Most recently, our minds and hearts have been captured by the 2012 Olympic Girls Gymnastic team, otherwise known as the “Fab Five,” Gabby Douglas, Jordyn Wieber, Aly Raisman, McKayla Maroney and Kyla Ros, not to mention Nadia Comaneci, Shannon Miller, Mary Lou Retton, Paul Hamm, Chellsie Memmel and Carly Patterson, among many others. According to industry experts, local gyms see an average 20% boost to enrollment during an Olympic year, as thousands of young kids (mostly girls) set out to emulate their new found heroes. The numbers drop off as the year goes on and the sport recedes from the spot light as the reality of hard work sets in. They start as young as three years of age, hopefully beginning a path that will take them to become one
of the elite few who compete at the Olympic level. The chances? Well, let the numbers speak for themselves. There are approximately 110 gymnastics clubs in Florida with 300-500 members in each club. At 500 kids times 110 clubs, there
track, heading for state, regional and national competition or you are on the non-competitive track where you practice the sport and participate in house tournaments.

When one thinks of cheerleading, the most common image, a football game, comes to mind. But cheerleading and tumbling is much more than that. There is an abundance of cheerleading competitions at the state, regional and national level. The tumbling aspect (floor routines) is also incorporated in gymnastics programs and many competitive cheerleaders are also accomplished gymnasts. Unlike gymnastics, the tumbling aspect in done in a group, as opposed to individually.

After suffering a devastating fire in June 2014 due to arson, Apollo has reopened with all new equipment, more space, and a better layout of the gym. Owners Brian Finnegan and Jessica Carillon are excited for everyone to see all the new changes. Apollo School of Gymnastics offers a variety of programs and services with the focus of developing the whole child through an innovative curriculum that stimulates both the physical and cognitive domains. Katelyn is a 3 time All Around State Champion and 2 time Regional All Around Champion. In 2013, Katelyn received the highest All Around score on both days of the XCEL Regional Competition out of over 200 gymnasts from eight states and left the competition with six gold medals. She was also selected as one of six gymnasts in Florida to compete as a member of the state team at the Regional Championship and “Team Florida” was awarded the 1st place title in the Region! Most recently, Katelyn was recognized as a Level 7 All Around State Champion as well as a Level 7 Regional Silver Medalist on Floor in 2014. Katelyn started gymnastics when she was 2 years old and has truly enjoyed the sport over the past 10 years. Her goal is to continue training and compete in collegiate gymnastics someday.
Classes are offered to boys and girls ages 1 and up in recreatonal and competitive gymnastics, trampoline and tumbling, adult fitness and homeschool gymnastics. There is an after school program which includes transportation from area schools.
The goals for their students go beyond pointed toes and proper shapes. They also hope to play a part in the development of individuals who possess the self-confidence

In the spring of 2002, the Pups team was started shortly followed by a Sr. All-girl team in the fall. By 2004 the Florida Top Dog All-Stars had grown to seven competitive all star teams including a Special Needs team that proudly goes by the name ‘Top Dog Too’. Just Tumblin’ is home to the Florida Top Dog Cheer Program. The Just Tumblin’ facility is a fully outfitted 16,000 square foot multi-use gymnasium that is built using all inground training apparatuses. This state of the art facility is ideal for cheerleading, gymnastics, dance and much more.
Athletes are encouraged to take advantage of the facility by taking extra classes or by coming in to work one-on-one with an instructor. The Top Dog teams are challenged to always strive to be the best together as one and to have fun while working hard. Being a part of Florida Top Dog means being a part of a winning program! The past 15 years have brought numerous successes including: 235 National Titles, 36 State Titles, 26 Regional Titles, and 47 Grand Champion/High Point Finishes. The Top Dog program has attended the Cheerleading Worlds seven times, finishing in the top 11 three out of the seven years. Since it began in 2012, Top Dog has had the honor of taking five teams to The Summit with three of them going on a full paid bid. Born in Safety Harbor, the 4,’ 50 pounder is a first grader at Forest Lakes Elementary School where he lists art as his favorite subject. Luke’s favorite movie is Big Hero Six and Avatar tops his list of favorite TV shows. Aang, who is the avatar, is his number one TV character. When not training in the gym, Luke enjoys playing piano, his religious education, Legos, riding his scooter and playing chess with his brother and sister. His favorite sports team is the Florida Gators and Tim Tebow is his top rated athlete. When asked the question, “What is the biggest problem in society today?” Luke’s response was, “Too much garbage in the ocean and not enough people recycling.” Luke’ future plans include becoming an engineer.

