THUNDER WINS LEAGUE TITLE

The Florida Baseball League, an elite amateur baseball league in the Tampa Bay area that consists of ten teams, wrapped up it’s season in October with plenty of game
After a highly competitive regular season, the teams went into the playoff portion of the season. It is here where a regular season full of success and accolades can all come to a sudden end with a miss played ground ball or a pitch thrown in the wrong guy’s wheelhouse. It is now win or go home time. Team USA ended the regular season atop the National League with a league best .800 winning percentage. They finished with a slim half game lead over the second place Tampa Thunder. Team USA was led by their hard hitting outfielder Alejandro Morell. Morell was the team’s leading hitter batting .413, good for sixth in the league. He had 17 ribbies and 26
runs scored, all top numbers for the team. Diosdany Castillo was the team’s workhorse on the hill, logging a team high 38.2 innings pitched. The Thunder’s Vinny Lally led the team, and the National League, in batting with a .525 average. That’s an astonishing 69 points higher than

the second best average of .456 by catcher and teammate Vic Pagan. The Thunder’s Jason McQuiniff was third with a .440 average, giving credence to the team’s name. Southpaw Roger Lincoln was the team’s ace on the bump, tossing 42 innings with a miniscule 1.07
ERA and whiffing 59 batters while allowing a stingy 7 free passes. On the American League side, the Tampa Bay Expos were the regular season American League champs with a .684 winning percentage, a game and a half ahead of the runner up Tampa Rays. The Expos’s Bobby Eveld led the team and the American League with a .586 average. The 6’ 5” 220 pound power hitter was on the DL for almost four months in the middle of the season but still managed to knock in nine runs in only 29 at bats. Bryan Zemina had four wins and a save for the Expos while logging 37.2 innings and fanning 35 batters, all team highs. For the Rays, Rigoberto Arrebato was the team’s leading hitter, batting .513. Teammate Rainer Rodriguez hit .306 and provided the power as he went deep five times to lead the team. Renne De Los Rios and Jose Roque were the Rays’ 1-2 punch on the mound. De Los Rios led the American League with a 0.57 ERA with Roque just a hair behind at 0.73.

MilPro Publications Eight teams headed into the quarter final round on October 11th. Team USA edged out the Tampa Padres 6-5 and the Tampa Thunder held the Tampa Cardinals to a mere five hits in a 10-zip route. The Tampa Rays beat the Dade City Brewers 9-5 and the Tampa Bay Expos pounded out a 10-0 victory over the Tampa Tides.

And then there were four. On October 18th the remaining four teams, Rays, USA, Expos and Thunder, would battle it out for a spot in the championship game. First up would be the Tampa Rays and Team USA. In a true pitcher’s dual, Team USA blinked first as the Rays’ hurlers combined for a shut out in a 1-0 victory. In the other semi final game, the Thunder removed much of the suspense by scoring early and often in a 7-2 win over the Expos. The finals are now set. On October 25th at Jack Russell Stadium in Clearwater, the Tampa Thunder and the Tampa Rays laced up their cleats for one last time for all the marbles. The Thunder handed the ball and their hopes to their big southpaw, Roger Lincoln. The Rays counted on Jose Rosario, who had 34 strikeouts in 24 innings during the regular season. The Thunder struck for a run in the bottom of the first after lead off man Vinny Lally rapped a base hit and was driven home by Jeff Bloomer. Meanwhile, Lincoln was on cruise control, tossing three shut out innings to start the game.

Down 1-0, the Rays finally found a chink in Lincoln’s’ armor the second time through the line up. With the help of an error, the Rays scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the fourth to take a 2-1 lead. The

Thunder quickly struck back for two of their own on the bottom half of the inning to retake the lead 3-2. The two teams traded a run in the next two innings and the seventh inning saw both managers make a call to the bull pen for some help. Thunder manager Pier Ballesteros called for right hander Nolan Houmes to pitch the top of the seventh. Houmes carried a heavy load for the Thunder this season, logging 43.1 innings, fanning 54 and having a 1.45 ERA. Houmes sent the Rays down in order, holding on to their precarious one run lead. In the bottom of the seventh, Jose Roque came on in relief of Rosario and was quickly tagged for a run, extending the Thunder’s lead to 5-3. Another perfect inning by Houmes sent the game into the bottom of the eighth where the Thunder unleashed the thunder in their bats (I have been waiting all story to say that) exploding for three runs off Rosario and breaking the game wide open with a five run lead.

For the first time in recent memory, all four Varsity Divisions have an undefeated team sitting atop it. The St. Pete ‘Lil Devils have 11-0 teams in both the Varsity Flyweights and Varsity Midgets. In the Varsity Mighty Mites it’s the Pinellas Park Thunderbirds at 11-0 and the Lakewood Spartans sit undefeated in the Varsity Pee Wee division.
In the Mighty Mites it’s St. Pete playing the role of possible spoiler. They are 10-1, have a first round bye with their only loss coming way back in week one and by just six points to the Thunderbirds. They too are in a position to get revenge in the championship game.
With these four undefeated Goliath’s there needs to be a David.
The Cougars have just one loss in the Varsity Pee Wee division, falling to
Lakewood 13-0 in week five. They also played the Azalea Bulldogs to a scoreless tie in week one. If the Bulldogs beat the Clearwater Tornadoes in the quarterfinals, Countryside will get a chance to make that tie right and then avenge their loss in the finals. The third and final runner up position for the Cougars is the Midget division. In the SYFC, one statement is true, “The big boys only come out at night!” As a long Saturday winds down, in the twilight as the field lights begin to cast a glow, it’s Varsity Midget time. Even though they’re called “midgets,” the term doesn’t quite describe the 13 and 14 year old players who can weigh as much as 170 pounds! St. Pete handed the Cougars their only Midget loss 14-8 in week six and a rematch in the championship game is looming. Stay tuned to see if, and how many, Davids defeat Goliath.

