spoke eloquently about the people around him and how they are the ones who make Kamp Dels so special. “Our staff, hands down. A lot of them are locals which shows how amazing our local communities really are - our guests — kids who grew up camping here and wanted to work here. We treat our team like family because for three generations, it literally has been. Guests feel that. You can’t fake it and you can’t buy it,” Pope said. Tradition and longevity also play a huge part in making Kamp Dels a special place, according to Pope. “Seventy-one years, one family. My grandparents started this in 1955, and we now welcome guests whose grandparents camped here. When it’s your family name on the sign, cleanliness and safety aren’t policies — they’re personal. That, and there’s simply more to do here than you can fit in one trip. Between the waterpark, the lake, the petting zoo, and a full schedule of activities and entertainment every single week, families leave with a list of things they didn’t get to — and that’s usually why they book next summer before they’ve even left,” Pope said. For the families and guest that experience Kamp Dels, Pope has one wish for them: “Memories that last. The best compliment we get is a parent telling us their kids ask to come back before they’ve even pulled out of the driveway. If a family leaves closer than
they arrived — that’s the whole point,” Pope said. Pope also said that being named one of the Best Of for the Southern Minnesota Scene is something he doesn’t take for granted. “It means a lot because it’s our neighbors voting. We’ve been ranked nationally, and that’s great — but Best Of Southern MN is the people who actually live here, the families we see every summer. That hits different. This community has supported our family for 71 years, and an award voted on by them means the most,” Pope said. ocated on Highway 15 on the edge of New Ulm, Joe’s Campers has been a go to destination in Southern Minnesota (and beyond) for RV trailers since it opened more than four decades ago. New Ulm’s Joe Lamecker and his wife Mavis started the business at a location in the downtown of his hometown in 1980 and later moved to Joe’s Campers present location. In 1998, their son Jerry Lamecker joined the business and he currently oversees the company that sells a wide range of travel trailers, fifth wheels, tent trailers, utility trailers and destination trailers along with the popular Ice Castle Fish Houses. Some of the new inventory that they carry include Rockwood, Alpine and Cardinal along with a full selection of used trailers for purchase. Joe’s Campers also welcomes
trade-ins for customers looking to upgrade to a newer model. In addition, Joe’s Campers offers a full service repair shop along with a variety hitches for trucks to pull your trailer. Joe’s Campers showroom is 3,500 square feet and it allows for customers to view trailers indoors in comfort during the colder winter months. “We are very busy and we have a big parts store,” Joe Lamecker said. “We probably have the largest selection of parts in Southern Minnesota in stock.” The reputation that Joe’s Campers has build over the years has created a strong business both locally and across the nation thanks to the growth of online marketing and sales. “We go all over the United States. We sell a lot of trailers on the internet…some of the people who we sell to we never meet. We sell to them over the internet or by email and they have a freight company come and pick the trailer up from us,” Joe Lamecker said.

urvey says … Northfield’s annual Vintage Band Festival tops ‘em all. Ranked “Best Music Festival” in Best of SoMinn’s 2026 contest, VBF has more than a majority of votes in its corner — it has statistics. After approximately 2,300 people attended 2025’s one-day festival, which is centered in Northfield’s picturesque and historic Bridge Square, 98% of those completing a post-event survey indicated they’d return for a future VBF. And 80% of survey respondents had previously attended one or more VBF. Is there any entity that wouldn’t kill for a 98% approval rating? “People of all ages can enjoy this festival,” said Joy Riggs, VBF board secretary. “It’s entertaining and free to attend; there are no barriers to participation and no charge for any of the concerts. “You can come and go or park a chair and stay to watch and listen all day. We welcome everybody.” Twenty years in, VBF has an international reputation and a hearty regional following. After debuting with a four-day run in 2006, VBF’s schedule deviates from an

all-day Saturday festival most years (with at least seven different performances) to an all-hands-on-deck, four-day festival every few years (usually presenting 35 bands and 100 or more concerts to roughly 13,000 people). “This is a four-day festival year,” said Riggs of the Thursday, July 30 through Sunday, Aug. 2 schedule that’s brimming with music, cultural and historical elements and even a touch of sport. The latter comes in the form of a vintage “base ball” game, scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, between the Rochester Roosters and the St. Croix Base Ball Club. Situated on Carleton College’s Bald Spot just a few blocks from the non-stop music, the teams will wear period uniforms and play according to the game’s original 1864 rules. Even there, a band will play; RAVE Brass, a VBF stalwart, will entertain at the base ball site. Another exciting 2026 VBF feature, made possible by Southeast Minnesota Arts Council and Minnesota State Arts Board grants and funds from the Northfield Rotary Club, is a four-hour sequence titled “Music and Democracy: Living History in America.” Set in Northfield’s historic Central Park, the program will run from 9:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. and include music ranging from the Imnizaska Drum Group to the Northfield Suffragist Singers to The Doughboy Foun-

