How many of you managed to build a snowman in March? I could not believe it! Despite loving being able to get out and enjoy the snow, I trust and hope that we have seen the last of it this Spring, and we can start to enjoy some warmer weather. I hope you have also all enjoyed some quality family time over Easter, and maybe tried out some of the crafty ideas from your March/April issue. May/June is my party issue, and I have put together a useful list of contacts if you are planning a party alongside some very useful tips. Now it is spring, I have got a lovely article about gardening with your kids. I am certainly going to try out some of the ideas to be a bit more green fingered this year. Also, for those of you in search of some culture I have listed a family friendly guide to the Brighton Festival and Brighton Fringe. Many dyslexic children are very bright, but struggle to fulfil their potential in the classroom if dyslexia or other learning difficulties are not properly identified. Awards Aplenty at Creation Station ! Yes! You can have it all! 9 years ago Ann Williams was in a successful career as a business consultant working in the Financial Services industry, busy, well paid, but little time to call her own!

Bubble Cups • Small plastic drinking cups • Drinking straws • A single hole punch or sharp knife to make a hole in the side at the top of the cup to put the straw through. ( If using a knife adult only!) • Sticky Tac (if you are using a knife to make the hole.) • Thin disposable cleaning cloths (the cheaper ones work best) • Elastic bands (big enough to fit round the top of the cup) • Washing up liquid • A bowl

Preparation

You will need to make a hole in the side of the cup at the top big enough to put the straw through. If using a knife put the sticky tac on the inside of the cup where you are making the hole and push the knife through so it goes into the sticky tac and not your finger! Then you will need to cut the cleaning cloth into quarters and fill the bowl up with a little washing up liquid and water.

Making the bubble cup

Get a cup, using a elastic band secure a piece of cloth over the top of the cup. Turn the cup upside down into the soapy water just to wet the cloth, not to fill the cup. You do not need to take the cloth off. Now put the straw through the hole and blow. Make sure the cup is water free before blowing! Now watch the magic happen, you will be amazed! This is better as an outdoor activity, you can do inside but be careful as bubbles will go on the floor and may make it slippery. Have lots of fun amazing your friends and family with another great activity from the PlayMosaic team.

A bombshell was then dropped, there was a restructure and her role was redundant. So Ann was faced with the dilemma of still wanting a career but no longer willing to compromise on her own life and also planning to start a family; she started to look at opportunities to start her own business. She looked at starting her own consultancy and various franchise opportunities – but the more she researched these classic options the more she realised the necessary investment and risk were very high. The zoo, already home to hundreds of exotic animals has recently introduced two new red pandas named Tibao and Mulan. As we reach for the back door, or open a window for the first time in several months, we may spot a daffodil emerging through the cold hard ground, and just maybe the first sight of blue sky overhead - what better time to encourage your children to explore their environment and discover the world of gardening.

Involving children in gardening can be a great and fun experience for everyone regardless of age. Children can really get engrossed in planting and caring for flowers – even those with shorter attention spans! Most kids can’t get enough of the anticipation and excitement of waiting for a seed to sprout or a plant to grow, even making mud pies, as all children find pleasure in a patch of soil they can call their own.

Gardening doesn’t require a huge garden or allotment; in fact, it can actually be beneficial to start out with smaller spaces such as a window box or a restricted area. Just ensure that the allocated area gets enough sunlight and start with a small, manageable project. It needn’t cost a lot of money either – you don’t need to buy anything special or fancy, and if you grow your own fruit and veg then you’ll ultimately be making a saving! Start with margarine tubs, yoghurt pots, and any other small containers you might find lying around the house. Instead of fancy trays with separate sections, you’ll find just as much use in empty egg cartons. A lollypop stick can make a great plant label and can be used when dipping out seedlings. And what about a water pistol instead of a watering can. Who would have thoughts watering the plants could be so much fun. (hum good idea this?)

