News and Views Pledge to Raise a Grand for Brain Tumour Research! Did you know that brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer? Yet brain tumour research receives just 1% of the national spend on cancer research. The blood-brain barrier does a fantastic job protecting the brain... but it’s very success provides a huge challenge to the medical community as it is also effective in stopping most standard cancer drugs from treating brain tumours. Brain Tumour Research have teamed up with the Dr Hadwen Trust to fund specific research into crossing the blood-brain barrier which will cost £180,000. Stephen Realf passed away from a brain tumour in August 2014, aged just 26. His sister, Maria has launched an e-petition calling for greater funding for brain tumour research. The petition has already received over 34,000 signatures however they need 100,000 signatures by 3rd February 2016 for the issue of lack of funding for brain tumour research to be considered for debate in Parliament. New Organ for St Catherine’s Bramley

New Children’s Online Magazine

St Catherine’s Bramley was surprised and absolutely delighted to be approached by Mrs Evelyn Greaves with a most generous offer to donate her three-manual organ to the school. Evelyn Greaves was a latecomer to the organ, having studied the piano in her teenage years. Her natural talent for playing the organ was recognised when she achieved distinctions in the four highest ABRSM exam grades.

Jungle School is a new fun and educational online magazine aimed at children aged 4-7 years. Jungle School is designed to make learning into an exciting and colourful story that children will love!

Matthew Greenfield, Director of Music at St Catherine’s School said, “This is an extraordinarily generous gift from Mrs Greaves that will benefit generations of girls for the future. When they first saw and heard it played, the looks of amazement on the faces of the Generous benefactor Mrs Evelyn Greaves Prep School girls spoke volumes: the organ will be an inspiration to many a budding musician as we encourage more girls of all ages to learn to play this king of instruments.” The 12th Jennifer Bate Organ Academy will be held at St Catherine’s School from Wednesday 13th to Sunday 17th April. This is a wonderful opportunity for young women organists, aged 13-21, to develop their all-round musicianship. Watts Studios to Open in January The studios of the celebrated Victorian artist, George Watts, and his wife, the designer Mary Watts, in Compton will open to the public for the first time on 26 January following a major restoration generously supported by a £2.4 million lead grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. From January, visitors to Watts Gallery – Artists’ Village will be able to experience the restoration of G F Watts’s studio as the artist left it, one of the most dramatic spaces created by a nineteenth-century artist, to be open to the public with its original collection conserved and returned. Many of the artist’s most important paintings on display in neighbouring Watts Gallery were created in this space. Take a moment to think about all the activities in a typical week – whether it’s with your family, when you help at school or take part in sport – and write down all the skills you use doing them. Next, list the skills you’ve used in previous jobs and life situations. Now choose five core skills you enjoy using most and would like to use in your future career. It’s crucial to identify these so you’re playing to your strengths and can enjoy work. Finally, think about how those skills can be used in different working environments – for example, can your project management skills be used to set up a consulting business helping others with big projects? It’s now time to check out online job boards and research the type of skills employers are looking for and see if any of your newly acquired or rediscovered skills match. arents seeking education for their young children will quickly learn about the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), the UK national curriculum framework for children from birth to age 5. Introduced in 2008 to recognise the importance of this stage of life, the programme provides a research-based framework to guide early childhood professionals in the delivery of consistent and high quality environments for all children in pre-school settings. It is required in all UK pre-schools and registered early years providers, such as, playgroups and childminders. EYFS is developmental in approach, built around the natural way children grow and learn, commonly referred to as the ‘Characteristics of Effective Learning’. The framework starts with the notion that the most effective learning takes place when children are engaged in authentic play and real activities through which they can make sense of the world around them by engaging, talking, thinking and interacting with other children and adults. It acknowledges and values the individuality of each child, while recognising that children need to feel safe, secure and happy in order to make friends, learn and understand the world around them. In practical terms, this means that children will learn through play and active explorations in indoor and outdoor settings. In following their interests and feeling free to build on their natural curiosity, they will feel happy, safe and secure at school and have ‘ownership’ of their classroom. Working individually and with others, they will develop teamwork and creative and critical thinking skills. As opposed to traditional teacherdirected activities, children will be consulted about what they are doing and interested in, which guides the adults in planning activities and themes which are motivating for them. With child initiated play, students will develop independence, curiosity, resilience and the ability to think and reflect on what they are doing. But what about literacy and numeracy? When will my child start reading? She can already count to 100! All parents are concerned that their children will enjoy school, but they also want them to progress to the next stages of learning. The flexibility of the EYFS framework allows for all children to have their unique needs supported and to be challenged appropriately. The framework is structured to allow them to move through different stages at their own rate. This framework also allows for the following of individual interests and learning styles, so that differentiated pathways of progress can be planned for. For instance, in one of our classrooms, we noticed there were a few reluctant boy writers – they were more interested in other types of play. But we also observed they were interested in Minecraft. We produced a variety of photos and materials on Minecraft to entice them. Very quickly, the boys relocated these materials to an area on the floor and began cutting them out and making books to take home, adding their own letters and words for the text. This proved tremendously successful

How should parents go about finding an early childhood provider for their children? All EYFS settings – nursery, childminder, playgroup, pre-school or early childhood schools – are inspected by the Office for Standards in Education (OFSTED) or by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) which is also monitored by OFSTED according to the guidelines set out by the EYFS. The most current reports for each setting can be found at http://reports.ofsted.gov. uk. It should be borne in mind, however, that an OFSTED report is a ‘snapshot’ and cannot give a full picture of an EYFS setting. Parents should visit the provider to see it in operation. When doing so, the following are some useful questions to ask yourself in assessing whether this is the right environment for your child: • How do the adults engage with the children? • How do the adults follow and build on the children’s interests? • Are the children active and busy or rigidly controlled and directed? • Is there a range of varied and stimulating resources readily accessible to the children? • Does it feel like a safe and secure environment?