dation’s American Expeditionary Forces Headquarters Band from Washington, D.C. Costumed actors and speakers will provide brief narrations to guide audiences through the U.S.A.’s historical progression, with one highlight being an appearance by premier Teddy Roosevelt impersonator, Adam Lindquist—who happens to be a Northfield resident. “And we want to involve younger families so there will be an ‘America’s 250 All-Ages Bike Parade’ at 1 p.m.,” said Riggs, mentioning VBF provides balloons and crepe paper to decorate trikes, bikes and scooters. In keeping with VBF’s “vintage” theme, the parade around the park square will be led by Linda Wasner atop a circa-1890s velocipede. At VBF, watch for two international bands: Drachenfelser Musikanten from Germany and Austria’s Moritz & Company. Brass, jazz, salsa, Irish pipes: name your genre and enjoy it at VBF. By KOSMO ESPLAN oe’s Sports Café has been a staple of the southern Minnesota diner/bar scene since 2006. However, if you really want to dig into the history books (or internet pages), the establishment itself was started in 1999 by Mike Tupa. Initially stuck in a perpetual cycle of new names (including the Peppermill and Cloud 9), the location’s notoriety gained more stability when new operators took over in 2006 and the moniker it possesses today was cemented. Boasting a delightfully casual atmosphere, a menu packed with appealing American fare, and a bar perfectly arranged to pair the evening’s drink of choice with a televised game, Joe’s easily inhabits the sports bar energy. “We are known for being a burger restaurant,” explained manager Aynsley Bert. “That’s hands-down our most com-

monly ordered thing here.” In addition to 100% fresh handcrafted burgers, their website additionally boasts of the diner’s genuine Broaster chicken and slow-roasted BBQ ribs. “Our walleye fingers are also a big hit,” mentioned Bert. A strong roster of appetizers, enticing entrees, and a variety of sandwiches round out the vast ordering possibilities. When asked about the fan environment that remains a prevalent trait of the restau-

rant, Bert said that “a healthy mix of both” enthusiastic cheering and less boisterous merriment exists. Vikings and Wild games typically bring the most noise, not disproving any stereotypes about Minnesota’s purple blood and love of the ice. However, Bert noted that “even some of the FIFA games” have attracted the emotional environment of being an invested sports fan. When asked about a particularly memorable sports game experience at the bar, Bert mentioned that the Super Bowl is a regularly dependable night filled with the sounds of sports lovers.
Located on the northwest side of Faribault (at 1510 7th St. NW), Joe’s remains a fun, friendly, and flavorful site across the landscape of Minnesota sports bars. Bert, who’s worked at the eatery since 2021, wholeheartedly agrees. Inquired about the favorite part of her job, Bert didn’t skip a beat before stating, “Our customers. We love them.” The enjoyment of seeing “regulars” and loyal customers “makes coming to work feel a little less like work,” she also mentioned. In a land populated by diners and bars, earning the title Best Sports Bar in Southern Minnesota is no small feat. very dish is made fresh and served with care for a truly enjoyable experience,” reads a description on the website of George’s Vineyard, a locally owned eatery that’s been a longtime favorite not only in Northfield but throughout the region. Its enduring popularity could be due to that “freshly made” boast being not just a puffy advertising declaration but a fact. “We do things the right way; we prep it all in house and don’t store-buy our [food] products,” said Steve Gounaikis, 42. Their chicken wings (boneless or bone-in, your choice), for instance, aren’t dumped from a freezer bag into a deep-fat fryer. “No, they come in fresh and we brine ‘em for 24 hours, bread ‘em ourselves and cook ‘em up here,” Gounaikis confirmed. And the chicken tenders and fried chicken, the latter of which is available either as a four-piece stand-alone or as a quarter- or

half-dinner served with jojo potatoes, garlic toast and salad, are similarly breaded inhouse. “The chicken is a raw product we prep, fry and serve fresh,” confirmed Gounaikis. “It’s not in a holding warmer but is cooked to order every time.” That commitment to culinary freshness likely explains why George’s Vineyard emerged as “Best All-Around Restaurant” in the 2026 Best of SoMinn contest—as well as notching recognition for Best Wings, Best Patio, Best Pizza, Best Lunch Spot and a couple other related honors. Gounaikis assumed ownership of George’s Vineyard about six years ago from his parents, Phillip and Patti, who’d founded the restaurant in 2002. He’s simultaneously grateful and a bit overwhelmed by all the kudos that are flowing his way. “To get seven awards—that’s something special,” he acknowledged, quickly crediting his staff for the consistency and quality which increasingly define George’s Vineyard. “It’s a big team effort, and we’re got a really good team with a lot of guys who’ve been here quite a long time,” Gounaikis said. “We mesh well and everyone’s on the

