News and Views Exciting changes in store at Fishers this Spring! Fishers Adventure Farm Park in West Sussex will be unveiling a brand new animal barn this Spring. The Fishers Team has worked alongside other Farm Parks to adapt to a new ‘industry code of practice’, approved by the HSE, to ensure that all farm attractions maintain the highest level of hygiene. The intention is that visitors all over the country may still enjoy a fun, yet safe experience with animals, and Fishers are intending to be fully compliant with this vital step forward. The new Animal Encounter Barn has been specifically designed to display the animals to their best advantage incorporating the great new demonstration area, where children are encouraged to participate in the many and varied shows and animal handling sessions that will take place throughout the day. Toy libraries are perfect in these cash strapped times - go along to the session on a Friday morning from 9.15am - 11.45am and after joining, which is just £3.50 a year (2 forms of ID are needed to join), it only costs 50p to borrow a toy for a week (one or two of the bigger items are £1). If your child gets particularly attached to a toy, then you can keep it for longer, you just pay 50p for each week. As from April 2013 Rosina Wenham Dance is offering classes in modern jazz and tap at the Salvation Army Hall, Sythwood. Classes will be held on Tuesday afternoons after school starting at 4pm for the tap followed by modern jazz at 4.45pm. There will be a discount on fees if both classes are taken. After many requests they decided to start these classes for younger children. They will be prepared for exams and be able to participate in future school shows. 100th Party for Creation Station After three years of running arts and crafts birthday parties, Godalming mum Jackie Farrow is used to helping children celebrate their big day, but it was her turn to blow out the candles when she ran her 100th 'Creation Station' party recently. Jackie, who also runs toddler art classes, says " I love seeing children absorbed in their artwork at my parties, and proudly taking their creations home at the end. Papier Crafts Takes Off Samantha Lonsdale from Godalming started making paper art as a hobby when she designed her two daughters’ bedrooms. Samantha said “I couldn’t find anything that would fit in with their themes so I decided to make some art for their rooms myself. Friends then started asking me to make pieces for them as either presents or pieces for their homes. But it was when I did a couple of Christmas fairs and orders flooded in that I decided to make a business out of my hobby”. Samantha creates pictures using paper craft in a variety of themes such as vintage, country kitchen, modern and fun kids art. Little Kickers Guildford Celebrates their 7th Birthday with New Classes It is now 7 years since Paul Brooker gave up his corporate job to become a stay at home dad and launch Little Kickers Guildford. Since then the business has gone from strength to strength with classes in Guildford, Merrow, Fernhurst and Godalming. Paul says “ Since we started I have always maintained that the best advert for our classes are the classes themselves. Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life is an inspiring women-only series of events which raises millions of pounds every year to help defeat cancer by funding life-saving research. Getting girls back on track By Joanna Moorhead

few years ago, psychologist Steve Biddulph was advising parents of boys on how to raise them to avoid a battery of difficulties. Now he’s back with a formula for how to raise girls. Joanna Moorhead, a mother of four daughters, asked him what matters most. The day after I gave birth to our fourth daughter, my husband was involved in a puzzling exchange with our neighbour. The baby had been born at home overnight, so the neighbour was keen to hear the news over the garden fence. “It’s another girl,” announced my husband excitedly. “Oh,” said the neighbour, looking downcast. “And are you very disappointed?” Gary and I enjoyed telling the story, and we enjoy telling it to this day, because disappointment was truly the very last emotion we felt when our lovely little Catriona arrived to join her big sisters Rosie, Elinor and Miranda. Raising boys may, for all I know, be every bit as exciting and fun-filled as raising girls; but the truth is, I know nothing about it. I’m sure it’s similar, but I’m sure there are also ways in which it’s different: and the point is that, by the time Catriona was born, I was already quite certain that bringing up girls was a fabulous task to be taking centre-stage in my life. So, from the moment the line went blue on my pregnancy test, I was secretly hoping for another daughter. And when she finally landed, Gary and I couldn’t have been more thrilled. Fast-forward ten years, and it’s still every bit as wonderful now as it was back then. But the last few years have brought a few scary moments – and, explains psychologist Steve Biddulph, I’m certainly not the only parent of daughters to have discovered that. Fifteen years ago, Biddulph leapt to fame when his ground-breaking book ‘Raising Boys’ tackled the difficulties that were making life tough for parents of boys – rising rates of ADHD, aggressive behaviour, teenage drinking. Back

then, he says, “girls were doing just fine”. But no longer. “It all started to change about five years ago. We began to see a sudden and marked plunge in girls’ mental health. Problems such as eating disorders and self-harm, which once had been extremely rare, were now happening in every classroom and every street. And more than this, the average girl was stressed and depressed in a way she hadn’t been before.”  So now Biddulph is back with a new book aimed at parents with girls. And the message he wants to give us is that, from their earliest times, we need to bomb-proof them from what he calls “a world that seems bent on poisoning their confidence and trashing their lives”. What the onslaught is all about, says Biddulph, is the fact that advertisers have fixed their beady eyes on our pre-teen daughters: they’ve realised that little girls are extremely malleable from a marketing point of view, and they’ve gone all-out to sell them not only pink-clad dolls and sex-typed toys, but also sexualised clothes (long, long before any little girl should be thinking about looking attractive to the opposite sex) and pre-adolescent make-up.

Biddulph’s advice is simple Avoid all sex-stereotyped toys and products like the plague. From her earliest days, think not about what material possessions you are giving your daughter: instead, concentrate on how you’re making her feel. From birth to two, he explains, all that really matters to a baby girl is that she feels safe and loved. In a world where the arrival of a little girl is often seen as an invitation to start showering her with possessions – cute outfits, a pretty bedroom – he advocates forgetting all about what she has (especially if it’s of the ‘girly’ variety) and concentrating entirely on how welcome, and wanted, and loved she is in your life. The deep-rooted confidence that brings will, he promises, be something she carries with her right through her life.

