Founder of Rosie’s Rainbow Fund receives prestigious accolade

Carolyn Mayling, founder of charity, Rosie’s Rainbow Fund, was chosen by Prime Minister David Cameron to receive the ‘Point of Light’ award. The award was presented by the MP for East Reading and Minister for Civil Society, Rob Wilson, this December at the John Radcliffe Children’s Hospital in Oxford. The award, which is given to individuals who work tirelessly for a charitable organisation and inspire others with their efforts, was given to Mrs Mayling in recognition of her work with the charity. children and their parents, in memory of her daughter Rosie. The award was planned to coincide with Mayling’s and Rosie Rainbow Fund’s visit to the John Radcliffe Children’s Hospital for #GivingTuesday. 2014 was the first time the event was held in the UK, and many organisations and charities partnered with the highly successful movement. Joining guests and trustees of the charity were eight members of the Redroofs School choir who performed a special song written by Mrs Mayling, in memory of her daughter, entitled ‘You Paint the Rainbow’. The song recently premiered in a new music video created in honour of Giving Tuesday and features performances from local children, including patients at John Radcliffe, as well as supporters from the US and South Africa, at a Charity Concert held at Henley Town Hall in November. The music video can be viewed at www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5x8XhrRD7w. To find out more about the charity or to donate go to www.rosiesrainbowfund.co.uk

A national campaign spearheaded by Save the Children, the CBI and the Teach First charity, to improve reading standards in the UK, is being backed by Berkshire charity ABC to Read. The Read On. Get On campaign, launched last year, comes in response to a specially commissioned report that sparked the fear that by 2025 1.5 million British children will reach the age of 11 unable to "read well". ABC to Read, which celebrated its 10th anniversary last year, has recently won the prestigious Queen’s Award. The charity has long since pioneered the cause for higher literacy rates and works with Berkshire children who are identified by their teachers as struggling to read. Anybody interested in becoming a volunteer for ABC to Read, or any schools interested in gaining support from the charity, should email: abctoread@btconnect.com; www.abctoread.org.uk The next course will run at the end of January 2015.

Why vocabulary is important

Education

Does your seven-year-old know 7,100 words? Extensive research shows that a person’s vocabulary level is the best single measure for predicting future occupational success. The importance of vocabulary to a child’s ability to succeed in school and beyond is why English and verbal reasoning make up one half of the 11+ exams in many selective schools. Indeed, parents often find these prove to be the most difficult tests for their bright children, and it is usually for one reason only: vocabulary. Research into learning vocabulary has given us some startling data: • Gaps in vocabulary appear as early as age three, and widen thereafter. • The extent of a child’s vocabulary at age five is so critical to the development of their perceiving, thinking, and understanding that it is used as a measure of these cognitive skills. • The top quarter of pupils know about 7,100 words by age seven, and add about three new ones each day. The bottom quarter have fewer than half as many words at that age – about 3,000; they acquire only about one word a day, so the gap continues to widen. • Early gaps in vocabulary and in language and communication skills are seldom made up in school. Clearly, vocabulary acquisition must start early. Parents need not invest time or money in specialist training, equipment, or software. Indeed, some of the same research also reveals what parents can do to build vocabulary at home from an early age: • Provide a rich language environment. The more parents talk to their children from birth to age three, the greater their children’s vocabulary, rate of vocabulary growth, and chances of success in school. • The early language environment should include teaching nursery rhymes. Children who learn eight nursery rhymes in their first three years typically rise to the top rank of readers by age eight.

Telephone: 01628 627 586

• Provide opportunities for play. Physical play teaches the vocabulary of the body, of space and of motion. Incorporate rhyme and song into physical play and vice versa. Organised games teach the vocabulary of rules and fair play. Imaginative play with toys, or home storytelling or theatrics, increases the vocabulary of general knowledge, of other times and places, and of thought and emotion. Spend time outdoors.Time spent with children outdoors – in varied locations and weather – can build vocabulary in nature, the physical world, commerce and society, even emotional states. Museums, parks, fields, gardens, a walk to the chemist or newsagents – can give you both time for relaxed conversation, and exposure to various new and familiar things to talk about. • Give your children and yourself the gift of daily reading. Read to your children for as little as ten minutes a day at a regular time – more depending on the children’s attention and interest. Much of the vocabulary gap correlating to socioeconomic status can be explained by parental behaviour: fewer than half of children from low income families are read to daily at age three; four out of five of the richest families read to their children daily. Three-year-olds who are read to every day tend to become five-yearolds who flourish in school. • When reading to young children, engage them with questions and conversation. The vocabulary of most seven-year-olds is mainly oral. Most of this vocabulary is acquired at home and in the world, from being read to and from conversing with adults. • Expose children to adult conversation whenever possible. Talk to them about events of the day and the realities of parents’ lives. Parents can increase children’s vocabularies by using less common words

