This year is the 150th anniversary of the children’s charity Barnardo’s and the rain did not stop the intrepid toddlers of The Mount PreSchool from their annual fundraising Big Toddle. This year’s theme was ‘Wild Animals’ and the 2-4 year olds dressed up in animal costumes to walk around the Quaker school’s spacious playing fields, spotting special ‘wild animal’ pictures that were dotted along the route and marking them off on a check-list. Janine Tanner, Head of the Busy Bees (2-3 year olds) said, “The rain is not dampening anyone’s spirits this morning. The children are very excited and because this is York they are used to going out in all weathers. We are just starting looking at wild animals so it’s a fun way for the children to combine their topic work with an adventure.”

First Steps Celebrate New Space

First Steps Nursery based on the site of the Roko Health Club at Clifton Moor have been in their fantastic purposebuilt nursery for just over a year having been previously located within the club for the past seven years. Part of their long-term plan was to make some improvements to their sizeable garden area so nursery manager Amanda Nutbrown and her team have been busy designing new and interactive areas for the children to enjoy. “We have added some engaging resources from a road works corner to a maths area and also a sensory area for the children to enjoy,” said Amanda. “ and these new activities are already being well received by the children.” First Steps @ roko currently have some baby places available for immediate start. Brackenfield School in Harrogate is celebrating the fantastic news that the school has been recognised as outstanding in all areas by Ofsted following a recent inspection. The Inspectors were glowing in their praise of the school highlighting the excellent balance of the pastoral care and academic curriculum which meant that the children are “confident learners who have a wealth of opportunity to excel in a range of activities”. The Head teacher, Mrs Patricia Sowa, lead the inspection of the school, saying that it had been “a very proud moment when the enthusiasm, skills and dedication of the staff was recognised by the inspection team.” Achieving such as accolade has become increasingly difficult under the new Common Inspection Framework introduced in 2015 and Brackenfield was able to demonstrate that pupils are extremely well prepared for secondary school with the ‘vast majority of pupils making exceptional progress from their starting points’. Mrs Sowa also pointed out that this achievement is in the context that Brackenfield is a non-selective independent school which aims to foster a lifelong love of learning in all of its pupils and supports every individual child to be the best that they can be. It’s one of the biggest transitions of childhood: moving to secondary school. From travelling independently to remembering when homework is due in, your child will need to become a good deal more self-sufﬁcient. Here’s how to ease the transition… During the months before your little one makes the big move to secondary school, it’s recommended that you begin the following…

Ramp up responsibilities

Senior school children have to be considerably more responsible for their own belongings and themselves. Whereas primary school teachers send letters to parents, at ‘big’ school, communication on day-to-day issues might well be to your child only. Begin by trying to remind your child less about what kit or books they need daily.

Begin building independence out and about

Most secondary school pupils travel to school minus mum and dad, so get yours used to being out without you. It’ll be less daunting for them if this starts on the journey to primary school, rather than being thrown into travelling alone on a lesser-known route. If they haven’t started walking to school alone or with a friend already, the summer term of year six is a good time to begin. The first time or two you could walk a little behind them at least part of the way to keep an eye out.

Listen out for concerns

Some children take this huge change in their stride and are ready to move on, while others will feel anxious. Common concerns include getting lost around a much larger school, dealing with the journey, making new friends and managing the homework load. The key is to keep communication going between you – ask now and then how they’re feeling about their new school and listen and reassure them.

Attend settling-in days

Here are a few tips to keep in mind once your child has started secondary school… Expect them to be tired and emotional…

Many year sevens get very tired thanks to the ‘newness’, on top of a longer day and a more complicated journey. Stick to early nights and restful weekends to fend off exhaustion – and the moodiness that goes with this.

Get super-organised with homework

At primary, pupils might only have had a small amount of homework; expect the game to be raised now. Not only will there be more but keeping on top of when it all needs handing in can be complicated. Help your child help themselves by suggesting they complete each task soon, so that it doesn’t build up. A homework planner can also be useful.

Most secondaries hold a session for new joiners, usually during the summer term of year six. This is an important opportunity to get to know the buildings, potential classmates and teachers and it should make the first day less intimidating. Consider attending any social events at the school too, such as a concert or the summer fair.

Get used to knowing much less about what goes on

Introduce them to other children going to the same school

It’s tempting to think this independence means you’re being made redundant come September but they’ll still need you - albeit in different ways. Be there as a sounding board - someone to listen and advise. And of course, they’ll still be calling upon the Bank of Mum and Dad and parental taxi service more than ever…

This won’t matter so much if half your child’s class is heading to the same secondary but if there won’t be a familiar face, try and find prospective classmates through the local grapevine and then arrange a meet up.

