Cat with top job Chartwell, the family home of Sir Winston Churchill in Kent, has just welcomed its newest recruit - a marmalade cat. The Churchill family requested that there would always be a marmalade cat named Jock, with a white bib and four white socks, in comfortable residence at Chartwell when they left their home to the National Trust in 1966. Jock V1 was rescued by Croydon Animal Samaritans before being adopted by Chartwell’s house and collections manager, Katherine Barnett. Mum Amie – new website for mums April saw the launch of a free-to-use website enabling local mums to meet up with other mums – using the same sort of compatability profiles used by dating websites. Mums can find other mums using criteria such as location, parenting style, interests and children’s ages. Aimee Foster, co-director of Mum Amie, says ‘Being the first of my friends to have a baby, I realised that I needed to find some mum friends but I found the whole process difficult and frustrating. I now have a great network of mum friends and I wondered if I could make the process easier for other mums.’ The website also aims to help single mums, mums in same sex relationships and mums who have children with disabilities find each other for friendship and support. Caterham’s shopping refurbishment Church Walk Shopping Centre in Caterham is undergoing a major refurbishment of the mall area. The works, which began in late March, will replace the existing mall paving, seating, lighting, planters and drainage. Meningitis Jab Infants from 2mths of age will soon be immunized with the meningococcal B (MenB) vaccine. Meningitis is fatal in about one in ten cases, with infants under one year old being most at risk. This would make the UK the first country in the world to implement a nationwide vaccination programme.
NT cafes get even better The newly refurbished Granary Café has just re-opened at Polesden Lacey. Bryony Cowley, 7 yrs old from Brockham celebrated the opening as winner of the ‘design a cake competition’ with her imaginative interpretation of the yellow painted mansion. Four other National Trust cafes in the south-east have also undergone makeovers: Sissinghurst Castle, Chartwell, Red House and Basildon Park. The new menus feature an emphasis on seasonal food, greater variety and more locally sourced produce.

Is obesity normal? In the annual report on the state of our health, Professor Dame Sally Davies, Chief Medical Officer (CMO) reveals that one third of children under 18 are overweight or obese. In one study, 77% of parents of overweight children did not recognise that their child was overweight. Professor Davies said “I am increasingly concerned that society may be normalizing being overweight. ” The report highlights the fact that in children aged 11-18, almost a third of the added sugar in their average diet comes from soft drinks. A tax on sugar would be one way to regulate sugar consumption. The CMO’s report is available on www.gov.uk

Surrey Hills - new family events The Surrey Hills Society promotes the enjoyment and care of the Surrey Hills AONB and runs a variety of events, walks and talks and supports conservation projects in the area. Bringing health to the community - the story of one reader’s initiative
In January 2013 I was inspired with a friend of mine to begin a weekly event for women where they could look after all aspects of their wellbeing – fitness, diet and mental/spiritual health, which would also serve to support a charitable cause, helping women trapped in slavery around the world. It was an idea we had mooted quite a while before, but due to busy schedules it did not happen. In December 2012 I suffered a stillbirth, and the event gave me a moment to pause and re-evaluate life. I thinned out my schedule and made space for helping others – an important way of healing from tragedy and refocusing on what is truly important. I have found focusing on others and doing good in the world hugely healing in my own personal recovery. My friend, Caroline Culverwell (dietician) and I (fitness instructor) set a program and a date and asked some wonderful ladies in our church community to work voluntarily with us and serve the women in our local community. We have now been operating for 1 year with a team of 14 volunteers and have raised £5500. Many professionals – nurses, psychologists, life coaches, physios, fitness instructors, cooks and other helpers give up their time to help women in our local community and around the world. We meet most Thursday evenings from 7.45pm at Redhill Baptist Church, Hatchlands Road, Redhill RH1 6AE. Ladies are welcome to attend all or any sessions, which include diet, zumba, toning, mindfulness, relaxation, mind/spirit study. We ask for a £5 donation. Sally Townsend www.tranzform.org

Do you know about nutrition? Cookery and nutrition teaching has changed in schools over the last 30 years and today’s parents haven’t all had a grounding in balancing their children’s diets. Most parents (89 percent) feel they lack public information on how to give their babies / children the best nutritional foundation. Well over half of parents (69 percent) are not clear about protein, carbohydrates and fats and how to balance them.
THE SPECTRE OF SALT A quarter of parents (26 percent) started adding salt to their children's food for flavour before their children turned three years old. Nutritionist Yvonne Bishop-Weston commented, "Babies and young children need to avoid salty foods and added salt as
their kidneys could become damaged as they are too immature to process it. Developing a liking for salt could also contribute to future high blood pressure and associated health problems. 75% of the salt we eat comes from pre-prepared foods we buy so reading the packaging label to look out for high salt levels is also important."