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2015

in helpful, instructive or explanatory ways in ordinary conversation. Such use defies the effects of poverty and is independent of the parents’ level of formal education. • Ensure your children learn how to read. By school age, new vocabulary acquisition comes primarily from books. Children who read more have larger vocabularies. This correlation holds across a range of IQ scores and other measures of intellectual ability.Allow your children plenty of time for quiet reading. The amount of reading and size of vocabulary correlate to greater general knowledge. The more children read, the more they know and the better they learn. Children who read more also read more efficiently. The amount of reading done by the most reluctant reader in a year can be done by a keen reader in two days. Plan the Perfect Party Lets get this Party started! With help from Joanna Moorhead. A birthday party is the highpoint of the year for most children – you want to make sure it’s special every time. Families takes a look at some of the options… The traditional party What is it? An at-home for the birthday child and friends, with traditional games like pass the parcel (always a winner), pin the tail on the donkey and musical bumps. Who's it suitable for? Great for nursery and reception age children. Also popular with older kids, especially girls of eight or nine who love inviting their friends back to their house and having fun. The pros: You can keep the costs low; other parents often stay to help you out and to keep you company, especially if you promise a glass of Prosecco and some nibbles! The cons: You may need to redecorate afterwards; you'll certainly need to do a major tidy up and possibly lie down in a dark room for half an hour to recover! Top tips to make it work: 1. Throw in a few games they might not have played before. Try a doughnut eating competition - thread ring doughnuts onto string or a washing line at the correct height and eat without using your hands. A piñata filled with small prizes or sweets is also very popular and if all else fails a limbo competition will always put a smile on everyone’s faces. 2. Have a timetable for what's happening when, but be flexible as activities can take more or less time than you expect. 3. Think about a project such as build-abear kits, jewellery making or pirate games. A professional entertainer or party entertainment package, if your budget extends to it, will take the pressure off.

The action party What is it? Go-karting, dance, swimming, sports, bowling, etc. Who's it suitable for? Slightly older children, especially those with lots of energy who enjoy racing around. The pros: Your house remains intact; the kids have something to focus on, and lots of opportunities to let off steam. The cons: It can be more costly; although some options, such as a swimming pool party or trip to an adventure playground, can be good value. Top tips to make it work 1. An outside party, such as paintballing, obviously doesn’t work so well in the winter months so it might be best to postpone to the spring. 2. Take plenty of water, squash, snacks including fruit - they'll need plenty of energy for all that running around. 3. Make ABSOLUTELY sure you've checked all restrictions, e.g. height restrictions, beforehand - there's nothing worse than finding out on the day that one of your guests is too small to participate. Hire a venue party What is it? An indoor party in a hired venue, such as a church hall, health club or leisure centre.

Who's it suitable for? Children of any age. Under-5s will want to stay with their parents. The pros: A lot more space than they'd have if you were at home, plus no risk of your best carpet having mud and party food ground into it. The cons: You'll have to clean up afterwards. Top tips to make it work 1. Ask if you can borrow playgroup play equipment. 2. Have lots of help, and have tea reasonably early in the afternoon so you can get it tidied away before the end. 3. Consider hiring some entertainment or a party entertainer- the extra space will make it a lot more fun. Dance or Musical theatre parties, bouncy castles and discos are all great in a larger space. The soft play party What is it? A party at a soft play centre, gym or leisure centre that includes a play on the centre’s equipment and/or bouncy castle followed by tea in a themed or decorated party room. Who's it suitable for? Pre-schoolers to primary school age children who enjoy being active. The pros: A very easy party for parents

and great fun for kids. Centres usually provide a host and often offer a range of food and extra entertainment options such as face painting and party games. The cons: It can be expensive but offers good value for busy parents with little time to organise a birthday bash. Top tips to make it work 1. Make sure the venue is suitable for the age of the children – some cater only for little ones. 2. Check what catering options are available. At some leisure centres and gyms you will have to bring your own party tea, but this does make them cheaper. 3. Certain venues are VERY popular and you may need to book up well in advance. Check when booking opens for the date you would like and get in there fast! See our Party directory on pages 1214 for party ideas, entertainers, equipment and venues.

DECLUTTERING AND SELLING YOUR HOME...

Fresh Start

Whilst diets and promotions top many New Years’ resolution lists, January is also the perfect time to make the changes to your home that have been bugging you for months.

Before hirley Goodgroves from Real Interiors is a ‘Home Staging’ expert with a sharp eye and creative touch. She uses her experience and vision to look beyond clutter and mess and turns tired homes into attractive options that appeal to potential buyers.