There is so much for children to learn. Explain to younger children that the seeds have popped underground and covered up to sleep, helping them understand that they need to be gentle with them and treat them with care. You don’t have to be green fingered yourself, gardening opens up a whole host of great experiments and different ways of looking at things, almost like having your own laboratory in your kitchen. A good idea to show how plants need time to grow, lots of sunshine and water is to grow three separate pots of cress. Place one in sunlight with plenty of water, one in a dark cupboard with plenty of water, and one in sunlight with no water. The difference will be there to see.

We all have a particular fondness for plants which stimulate our senses and children are no different; point out plants with soft leaves and bright flowers, aromatic herbs, scented flowers, grasses and leaves that rustle when blown, etc. These can be particularly beneficial for children with special needs and requirements. Plants attract wildlife, which can be hugely exciting. Wildflowers attract bees and butterflies, and watch out for the insects. All of them have a purpose in the garden, for example hedgehogs and toads eat the slugs and snails, and worms create holes in the soil.

Gardening isn’t a clean business but its lots of fun and easy enough for children to get to grips with. So peel your children away from the TV and explore the garden - touch the flowers, feel the leaves, and look for bugs. Once they get in the garden and explore, in time they will want to take care of the plants they have learned to love and really gain pleasure along the way.

A birthday party is the highpoint of the year for most kids so the pressure is on to get it right. The secret, as ever, is in the planning. But how do you find out which party is right for your child? We guide you through the options.

The restaurant party What is it? A meal-based party in eg a pizza restaurant, where the kids are allowed to help or watch in the food preparation Who’s it suitable for? Older kids of eight-12; children who enjoy the chance to meet and chat more than the chance to run around

The traditional party What is it? An at-home for the birthday child and friends, with traditional games like pass the parcel, pin the tail on the donkey, and musical bumps. Who’s it suitable for? Great for nursery and reception age children

The pros: It’s cheap (or at least,

it certainly can be); other parents often stay to help you out. The cons: You’ll certainly need to do a major tidy up afterwards.

Top tips to make it work:

1. Agree ground rules with the birthday child beforehand about which rooms are out of bounds 2. Have a timetable for what’s happening when 3. Think about a project, eg jewellery-making, pirate games 4. Give them chance to let off steam in the garden 5. For tea, spread a huge paper tablecloth on the floor and get them to sit around the edges of it. At the end, simply fold it up with all the rubbish inside and bin.

Don’t rely on the pizza-making/chef-watching for absolutely all the entertainment. Bring eg colouring packs or check the restaurant will provide them 4. Make sure you sort out the cake arrangements beforehand; most restaurants allow you to bring your own 5. Don’t limit yourself to chain restaurants - your local eaterie may well be more flexible than bigger establishments

The pros: Your house remains intact & lots of opportunity to let off steam The cons: It can be expensive, although some options, eg a swimming pool party or trip to an adventure playground can be good value.

Top tips to make it work:

1. If the activity is long and energetic it might be best to postpone a winter birthday party to the spring 2. Take plenty of water, squash, snacks including fruit 3. Make ABSOLUTELY sure you’ve checked all restrictions, eg height restrictions, beforehand - there’s nothing worse than finding out on the day that one of your guests is too small to participate. 4. Make sure you get parental consent forms signed well in advance if needed 5. Ensure the kids wear any safety equipment at all times.

The church hall party What is it? An indoor party in a hired venue Who’s it suitable for? Children of four plus

The pros: A lot more space than they’d have if you were at home The cons: You’ll have to leave the place spotless afterwards, and pay for any

damage.

