THE WEEKEND WARRIOR ON EXCERISE AND LOSING WEIGHT I gotta drop some weight before the big fourth of July Beach Bash. No problem, I will don my favorite running shoes and hit the road for a couple of miles a day. After all, I have four weeks and just a mere fifteen pounds to shed. After three days of a gruelling three mile run each day I have lost a total of a half a pound. At this rate I will make my goal weight by the fourth of July in 2017, if I’m lucky!

how much you eat. A good start to a healthy diet is to eliminate sugar and start eating food that promotes healthy gut flora. Gut flora? Is that some sort of stomach disease from eating too much pizza? No, gut flora is the little microorganism that helps breakdown and process those three slices of sausage pizza I had for lunch. Speaking of pizza, refined simple carbohydrates like white bread and processed foods like

So what’s wrong? Well, the experts tell me that I am what I eat. What the hell does that mean? What it means is you can run all day long, but if you’re putting the wrong stuff into your body you will end up with sore feet and not lose any weight. There are many benefits to exercise and trainers will be the first to point them out. But, for weight loss, exercise will only get you to 20% of your goal. So where does the other 80% come from? You guessed it, your diet! Getting back to my sore feet, Runner’s World Magazine claims that you burn about 100 calories a mile on average. With that said, you would have to run 35 miles a week to lose a single pound. To make matters worse, my three miles a day barely covered the 300 or so calories in that slice of pizza I had after my run. OK, so it was three slices, but you get my point. So what about my diet? First of all, what you eat matters as much as

a little time to prepare your meals and add cultured foods to your diet. Cultured food is not something that you eat at the opera, it essentially means fermented (the chemical process of breaking a complicated substance down into simpler parts, usually with the help of bacteria, yeasts, or fungi). The most common of the fermented foods is yogurt. Sa ue r kr a ut, a nother n a me f o r fermented cabbage, is an example of a cultured vegetable. Adding these to each meal will help get that gut microbial machine cranking. Another trick is to try soaking grains like brown rice for 12 hours before eating. This will initiate sprouting. When sprouting begins, the seed will use it’s own sugar to grow and leave the grain you are eating with less sugar, kinda like Diet Coke... well, not really but you catch my drift.

Stay away from processed foods, most are loaded with large amounts of hidden sodium, fats, and sugar, which are always bad news. So take

grabbed their paddle boards and took to the water on May 18th for the 4th Annual Florida Cup held in Madeira Beach. The paddle event was presented by John’s Pass Village. There were four races; the Nine Mile Elite, the Three Mile Recreational, a 1/4 mile Kids Race and a One Mile Fun Paddle. Gretchen Hines finished with the fastest time in the three mile event with a time of 25:10. The fastest time for a guy was Peyton Thomas with a time of 25:44. Flavio Costa’s 1:12:32 was the top time in the Nine Mile Elite race.

On the last Saturday of each month, Largo Golf Course conducts an 18 Hole Scramble Golf Tournament that consists of four person teams which are created by a blind draw. The scramble, which has a 7:30 a.m. shot gun start, is open to the public who are not golf professionals. The entry fee for the scramble is $20.00 per person and entry fees are awarded as prizes for the winning teams. On the day of each scramble, all participants pay their green fee and electric cart fee, if they choose to ride. Sign up the Wednesday before the scramble and receive $5 OFF your green fee. In the Tuesday Co-ed Softball League, Pitches Be Crazy has dominated the field, going undefeated through the regular season and earning a 16-9 victory over Batmobile in the quarterfinals. Batmobile shut out Insight 7-0 zip in round one. The number two seed, Roster Check and their 6-2 record, were upset in the quarter finals by Up Easy 13-11. Up Easy was a dismal 2-5-1 during the regular season and lost the finale 8-0 to Roster Check, but were hitting on all cylinders for the play off game. The Amish Outlaws beat Down the Line 17-11, to set up the semi finals against Pitches Be Crazy. Round Three pounded Going Deep, 18-3 and will play Up Easy in the other semi final. The spring season of the Monday Night Men’s Basketball League at the Safety Harbor Rec Center finished the season on a rather auspicious note as both teams in the championship game forfeited. The MONSTARS finished the regular season undefeated with David Pisarcik leading the league in scoring, averaging over 38 points per game. That is nearly 15 points higher the second place scorer. They scored a record 141 points in a first round victory over the Flushing Two’s. They then knocked off the defending champion, Gulf Coast Retina, 61-46 in the semi’s despite Blake Farver’s 21 points.