S

Whether you are looking for a haven in the chaos of family life or want top dollar in the estate agent’s window, Shirley’s fail-safe tips will make you a property guru in 2015. Your house is worth more when it’s tidy according to a recent survey by Big Yellow Self Storage and 22% of buyers won’t make an offer on a property if its too cluttered. Have a big sort out in January and then try to keep on top of it a bit at a time. Be realistic! Your home was created over months and years so you won’t transform it in an hour. If it’s all too daunting, spend 10 minutes clearing out a kitchen drawer and once you start seeing results you’ll want to continue. If you are thinking of putting your home on the market this spring, assess what buyers might think of it. Have an evaluation done by a property professional and consider home staging to maximise your property value before you call the agent. Forget your personal taste, buyers are looking for neutral but not bland properties so it is essential that this is what you offer. You can introduce colour through accessories rather than paint. A

After properly dressed bed, vase of flowers and well-placed mirrors and pictures will transform your home into an attractive investment. Remember all those little jobs that you’ve been meaning to sort out but never got around to? Now is the time to fix the dripping tap, change the cracked tile and rehang dropped doors on cupboards. It’s true that wafts of baking bread and freshly brewed coffee create the perfect ambience for buyers but be warned - they will be put off by smells of animals, damp or cigarette smoke. If you do nothing else, ensure your house is clean. Sparkling windows and dust-free skirting boards will show a buyer this is a property that has been cared for and looked after. For assistance on staging your home for sale, de-cluttering when it’s all become too much or simply to feel happy with the home you are in, call Shirley at Real Interiors on 07866 566 141 for a solution that’s perfect for you.

Fresh Start How can Myofascial Release help you? By Sarah El-Hawary from Go Figure What is Myofascial Release? The term myofascial comes from the words myo (muscle) and fascia (connective tissue). Connective tissue plays many roles in the body; the myofascia is like a sinewy spider’s web that connects all tissue. Just like a muscle, this connective tissue can get tight and restricted. When this happens the myofascia tightens in a wringing method, pulling on the structures it is attached to. If the connective tissue is not released, it begins to pull these structures out of alignment. This in turn creates imbalances in our day-to-day functional movement. We begin to overuse some muscle

groups to compensate, while other muscles become weak and underused. Having been used for some time now by rehabilitation specialists, world-renowned Physical Therapist John Barnes has shown the value of Myofascial Release for day-to-day function, useful for every period in your life. In pregnancy it can be use to help prepare the mother’s body for delivery, creating a suppleness which complements the body’s own natural hormonal response to labor, allowing baby to travel through the birth canal unaided, and reducing the need for intervention. This suppleness also ensures less aches and pains during pregnancy, improving sleep (which during the latter few weeks in pregnancy can be scarce). For individuals who suffer from back pain, due to injury or bad posture, myofascial release helps with pain and improves range of movement. Current clients with back conditions such as Scoliosis or Kyphosis, who have practiced Pilates for years and never managed to achieve the release and range of movement with Pilates alone, have reported that their range of movement has increased and that their pain has reduced. Clients who have disc problems have also commented on how much it helps relieve the pain. How exactly does it work? Muscle has a stretch reflex response when taken beyond its current range of movement. The body has this response in order to protect itself. Several types of stretching have been known to have an increased benefit to improving muscle flexibility. However they do not address the possible tightness of the fascia. Just like muscles, myofascia can be damaged and become tight and restricted. Myofascial release works by applying gentle pressure to specific areas of the body to help release the fascia. This gentle pressure is held for up to 2 minutes, gently allowing the fascia to unwind. This unwinding process begins to travel further up the connective tissue, releasing other areas of the body. As the fascia releases, the structures it is attached to begin to return to their original position in the body – realigning. Once theses structure have realigned, the body begins to use them in its day-to-day movement patterns. How do we go about reversing this tightness and maintaining this release? Many professionals use myofascial release technique as part of their treatment method for clients. Incorporating it with Pilates allows us to release, realign and then strengthen weak muscles. The benefit of myofascial release when combined with Pilates, leads to an overall improved, functional movement of the body, improving posture, relieving tension and strengthening the body. A recent client who had been practicing Pilates for over 2 years, who also suffers from Rheumatoid Arthritis completed an 8-week one to one program incorporating myofascial release with Pilates. During this time there was an evident improvement in several weight bearing movements, increased range of movement through shoulders and feet and an overall drop in pain levels, which allowed her to take up other exercise classes she had avoided in the past. As our understanding of the body advances it is clear that we still have a lot to learn and incorporate in our exercises routines. If you would like to learn more, or to trial a Pilates class incorporating Myofascial Release, please visit www.gofigure.org.uk or call Sarah on 07938 588029

Try Something new in 2015

Fresh Start

Try Pilates in your fitness regime

Do something new, volunteer in 2015!

