There are moments in life that leave a lasting mental image; a parks crew planting flowers downtown, teens stacked in hammocks in Island Park or a red-tailed hawk flying overhead. Maybe a family walking through the park in spring, when the snow has started to melt and the city is beginning to wake up again. Yet for many people, these moments pass quickly, without as much as a second thought. For Mike Benson, they often become something more than just a moment worth remembering. A moment worth recreating.
A retired business insurance professional, Mike began painting more regularly during retirement, after 37 years at Warner & Company. His earliest work was rooted in birding, a hobby that taught him to look closely, study details and notice the difference between what is simply seen and what is truly observed. As Mike worked to memorize different bird species, he found that drawing, and later painting, helped anchor their features and names in his mind. Over time, that same attention moved from birds and landscapes into everyday scenes of Fargo life. Today, many of Mike’s pieces capture familiar parks, public spaces and the people who care for and use them.
His process often begins with a walk, a conversation or a moment that catches his eye. Often times he takes a photo and heads home to sketch it out while it’s fresh. Most of his painting happens at his kitchen table in the
days that follow but the finished work still feels immediate. His pieces are personal, textured and full of movement, showing parks not as empty landscapes, but as places shaped by people.
When Mike paints someone, he always keeps the original but ensures his subject always gets a copy. He’s intentional with noting who the people are so each painting becomes part artwork, part record and part thank-you. Some of his work has captured Fargo Parks staff and contractors at work, including crews planting flowers, construction of the Island Park Pool and caring for various park spaces.
For Mike, those scenes matter because they show the effort behind the places people enjoy every day. He knows what it means to start at the bottom, to work hard and to be part of a team. That perspective comes through in the way he talks about the people who maintain, build and care for public spaces.
“It takes a team to make it work,” Mike says.
That belief is part of what draws him to parks. They are public, shared and shaped by many hands. They are places where people walk, gather, work, rest, play and remember. For Mike, parks are not just places to paint but places to observe with intention. They are places where memory, community, belonging and possibility overlap.

“
I’m kind of a painter, and I’m trying to get better,” Mike says. “The only way I can get better is to paint more.

“

As the director of Courts Plus Community Fitness, Kelly Kisell’s days start early and move quickly. From training longtime clients before sunrise to supporting staff, checking in with members, managing facility needs and heading straight into his kids’ hockey schedules after work, his role is built around routine, relationships and a steady commitment to helping people feel welcome.
Most mornings, Kelly is up by 4:30 a.m. He lives in Horace, about 20 minutes from Courts Plus which gives him just enough time to listen tohis favorite sports radio shows on the way in. Before leaving the house, he starts his day with coffee, getting ready and preparing breakfast for his three dogs before his wife and three boys begin their morning. By 5:45 a.m., he is at Courts Plus starting his personal training sessions for the day.
“I’ve had these clients for up to 15 years, so I guess I would consider them more friends than clients,” Kelly says.

After training, his day as director usually begins around 7:00 a.m. His first stops are familiar ones: saying good morning to Angelique at the front desk, dropping his bag in his office, and heading to the weight room. Some days include multiple meetings at the Fargo Parks Sports Center while other days are filled with member conversations, phone calls, and facility walkthroughs.
“There are days when members stop in to talk about issues, praising our staff or just wanting to talk about current events,” Kelly says. “Some days the phone rings all morning long and people are walking in with questions, so I’m helping the front desk.”
Operating Courts Plus means balancing a busy facility with members, staff, programs, courts, fitness spaces and building needs all happening at once. With the only indoor tennis courts in town, Courts Plus also plays an important role for the local tennis community, especially during tournaments and the colder months.
“We put a lot of trust into our staff,” Kelly says. “We all have different duties, but we all work together. We help each other out if there is a space issue or a staffing issue.”
The behind-the-scenes work can also be deeply personal. Staff members get to know members well, and sometimes that means helping through difficult moments, from medical emergencies to the loss of familiar faces.
For Kelly, walking through Courts Plus when the facility is busy is one of the best parts of the day. A quick conversation might turn into a note about a machine that needs attention, empty coffee, missing paper towels or something else that needs to be addressed. As fall and winter bring more people indoors, the pace of
the facility shifts. The early morning members remain steady, while tennis and pickleball players return inside more often as the weather changes. Still, Kelly says the goal remains the same: creating a place where members feel part of something larger.
“Our members all have different goals and passions, but the one thing we strive for is that they can all feel like one big family,” he says. “I also hope they can feel trust and know that our staff is committed to helping in their health and wellness journey.”
“
It’s not what I do, but what our team does,” he says. “We ensure our members have a safe, engaging and effective environment to achieve their health and wellness goals.
“
Kelly is quick to point out that the experience members have at Courts Plus is created by the entire team. He says the team feels like a family, with many full-time and part-time staff members staying for years. They spend long days together, support one another and try to keep the atmosphere light.
“We laugh a lot, we smile a lot and hopefully bring a smile to our members,” Kelly says. “This is why we chose to work in this industry. It should be fun.”
Kelly usually tries to fit in his own workout after work, though meetings or unexpected needs sometimes get in the way. A good day, he says, is one where he can clear a few to-do sticky notes from his desk. Evenings move quickly as Kelly’s hobbies, he jokes, are his kids’ hobbies. After work, he is often running out the door to pick up one of his sons and get him to hockey practice. Having coached all three of his boys, Kelly says evenings can be full, with some nights not ending until after 10:00 p.m.

