Largo Wins Lou Caprara Tournament Every May kids start thinking
summer is coming, going on vacation, going to the beach, sleeping in late and playing with their friends all day. But in May, they’re still in school and for Little Leaguers, May means Top Team Tournament time! The Lou Caprara Championship Tournament (re-named five years ago to honor the late Lou Caprara, who devoted so much of his life to the kids of District 12 and beyond.) is sometimes overlooked. It’s big brother, the All-Star Tournament, gets all the accolades, and all the TV coverage. It’s lineups are not jam packed with all-star players at every position. There is no “Road to Williamsport,” and for many of these kids, this is their only moment in the spotlight. While AAU coaches salivate over names on all-star rosters, they pay little mind to the bottom of the line-ups at the TOC. Most of these kids will not be recruited by an AAU team or end up on their high school team. These kids play for the one and only, and most important reason... The Love of the Game! This tournament is all about the team; it’s all about making the most of what you have. It’s about coaches developing their players over the course of the season; and it’s about the pure excitement of that one crack of the bat that can live with someone

This season saw the Largo Orioles and the Dunedin Tigers square off for the coveted title of District 12 TOC Champion.
Meanwhile, the Orioles started off the tournament with a bang as they pounded out 13 runs in knocking off Clearwater 13-1. Largo continued their offensive onslaught as they shut out the Rays 10-zip before running into the Tigers and suffering their first loss. With a 2-1 record Largo would earn the third seed and a match up with the big bats of Safety Harbor in the quarter finals. Safety Harbor had amassed 26 runs over three pool games going 2-1. Dunedin took on Palm Harbor for a second time in less than a week, but the second look at the Tigers did little to help the Rays as Dunedin eliminated Palm Harbor to remain undefeated and advance to the semi finals. Largo managed to silence the Safety Harbor bats to get back on the winning track and move on to the semi finals against East Lake.

The Tigers opened the tournament with a 5-1 victory over the Palm Harbor Rays. Up next, Dunedin outlasted the Countryside Diamond Backs 5-3 and wrapped up pool play beating the Largo Orioles in a nail biter, 3-2 earning the overall one seed as the only undefeated team in

Joey Shane drilled a 3-1 heater to left, putting runners at the corners. Matthew Myrick went the other way for an RBI single but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double. AJ Shelton beat out a dribbler, but the Oriole defense held Shane at third. Tess dug in and fanned Aiden McDonald to get out of the inning. Largo rallied to knot the game at one a piece in the bottom of the first as Ayden Tess helped his own cause with a one out two bagger. Tess swiped third and came around to score on a passed ball. In the top of the second, the Dunedin
bats came alive. Tommy Buettner singled to right and Finn Sullivan followed with a base hit just past second. Austin Lederhouse legged out an infield single to load ‘em up. Mickey Shane worked the count full before drilling one up the middle for an RBI single. With the bases still jammed, Bryce Talley dug in at the plate. Talley looked at ball one before crushing Tess’ next offering for a grand slam homer and a 6-1 lead. Largo came roaring back in the bottom half of the inning. Chase Long started things off by working the count for a free pass. Up next, Mikey Kladovasilakis reached on an error, putting two men aboard.
With two on and no outs, Jordan Lopez strolled to the plate. Lopez fell behind 0-2 and then exploded on the next pitch, sending it out of the park and into the stratosphere for a three run round tripper and narrowing the gap to 6-4. Ayden Tess got back on track in the top of the third. He enticed Finn Sullivan to tap back to the mound for the first out., Ryan Crizado worked the count full before Tess blew a heater by him for strike three. Chase Long came on in relief in the fourth and yielded a base hit to the lead off hitter, Joey Shane. Page 15 three and out for an uneventful inning. Chase Long took to the hill for the O’s in the top of the fifth and very quickly it became clear that he was in the zone. He fanned Joey Harper on four pitches for the first out and froze out Austin Lederhouse on a 3-2 off speed pitch for out number two. Mickey Shane rifled one into left for a base hit but was thrown out at second, trying to take the extra base to end the inning. Largo crept a bit closer in the bottom of the fifth. Rickie Eicher showed patience at the plate and walked to lead off the inning. After Tanner Mangello went down swinging, Long ripped
one inside the bag at third for a single, but Eicher was thrown out at third for the second out. Long ended up on second and scored on Jordan Lopez’s base hit to cut the Tigers’ lead to 6-5. Clinging to a one run lead, Dunedin came to bat in the top of the sixth trying to extend that lead. Chase Long would have no part of that as he was on cruise control, sending the Tigers down in order, giving his team at chance in the bottom of the sixth. Isaiah Berrian led off the inning, fell behind 1-2 and then drilled a base hit to right. Next up, Ayden
The Dunedin Tigers showed great sportsmanship accepting their second place trophies. They were two outs away from a perfect season, dropping a heartbreaker in the bottom of the sixth in the championship game.