AROUND TOWN ON THE ICE... In the Lightning
High School Hockey League, Beau Armstrong of Seminole High School leads the league in scoring with 38 total points (23 goals and 15 assists). Seminole is 6-3-0 and in second place in the Bradley Division of the Western Conference. Goalie James Belczyk of East Lake High School is second in the league in save percentage at .926. East Lake teammate Justin Gar is third in the league with two game winning goals and has 19 total points. East Lake is 3-3-1 and in fourth place in the Cullimore Division of the Western Conference.
IN THE FIELD... Carter Coley was the top seller in the Tarpon Springs Little League Spring League Fundraiser and won a 2016 Easton Mako Bat from the League.

The Countryside Junior Cougars Midget Cheerleading Squad won the 2015 Mid-Florida Throwdown Cheer Competition on October 18th at the Florida State Fairgrounds.
CHARGER GIRLS MOVIN’ ON UP...
The Clearwater Chargers U13 Girls played in the AC/DC Classic October 10th and 11th. They won all of their games and went to the final. Game 1, 3-0, game 2, 1-0 and game 3, 4-0. Even though they lost in the final 1-0, after their last two tournaments, they moved from #51 to #17 in the state rankings.

ADULT REC ROUND-UP ON THE HARDWOOD...
The Monday Night Men’s Basketball season at the Safety Harbor Rec Center crowned a champion. Gulf Coast Retina finished the regular season with a 6-1 record (their only loss was in the second week of the season to the MONSTARS 64-60). Retina destroyed the Blue Devils 53-34 in the semi finals, setting up their pay back game against the MONSTARS in the finals. In a tough back and forth game with many lead changes, Gulf Coast knocked down the last shot with the clock ticking down en route to a nail bitting 61-60 victory. Todd Wahlberg, Mike Hudson, Alonzo Saunders and Eric McCrae proved to be just enough to send the MONSTARS and the league’s most prolific offense, led by league scoring leader David Pisarcik, to a heart breaking loss.
The Fall II season has just begun and Pisarcik is back at it, leading the league with 31 points a game after three weeks of play. In the Thursday Night Men’s Basketball League in St. Petersburg, the summer champs, Hand Down, Man Down, made it back to back titles as they went 9-1. (Their only loss was to Mr. Glass, October 15th.) in the regular season to earn the one seed and a first round bye. In the play offs, they knocked off the Brick Stars 95-64. In the semi final, they edged out the Knicks 63-55 to earn a spot in the championship game. Hand Down, Man Down faced off against Pops with the title on the line. In a competitive game, Pops came up a little short as Hand Down, Man Down, led by brothers Joseph and Edgar Bergollo, held off a late rally for a 61-57 victory and back to back titles. Scull also had the league’s highest scoring night, draining 39 points in week two. Thursday Night Coed Kickball season at the Eddie C. Moore Softball Complex in Clearwater is beginning the first round of play offs. The Pro Marine/Hooters team went undefeated at 7-0 during the regular season and earned the only first round bye of the play offs. The Mustangs are 6-1 with their only loss coming at the hands of Pro Marine/Hooters the first game of the season. The Mustangs take on the seventh seed Half Kick of Dynamite in round one. All My Pitchers Love Me takes on Cosmo Carpet with the winner taking on Pro Marine/Hooters. The path is set for the Mustangs, if they win out, to end up playing for revenge against Pro Marine/Hooters in the finals. Stay tuned!

He and teammates Greg LaBanca, Donny Loewer and Carl Goodwin just manage to find a way to win matches. Scott Grages of Livin’ on a Spare has dominated the men’s scoring lead all season long, averaging a sizzling 231, 32 points higher than second place Tim Mogelgaard of The Wesley Crushers. Larnel Sultan and Brandon Giles of Splits Happen are tied for third, averaging 186. On the women’s side, Ashley Succow and Jessica Succow are one-two in scoring average with a 144 and 141 average respectively. Carolyn Dewhurst of the Kingpins is third.
BACK AT THE YARD...
The Monday Night Co-Ed Softball season at the Eddie C Moore Softball Complex wrapped up the season with the two favorites ending up in the championship game. Stranger Danger and Gimme Some Glovin,’ were neck and neck for the top seed in the intermediate division early in the season. Both teams were 4-1 before Stranger Danger lost three of the next four games. Gimme Some Glovin’ went undefeated over that same span to finish the regular season at 8-1 and the top seed. Stranger Danger ended up 5-4, but still tied for second place. Stranger Danger knocked off My Girlfriends 12-2 and Gimme Some

GOLF TIP
OF THE MONTH Although it’s tempting to hit chips indoors, all it takes is one broken lamp to realize that golf is an outdoor activity. Nevertheless, you can improve your chipping technique within the friendly confines of your own living room with the help of a wooden dowel or broken golf shaft. Take the dowel and place it through the hole on the top of the grip on a pitching wedge. Push the dowel roughly 8 to 12 inches down the butt end of the shaft (a little Vaseline may help the dowel slide easier through the club shaft). Two to three feet of the dowel should extend outward from the top of the grip. Now, practice your chipping motion, making sure that your left wrist remains rigid as the club face passes through the impact zone. If your left wrist breaks down (a flaw that can cause a lot of short-game misery), you’ll feel the protruding portion of the dowel hit against your left side. In addition to guarding against wrist breakdown, the dowel will also help you to establish the proper hands-forward position at address - a crucial factor for clean contact. The dowel also will force you to keep your hands moving forward and swing the club down the target line in the follow through. Once you master this drill, you’ll be able to get up and down with the best of them.
