Northfield is known for many things. Its two beautiful and world renowned institutions, Carleton College and St. Olaf College. Our vibrant arts community which comes out in our theaters, art galleries and music venues. And last, but certainly not least, our history, which includes the famous bank raid attempt by the James-Younger Gang in 1876. On top of that we have great schools, miles of trails and Cannon River frontage, a farmers’ market featuring local food, crafts and artisan vendors, parks with playgrounds, good roads, safe neighborhoods and caring people. t roughly 2:00 p.m., September 7, 1876, eight men rode into town, intent on robbing the First National Bank of Northfield. It would later be called a textbook James-Younger bank robbery, and it began with three members of the gang entering the bank and announcing that it was a holdup. The three desperados ordered three bank employees to open the

“Get your guns boys, they’re robbing the bank” 4 4 HISTORY

safe, but were told the vault was locked and couldn’t be opened. On the street, local citizens began to arm themselves when a merchant discovered the robbery in progress. Upon their discovery, two gang members sprang to their horses and began shooting and yelling at the townspeople to leave the street. This forced the other three robbers into the fray. The first to fall was a Swedish immigrant named Nicholas Gustafson, who remained on the street because he did not understand English. The battle lasted only seven minutes, but when it was over two robbers lay dead in the street and two more
were badly wounded. Six outlaws fled south, and the largest manhunt at that time in U.S. history ensued. The Younger brothers were captured and Charlie Pitts was killed near Madelia, MN. Jesse and Frank James escaped the posse and made it to Missouri. The heroes that day included J.S. Allen, A.R. Manning, Henry Wheeler and others. But the biggest hero was Joseph Lee Heywood, who died because he would not open the bank vault and betray the trust of the bank owners and his fellow Northfield citizens. It is the extraordinary courage of these townspeople that we honor on the weekend after Labor Day each year during Defeat of Jesse James Days.
HISTORY - In 1855, John
Wesley North settled in what would become Northfield for the great hydrologic power potential and abundant natural resources. North built a saw mill, then a grist mill and a bridge. In 2015, Post Consumer Brands purchased MOM Brands (Malt-O-Meal) and continues to operate a mill in the same location established by North. In fact, Northfield is the only place in the world where Malt-O-Meal hot cereal is produced!

Riverwalk Market Fair
Take one stroll through Northfield, Minnesota, with its many sculptures and sidewalks engraved with poetry, and you’ll know you’re in a place where the arts take center stage. Whether you’re inclined toward cultural museums and fine art galleries, upbeat music and live theater, or simply discovering the innovative creations of true craftspeople, Northfield has it and can’t wait to share it with you. Northfield Arts Guild Let’s start with the most obvious entry on this list. The Northfield Arts Guild, founded in 1961 by artists of various disciplines, is the purveyor of all-things artsy in the fair town of Northfield. And The Guild is far from a one-trick pony. The Northfield Arts Guild offers more than 100 events annually and 40 weekly art classes. From art galleries to exhibits, from classes to dancing, from theater in the Northfield Arts Guild Theater to theater in Central Park, there’s a little bit of everything offered by The Guild for a fan of art. In 2013, more than 1,200 local artists’ work was exhibited, more than 400 students took classes and 31,000 people passed through the doors of the Northfield Arts Guild.