Rickie Eicher stepped into the batter’s box, tapped the barrel of his bat on his cleats and dug in at the plate. He watched as a fastball dusted the glove of the Tigers’ catcher for strike one. Eicher stepped out, adjusted his gloves, looked down at the third base coach for a sign and settled back in at the plate. The next pitch came in up in his wheelhouse. Eicher turned on it, sending it soaring towards left center. Going, going, gone! Eicher’s two run walk off home run had ended the game in a moment. He rounded the bases to the cheers of fans and teammates who mobbed him at the plate as the Orioles won the District 12 title 7-6 in dramatic fashion. In other TOC news, Clearwater and
MilPro Publications Dunedin dominated the competition in the Junior Division and were the two teams left standing when the smoke cleared. Both teams cut through pool play like a hot knife through butter, destroying all comers. Clearwater won the first three games of the tournament before an opponent scored a run against them and allowed just six runs through five games of pool play. Dunedin was even better, yielding just four runs through four pool games. Clearwater opened the tournament with a 7-0 victory over Oldsmar. Next up, Clearwater pounded Holiday 11-zip and made it three shutouts in a row by trouncing Countryside 14-0. West Pasco finally touched Clearwater’s pitching for six runs but it would prove to be not nearly enough as the
Clearwater bats erupted for 14 runs en route to the victory. Clearwater had it toughest test next as they squared off with Palm Harbor. In a highly contested game they held on for a 4-1 win, earning them the Pool B top spot. In a rare pitcher’s duel for Clearwater against East Lake, they had all they could handle, but in the end, Clearwater eked out enough offense to win 2-1 in extra innings for a spot in the championship game. Dunedin shutout Safety Harbor 10-0 and then knocked off Largo 13-1. East Lake became their next victim at 13-2 and they wrapped things up with a 7-1 win over West Pasco. In the semi finals, Dunedin lit up the scoreboard in a 23-6 slaughter of Palm Harbor. Clearwater outlasted Dunedin to earn the District 12 title.

Safety Harbor Named a Runner Friendly Community
Did You Know? In 1960 (that was 55 years ago!), the Largo Parks and Recreation Department was formed? That was five years before the birth of the National Recreation and Park Association!
Running is one of the most popular and affordable forms of exercise to get and keep people fit and healthy. Running with a group can also be a positive social experience and can generate significant economic impact dollars for communities that host events and support the running community. Pedestrian networks that include sidewalks, trails, paths, and share lanes often increase property values and overall quality of living in a community. While runners do not require a lot of expensive equipment, there are several ways that local communities can invest to ensure that running is safe, affordable, accessible, and enjoyable for anyone that wants to run. Many communities support a variety of sports and sporting facilities and at the heart of almost every sport is running. Being a Runner Friendly Community not only supports the running community, but running is the foundation for many other community-based sports (soccer, football, tennis, basketball, etc.). The goal of this program is to shine a national spotlight on communities that standout as runner friendly and to provide incentive and ideas for communities to work towards becoming runner friendly communities. Runner friendly communities can increase the quality of life, can improve physical activity for residents as outlined in the National Physical Activity Plan, and can provide for increased economic impact for the community.

National Parks and Rec Month
Spotlight on Palm Harbor Parks and Recreation It was the summer of 1965, 50 years ago. Lyndon B. Johnson was president of the United States and people where lined up outside air conditioned movie theaters to see Goldfinger and Mary Poppins. Twenty six hundred bucks could get you a brand new car and you could fill it with gas at a whopping 31 cents per gallon.
Mickey Mantle was playing centerfield for t h e Y a n k e e s and the Beatles played a sold out concert at Shea Stadium. Also that summer was a significant birth (aside from the birth of JK Rowling). That year, on August 14th, was the birth of the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). It was formed when five related organizations joined together. The five merging organizations were all involved in the support of park and recreation service providers in the public sector and included the National Recreation Association (NRA), American Institute of Park Executives (AIPE), American Recreation Society (ARS) the National Conference on State Parks (NCSP), and the American Association of Zoological Parks and Aquariums (an affiliate of AIPE).
This year the NRPA will celebrate it’s 50th anniversary, fifty years of
dedication to advancing park, recreation and conservation efforts that enhance quality of life for all people! During the year, they will be celebrating and honoring the enduring power of parks and recreation on conservation, health and wellness, and social equity.
Prior to 1985, Park and Recreation Month was celebrated in June, but to better accommodate differing school schedules and climates, the celebration was moved to July. That year, NRPA worked with then-Vice President George H.W. Bush and Walter Payton, Hall of Fame running back of the Chicago Bears, to endorse July as Park and Recreation Month. In that initial meeting in the Vice President’s office, Bush said, “I commend the National Recreation
and Park Association, for they remind us how precious and wonderful life is.” Payton added to that sentiment by sharing what we, unfortunately, know to still be true today, “Children, and really this applies to all of us, at times must be ‘sold’ on recreation. I know my own four-year-old son, Jarett, is much more likely to be interested in an activity or a certain toy once he sees other children have found it to be a good time.” That year’s theme was centered around “Celebrate July” and NRPA’s tagline at the time, “Life. Be in it.” The Internet didn’t really exist yet, so toolkits were mailed out and NRPA members could then mail in their order forms for Park and Recreation Month merchandise. While the technology around Park and Recreation Month has certainly changed, the goals for “selling” everyone on parks and recreation have remained the same.
This year, they’re giving a nod to their history with a fun, throwback 1980s theme. But the crucial part of celebrating 30 years of Park and Recreation Month is looking at the enduring importance and impact parks and recreation makes in all of our lives.