Top tips to make it work:

1. Try to find somewhere with outdoor space as well in case it’s a lovely day. 2. Ask if you can borrow/use playgroup play equipment. 3. Have lots of help, and have food reasonably early so you can get it tidied away before the end. 4. If you’ve got the budget, consider hiring an entertainer - the extra space will make it a lot more fun. 5. Musical games, dancing, discos etc are great fun in church halls.

for babies and toddlers. In the March/April issue of Families Sussex Coast, Claire Morgan wrote a fantastic article about the Montessori Ethos. Following on from this, Paul Pillai, Director of the Montessori Place in Hove enlightens us with how you can use the Montessori Ethos at home with young children. Parents say they notice a subtle yet striking change in the mind of their child around the age of 14 or 15 months. They often say that this change happens over a matter of days, shortly after they become confident on their feet. Overnight they seem to change from babies to little children. As they stand upright, these little children seem to say “I am more like you now, dear Mummy and Daddy. Once I could only follow your actions from afar, and admire all that you could do. Now that I can stand by myself and my hands are free to work, I want to do all those things that you do each day. It is especially the ordinary that appeals to me, the routine practical tasks of our daily life”. Thoughtful parents recognise that every toddler has a deep inner drive to participate in the practical little tasks of daily life. And they take steps to prepare an environment in which their child can collaborate with them in these tasks. In doing so, they adapt their home (once again!) so that it is both welcoming and functional for little people as well as big people. Here are the kinds of things some parents say has worked for them. “We cleared out a bottom cupboard in the kitchen and all Lila’s crockery and cutlery go there. I keep a couple of small yoghurt pots in the fridge, and she fixes herself a little yoghurt snack all by herself. She has a little bin beside the main kitchen bin, and she loves filling up her bin with banana peels and yoghurt pots.”

It gives them a deep and abiding sense of confidence in themselves, a sense that life is good, and that they can add to its goodness.

The food itself was delicious, and the portions very generous. My husband took advantage of the special lunch and early menu which offers fabulous value for money and a very good selection. He very much enjoyed his steak sandwich which was perfectly cooked to order. I enjoyed a delicious burger which was served with seasoned fries and coleslaw. The children’s menu is fairly extensive, and my boys enjoyed mini fish and chips and macaroni cheese. It is all beautifully presented and perfectly cooked. What is so nice is the staff are very attentive, and our waitress Caron was very friendly and did everything she could to ensure we had a good time. In terms of child friendliness, they don’t provide crayons etc like some places, however, the whole atmosphere is very relaxed and they clearly like having family diners. A huge bonus is the large outside area, making alfresco summer dining a huge selling point. The restaurant is very spacious with a large bar area too, ideal for a large group. Cast your mind back to the Friday of Feruary half-term… it was snowing. My family, like indeed many other families, had decided to enjoy this final day of the holidays with a day out. We went, despite to forecast to Fishers Farm Park in Wisborough Green. I am a firm believer in the fact that it is not bad weather that affects a day out, but bad clothing choice. Bearing this in mind, we donned our hats, gloves, and in my case three pairs of socks, for a fabulous day out. Fishers Farm is very well prepared for all weather eventualities and puts on special events to keep your kids amused. We saw a reptile show, a magician, and just missed out on the farm show, all shown in the warm Barn Theatre. Also, the indoor play area is large enough to keep the kids amused for hours, and has 4 different zones suitable for different ages. These are homed next to the Saddle Rooms Restaurant so you can enjoy a vast array of food and drink whilst the kids burn off some energy. If you want to bring your own food, there are outdoor tables, including a covered picnic barn where you can take shelter when needs be. The outdoor play equipment also is expansive to suit all ages. My 18 month old loved the diggers in the sand, slides and bouncy pillow, whilst my older two enjoyed the crazy golf, and pirate castle. Also, the amazing Alpine Adventure offers ice-skating in the winter and in the summer is used for Roller Racers. Despite the cold, we had a brilliant day at Fishers Farm Park. There were water rides which were closed due to the weather, however, it has got us keen to go back in the warmer weather to enjoy all that Fishers Farm Park has to offer.

Emil and the Detectives

for decades, it was recently rediscovered and has now been restored. The film moves the action from Berlin to London, where Emil goes to stay with his grandmother and cousin. Thereafter, the tale of Emil’s adventures with a gang of streetwise London children faithfully follows the original plot.