Personal trainer Tai Friedmann can create a bespoke workout to suit your fitness needs, which can include Pilates as part of your programme. Pilates will help to improve your strength and flexibility, as well as reduce your stress levels and improve your core stability and alignment. Whether you want to strengthen your game, de-stress or realign due to back problems, Pilates will help you. Pilates can also be used in pregnancy to help relieve joint pressure as it strengthens deep core muscles, back and pelvic floor and checks alignment. As your bump grows, your centre of gravity shifts and this can affect your balance. Pilates helps you readdress that change, making you more stable on your feet by strengthening your core. Tai’s training concentrates on the importance of pelvic floor exercises, relaxation, core conditioning, healthy eating and customising exercises appropriate for each stage of pregnancy. Tai has the knowledge to see you through an enjoyable pregnancy, as well as provide you with confidence and stress-free fitness to help you improve and maintain strength and fitness post-baby. Travel Special Learning holidays Of course a vacation is a time to laze around and do nothing; but they're also bursting with opportunities to find out something new, and chasing those chances could give you the most fun of all. Joanna Moorhead reports. learning holiday?" said one of my daughters, when I suggested we could combine going on vacation with supplementing her education. "Have you gone completely bonkers?" I hadn't; but what I did realise, at that moment, was the folly of being upfront in my views about how holidays could be an opportunity to impart knowledge. The trick is never to mention it, and not under any circumstances to admit or volunteer that you are aiming to weave a thread of anything educational through your spring or summer break. But the truth is, holidays are one of the best learning opportunities a parent has and finding out new things that complement what's happening in school can be a whole lot of fun when it's far from the classroom and a long way from home. In terms of focus, there are two possibilities. Either pick up on a child's existing passion — for art, perhaps, or for aeroplanes or fashion or whatever it is — or try to give them a new perspective on a subject they're finding difficult to engage with. In my own experience, I've always taken the former (easier) route; but I do sometimes think I should do more to help my kids with the parts of the curriculum they find hardest, and holidays could be the perfect time to do that.

A

Where to start? Here are some ideas. Art Children start learning about individual artists from nursery school. Pick an artist your child has talked about at school, or has seemed drawn to when you've looked at

his/her work together. Easily-accessible artists who use a lot of bright colours are ideal - think Van Gogh, Hockney, Georgia O'Keeffe. It's easy to make any holiday artorientated, since art galleries are everywhere: but if you want, you can make it about more than just museums. Try a trip to Arles in the south of France where you can see copies of Van Gogh's most famous paintings set up on permanent easels in the exact spot where he painted them, and dine at the Starry Night Café; or have a trip to Cornwall and find the landscapes and fishing village scenes made famous by the Newlyn School. Or holiday in Pont-Aven in Brittany, once home to Paul Gaugin; or head for Italy and one of the numerous artists' trails there such as the Piero della Francesca trail in Tuscany. Science and nature The simplest way to introduce nature into your holiday is to go for a walk in an undeveloped area, and to explore the green space around you. Look for bugs, birds, small animals and their habitats; if you're not very knowledgeable about these things yourself, head for a park or arboretum where there are trails and leaflets with advice on what to look out for. Star gazing is another great way to weave science into your holiday. You can see the stars from your back garden on a clear night, but a camping holiday is often the key to the most impressive display of the constellations. Wetlands centres and natural history and science museums are more great ways to introduce the subject into your vacations in an exciting way.

Literacy Literacy isn't just about books: taking your children to the places where the characters from, and authors of, their favourite books will show them a whole new side to reading. For younger children, theme parks such as Thomasland (www.draytonmanor.co.uk) or Peppa Pig World (www.peppapigworld), both open at February half term and then from March, bring their characters to life in a new way and will prompt even more interest in the books; older children will enjoy a trip to Haworth in west Yorkshire, home of the Brontes and their heartrending true story. Or head to the Jane Austen attractions in Hampshire, or to the Thomas Hardy museum in Dorset; or the Lake District for a taste of Wordsworth. History You can't go wrong with history: in fact, it's hard to have a holiday without it straying onto the margins even if you don't try. Castles, National Trust houses, museums, cathedrals, palaces; the world is heaving with history, and it only takes a tiny bit of imagination to put it into action on holiday. For something different, try taking your kids along to an event at an English Heritage or National Trust property designed to bring the history to life. Or join a child-friendly guided tour of a palace or cathedral - good guides will be full of interesting stories that spark the imagination of even the child who might think history is boring in school. And don't forget to enjoy learning on holiday yourself!

Go somewhere new

Travel Special

Hannah August, a travel professional and local Windsor mum from Move Mountains, comes up with some unusual holidays for us to dream about this year.