In primary, you might well have been at the school gates most days and familiar with your child’s friends, parents and teachers. This will change: with independent travel comes a more hands-off approach.

When school ends, make sure the learning doesn’t! Becky Nicholson, Manager of the First Class Learning Centre in York explains Summer Learning Loss and what can be done to prevent it.

Teachers have long known about it and academics have researched it in depth. Summer Learning Loss describes how children lose academic skills, knowledge and abilities over the long summer holidays. Research has shown that a vast majority of children sitting the same test in July and again in September will score less well the second time round, due to the fact that over the summer they have done very little or no schoolwork. At best, students show little or no academic growth over the summer; and at worst, they lose on average between one and three months’ learning. The learning loss is greatest in mathematics and spelling. So what can be done? One option is to explore out of school tuition and summer schools that run in the summer holidays. Many First Class Learning centres are

open during the summer months, giving children the opportunity to continue practising their skills, and it needn’t be much! Only 10-15 minutes a day can make a huge difference and give children a head start in September. Children are encouraged to come to the tuition centre once a week to receive expert revision and tuition in age and ability-related maths and English tasks, in a pleasant, relaxed and supportive environment. Children will be able to take work home to consolidate their learning. With many schools closed for nearly seven weeks this summer, parents may wish to consider a bit of extra tuition. It will have a double benefit; their child’s brains will be ticking over so they don’t forget too much before their new school year starts, and it will keep the little angels occupied… for at least a few hours anyway!

2016 RioOlympics Olympian Adrian Moorhouse talks to Families

With the Rio Olympics only a matter of weeks away, Claire Winter talks to Olympian Adrian Moorhouse MBE about life after winning gold. Adrian Moorhouse MBE was a world champion at 22, and Olympic gold medallist in the 100m breaststroke at Seoul two years later. He now uses the skills he learned as a swimmer in his performance coaching business, Lane4 based in Bourne End, Bucks. I talked to him about his life as a professional athlete, his business and commentating at this year’s Olympics. Having learned to swim at the age of six, he went on to swim for his teacher’s club, then for his school in Yorkshire. It all changed when he started swimming for the City of Leeds Swimming Club. “By 15 I was swimming 20 hours a week. I was tired and my schoolwork suffered, although I did ok at what we now call GCSEs. But on the positive side, I had massive progress in swimming at the age of 15. I won the national age groups for my age but I also came second in the senior championships. At the age of 15 I was on the junior and senior British team. “From the age of 16 I became the British number one for men. By 17 I was third in Europe and by 18 I had won the Commonwealth Games. “I left school and went to university in America for a while and learnt great

technique around nutrition, psychology and strength training and came back to the UK to Leeds.

“I had reached the pinnacle of success in 1986 at the age of 22 when I was world number one, at 23 I broke the world record and at 24 I got gold at Seoul and I had even better years after that. I competed in two other Olympics, 1992 was my last Olympics and I retired at 28.”

“Equally you need to teach your children about staying power. You’ve got to help kids look at focus and commitment. Try and find out why they don’t want to do something and give them a reason to continue with it.

“I am really happy to be commentating at Rio. A fantastic British swimmer, Adam Peaty, has recently won the European Championships. He’s also a breaststroker and won the World Championships last year. So he goes into Rio in the same position I was in, when I won the gold at Seoul. It will be the first time we have had someone win it since I won back in 1988.”

“At 12 and 13 kids often get dispirited because they are coming fifth or sixth but if they keep practicing they will improve. Tell them to compare yourself, against yourself, rather than another individual and most importantly, be the best that you can be.”

We turned to discussing being a parent and how to encourage our kids in sport.

Cultural camping For us, one of the biggest pains when travelling as a family with young children is the undeniable nightmare of eating in restaurants on a regular basis. It’s hard enough to get Harrison to sit still at home let alone in an exciting new building or pavement café. And as for one year old Ella, who has just found her feet, a high chair is pretty much essential for keeping her strapped down, yet these are often nowhere to be found in restaurants abroad. But away from the main touristy resorts like the Spanish Costas and the Algarve, it’s hard enough to find a hotel room for four people, let alone one with cooking facilities; and we like our holidays seasoned with as much culture and sightseeing as we can bribe the children into. Which is why campsites can be a great compromise, the kids love the facilities and meeting other young families and we don’t have to worry about wasting hundreds of Euros on food the kids never eat. And if you pick your site wisely then you can squeeze in plenty of convenient sightseeing between visits to the beach and swimming pool. Here are three campsites I’d recommend for this summer.