A NEW FANGLED SPORT HITS TAMPA BAY
Remember how much fun you had driving Bumper Cars at Busch Gardens? Crashing into your buds and bros was a blast, right? Now imagine that the ENTIRE car is a giant bubble, and your feet are the wheels... Introducing Bubble Ball Soccer! Imported from Norway, it’s the newest, silliest, goofiest sport to hit the bay area. Just vaguely resembling a normal game of soccer, the game consists of players trying to score goals by kicking a soccer ball into the opposing team’s net. This, however, is where the similarity ends! The players are encased in giant, bouncy hamster-balls, equipped with inside shoulder harnesses and handles, with their legs sticking out the bottom. As owner/operator Kim Ward further explains, “You will have a hard time not laughing, when you bump into opponents while trying to kick a soccer ball into the net.” It’s a laugh riot for the spectators, too. As players crash into each other, they ricochet in opposite directions. Some safely somersault and land elegantly on their feet, others not so much... imagine a turtle stuck on its back, with its feet flailing in the air... It’s comical for sure, but bubble baller Robert Whitcomb of Largo said it’s tougher than it looks. “When you’re looking at the goal or the ball or the other players, everything is a little

distorted because of the plastic,” he said during a recent demonstration game at Safety Harbor Waterfront Park. So players inevitably collide. But never before has falling down been so gosh darned fun! “I love to roll around and crash into people,” said Whitcomb’s son Riley, 8. Kim Ward, also owner of Tampa Bay SUP Stand Up Paddleboard and Kayak, started Tampa Bay Bubble Ball Soccer in September. She regularly holds open plays at Safety Harbor Waterfront Park for $20 per person. She also brings the equipment and referees to other locations for birthday parties, church activities, family reunions and corporate team building events. Prices vary depending on location, number of players and so on. “It’s the perfect activity because you don’t have to know how to play soccer and anyone of any age or fitness level can play,” she said. Ward is also working on starting a bubble ball soccer league.

Bubble Ball Soccer loosely follows traditional soccer rules. For example, there is
no Off-Sides! You start the game with the soccer ball in the middle of the field. The players stand on their prospective goal lines and when the ref blows the whistle, everyone runs to the ball at the same time, resulting in some Bubble Ballers rolling around on the ground! The real fun is just beginning because when you crash into another player, both of you will go flying in different directions. Each team typically has 5 players and at least 1 substitute. The game is exhilarating and exhausting so Kim recommends you bring a sub if possible; substitutions can be made during the game as needed. There are 4 periods lasting 12 minutes each with a few 2 minute breaks. Tampa Bay Bubble Ball Soccer has scheduled open play games for Saturday and Sunday, January 10th and 11th at 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. at Safety Harbor Waterfront Park, 110 Veterans Memorial Lane. Philippe coaches the compulsory and optional teams and encourages his gymnasts to set high goals, work very hard and have fun at the same time! Team Coach: Tracy BartlettMaggiacomo is a native Texan who began her gymnastics career at the age of 2. From the age of 9 until she was 12, she trained under the tutelage of Bela Karolyi as an optional gymnast. After college, in 1995 she became the preschool director at her gym. Tracy then moved to Jacksonville, NC in 1996 and became an Assistant Gym Director and Head Team Coach. She coached many state champions and helped several gymnasts through to the collegiate level. In 2001, Tracy moved to Tampa where she joined Gemini Gymnastics as Gym Director through 2004. Team Coaches: Taryn Falls, Joseph Harrison and Carina Micheloni

She was a member of the USSR National Team, and also has 10 years of coaching experience. Pre-School and Recreational Coach: Jennifer Piccari is in her 32nd year of teaching elementary school. She currently teaches at St. Joseph Catholic School in Tampa. For the past 7 years, she has been coaching pre-school and recreational classes in the afternoon to the young up and coming gymnasts at Victory GTC. She enjoys seeing the children succeed in their goals and takes pride in their accomplishments. Pre-School and Recreational Coach: Tristin Canham is former Victory GTC’s owner, Viktor’s, gymnasts, who advanced into coaching careers, while still studying in the high school.
The 13,000 s.f. gym is well equipped for the girls and boys to train on the balance beam, bars, floor and vault. Boys of age 5+ are trained by “Oldsmar Boys” Gymnastics, that is located within Victory’s gym. Students of every skill level are welcome at Victory Gymnastics Training Center, and are challenged to push themselves, receiving guidance from experienced coaches. Dedication, desire, courage, respect and a serious work ethic are some of the traits the coaching staff wishes to instill in its young gymnasts. And we do mean young! Children can start learning as early as 18 months old in the “Parent and Me” class. From toddlers who are just learning to tumble, to those who aspire to win championships, Victory Gymnastics Training Center offers training for USAG Girls’ Competitive Gymnastics Program, Girls’ Recreational Gymnastics and Tumbling. Private lessons are available, as well.

Adjacent to the reception area is a Pro Shop, stocked with essentials like hand tape and snazzy leotards, and plenty of snacks and drinks. A Birthday Party Room is brightly decorated and doubles as a lunchroom during summer camps, and sometimes it’s a quiet place for parents to catch up on emails, or they can enjoy watching from the spacious observation area. Many students who train at Victory Gymnastics Training Center excel at the sport of gymnastics. Head Coach Viktor Savitski is a former Elite gymnast from Ukraine and National Team Member with a Masters Degree in Physical Education. During the past 30 years, he has coached an Olympic Bronze Medalist, Wendy Bruce, Olympians Morgan White and Mohini Bhardwej, and National Champion Ashley Shible. Many of his gymnasts have been awarded full college scholarships. Gymnastics is more than a sport!