Morocco

South Africa

A mere three to four hour flight will deliver you to the most diverse country you can imagine, so close and yet a world away. Marrakech is the natural starting point to introduce your children to this cultural extravaganza from the mischievous monkeys and the snake charmers on Jemaa el-Fna to the vibrant souks with all their endless shopping opportunities. Within easy reach of Marrakech are the stunning Atlas Mountains – perfect for trekking in the valleys and soaking up a bit of mountain life. This amazing country offers ample opportunity for families with children of all ages to do activities together and experience a totally different culture. The trick is to avoid the baking heat of summer and make the most of those very pleasant temperatures in late winter, spring and autumn – ideal for half terms. Morocco guarantees a full battery re-charge with tales to talk about for years to come.

South Africa is a brilliant destination for a family holiday. The Cape makes a good first port of call – starting an easy self-drive route from the vibrant metropolis of Cape Town, through the winelands and on along the Garden route to the Eastern Cape will give your family the perfect introduction to Africa. There’s no real substitute to your child’s excitement as they first lay their eyes on that favourite wild animal in its own environment and South Africa’s various malaria-free game reserves make this all the more possible. Imagine visiting penguins at Boulders Beach one day and diving with sharks at Gaansbai the next, before heading on to spot your first rhino… Adrenaline-seeking families won’t be disappointed either – there’s a vast array of activities and excursions to choose from and because we’re on the same time zone there’s no real jet lag to worry about either.

Want a fabulous family holiday? Relax we’ve got it covered Meet the team, Hannah and Pascal, your Windsor travel experts!

New Z ealand The long journey to reach New Zealand may put some families off but once reached this wonderful destination is worth the air miles. The Kiwis are renowned for their indulgence of outdoor activities but there’s plenty more less heart-pumping activities for all the family to enjoy – from swimming with dolphins and whale-watching kayak tours to exploring caves filled with glow worms and canoeing. There’s also really ‘cool’ geology going on here with fascinating geysers, lovely relaxing hot springs and bubbling mud pools. And if your children are into volcanoes, look no further. The varied landscapes were used to fantastic effect in the Lord Of The Rings trilogy and enthusiasts have plenty of opportunities to revisit the scenes of the filming.

Parenting HOW TO… GET YOUR CHILDREN TO BEHAVE By Hannah Hunter Picture the scene. You’re at the supermarket and you’ve refused your child something that they want, causing them to freak out and scream loudly. You react by shouting back at them. Before long the situation is out of hand, with both of you at full-volume and people staring. ll kids will have a tantrum at some point, some simple steps can help to avoid this behaviour or at least lessen it. Trying a bit of distraction when the anger starts to build up - telling a joke, pulling a silly face - can be really effective. If it's too late for humour, then take a deep breath and a mental step back. Is their behaviour really unreasonable? Can you just ignore it and carry on with your shopping? Maybe you have a spare few minutes to put the trolley aside and take them out of the situation? It could be either out of that aisle or maybe even out of the supermarket, where you can both calm down. Positive Parenting This approach may seem like pie in the sky when faced with a screaming 3-year old, but it’s never too early to try what the NSPCC calls ‘positive parenting’. If you show love and affection to your child and praise them when they are behaving well, they will associate getting attention with good behaviour. Active ignoring is encouraged, while physical punishments like smacking should be off limits: “smacking or biting back gives a very confusing message – that it is OK to use force or to hit physically when you are angry or to make a point.”

So when you feel like you’re at the end of your tether, try to stay calm. After all, a toddler having a tantrum in the supermarket is one thing, but a screaming adult in the frozen food aisle? Not a good look… Here are some hints from leading Clinical Psychologist, Professor Tanya Byron, on how to smooth out behavioural problems, and get the best from your child. Be positive "One of the biggest mistakes we make as parents is to leave our children alone and say nothing to them when they're behaving nicely. “Ignore the behaviour you don't want. Instead, emphasise the positive with cuddles, kisses, and praise, and tell them all the things they need to hear in order for them to understand they will get attention for doing things nicely." Distraction "As soon as you feel the temper rising, distract them onto something else: a funny song, story, or 'did you see that green squirrel with orange stripes just fly past the window?'" Ignoring "Ignoring gives the message that the behaviour gets no reward and if you use this technique alongside praising every lovely behaviour, your children will get a very powerful message."