What should parents look for? A nurturing early years environment will have a good ratio of adults to children. The classroom itself should have different interest areas with a wide variety of activities for exploration and with the outdoors play area readily accessible. There should be a continuous happy burble of activity. Watch how the adults engage. They should stand back and allow the children time to explore, knowing when to intervene, yet remain in the background to provide support and scaffolding for developing the child’s ideas. Families for whom English is not the first language will also need additional settling-in support around language issues. Whilst young children pick up languages quickly, research shows that the best way to learn a new language is on the strong foundation of the mother tongue. There are many factors to consider in finding the right setting for your child and at times the decision making process may seem overwhelming. Given this, possibly the most important piece of advice to bear in mind is: if in doubt, ask. You can never have too much information and, moreover, a friendly, informative and enthusiastic answer from an Early Years practitioner will tell you a lot about the people working in that setting and bodes well for any future partnership with them. Children’s Day nurseries initially came about to help working parents to continue with their careers in the confidence their child is being well cared for. Over the years there have been many changes to the expectations of nurseries expanding their role from simply one of great carers to educators with the introduction of the Early Years Foundation Stage. Parents/Carers enjoy many advantages in using nursery care. We know from our own research parents/carers are looking for four core goals for their child. We have seen a shift in the pattern of care over the years. When we first started in childcare 22 years ago it was common for children to require full time care. As time has past we have seen the extension of maternity leave and greater return to work flexibility from employers. All of this has changed parents/carers needs and we now see care typically over 3 or 4 days per week. The Government recognising this has proposed 30 hours of funded care for working parents making returning to work financially more advantageous. So how much care is best for your child? Our experience has shown children who regularly attend nursery for 3 days or more are better settled and fully benefit from everything a nursery has to offer. Separation is often one of the first major challenges as parents we have to face but this change is overcome with regular routines in place and clear boundaries set. As a simple rule of thumb the more frequently a child attends the easier it is to get them used to the routines and understand the boundaries. All of this helps with the achievement of development goals and in managing behaviour as children grow to understand the world around them.

o you have a busy family life? Maybe you have considered the idea of getting an Au Pair to help you. But then maybe you dismissed the idea because you don’t really know what an Au pair does or how it really works? Here’s a summary that might make you reconsider that option!

What does and au pair do? Au Pairs are young people from other countries (some agencies place Au Pairs from outside of the EU) who like caring for children and who want to come to the UK to experience our culture and improve their English. Most of them are between the ages of 19 and 25 and they have varied levels of childcare experience. They come to a family and help out with childcare, light housework and things like walking the family dog. In exchange the host family will provide them with a comfortable room and all their food plus some pocket money each week. The average au pair will help their family for 25 hours a week plus 2 nights babysitting for approximately £80-£90 pocket money. Au Pairs can have sole charge of children over the age of two or can also help a Mum with younger children (and be another pair of hands!). The family will include the Au Pair in many of their activities and support them in their quest to learn English. Most Au Pairs will enrol in a local college to study English and will quickly make friends with other Au Pairs in the area. Long term Au Pairs tend to apply to come in August/September for 6 – 12 months. You can also get an Au Pair to start at other times but there may not be as many applicants to

It’s very important however to acknowledge that this a two way street and that you will need to invest in each new Au Pair that comes to your family. These girls and boys are all individuals with different skills and qualities. They are not nannies and will often need guidance and support to help them adjust to their role with your family. Of course they will also want to be made welcome and supported by you all. Having the right expectations will make sure the Au Pair experience will not only be a great help to your family in a practical sense it will also be very rewarding to help a young person in their personal development. Confidence is just as important in life – if not more so - than that brace of A grades. It’s vital to emotional wellbeing and something most of us hope our kids will develop. But how can we instil this feeling, particularly if it doesn’t come naturally to them?

Accept your child’s starting point

Educating for Confidence from Nursery to Sixth Form

Not all of us are confident by nature (life would be boring that way…) and whilst we can encourage self-belief, transforming a shy child into the ‘life and soul of the party’, is rarely realistic. Accept your child’s personality and ‘starting point’; it might be different to yours, or others’, and that’s absolutely fine.

Don’t force things Your child needs to trust you when taking on new experiences and forcing them into something they’re very uncomfortable with damages that trust.

Instead, take small steps to encourage confidence

Find opportunities to stretch just a bit beyond what your son or daughter is happy doing at any one time.

Work out what their fear is Pin down their concerns – perhaps it’s that they’ll make a fool of themselves, won’t be able to find you at the end of the party or won’t be understood.

Address their concern and provide reassurance that they will be okay, that what others think doesn’t really matter and that you’re there for them.

Keep praise special Keep praise for when it’s truly warranted and focus on effort rather than just results. This way, when they do achieve something amazing, your comments will have more impact.

Find their forte If your child doesn’t do so well at school, this can erode their self-esteem. Seek opportunities for them to try activities out of school and highlight positive personality traits, such as being especially kind or a good organiser.

Step back sometimes and let them ‘have a go’ Children benefit from finding their own solutions, doing things their way sometimes and taking sensible risks. Guide and advise but try not to jump in and take over too quickly.