From two to five, a little girl starts feeling interested in the world around her: now, she needs to be introduced to the world as an exciting and fascinating place, a place full of adventures. From five to ten it’s all about people skills – what she most needs to discover, says Biddulph, is that while her feelings are very important indeed, other people’s feelings matter too. With the coming of puberty, a girl’s thoughts shift towards what Biddulph calls ‘finding her soul’: if she is helped and encouraged to find what he calls her ‘spark’, some passion or interest that she cares deeply about and is willing to invest her time in, that will help her to find fulfilment through her entire life. It’s an empowering message: best of all, for parents like me, is Biddulph’s conviction that the family and the adults surrounding a girl are the most important elements in helping light the fire that will burn through all her days. If girlhood has sometimes seemed scary, Biddulph reminds us that it’s exciting and enriching – and guides us through the skills that will help us help our daughters, time after time. Parents urged to put hot drinks out of reach More than 300 children are rushed to hospital each week with hot drink scalds. Most of them are very young children aged just one or two. The Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT) wants parents to be aware that a hot drink left standing for as long as ten minutes can still scald a baby or toddler in less than two seconds - the same amount of time it takes to put it safely out of reach. Here are their top tips for preventing burns: * A baby’s skin is 15 times significantly thinner than an adult’s. Make sure you put your baby down before picking up your hot drink. Then you don’t have to worry about them wriggling or grabbing it. * Put your hot drink down well out of reach from little hands. Think of safe places in your home for hot drinks where you know your child can’t reach. * Don’t pass hot drinks over a baby or young child’s head in case it spills on them. * Medical professionals count bath water scalds as one of the worst injuries a child can suffer. Put the cold water in the bath first and top up with hot. If you put the hot in first, there’s a danger a toddler could climb or fall in when your back is turned and be badly scalded. * Hair straighteners can get as hot as your iron and stay very hot for up to eight minutes after they are switched off. Switch them off after use and put them out of children’s reach and sight. Don’t leave them to cool over a door handle. * Keep the kettle at the back of the worktop and try to use the back rings of the cooker to avoid little hands grabbing them. Three in four parents unaware of childhood poisoning risk A recent survey from the Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT) has found that 73% of parents with children under 5 mistakenly believe that child safety tops make medicines and toxic cleaning products child-proof. The stark reality is that they slow children down but some three and fouryear olds can open them in seconds. Every day 70 under 5s are rushed to A&E with suspected poisoning and 15 are admitted to hospital. In a third of all homes, children under 5 can find cleaning products under the kitchen sink, while in 1 in 5 homes they are on the floor by the toilet. In a quarter of homes, under 5s can find medicines in unlocked bathroom cabinets. Katrina Phillips, Chief Executive, CAPT commented: “Child safety tops are never totally child-proof. Anti Bullying Strategies By Andy Roberts 1. Walk with Awareness, Calm, Respect, and Confidence People are less likely to be picked on if they walk and sit with awareness, calm, respect, and confidence. 2. Setting a Boundary/Using your voice If a bully is following or threatening your child in a situation where she or he cannot just leave, your child needs to be able to set a clear boundary. Teach them to speak firmly and with confidence, put their hands up like a fence and say “STOP!” 3. Using Physical Self-Defence as a Last Resort Learning physical self defence helps most children become more confident, even if they never have to use these skills in a real-life situation. Q. How do you give a victim of bullying the confidence to face the bully, look them in the eye, and back them down? A. Teach the victims how to defend themselves against physical attack, and the rest will follow. Most martial arts programmes rely on striking the attacker with punches, kicks, knees, and elbows. There is no way to control the level of violence: “You punch me, and I’ll punch you harder”. This has no place in the playground and will always do more harm than good. It is unnecessarily violent and rightfully unacceptable to schools and parents. It can even turn victims into bullies. At Andy Roberts BJJ, we take a different approach. Have you got a Carbon Monoxide Alarm? You can’t see it, taste it or smell it but Carbon Monoxide can kill quickly and with no warning. It is the most toxic substance you’ll come into contact with in your daily life and it kills 50 people and seriously injures nearly 200 in the UK each year. The common perception is that CO poisoning causes death, but also multiple low level poisonings can lead to short term memory loss, forgetfulness and even paralysis and brain damage. Bill Derham, from the Brix Group, advises that common sources of carbon monoxide in the home include faulty central heating systems, gas appliances and fires. Blocked flues and chimneys mean the gas can’t escape and is inhaled by the unsuspecting individual. Oil and solid fuels such as coal, wood, petrol and oil can also produce carbon monoxide. What are the symptoms? Carbon monoxide symptoms are similar to flu, food poisoning, viral infections and simply tiredness and include headaches, dizziness, nausea, breathlessness, collapse and loss of consciousness. An altered state of consciousness or convulsions can occur in infants. Other warning signs to look out for are that your symptoms only occur when you are at home; others in your household are experiencing symptoms (including your pets) and they appear at a similar time; symptoms tend to be seasonal (eg. headaches during the winter when indoor heating is used more often). How can I keep myself and my family safe? -Have chimneys and flues checked regularly -Make sure gas appliances and heating systems especially boilers and gas fires are inspected every year by a Gas Safe registered engineer -Fit audible carbon monoxide alarms - available from £15 at your local DIY store, supermarket or from your energy supplier -Never run cars, motorbikes or lawnmowers in a closed garage.
