Let’s Take A
FIELD TRIP
Since we’re all staying close to home these days, let’s take a virtual field trip and visit some exciting projects in our communities!
Today we’re going to “visit”
St. Johnsbury In St. Johnsbury, we provided engineering and construction services to replace a three-span, 129-foot-long steel stringer bridge. The replacement bridge consists of a 48-foot span by 27-foot rise deep corrugated structural steel plate arch.
Check out the drone flyover video of the project: https://www.vimeo.com/412741866/990acef9c4
Planning for a future railroad, the arch on this bridge had to be pretty big (a clearance of 23 feet tall by 18 feet wide).
The bridge was part of the Accelerated Bridge Program, and was closed for 50 days during construction while traffic was detoured.
Vtrans used Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) technology on many of the bridges replaced as part of this Program. ABC is a process in which as little construction as possible is done on a bridge site, reducing the impact to the traveling public. If you would like to learn more about ABC, check out our blog here: https://www.fando.com/blog/accelerated-bridge-construction
Bradford-Ryegate In Bradford-Ryegate, we helped resurfacing 16 miles of US Route 5 through the villages of Bradford, Newbury, and Wells River.
Our resurfacing design also included a bicycle lane, removal of stairs in two locations to create ADA-compliant sidewalk ramps, rumble strips, guardrail, minor drainage improvements, design of a headwall extension for an existing box culvert, signing, and the upgrade of the railroad crossing the Newbury State Highway.
Royalton In Royalton, we are helping to rehabilitate two six-span, 917-foot long steel stringer interstate bridges. An in-depth bridge inspection utilizing drones was conducted to determine the extent and locations of the required repairs, which determined the need for a deck replacement. The anticipated repairs include diaphragm, lateral bracing, expansion joint, and splice repairs, as well as abutment and pier concrete repairs. To help keep disruption to the public as minimal as possible, we studied traffic alternatives to determine the most appropriate traffic control measures.
Brandon In Brandon, we provided the conceptual, preliminary, and final design of the onemile-long, complex urban Municipal Assistance Bureau project.
This project included the complete roadway design including streetscape, landscape design, development of traffic control plans, design of a comprehensive closed drainage system, replacement of sewer and water systems, utility relocations, permitting, and the development of contract plans and specifications.
We worked with the Town and local community groups to incorporate input gathered during site visits and meetings so that the design best met the community’s needs.
We hope you had fun on our Virtual Field Trip to
Vermont!
