OWATONNA — Things looked a lot different when the North American Farm and Power Show first started in Minnesota. For one thing, the expo was held in the Twin Cities — the most densely populated part of the state, which brought its own set of headaches. Among the headaches, said Brock Nelson, was trying to maneuver traffic tractors, combines and other farm equipment on the big city streets. Another thing was that the people who attended the show — both merchants and attendees — had to pay for parking, said Nelson is the show director for Tradexpos, the Austin, Minnesota-based company that produces the farm and power show every year. “Rural people don’t like to pay to park,” he said. So in 2003, the North American Farm and Power Show moved its operation to the Four Seasons Centre in Owatonna and has remained here ever since. The show is slated this year to run March 14-16. And so successful has the event been and anticipated to be that Tradexpos has already booked the Four Seasons for its 2020 show. How successful is the show? “We’re a sold-out show,” said Nelson. That means that the 310 booths available have been filled by exhibitors, this year by 165 companies, many of them returning because they have enjoyed the large turnout of farmers viewing and buying their products. But that doesn’t mean that the expo will be just the same old things that have
been there in years past. Indeed, just the opposite as over the years the event has showcased new, groundbreaking merchandise each year. When, for example, the expo first came to Owatonna in 2003, the merchandise being shown in and around the Four Seasons Centre was different — not completely so, but different nonetheless — than what was exhibited last year. In 2003, you would have been hard-pressed to find too many farmers in Steele County using computers in the cabs of their tractors. Nowadays, not only are computers commonplace, but so are other technological advances aimed at agriculture — advances such as “unmanned aerial vehicles” or UAVs, aircraft without pi-
lots more commonly known as “drones.” Nelson said that about 10 percent of the things on display this year will be new to the farm and power show, with a large part of that focusing on construction needs around the farm.

He also said that the emphasis on solar energy will be big this year.
“The seminars are here to educate farmers on how to run their farms a little more efficiently,” said Nelson. “They offer tips on how to best run their farms, the best practices.”
Then there’s the success in terms of attendance. The expo, which draws attendees from about a 100-mile radius of Owatonna, drew about 22,000 last year, Nelson said — a figure that he expects to meet, if not surpass, this year.

Seminar will focus on cover crops and will run from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. On Friday morning, Linder Farm Network will sponsor an Extension seminar on nitrogen. That afternoon, the Minnesota Association of County Feedlot Officers a manure management seminar from noon to 4:30 p.m. Attendance at the Friday afternoon seminar will meet the education requirements for the Minnesota Department of Agriculture’s Commercial Waste Technician Licensing Program. The manure management seminar carries a $10 per person registration fee. All other seminars are free. The expo itself is also free — as is the parking.
As in years past, there will also be a grand prize drawing that will take place at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, shortly before the expo closes its doors for another year. In fact, there will be two grand prizes given away this year. One will be a Husqvarna 455 Rancher 18-inch chain saw prize package sponsored by Miner’s Outdoor and Rec in Blooming Prairie. The prize package is valued at $600. The other is a John Deere E110 riding mower, courtesy of Tradexpos and Kibble Equipment. The prize is valued at $2,000. Attendees may register at the information desk in the lobby of the Four Seasons Centre. You must be 18 years of age to enter.
