Safe learning plan
On Thursday, July 30, Governor Walz and the Minnesota Department of Education announced that school district operations for the 2020-2021 school year will be driven by county-level virus metrics provided by the Minnesota Department of Health. We will be using the tools provided by the Minnesota Department of Health for guidance as to what will be the safest way for our district to start school and move forward throughout the school year. It is clear that our local collective effort to contain the spread of COVID-19 will determine whether or not students can attend school inperson.

As a part of the Governor’s Executive Order 20-82, we are prepared to offer a full distance learning option for any family that chooses to participate in this learning delivery
model. For planning purposes, @Owatonna761 parents were asked to complete a form by August 7, indicating whether or not this was their preference.
We have used the information collected, and the five goals provided by the Minnesota Department of Education listed below to determine our Owatonna Safe Learning Plan.

In this scenario, all students would learn from home, breakfast and lunch meals would be provided at select sites, and childcare would be available for grades K-5. Note: the form sent to parents earlier this
month allowed them to choose the option of distance learning if we are starting the school year with in-person or hybrid learning.
Owatonna Public Schools will continue to monitor the community and school-level impact of COVID-19 on a regular basis in consultation with public health to de-

Because of the unusual start to the school year, the school board approved some changes to the school calendar to allow for additional preparation time for our staff. Two teacher training/planning days have been added on August 31 and September 1. The first day of school will be September 2 for grades 9-12, September 3 for grades 6-8, and September 8 for grades K-5.

NEW HIGH SCHOOL Before School Interviews
Owatonna Public Schools is committed to creating strong student and family relationships and fostering a positive first experience. Students in grades K-5 will start the 2020-2021 school year on Tuesday, September 8 to allow time for before school interviews to take place.
Before school interviews allow teachers to meet individually for 30-40 minutes with students and parents before the start of the school year. All kindergarten students will sign up for an individual 30-minute interview conference time on either Thursday, August 27 or Wednesday, September 2. All students, grades 1-5 will sign

School Board Meeting Calendar Owatonna Public Schools board meetings are held the second and fourth Monday of each month at 5:30 PM in the Board Room at the District Office (515 West Bridge Street) with some exceptions. Typically, the second Monday of the month is a work session and the fourth Monday of the month is the regular business meeting. • All board meetings are open to the public except those specifically permitted by law to be closed for discussion of identified issues such as negotiation strategy or litigation (see policy 205 on our website, Open Meetings and Closed Meetings)
