Let’s Take A
FIELD TRIP
It’s getting warm out! But since most of us still can’t go to the beach, let’s take a virtual field trip and visit some beachy areas at which we’ve worked!
Hammonasset Beach State Park Hammonasset Beach State Park is home to Connecticut’s largest swimming beach and campground. This beautiful beach in Madison, CT had been suffering erosion of its shores. We looked at options that would protect the beach, including coastal structures and soft solutions (dune reconstruction and beach nourishment).
As part of our work, w resources, including embankments,
we conducted an inventory of the existing coastal beaches, dunes, rocky shores, tidal wetlands, and as well as freshwater wetlands and streams.
Easton Pond and Beach
At Easton Pond and Beach in Newport, RI, we helped with flooding, dam safety, and beach water quality concerns.
We created models to
helped them rebuild t
o assess flooding and offer solutions and we
their dam to protect their drinking water reservoir.
Silver Sands Beach At Silver Sands Beach in Milford, CT, an outlet structure to improve flood control was causing beach erosion. So we extended the existing concrete box culvert outlet structure and refurbished the tide gate structure, which prevents flooding of inland areas.
We also designed replacement retain
ning walls that were damaged in coastal storms.
Goshen Cove Outlet At Goshen Cove Outlet in Waterford, CT, we were proud to be part of a coastal inlet, barrier beach, and tidal lagoon restoration and stabilization project. We performed bathymetric surveys, sediment sampling, and sediment analysis for quality and gradation.
We performed coastal process analy
and inlet channel configurations to d
tidal inlet and to provide more unifor
yses and hydrodynamic modeling of beach, dune,
define the alternatives available to stabilize the
rm tidal inundation cycles in the marsh.
We hope you had fun on our Virtual Field Trip to
The Beach!