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2015

Time out "First ask your child to stop misbehaving. If that doesn't work, ask again, but more firmly. This gives the child two chances to change his or her behaviour, and if they do, you praise them. "If they refuse to stop the behaviour, or if the tantrum escalates, you go for Time Out. Take your child firmly but with no attention to a safe place where you can leave them for a period of one minute for each year of their life (i.e. three minutes for a three-year-old) up to a maximum of five minutes. You should not talk to your child through the door or give them any other form of attention during the Time Out period. "Once the Time Out period is over, explain to your child why they were Timed Out and then move on and praise them at the first opportunity.” Tantrums “Tantrums happen to all parents. They do not mean you are a bad parent. You can try to prevent them with praise and sticker charts. If that fails, you can try to distract the tantrums away. But once started, the best way to stop them is to ignore them. “Remember: distract, ignore, but do not punish." Rewards "At home, a sticker chart is a great way of encouraging good behaviour. Each time your child is good, give them a sticker. Naughty behaviour gets a 'sad face'. Points mean prizes enough stickers get them a treat." Positive example "It's straightforward but it works - your children will copy you. Swear and they will swear, smack and they will smack. Lead by example." Professor Byron’s new book The Skeleton Cupboard, is out now, published by Pan Macmillan. www.panmacmillan.com/book/ tanyabyron/theskeletoncupboard Helpful Websites: www.nspcc.org.uk www.youngminds.org.u

How to cope with your super bright child Have you ever felt your child is not being stretched enough? Perhaps they are gifted….what does this mean and what should you do about it? Is your child gifted?

Every child is unique with their own pattern of strengths and difficulties. Some children might be strong all-rounders and others particularly stronger in one area (such as English or maths). If your child is very able in an area then s/he may need special provision (at school and at home) to ensure that s/he does not become bored or frustrated. It’s worth starting by considering how your child is in themselves. If you know your child is very able, but s/he is happy and content, then the best strategy may be to sit back and enjoy your gifted child! However, if s/he is showing any of the following behaviours at school (or nursery) or at home, it is possible that s/he is gifted and not being sufficiently challenged: • Telling you s/he doesn’t like school or nursery • Challenging behaviour at home, at school, or both • Irritable and easily frustrated • Drawn towards older children or adults; may struggle to relate to peers at school [It must be noted that giftedness is only one of many possible reasons for the above behaviours.]

What is IQ? - The term “IQ” stands for “intelligence quotient”. It provides a figure to represent a person’s intelligence, with 100 being considered “average”. This means that 50% of people will score over 100, and 50% will score under 100. A score of 116-130 is described as above average, and those over 131 as upper extreme. A person’s score is stable over time. How is IQ measured? - There are various structured assessments which consist of a series of tests, the scores of which produce an overall IQ score. The most common assessment used by child psychologists is the WISC (“Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children”). This can be used with children aged 6 to 17 years. For children aged 2½ to 7, the WPPSI is used (“Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence”). How you can help your gifted child: 1. Work in partnership with school/nursery. Speak to your school’s gifted and talented coordinator. It’s a good idea to do this through your child’s teacher first. The gifted and talented co-ordinator, alongside the class teacher and headteacher, may put in place a range of things including: • A plan to ensure your child has challenging targets • Using imaginative ways of extending and broadening a gifted child’s learning • Extra-curricular activities –such as music lessons

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2015

Parenting 2. Provide as much stimulation as you can at home. Give them as many different experiences as possible (visiting new places, libraries etc.), and then get as much out of the experience as you can by talking and asking your child questions: “Which was your favourite part of the castle? What do you think it would have been like to live there 500 years ago?” Remember “down time” though, especially before bed, as some may find their minds whirring with all the new information and ideas in their heads, and struggle to wind down. 3. Gifted assessment. Assessments of giftedness can be carried out by a clinical psychologist or an educational psychologist. As well as carrying out an IQ assessment your psychologist will also take a full history, try to understand your child’s particular strengths and any difficulties, and will produce a detailed report containing recommendations. 4. Sources of further information and support. The National Association for Gifted Children (www.nagcbritain.org.uk/) has a really good website with lots of information and advice. This organisation is particularly helpful in offering guidance where a child is gifted and has an accompanying condition such as Asperger’s syndrome or dyslexia. Dr Lucy Russell, is a Clinical Psychologist at Everlief Child Psychology in West Wycombe. For an informal discussion, or to make an appointment, call Mike or Hayley on 01494 521332 or email contactus@everlief.co.uk, or visit www.everlief.co.uk.

Ed’s Reading Room Hi kids, parents, grandparents, teachers – and book lovers everywhere! I’m Ed and here is my New Year book selection for you to enjoy. The books are all available online and from good bookstores. Ed’s Reading Room is an exciting free online book and story club for primary children in homes and schools.

