THE 2014 ROAD TO WILLIAMSPORT T
he long Road to Williamsport starts well before the Little League All Star Tournament starts in July. It starts in December in club houses and rec centers, as managers pour over registration forms and stat pages. It starts on baseball diamonds all over the country where 11 and 12 year old kids shag fly balls and field grounders under the watchful eyes of managers, coaches and parents during tryouts. The Road to Williamsport is a long and winding one that starts with thousands of kids and ends with ten or twelve hoisting the trophy in the most recognized youth sports event in the country, the Little League Major Baseball World Series and it all ends in Williamsport.
AAU Baseball may have more talented teams, Big League Baseball may tout the latest college prospects, but nothing captures the drama, the excitement and hopes and dreams quite like the Little League World Series. The West Pasco All-Stars had run through the competition in pool play like a hot knife through butter. Their hitters put up an avalanche of runs each game and their pitching staff were misers, allowing just a bit more than a half a run per inning. Over in Pool A the Dunedin All-Stars were also undefeated in pool play, producing big offensive numbers while their hurlers were almost as stingy as West Pasco’s.
West Pasco went into the semi finals against Palm Harbor averaging a bloated 15.75 runs per game. Palm Harbor found a way to quiet their bats, allowing just six West Pasco runners to cross the plate, but were held to just one lone run in a 6-1 loss. In the other semi-final, Dunedin lit up Largo pitching for 13 runs en route to a 13-7 victory setting up the Pasco-Pinellas showdown for the District 12 title. Ethan Hurst was handed the ball for West Pasco and strolled out to the bump to start the top of the first. After enticing the lead off hitter, Elijah Branch to fly out to center for the first out, things began to unravel. Ian Adams’ screamer to third was misplayed by Evan Long,

good pitches, but the ball was like a magnet to the West Pasco bats and Stevens could not buy an out. Sean Martin ripped a base hit up the middle, knocking in Hawks to give West Pasco a 6-4 lead. Stevens got ahead on the count to clean up man Ethan Hurst, but left a fast ball over the plate that Hurst crushed for a two run double, extending the consecutive hits to six. Stevens fanned Robbie Steel to get the first out of the inning, but Hurst swiped third during the at bat. Evan Long worked the count for a base on balls and in the process, Hurst scored on a passed ball to make the score 9-4. Doug Long went down swinging and Stevens enticed Nick Fritz (up for the second time in the inning) to ground out to third to finally end the inning. Now the Dunedin bats needed to chip away at the lead with the heart of the order coming up in the top of the third. Confidence is a big part of pitching; if you have it, your fast ball is just a bit faster and you find the corners with your off speed stuff.
West Pasco came to bat in the bottom of the third feeling like they could hit anything, but Charles Stevens was about to take the proverbial wind out of the sails (well, bats), of the West Pasco hitters. Stevens got Depecol to dribble one back to the mound for the first out. Up next was lead off man Travis Hawks, who was 2-2 with a two bagger and an HR. Stevens brought the heat inside to move Hawks off the plate, but clipped the West Pasco short stop, sending him to first. Hawks went to second on a passed ball, but that is where he would stay, as Stevens would not get rattled. Abbott bounced out short to first and Martin hit a lazy fly ball to left to end the inning. Stevens did his job by holding the score in check. After the 1-2-3 third inning, Depecol was now on cruise control and started the top of the fourth by striking out Jason Macaroni on three pitches. Up next, Nolan Ford worked the count for a free pass, putting a runner on for Dunedin. One hit at a time... that’s what Lucas Passchino must have been thinking as he dug in at the plate. Passchino watched a pitch go by, then put the barrel on the ball and drilled a hot shot in the hole that was destined for daylight. In an instance, second base man Chris Abbott reached out and snagged the smash, stepped on second and uncorked a canon blast to first to complete the double play and take a bit more wind out of the Dunedin sails.
Ethan Hurst led of the bottom of the fourth by rapping a base hit up the middle. Hurst swiped second while pinch hitter David Hubiel was at the plate. Down by five, Dunedin hurler Charles Stevens now had a runner in scoring position and could not afford to allow another base runner to cross the plate. With two outs, pinch hitter Josh Tremmel gave the Dunedin hurler a scare, lifting a long fly ball that was corralled by Santa Maria in left to end the inning. Time, or more accurately, outs were running out for Dunedin as they came to the plate in the top of the fifth, still down by five runs, with just six outs left. Depecol fell behind Nathan Hubbard, yielding a lead off walk. Up next, Elijah Branch ripped a base hit to left, putting runners at the corners. With nobody out, center fielder Ian Adams tapped a slow roller down the third base line. Hubbard bolted for home on the crack of the bat and West Pasco’s third sacker, Evan Long, charged the ball. With no chance to get Hubbard, Long threw out Adams at first as Hubbard crossed the plate, cutting the lead to four. In all the hullaballoo of the play, Branch kept running and ended up on third base with just one out. An important stat is the ability to score a runner from third with less than two outs and Depecol was well aware of that as he faced the next batter, Landon Santa Maria. Depecol enticed Santa Maria to bounce to the typically sure handed Chris Abbott at second, but Abbott misplayed the