Riverwalk Market Fair
Across the Cannon River to the west stands historic St. Olaf College, where the performing and visual arts are a big deal. St. Olaf embraces music, theater, dance and the visual arts. If you can score tickets, the renowned St. Olaf Christmas Festival is an experience that can’t be described. The show is so revered, it airs annually on Twin Cities Public Television. Elsewhere, St. Olaf offers a vibrant art showcase and is well-known for its innovative theater productions and dance performances. The Flaten Art Museum is a must visit for an art lover.
The Northfield area is full of talented artists and artisans. Each Saturday morning, from May through October, Bridge Square in the heart of Northfield is turned over to vendors and a rotating list of musicians who kick off the weekend with warmth. From handmade jewelry to woodworking, pastries to produce, and a guest musician each week, the lovely Riverwalk Market Fair is always a treat to peruse and enjoy.
Sidewalk Poetry When walking around Northfield, don’t forget to look down or you might miss the city’s famed sidewalk poetry! The Arts and Culture Commission launched the Sidewalk Poetry Project in 2011. Each February, a competition is held whereby local residents may submit up to two short poems for consideration. Beginning in May, the winning poems are installed in sidewalks throughout the community, followed by a celebratory Capstone Event held the third Thursday of August in Northfield’s downtown Bridge Square.
When you’re not looking down at Northfield’s sidewalk poetry, simply look around and you’re bound to see the many beautiful sculptures placed around town.
Out and about on the town The historic Carnegie Northfield Public Library, recently renovated and heralded as the best public library in the state, by WCCO viewers, is art in itself through its architecture. Inside, a wonderful literary collection awaits. Outside, a rotating sculpture created by high school students can be found on the corner of Division Street and Third Street. If you make it to Northfield City Hall, enjoy the rotating works from local artists. It truly is a citywide effort and appreciation.
Local Venues with Live Music
Carleton College Carleton College’s arts calendar is nothing short of exceptional, featuring a wide array of concerts, film screenings, and theater productions. Also, be sure to check out Carleton’s Perlman Teaching Museum, which emphasizes the role that art plays in posing questions about life. The museum offers two impressive galleries and fully equipped support space.

Live music can be found almost every day of the week in downtown Northfield. From Irish, jazz, and bluegrass jam sessions to piano balladeers and original indie rock, there’s something for everyone. Head to the Contented Cow to catch performances at their indoor or outdoor stage. You’ll find the Tavern Lounge, Froggy Bottoms, Imminent Brewing, and Tanzenwald Brewing Company rocking most weekend nights.

Most folks are aware of the two prestigious colleges that anchor Northfield’s east side (Carleton College) and west side (St. Olaf College). But did you know both colleges sport outstanding hills for premium sledding? For years, locals have taken advantage of the easy-to-access hills to wear out their kids and get the best sledding south of the river. Head over to Old Main at St. Olaf (off of Lincoln St. S.) or Bell Field at Carleton (east side of campus) to sled the winter away. Enjoy it while you can, because the trek up the hills will catch up with you.