For Ages 5 to 7 years

For Ages 7 years plus

The Eager Elephant by Amelia Cobb (Nosy Crow £4.99)

The Royal Babysitters by Clémentine Beauvais (Bloomsbury £5.99)

Terror Town by Marcus Sedgwick (Orion £6.99)

Mountwood School for Ghosts by Toby Ibbotson (Macmillan £12.99)

ED SAYS: ‘Zoe knows how lucky she is living at the Rescue Zoo where her mother works and she also has a special secret – she can understand the animals’ growls and grunts and talk back to them. There is huge excitement when Zoe’s greatuncle arrives home from Africa with a crate containing a baby elephant. Zoe enthusiastically follows Bertie’s progress but when Bertie finds himself in danger will Zoe and her animal friends be able to rescue him?

ED SAYS: ‘When Holly and Anna read about an intergalactic holiday of a lifetime they absolutely have to go on, they decide they will have to get a job to pay for it. They soon talk themselves into being royal babysitters for a day but they are in for a shock when they realise there are six princes to be looked after – and an invasion to repel. Will the girls be able to survive the dangers and problems hurled at them during this crazy day of princesitting?

ED SAYS: ‘Elf Girl and Raven Boy, along with their friend Rat, are speeding across hills and fields on a magic flying carpet towards Terror Town. They have the Tears of the Moon but they must find the Singing Sword in order to save the world from the Goblin King. Zombies and werewolves are roaming the streets of Terror Town but there are also other scary things – and people – to contend with while attempting to complete their mission.

ED SAYS: ‘Ghosts aren’t what they used to be, according to one 473 year old teacher! So she and her spectral friends set up Mountwood School for Ghosts to promote excellence in haunting. Two young humans Daniel and Charlotte meet the likeable ghost Percy and when they realise that problems in their neighbourhood (created by humans) are seemingly insuperable they enlist the help of the phantoms of Mountwood.

‘This is a fantastic story and a real page-turner of a book. If you enjoy it as much as I did you will want to look out for the next part of Elf Girl and Raven Boy’s travels.’

‘This is a thrilling and imaginatively-written story that will have you on the edge of your seat. It is action-packed and full of humour.’

Bumps ‘n’ Babes Eat yourself pregnant Forget faddy diets Nutritionist Christine Bailey explains how to boost your chances of conceiving a healthy baby by optimising your intake of essential fertility nutrients. y research and experience as a nutritionist has shown me that nutrient dense, unprocessed food (and supplements as necessary) forms the bedrock of getting your body baby-ready and of making healthy eggs and sperm. There is now much scientific evidence to indicate that micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) play a big role in getting pregnant – both naturally and through assisted conception – with deficiencies having significant effects on fertility for both men and women. It is for this reason I wrote my latest recipe book Eat Yourself Pregnant with fertility expert Zita West (www.christinebailey.co.uk). Here are some of the top nutrients you and your partner need to give you the best chance of conceiving a healthy baby. Folic Acid Most of us will be aware of the role of folic acid in preventing spina bifida in your baby, so it is essential that you get plenty both before and during pregnancy. However folic acid together with other B vitamins (especially B12 and B6) are also vital for the production of genetic materials photo: ©dream79 - Fotolia.com DNA and RNA, not only of the egg but also the sperm. Increase your intake of leafy green vegetables, avocado and asparagus. For B12 make sure you consume sufficient protein rich foods such as fish, meat, dairy products and eggs Zinc Zinc has been widely studied in terms of

fertility for both men and women. It is an essential component of genetic material and a zinc deficiency can lead to reduced fertility and an increased risk of miscarriage. Make sure your man gets plenty too as low levels are linked to reduced sperm count. Best foods include:pumpkin seeds, lean meat and poultry, shellfish particularly oysters Selenium & Vitamin E Selenium and vitamin E are important antioxidant that helps to protect your body from damaging chemicals known as free radicals. It is therefore helpful for protecting the egg and also important for sperm formation. Munch on a handful of Brazil nuts a day to keep up your levels of selenium or snack on nuts and seeds for vitamin E. Omega 3 Fatty Acids These essential fats have a profound effect on your hormones so don’t go on a low fat diet. Eat plenty of oily fish, flaxseed, walnuts

and chia seeds. Sperm quality can be improved by having an optimum levels of these fats. Vitamin C Vitamin C is also an antioxidant, and studies show that vitamin C enhances sperm quality, protecting sperm and the DNA within it from damage. It may also improve motility of the sperm by preventing them from clumping together. Some of the best sources are citrus fruit, leafy green vegetables and berries Beta-Carotene and Vitamin A Beta-carotene is a powerful antioxidant, which helps to protect egg and sperm DNA from damage, which can affect the quality of both the egg, and sperm. Foods such as sweet potato, butternut squash and green leaf vegetables are great sources. Vitamin A is a vital nutrient for the production of healthy eggs and mucosal tissue. High doses in supplement form are not recommended during pregnancy. Iodine Iodine is essential for the production of thyroid hormones and thus important for a women’s hormonal cycle control as well as for the development of the foetus. The best sources really are sea vegetables or try increasing your intake of fish, shellfish and eggs Vitamin D Low vitamin D deficiency is significant for male fertility, as it affects the motility of the sperm the sperm nucleus. It may also be associated with lower libido. Best source is sunlight but you can get some through oily fish, eggs and mushrooms. I truly believe that if you are doing a job that you like then you never feel like you are working. I love teaching children this life skill and sewing is my passion. My husband was also very supportive when I started the business. What did you use to do? I learned sewing in college and I always made my own clothes. Since I came to Maidenhead, I briefly worked at The Wedding Centre in Marlow. I was involved in making wedding and bridesmaid dresses.