Guincho, Lisbon It’s hard to believe that Guincho is within half an hour’s drive from a major European capital, such is the remote feeling of one of the

most dramatic beaches on the Atlantic coast. It’s certainly not a swimming beach because of the large waves that make this an excellent surfing spot, but the sand-dunes and wide expanse of beach are never busy, even in the height of summer. Guincho campsite is a ten minute walk from the beach across a series of sand dunes, but don’t let that put you off because pushchair friendly walkways have been built through the dunes. And if you’d prefer a beach where the kids can safely dip their toes then there are sheltered beaches just a couple of miles up the road, one of which is actually the back garden of a publicly owned stately home. Once you’ve had your fill of the beach head to Lisbon and ride one of the historic trams up the hills that the city is built upon, then take an Indian style Tuk-Tuk back down again; the children will love both. On the waterfront you’ll find monuments galore including Belem Tower, a Rio-esque statue of Christ the King and the sister bridge to San Francisco’s Golden Gate. If all that’s not enough to get your culture fix then head to Sintra, a twenty minute drive from the camp where the mountain town is dotted with so many unique castles and palaces that it made UNESCO status years ago.

Lake Garda The Italian lakes are prime campsite territory

and Eurocamp alone have eight sites in the area. The most convenient in my opinion are the three based in Peschiera del Garda because the local train station is on the main line from Milan to Venice, which opens up a multitude of options for squeezing in some sights. Verona, with its beautifully preserved Roman arena is less than half an hour away, while Venice and Milan can both be reached in an hour and a half. The beaches here are pebbly and tend to have well ordered rows of sunbeds and umbrellas, but there are plenty of less developed stretches of water to enjoy if that’s what you prefer. The water is relatively warm and very calm, so swimming or paddling is safe. There are other resort towns all around Garda and ferries link many of them to Peschiera in the warmer months. If you only visit one of these then make sure it’s the walled town of Sirmione, which sits at the tip of a 4 km peninsular on the southern shore of the lake. It’s a magical destination, only accessible by boat or via the drawbridge of a 13th century castle.

Côte Vermeille Sitting just across the border from Spain’s Costa Brava is a beautiful stretch of French

coastline backed by the Pyrenees, known as the Côte Vermeille. For some reason the area is overlooked by UK package tour operators and the main resort Argelès-sur-Mer is something for a magnet for campers instead, with numerous upscale campgrounds, most featuring pools, on-site restaurants, bars and shops. The wide, sandy beaches are clean and the water is warm and pristine. You could easily while away your entire holiday on the beaches or never leave your campsite, such are the wealth of facilities. But if you’re looking for adventure then day trip opportunities abound by car or by train. Collioure is a small town a couple of miles down the coast, so picturesque that it sparked a new art movement-Fauvism- which attracted artists like Picasso to the area. Around forty minutes away is Figueres in Spain, where Salvador Dali was born and has a museum. It’s a compact city with a delightful old town and a castle, but the architectural highlight is the museum itself, which is as bizarre a building as much of Dali’s work. Barcelona is also possible in a longer day trip as is Carcassone, the medieval fortress settlement with more than two thousand years of history. With over 3 km of walls and 52 towers, it resembles a fairy tale fortress. Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves was partly shot here.

lakes and Côte Vermeille, with more than enough facilities to keep the family occupied for a week. It’s one of the few camping companies overseas not to charge a cleaning deposit, though you are expected to leave the place in a decent condition and wash the cooking utensils. Guincho is reached from Lisbon airport and realistically you will need to hire a car. Argeles sur Mer is easily reached from Girona airport in Spain, Carcassone or Montpellier airports in France. There is a train station so a car isn’t necessarily needed if arriving on the French side. Peschiera del Garda is best reached from Verona airport, though Brescia, Venice or any of the Milan airports are other options.

The Big Friendly Read This year’s summer reading challenge will be celebrating 100 years since one of our favorite authors, Roald Dahl, was born by running The Big Friendly Read. The Summer Reading Challenge is happening in every library and all children aged 5 and over are challenged to read six books over the summer holidays. Your library will give prizes for each book read and when those taking part have read 6 books they will get a medal and certificate. Those taking part in the Children’s University can also collect one of their stickers for each book read. In addition 100 children who complete the challenge in York will win the chance to attend a celebration event at Acomb Explore Library on Sunday 16th October, with the chance to win other prizes and take part in fun reading activities. Under 5s can get involved too. Little ones can sign up and collect stickers for each book read. When they have collected 6 stickers they too will receive a certificate. Best of all it is free to take part! As well as the Challenge there are have lots of events to take part in and you will find them all listed in the Big Friendly brochure. Not all are based on Roald Dahl’s books but all fit in with themes that he writes about. The chosen themes will be Invention, Mischief and Friendship and all these activities entitle you to one Children’s University sticker.