exact same page. It makes it easy when everyone knows what they need to be doing.” Achieving “Best All-Around Restaurant” status means that George’s Vineyard does a lot of things right, like having smaller portions of the same great adult menu items for children’s meals (“The biggest is the spaghetti with our house-made sauce, which we start by sautéing veggies and take all the way to the finished product,” Gounaikis said), offering a variety of flavor profiles in lunchtime grinders and being true to his family’s own Grecian roots with delicious gyros and Greek salad and pizza choices. Oh, and making George’s Vineyard a place where other families can still genuinely connect. “We have something here for everyone to enjoy but we’re still old-school,” said Gounaikis. “There are zero TVs inside our establishment so a family or couple can come in,
sit down and talk to one another without distractions. Our environment allows for better conversations and there’s something home-like about it.” Friendly table service lets guests focus on the people around them and the food before them. Just talking to Gounaikis about his pizzas, pastas, chicken, gyros and multiple appetizers is enough to make anyone hungry. But don’t worry; Gounaikis and the entire George’s Vineyard team are up to the task of satisfying your sharpest cravings. “We’re busy, constantly prepping food throughout the day during lulls and using every opportunity to accomplish more tasks,” he assured. “It’s a love-of-the-game kind of thing. “Knowing people appreciate and recognize what we do here is exciting to all of us. earing is a key part of life for anyone. Thus, the responsibility of ensuring the functionality of people’s hearing is equally important. Two southern Minnesota institutions in particular have excelled at this skill: Personal Hearing Care in St. Peter and Amy Swain Hearing Center in Owatonna split the 2026 Best Hearing Care Service title as part of the Best of SoMinn Scene contest. Personal Hearing Care is a relatively recent addition to Minnesota’s lineup of hearing centers. Established in March of 2024 by Dr. Amanda Bohn, the location specializes in putting their clients’ needs forward and allowing that input to drive their mission. Tailoring their actions to each patient’s specific situation has panned out well for the St. Peter location, consistently receiving high marks for its personalized experience and Dr.
Bohn’s receptive approach. Dr. Bohn herself, originally from Minnesota, earned her doctorate in audiology from A.T. Still University — Arizona School of Health Sciences. Initially employed in audiology departments at Mankato, St. Paul, and Minnetonka, Dr. Bohn serves today on a number of Audiology Academies. Taking the leap to branching out independently when she formed Personal Hearing Care over two years ago, Dr. Bohn’s entrepreneurial choice has worked exceedingly well both for her and PHC’s many patients. Sitting on 3rd Street in St. Peter, Personal Hearing is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Monday through Thursday and can be reached at 507-508-6951. Their patient-oriented care is the undoubted primary factor that spurred its patients to name it southern Minnesota’s Best Hearing Care Service. The various branches of Amy Swain Hearing Centers have been beacons of hearing excellence throughout Minnesota for 20 years. The Hearing Centers’ namesake, Dr. Amy Swain, studied at the University of Minnesota and became further interested in audiology when she took a job “testing hearing in chinchillas in a hearing research lab”. From there, she worked “for a large company in Rochester that [specialized in] hearing aids” before heading into private practice. Originally spearheaded in 2006 by Dr. Swain, the Hearing Centers today boast a staff of three audiologists and a breadth of hearing experience. Additionally, Dr. Swain mentioned how the Hearing Centers “offer many different brands of hearing aids” and “open storefronts to help with troubleshooting.” While hosting three other locations in Austin, Waseca, and Rochester, the Best Hearing Care Service designation was specifically applied to the Owatonna branch of Amy Swain Hearing Centers. Dr. Swain noted that the Owatonna location is open 4.5 days a week and offers a free hearing aid consultation for interested patients. Positioned on

ENCAUSTIC WORKSHOP
PAINTING WITH WAX WITH JODI REEB FRIDAY, AUGUST 28TH, 10 AM - 4 PM. ADULT CLASS (18+) In this exciting one-day Encaustic workshop, you will explore creating translucent, layered paintings only achieved with molten beeswax on Ampersand Encausticbord. A brief history and description of Encaustic painting will be discussed as well as basic supplies and tools, safety, and preparation of supports, including application of grounds and fusing. All levels welcome, and all supplies, including R&F Paints, Ampersand Encausticbord, and Silverbrush Ltd. brushes are provided.
