Tissue Paper Flowers

6 Reasons Why...

You will need: • 1 large sheet of tissue paper (50cm x 70cm) makes 2 flowers • Green pipe cleaners • Scissors Instructions 1 Cut the sheet of tissue paper in half along the longer side, then cut each half into 3 similar sized rectangles (approx 35cm x 18cm). Lay 3 of the rectangles of tissue paper on top of one other. From the shorter end, fold all 3 sheets over about 2.5cm. Continue folding backwards and forwards to create a concertina fold along the length of the paper. 2 Trim the corners of each end. These will create the edges of the petals, you can use your imagination; do you want rounded petals, pointed petals? Why not make a few different ones? 3 Find the centre of your tissue paper by folding the ends together. Place your pipe cleaner along the fold. Wrap it around the tissue paper and twist to secure it in place. 4 Carefully open out the concertina on one side. Then separate the 3 layers of tissue paper to create the petals of your flower. Be careful not to rip the tissue paper. Open out the concertina on the other side of your flower. Display in a vase, or attach to the front of a spring card! www.beadingbrilliant.co.uk

Deciding what to wear and the role play that follows stretches your child’s imagination and will often reflect their own experiences and what they see around them.

It is great practice for young children to get dressed and use zips, buttons, press studs and laces. Dressing up encourages new vocabulary and conversation as they tell stories and inter-act with other children and adults. Through role play children can express their feelings and become more aware of the feelings of others which encourages them to empathise with others.

Dramatic play enables young children to recall what they have seen and make decisions on how to react. It also encourages older children to imagine new situations, scenarios and even make plays. All children can benefit from teamwork in play and gain confidence and greater self expression.

It’s FUN and great for children to escape sometimes and become a pirate, princess, super hero or just a mini adult!! Scour the charity shops, add some things of your own and fill a special box for them to rummage in!

Hunting for treasure! Now is the season of treasure hunts with the search for chocolate treats as the staple of Easter fun. Why not harness your children’s acquisitive natures and set up a Scavenger Hunt game to keep them entertained too. They are very simple and inexpensive to devise and you can use items to hand. You won’t be hampered by the weather as they can be done inside or out. And best of all you can introduce a little learning without the kids realising! Prepare your scavenger list by defining some specific items which have to be found. Your children can work in small teams or singly: Colour Scavenger Hunt Help your toddler learn their colours by hunting for items by colour. Older kids will be surprised by the myriad hues that can be found all around them. Nature Scavenger Hunt Next time you go on a family walk, challenge your children to spot all the living things they can see, from birds to butterflies. Budding artists can draw their finds. In the Dark Scavenger Hunt Hunting is always more fun in torch light! See what your kids can find at night as they search the outdoors for bugs and slugs. They might even catch sight of bats and barn owls too. Neighborhood Scavenger Hunt There is always much to discover in your own neighborhood. Take a walk around the block and spot everything from garden gnomes to street signs! These are just a few ideas to inspire your creativity. Have fun!

SPRING ACTIVITIES

Oreo Truffles An easy recipe for a special treat at Easter (or any time really!!) Great for making and decorating with the kids! Ingredients Makes around 20 • 200g Oreo Biscuits • 100g Cream cheese • 200g Chocolate • Vanilla extract • Sprinkles/decorations • And/or tubes of icing

Method 1 Weigh your Oreo biscuits out and crush them. Either put them into a strong food bag and bash them with a rolling pin or blitz in a food processor until fine crumbs. 2 Put the cream cheese in a large bowl and add a generous splash of vanilla extract and mix well. OR, if your crumbs have been blitzed in the food processor, add the cream cheese and extract and blitz again.

3 If mixing in a bowl add the Oreo crumbs gradually to the cream cheese and vanilla mix and stir thoroughly. It will become harder to mix but ensure you add most of it. (If you have crumbs left over, it’s a perfect topping for the truffles once they’ve been coated in chocolate). 4 Take a teaspoon of the Oreo mixture and if the mixture is quite firm roll into a ball and place on greaseproof paper (if too sticky shape into balls when the mixture has been chilled). When all the truffles are done place in the fridge to chill for at least 2 hours, they will become harder and less sticky which will make applying the chocolate easier. 5 When the truffles are chilled, break the chocolate up, place in a bowl and melt either carefully in the microwave

or over a pan of boiling water. Using a fork, spear the truffles and dip into the melted chocolate. Let the excess chocolate drop back into the bowl and ease the truffle back onto the greaseproof paper using a second fork.

6 Decorate with sprinkles, decorations or dust with the left over Oreo crumbs while still wet and chill again in the fridge until set OR chill until the chocolate is set then decorate with the tubes of icing and leave to set again...Enjoy!!

Places to Walk Abinger Roughs (National Trust): White Downs Lane, Abinger Hammer RH5 6QS Visited by Charles Darwin in the 1870s, the Roughs the Roughs are a mix of woodland and grassland and home to some oak trees which are hundreds of years old. A fantastic spot for nature lovers and young explorers.

Bransland Wood (National Trust): Bletchingley RH1 5PD The Wood is part of the Harewoods estate which is over 2,000 acres of land, being made up of a mix of farmland, woodland, common land and ponds. Chantry Wood: near Salford, Guildford A short distance from Guildford town centre, approx 200 acres of woodland and meadows. Views are stunning overlooking Chilworth, Chinthurst Hill and St Martha’s.The bluebells in the spring are spectacular.

Holmwood Common (National Trust): Blackbrook Road, Holmwood RH5 4NX Dappled woodland and sunny clearings making beautiful countryside for walking, horse riding and cycling. The common is fairly flat and ideal for families to explore, but it can be muddy underfoot, 01306 712711 Ranmore Common (National Trust): Ranmore West car park, RH5 6SY Ranmore Common has some of the richest chalk grasslands in south east England. The Downs tumble towards to the pretty village of Westcott with beautiful views in all directions. There is also access to Polesden Lacey to the north or Denbies Hillside to the east.
