FARIBAULT WAS Founded by French-Canadian fur TRADER alexander faribault in 1834
Alexander Faribault House
Cathedral of Our Merciful Saviour
Built in 1853 the Alexander Faribault House, was the first wood-frame house in Rice County, Minnesota. It was made by fur trader Alexander Faribault in the Greek Revival style. Call the Rice County Historical Society at 507-332-2121 or visit www.rchistory.com for tour information.
The “cathedral idea” was in the air at the time Henry Benjamin Whipple became Minnesota’s first Episcopal Bishop in 1859. According to Whipple, this was the first Episcopal church in the US to be built as a cathedral. Built 1862–1869, it is the oldest cathedral in Minnesota. The architect was James Renwick, Jr., who also designed St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York and the Smithsonian Institution Building in Washington, D.C. Call 507-334-7732.

The city of Faribault was founded by French-Canadian fur trader Alexander Faribault. He established trading posts at several locations along the Cannon River upon arriving in the area in 1826. By 1835, a permanent post was built in the current city of Faribault, which is the Rice County seat. Faribault is home to one of the first wood-frame houses in the territory, which still stands and is open for tours. A statue of Faribault by local artist Ivan Whillock stands in Heritage Park, along the beautiful bluffs of the Straight River near downtown. Faribault is renowned for its educational facilities, which include the Minnesota State Academy for the Deaf, the Minnesota State Academy for the Blind, and Shattuck-St. Mary’s School, in addition to well-supported public and parochial schools.
Faribault: Home of the Tilt-A-Whirl Invented by Herbert Sellner in 1926, the Tilt-A-Whirl: is one of the best-known flat rides, designed for commercial use at amusement parks, fairs and carnivals, in which it is commonly found. Through the years, Faribault has depended on mills, breweries, agriculture and manufacturing. Manufacturing still exists in the city today, with hightech glass coating company, SAGE Electrochromics; Jennie O/Turkey Store and Faribault Foods, among others. To delve more deeply into the area’s history, the Rice County Historical Museum is a good stop. There you’ll learn about the city’s early days, the stunning Episcopal cathedral, and Minnesota Gopher Heisman Trophy winner, Faribault’s Bruce Smith.
Rice County Historical Society (Open to the Public)
The Rice County Historical Society was founded in 1926 as an outgrowth of the Old Settlers Association, formed in 1874. It’s mission is to “collect, preserve, and interpret the history of Rice County and the State of Minnesota.” The museum contains a collection of objects, images and artifacts, ranging from pre-history to present day. Donahue’s Greenhouse
In 1856 a German immigrant named Gottfried Fleckenstein began using the natural sandstone caves along the Straight River for brewing and storing beer. The largest natural cave (still in use today) was enlarged in 1936, then entirely new caves were hand hewn from the sandstone rock beginning in 1938. Faribault is home to several local craftman style businesses. The bluff caves are home to blue cheese makers. The Faribault Woolen Mill Co. is along the banks of the Cannon river, 10,000 Drops is a craft distillery and newly opened, Corks and Pints, a wine and beer bar. There is one long standing greenhouse in Faribault. Donahue’s Greenhouse is going into their 47th season. The Paradise Center for the Arts is home to artists and musicians in the area and Faribault’s own Ivan Whillock also has his own woodcarving studio.

Founded on the banks of the Cannon River in Faribault, MN, the Faribault Woolen Mill is a living testament to American craftsmanship. Founded in 1865, the year Lincoln died and the Civil War ended, Faribault woolens are renowned for their comfort and quality. From providing woolen blankets for pioneers heading west to comforting our troops through two world wars, our woolens are woven into American history. Ivan Whillock Woodcarving Studio Ivan Whillock did his first wood carvings at the age of twelve in his father’s furniture shop. He received his art degree in 1959 and has studied with sculptor Angel Lillo, and master carver Eduardo Gutierrez. Paradise Center for the Arts (Open to the Public)
Built in 1929 on the site of the former Faribault Opera House, the Paradise was recently renovated. Originally built to seat 915, the Paradise has been altered to seat 300. 10,000 Drops Craft Distillery 10,000 Drops is a new Craft Distillery dedicated to distilling and aging the highest quality Whiskeys and Rums. It was founded with the goal of crafting the highest quality american spirits, in the spirit of the American craftsman. The distillery became a dream for four friends who grew up together in Minnesota. After high school they went their separate directions, gaining skills in small business, retail, hospitality, chemical engineering, sustainable design and accounting. MINNESOTA STATE ACADEMIES FOR THE DEAF & BLIND Minnesota became a state on May 11, 1858. In that year, during the session of the first state legislature, definite action was taken looking toward the establishment of a school for the 507-334-4381 or 800-653-2354
deaf children of Minnesota. The Honorable George E. Skinner, one of Faribault’s representatives in the state legislature, asked that a “deaf and dumb asylum” be located in Faribault. The legislature decided that this institution should be located in Faribault if the citizens of the town would provide 40 acres of land within two miles of
town for a site. The academies are still in operation today and are highly respected centers of education.
SHATTUCK – ST. MARY’S SCHOOL In 1858, The Rev. Dr. James Lloyd
Breck established the Episcopal mission school and seminary from which Shattuck-St. Mary’s School has developed and prospered. In the last decade, SSM has attracted national attention in areas the school refers to as “Centers of Excellence,” namely ice hockey, soccer, figure skating, golf, and the arts.

This traditional process allows the AmaBlu® and gorgonzola, and St. Pete’s Select™ blue cheeses to distinguish themselves with a complex, complicated yet delightfully intimate flavor. Legend holds that the first blue cheese was born in the natural caves of France where ideal humidity and temperature conditions allowed native blue green molds to flourish.