Those first two endorsers of Park and Recreation Month went on to do immensely impactful things. Bush became President and skydived on his 90th birthday. Walter Payton went on to be a champion for organ donations and has an award in his name given to football players who exemplify community service. Much like them, Park and Recreation Month has evolved to be more impactful year after year. While they focus a lot on the fun and programming of Park and Recreation Month, they also aim to pair this with an important message about the impact of parks and recreation.

This organization has been serving the local community since its creation in 1985 by providing library and recreation services to the residents of Palm Harbor. The building that now serves as CSA’s headquarters, as well as The Centre, Palm Harbor’s community center was built in 1999 as the Palm Harbor Senior Center with Penny for Pinellas funds. However, without any steady, ongoing funding, the senior center fell into financial trouble within four years. At the same time, Parks and Recreation was operating out of an old, 3 bedroom house that was inadequate for its needs. So, in 2003, the Agency’s board agreed to merge with the

MilPro Publications Senior Center on a trial basis, using its facility to expand its own recreation services while keeping the senior activities going. It was a “win-win” situation that was made permanent in 2004. This mutually beneficial “marriage” between the two entities saved the Senior Center. Some 10 years later, senior activities remain firmly programmed on the agenda, and, the “marriage” is thriving. But, an unintended result was that many locals remained confused about what this key facility was called, what was offered or how it all tied together. So to set the record straight, to support and generate income to sustain its commitment to affordable and accessible programs and services, and to firmly establish a course for growth and expansion, the managing staff rebranded the business and all of its operations as CSA Palm Harbor and renamed the community center building complex The Centre of Palm Harbor in May 2012.

In the three years since the CSA Palm Harbor brand was introduced to the community, the organization has continued to thrive. Under the leadership of Erica Lynford, Director, and Trish Harrison, Assistant Director, the team is adept at getting more done with less and boasts a full-time staff of about 20 as well as 100+ volunteers, which has nearly doubled in the last 2 years. The part-time support CSA gets from its volunteers is invaluable,
assuring both a connection to the community, people dedicated to the mission and extra hands to get the job done. In August 2013, the historic White Chapel and adjoining Harbor Hall joined the ranks of CSA-operated and managed facilities. Booked nearly every weekend since, these venues are located in downtown Palm Harbor and help to round out CSA’s offerings. CSA calendars are full with programs, classes and activities for youth, adults and seniors at all of its venues. Registration, most of which is now available online through the CSAPalmHarbor.org website, continues to exceed expected counts. Each outdoor venue has enjoyed needed upgrades and welcome improvements that make the fields safer, more functional and a better play environment. Yearround community events, whether sponsored by CSA or in partnership with other community groups are better attended than ever before so there’s no doubt that the people of Palm Harbor are connecting with CSA Palm Harbor.

on, where does CSA go from here? Well, the course is to remain true to its mission and vision. It plans to do that by working toward goals which have been at the heart of its business plan for the last three years. But probably the biggest undertaking on the horizon and for the next several years is the addition of a multi-purpose sports field and development of green space on the existing 5 acres at The Centre’s current campus. Director Erica Lynford tells us that, “Significant development progress has been made in the last

two years which got us to the point that we received the necessary zoning exception that would allow us to move forward.” According to Lynford, once that was in place, the site plan development has really begun to take shape. Over the next several years, the CSA Team will determine the best way to proceed and raise funds to make this ‘Field of Dreams’ a reality. BUILD-A-MODEL CAMP The Armed Forces History Museum is pleased to announce
MilPro Publications that its ever-popular BuildA-Model Camp is returning for multiple dates in 2015. The museum’s Build-A-Model Camp offers a bevy of amenities to children while providing families with quality interaction and fun. Each child receives his or her own take home model to build alongside professionals from the Pelikan Model Club. They also receive a set of customized dog tags, a ride on the museum’s Virtual Voyager Simulator like those seen at popular theme parks, full access to the museum and discount admission for parents. With a value of $50, the BuildA-Model Camp is just $18 per child. Parents are admitted for $9.95 (regularly $17.95).