grounder, allowing Branch to score. Depecol reared back and smoked pinch hitter Dylan Long for the second out and Stevens lined to short to end the inning and limit the damage. With the lead cut to three, Stevens was in a groove of his own, as he took to the bump for the bottom of the fifth. He fanned pinch hitter, Colin Nolf to start the inning. Looking to help his own cause, Depecol lined a base hit to left. With Travis Hawks at the plate, Depecol swiped second to get into scoring position. Stevens got Hawks to fly to left, holding Depecol at second. With one on and two out, Stevens lost Chris Abbott, walking him to put runners on first and second. Stevens gathered himself and got Sean Martin to bounce harmlessly to first to end the inning and keep
the Dunedin hopes alive. Joey Depecol started the top of the sixth with a three run lead and was hoping for a quick inning as fatigue was setting in. Jason Macaroni led off the inning by bouncing out, shortto-first. Nolan Ford bounded back to the hill for out number two. Next up, Lucas Passchino crushed a 1-1 fast ball in the gap for a two bagger, keeping the inning alive. That would be all she wrote for Depecol as he reached the pitch count limit of 85, walking off the field to cheers from the West Pasco fans. Travis Hawks came on in relief to try and earn the save. Nathan Hubbard showed some patience at the dish as he worked the count for a free pass. Hawks’ control was just not there as he walked Elijah Branch to load the bases. With the score 9-6 and the bases jammed, manager Mike Shihadeh
made another call to the bullpen and brought in Colin Nolf to get the last out of the game. Two out, down by three, bases loaded... talk about pressure as Ian Adams dug his spikes into the dirt around home plate. Nolf’s first pitch... low and away... ball one. Adams whiffed at a fast ball to even the count. Nolf reared back and delivered a heater over the heart of the plate... Adams turned on the pitch, hitting it on the fat part of the bat and stroked a rocket down the third base line. At that moment, the game turned into slow motion, with Evan Long pivoting to his right, the three base runners taking off, Adams dropping his bat, taking one step to first and the sound of the ball smacking into Long’s glove... ending the moment, the game and Dunedin’s championship dreams.

As a Guardian ad Litem, you advocate in court and in the child welfare system for abused, abandoned, or neglected children. The Guardian ad Litem visits the child every month, becomes familiar with the child’s case, and makes recommedations to the court to help ensure the child has a safe, caring, and stable home. FLORIDA TOP DOGS AT NATIONALS The
first weekend in May was a magical weekend for the Florida Top Dog All-Stars Small Senior Level 4 team as they brought home the biggest national championship in the all star industry ~The Summit. The Summit is a prestigious end of the year all-star cheerleading competition held at Wide World of Sports in Orlando for levels 1-4. Ten percent of the nation’s top allstar teams are invited to attend by qualifying at national and state events across the country. These events offer both at-large as well as paid bids to attend The Summit. The Top Dog G4 team has been to
The Summit the last two years on fully paid bids (approximately a $12,000 package) and won their divisions in 2013 as well as in 2014. Last year, they were a coed team with three boys and 17 girls and won the Small Coed 4 Division and this year, went on to win the AllGirl Division, with a score of 97.8, as they competed against 38 of the nation’s top level 4 teams. This Top Dog team is coached by the family trio of mom, Linda Roscoe and her two daughters, Kim and Ashley Roscoe. Earlier in the year, this team and Top Dog’s Small Coed Level 3 team both won the very big competition Coaches Kim and Ashley Roscoe wrap themselves in the championship banner.
CheerSport Nationals in Atlanta. This was the first time Top Dog ever won CheerSport titles. These two teams, plus Top Dog’s Large Junior 3 team were honored to compete at The Summit this May. When we asked Linda Roscoe how she felt about winning this year’s Summit, she replied, “The thrill and excitement of winning The Summit once is amazing, but winning it twice, back to back, is indescribable.”