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2015

What inspired you to set up the business? My daughter and her friends were very keen to learn sewing, so I thought, why can’t I teach sewing to children and make it a business? The idea of an after-school sewing club was born. I love working with children and sewing is my passion. In 2007 I started the afterschool sewing club “Dhaaga”. Now I run sewing clubs in many schools, in and around Maidenhead. I love teaching young children and seeing the satisfaction on their faces when they have completed a project. What are your future plans? At the moment I am runing a sewing club in different schools across Windsor, Maidenhead, Cookham, Slough and Wargrave. I am aiming to start new sewing clubs in schools in Henley, Langley and Buckinghamshire in the new year. I also teach various sewing and dress making courses to adults. Currently I have two on weekdays and one evening adult sewing class. I am also hoping to start a dress-making class for adults on Saturday. We also have some exciting things lined up for the New Year as I am starting a sewing club for home-schooled children, from January 15. Children will make things for Valentines day, Mother’s day and Easter during next term.Very exciting! To find out more ring Anita on 077822 53565 or call 01628 626012

Classifieds After 16 years at home looking after her kids, Hanna Fisher took the plunge and opened WAGS pet boutique in Eton over a year ago. Candle-making parties for children and grown-ups! www.candlebyparties.co.uk

Tel: 01628 947224

Who you are and where do you live? I am Hanna Fisher. I live in Dorney with my husband Chrys, our children Tom 17, Ellie 11, Grace eight and Lola six. We also have two dogs – Alice, a Goldendoodle and Freddie, a French Bulldog, as well as a cat called Smudge.

that was a really stressful time as Chrys had to work seven days a week to build it up and we risked everything selling our home to invest in buying the business. Luckily it paid off, the pub is really popular and doing well. It also gave me some knowledge of starting a business.

Why did you set up the business/why have you changed career? I opened WAGs Pet Boutique on Eton High Street in July 2013. I love spending time with my dogs and enjoy treating them with good quality food, snacks, collars and toys. I realised that to find unique products you had to go to London and hunt out little doggy boutiques. I felt there was a gap in the market for somewhere local, sourcing and selling these kind of products. There are so many dogs owners around and it is a fairly affluent area. So WAGs was born. I came up with loads of names but it was really hard finding one that had an available web address – it was so important as we have a web shop as well. Initially I felt I wanted to open in Windsor but for a start-up business the rents there are incredibly high. When I saw a property on Eton High Street I felt it suited what we were trying to achieve, as the street is a bit quirkier with independent shops. I love being on the street, it has a real village feel to it. We have lots of local repeat customers now and we also do well with the tourists.

What inspired you to set up the business? Having been at home with pre-school children for 16 years, when Lola started school I wanted to do something for me. I had been thinking about the dog shop idea for a while and it seemed the perfect time. It was important to me, having three daughters, to show them that you can put a hold on your career and stay home to raise a family, then return to the workplace. I hope that having parents who have started their own businesses will inspire them to follow their dreams. It’s been hard juggling school runs, and both our businesses are busy at weekends so that has been a challenge. Also I am not very good at switching off, even when I’m not there is always something I am working on. We try to make sure we have a day at the weekend when neither of us works, so can spend time all together.

What did you use to do? I met my husband when I was an assistant manager in a restaurant. He came in as the new manager and from there we went on to run a couple of businesses together. I was lucky to be in a position to go parttime when Ellie was born and then stop working when Grace came along. It was important to me to be able to spend as much time as I could at home with the children as it goes so fast and I loved it. Six years ago when Lola was ten weeks old we bought The Palmer Arms in Dorney,

What are your plans for the future? It would be great to grow the business more. We have just moved over the road into a slightly bigger shop. We are planning to start a WAGs walking service where we take dogs out during the week for an hour walk if you are at work. It would be great to have a groomer attached to the business but we don't have space or parking facilities, so we are looking into getting a mobile grooming van. We also have lots of customers from across the country saying, "There is nothing like this near where we live.", so more shops may follow too. You can find WAGs Pet Boutique at 100 High Street, Eton, Windsor, Berkshire, SL4 6AG. www.wagspetboutique.co.uk