Snowshoeing trails are abundant when snow conditions are right. This park is comprised of the largest remnant of Big Woods vegetation in Minnesota. The rolling hills and valleys are traversed by Prairie Creek with its picturesque waterfalls. The homes and neighborhoods of Northfield are a fascinating blend of the historic, traditional and contemporary; and new developments have remained sensitive to facilitating community connections. Randolph agriculture teacher Edward Terry has been a teacher for nearly 50 years. Terry, who now teaches on a part-time basis while remaining a full-time farmer, received recognition for his instruction by being named the Minnesota Outstanding Agriculture Teacher of the Year in July in Brainerd. The award covers ag teachers at the high school and college level along with farm management instructors. He was the first part-time ag instructor to be selected for the honor. “It’s very much a peer process,” he said. A 1964 Northfield High School graduate, Terry’s first ag teaching job was from 1968-74 in Farmington. “I had a good experience with my ag teachers in Northfield, and so I went to col-
lege and got a degree in teaching high school agriculture,” he said. Following his father’s retirement from farming in 1974, Terry and his brother, Dave, assumed control over the operation. Terry then took a three-year break before he was contacted about the Randolph ag teaching position for the 1977-78 school year. “They finally wore me down, and I sat down with my wife and my brother, and we decided we’d find a way to make it work, to give these kids opportunities,” he said. Today, Terry is the school’s FFA advisor and instructs a core curriculum that includes a introductory course, and classes on forestry and conservation, animal science, plant and soil science, and farm power, and mechanics. Terry, who will be 74 by the time this school year ends, says he still enjoys both of his jobs. “I feel good,” he said. “Kids are good. We
have good community support here. We have a strong superintendent who is very supportive.” The fulfillment Terry gets on the job comes from seeing his students develop, grow and achieve through the school’s FFA program. Throughout his more than 40 years at the district he has taught town leaders and major players in the ag sector. The evolution of the farming industry during Terry’s teaching career is hard to fathom. In 1968, items like GPS systems and GMOs were not on the radar. Those changes to the industry have forced Terry to adapt. Despite the changes to the industry, including the decrease in the number of small farms, Terry said teaching ag courses at the high school level remains important.
Bridgewater Township on Wednesday approved a three-year annexation agreement with Northfield. The agreement, which was expected to be approved by the Northfield City Council Tuesday, means the township cannot seek incorporation until the agreement expires or one of the two entities withdraws from the agreement. A six-month notice must be give before withdrawal. The agreement includes quarterly meetings between the two boards to discuss a possible new an- Castore nexation agreement for joint planning and zoning, which could include a provision that Bridgewater can use the city’s zoning authority in the township. “That’s what we are going to investigate,” Bridgewater Supervisor Glen Castore said Thursday. The city would agree not to initiate litigation against the township during the agreement. Castore said the township has been seeking additional control of zoning and is willing to work with Ness the city to address the issue so it can avoid the cost posed by petitioning for incorporation. “We had some objectives that we were trying to reach,” he said. “Incorporation was one of the means.” The township is grappling with the projected loss of the county landfill within the next 20 to 25 years. Castore said 25 percent of the township’s monthly revenue is generated through the landfill. The county pays a fee to the township as that’s where the landfill is located. “We’re looking to replace revenue we know we’re going to lose. That’s what got this all started,” Castore said. He noted the township uses the funding to buy gravel, and he believes the township would do a worse job of maintaining roads and mitigating flooding if that is lost. “One option for replacing that revenue is to have some agriculturerelated businesses locate in the township,” he said. “In order to do that, we probably need to control the zoning, which is currently controlled by the county.” Castore also sees board action has a preventative step. “The city does not want us to incorporate, plain and simple,” he said. “If we don’t incorporate and have any annexation agreement, we don’t have any protection at all against annexation.” Northfield City Councilor Brad Ness said the agreement is “kind of a starting point in our negotiations.” He supports extending the agreement and expects it to one day take on a longer term. “Hopefully we’ll get an agreement that’s acceptable to both parties,” he said. Ness said although zoning decisions are controlled by the county, the city would likely support zoning measures Bridgewater takes as long as they do not infringe on a Northfield development.

Sex education curriculum in Minnesota could soon be operating under new guidelines if a piece of legislation sponsored by Rep. Todd Lippert, DFL-Northfield, is approved. And that concerns some conservatives. Lippert’s bill, HF 1414, would require sex education to be medically accurate and age-appropriate. In addition, curriculum would be expected to cover a wide variety of topics, including genderbased violence, affirmative consent and contraceptives, and would be required to be inclusive to the LGBTQ+ community. Among the largest groups in support of the new legislation are Planned Parenthood Action Fund and the Minnesota Coalition Against Sexual Assault (MNCASA). Currently, Minnesota lets districts put together their own sex education curriculum and is one of 37 states which currently does not require sex education curriculum to be medically accurate. Lippert’s bill passed in the House last session, but stalled in the Senate. Conservative opponents of the measure reacted with outrage, arguing the measure would pre-empt local and parental control of sex education. The Child Protection League, a socially conservative Mankato-based nonprofit, holds a rally at the state Capitol Sunday in opposition to the measure. Child Protection League Board Chair Julie Quist, of St. Peter, said that ultimately, the decision of what to teach children in sex ed needs to be left up to local school boards and parents. “(Supporters of the bill) say that what’s taught is inconsistent, that some places teach some things that other places teach others,” Quist said. “That’s what local control is.”
