elcome to the 2020 season for the Paradise Center for the Arts! We are thrilled to bring you an exciting line-up of entertaining shows and educational opportunities made possible by Minnesota State Arts Board and SEMAC grants, and the generous gifts of businesses and individuals. In an effort to bring you the highest caliber shows and classes, we are shifting from a calendar-year schedule, which runs January through December, to a program-year schedule. This means our season will now run from July through June. Watch for an updated season guide this summer, which will outline our 2020-21 season. In 2019 we began offering more family-friendly programming, and made our shows more accessible through enhanced ADA compliance, sensory training, and reduced ticket prices. Our Family Fun and Film series has been a huge hit, and we will continue it in 2020. We will also continue to offer sensory-friendly performances. These judgement-free and “shush-free” performances are for anyone on the autism spectrum or with sensory sensitivities, and include leaving the house lights on and minimal surprising/loud sounds. We also have a quiet room and sound-canceling headphones available. The last year has been one of transition for the Paradise, and as we look to 2020, we are excited for the future. Our 2020 season is filled with opportunities for you and your family to tap into your inner creative selves and engage with our artsloving community. Whether you want to take pottery class or experience the power of live theater, we look forward to creating art with you in 2020!

Chris Koza is a composer and performer based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Both solo and with his band Rogue Valley, he has supported and shared the stage with artists such as Brandi Carlile, Ingrid Michaelson, The Jayhawks, and Neko Case, among others. His music appears regularly on ABC’s General Hospital and 60 Minutes, and his song Be Wild will be featured as the soundtrack to an upcoming State of Minnesota tourism campaign. His song (Rogue Valley) The Wolves and the Ravens was featured in Ben Stiller’s film The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.

The music Chris produces is rooted in Americana but heeds its own spirit. Born out of folk, country, storytelling and rock ’n roll, Chris both honors and builds on Americana traditions by incorporating a unique popmusic sensibility, subtle synthesizers, rich harmonies, and imaginative production choices. “These Shining Lives” is inspired by the actions of real women in the 1920s. It tells the largely forgotten story of the “Radium Girls.” Catherine Donohue and her coworkers worked in factories painting glow-in-the-dark watch dials, only to later be diagnosed with severe radiation poisoning. This play chronicles the strength and determination of these women considered expendable in their day. The play is not a tragedy but a triumphant celebration of these women’s battles to win against a company that lied to them. Come cheer these heroines on.

Marquee Childrens Theatre Season Thanks to a SEMAC grant, the Paradise Center for the Arts is excited to offer a 2020 Marquee Children’s Theatre Program! Four different children’s theatre camps will be offered for two different age groups. Each camp ends with a community-theatre style production for the public. Camps and performances will provide high quality arts experiences for children and youth through the process of learning acting skills, actor and audience etiquette, and most importantly, having FUN!

Acting Fun for Little Ones (ages 4 - 7)

The would-be elf is raised, unaware that he is actually a human, until his enormous size and poor toy-making abilities cause him to face the truth. With Santa’s permission, Buddy embarks on a journey to New York City to find his birth father and discover his true identity. Faced with the harsh reality that his father is on the naughty list and that his half-brother doesn’t even believe in Santa, Buddy is determined to win over his new family and help New York remember the true meaning of Christmas.