Winter changes the parks we know best as the trails get quieter, ice rinks come to life and sledding hills fill with families, mittened hands and the sound of snow pants sliding over packed snow. The same places Fargo residents visit in spring, summer and fall take on a different kind of purpose when the temperature drops.
Getting outside in winter does not have to mean planning a full adventure. It can be one lap around a snowy trail, an hour at the rink, a few trips down the sledding hill or a warm indoor walk when outdoor plans are not realistic. From classic winter traditions to simple ways to stay active, here are a few Fargo Parks favorites to add to your list this season!

For a classic Fargo winter afternoon, visit Mickelson Sledding Hill. The hill is open seasonally, weather permitting, and sled rentals are available at no cost with a driver’s license. Bring the family, bundle up and make the most of a fresh snowfall.

Celebrate hockey the old-fashioned way at Lindenwood Park during Fargo Parks’ signature Pond Hockey Classic. Youth and adult players can get a team together for the Fargo Pond Hockey Classic, while spectators can swing by to watch the fun from the sidelines. With multiple outdoor rinks, a warming tent and plenty of winter energy, pond hockey is one of Fargo Parks’ best ways to enjoy the season.
Head downtown for a winter skate at the SCHEELS Skating Rink at Broadway Square. Located in the heart of Downtown Fargo, the outdoor rink offers a festive place to enjoy the season, meet up with friends or make a quick stop after dinner or shopping. Need skates or a place to warm up? Stop by the Skate Shack for skate rentals, snacks and a break from the cold.

When little ones need to burn energy but the weather is not cooperating, the indoor playground at Courts Plus offers a warm place to climb, play and stay active. It is a great option for families looking for an indoor winter activity, especially on days when outdoor play is limited by snow, wind or cold temperatures.

Edgewood Golf Course becomes a winter recreation destination once the snow arrives. Visitors can enjoy snowshoeing through the winter landscape, with rentals available during posted Cross Country Ski Rental hours. Snowshoeing is a great option for beginners, families or anyone looking for a slower-paced way to enjoy the outdoors.

Some winter days are simply too frigid to be outside. When the temperature drops, head indoors and walk a lap on the Fargo Parks Sports Center track. The indoor track offers a warm, accessible way to stay active during the winter months, whether you are fitting in a quick walk, building a running routine or taking a break from the cold.

Experience Lindenwood Park in a new way by exploring its cross country ski trails. Known for its riverfront setting, mature trees and year-round recreation, Lindenwood becomes a peaceful winter destination when snow covers the trails. Cross country ski trails are available free of charge, with grooming completed as weather and conditions allow.

Make time for one of Fargo’s favorite holiday traditions with a visit to Santa Village at Rheault Farm. Families can enjoy festive activities, holiday displays, visits with Santa and Mrs. Claus, reindeer, model train displays, cookie decorating, concessions and more. Sensory-Friendly Night is also available for individuals and families who benefit from a calmer holiday experience, with softened lights, gentle music, sensory kits, quiet space and special time with Santa and Mrs. Claus.

Children progress through a series of seven levels designed to teach the fundamentals of swimming and encourage aquatic exploration with guided instruction. In doing so, the Fargo Park District works to ensure a high level of competency is acquired by participants in both aquatic safety and swimming skills.
Pre-Level (Ages 4-5): Participants learn how to be safe around water and begin working on floating, arm and leg movements, and confidence in the water where they can touch.
Level 1: Students continue building confidence by learning the basic swimming kicks and arm strokes (whip and flutter kicks and the front and back crawl) with support from floatation devices and the instructor.
Level 2: Students focus on practicing the skill sets learned in level one and build the confidence to complete the skills without support from the instructor and/or floatation devices.
Level 3: Students begin working on their swimming endurance along with more intermediate swimming skills such as the breaststroke and diving.
Level 4: Students continue developing their swimming endurance and begin working on more advanced swimming strokes, such as the side stroke and butterfly. Basic lifesaving practices, such as a reach-throw technique, are introduced that focus specifically on staying safe around pools, lakes and rivers.
Level 5: Students continue developing basic, intermediate, and advanced swimming strokes, focusing on endurance, refinement, and mastery. Surface dives and diving from starting blocks are also introduced.
Level 6/Pre-lifeguarding: Students continue to develop their swimming endurance and begin learning intermediate life-saving skills. Pre-lifeguarding skills are taught in order to prepare students to be good babysitters/nannies and/or future lifeguards. This level is a benefit to any student who spends time around water during the summer months and ensures students are prepared to pass the water skills requirements for lifeguarding certifications.

Stay Active and Independent for Life (SAIL) is an evidence-based strength, balance and fitness program for adults 55 and older. Performing exercises that improve strength, balance and fitness are the single most important activity that adults can do to stay active and reduce their chances of falling.
Thank you to our program sponsor:

Strength, Balance, and Stretch combines bands and body weight as resistance to improve muscular strength. The instructor will go through a series of balance and fall prevention movements to improve mobility. This class ends with a variety of stretches for large muscle groups to improve flexibility and stability. This class is perfect for all fitness levels.
Enjoy coffee and a treat while learning about safety, health, wellness, and more from local community experts in a social environment.