Childcare Vouchers – Don’t miss out! In Autumn 2015 Government proposals introducing a new “Tax-free childcareâ€? scheme are expected to take effect. Under the new arrangements, parents will set up an account with NS&I (Government-backed National Savings) and will pay into this account to purchase childcare vouchers from their net pay. The Government will then top up the childcare voucher account with a 20% contribution (equivalent to basic-rate tax relief) up to a maximum of ÂŁ2,000 per child per year, until the child reaches the age of 12yrs. The current scheme (ie until 2015) is offered through employers by “salary sacrificeâ€?, which means employees receive childcare vouchers instead of a portion of their gross pay. This simple swap saves each parent up to ÂŁ933 a year in tax and National Insurance contributions. Employers also enjoy savings in their NICs. Childcare vouchers in their current form remain valid until a child reaches age 15. Although some parents may prefer to switch to Tax-Free Childcare, many will be
better off using the current childcare voucher scheme. For example, basic-rate taxpayers currently receive savings of 32% with childcare vouchers, while higher-rate taxpayers receive savings of 42%. Although Tax-Free Childcare allows parents to claim relief on a higher amount of childcare, the savings are capped at 20%. Parents with modest childcare costs are likely to be better off under the current system.

The good news is that existing members of the current childcare voucher scheme will be allowed to remain in the scheme following the 2015 changes. However, if they move to a new employer they may be considered to have left the scheme and may be forced to switch to the new arrangements.
What action should parents take? Parents who aren't already using childcare vouchers should ask their employers to set up a scheme now, rather than waiting until the new scheme is launched in 2015. Employers enjoy National Insurance savings from the current scheme, so it is in their interest to set up a scheme before the 2015 deadline.

Our Events Calendar on pages 20-21 and our Nature Notes events on page 19 are full to bursting. Here we’ve highlighted some of the best days out in May and June and included a list of the local Fetes and Fairs to put in your diary (see over). Contact details are in the Events Calendar. With Bank Holidays on the weekends of 3-5 May and 24-26 May, there’s lots happening on those weekends. A very special place with a rare event on Sunday 4th May is The Llama Park in East Sussex. It’s Alpaca Shearing Day! From 10am to 5pm there will be shearing displays, spinning displays and (hopefully) some baby alpacas newly born. Entrance is £5 for adults and £4 for children. On Sunday and Monday of the same weekend The Weald and Downland Museum has its Food and Countryside Show, including some hands-on children’s cookery sessions. Witness mediaeval life in the Living History Camp, see what foods mediaeval people ate, try on a knight's helmet and hold a sword, visit an archer and even meet the gong farmer and his mediaeval toilet! See a working watermill grind corn into flour. The Museum is on a 50-acre site in the South Downs nr Chichester and recreates agricultural life over the last 600 years. Lambs and bluebells should still be in evidence in early May. In addition to seeing the animals at Bocketts Farm, Fishers Farm Park, Hobbledown and Tulleys Farm animal patch, there is a ‘pop up’ farm at Claremont Park on 10th May, 10.30am-4.30pm – a fun day for all the family with a wide variety of farm animals. Children will be able to learn about the animals and have an opportunity to stroke and groom them. May half-term is a great time to visit the Look Out Discovery near Bracknell. As well as the 90 hands-on science and nature activities, its BIG Dinosaur Show starts on 17th May and runs every weekend until 1st September. The Discovery Centre is surrounded by 1,000 hectares of Crown Estate woodland with nature walks, cycle trails and an adventure play area, so it makes a day out full of possibilities. Don’t forget Father’s Day on 15th June! If you are looking for a day out for Dad, one of the best we’ve found is at Polesden Lacey near Dorking. Not only is there jazz being played (one of their ‘Lazy Sundays’) but its Beer Festival will be fun too, and on the same day (and almost every Sunday in May and June) The Big Tree Climbing Days take place, suitable for all 6+yr olds! Tickets for the Big Climb cost £15.50 for a onehour session, to include tuition, safety equipment, harness etc and an optional zipwire to get you down. Alternatively there is gift making at Emmetts Garden, Canine Capers at Hatchlands or Classic Cars at Claremont for Dad. Special Big Summer days out include Marwell Zoo, Paulton’s Park in the New Forest, Drusilla’s in East Sussex to meet Hello Kitty and Legoland Windsor for their new Pirate Shores.

The second part of Nadia’s class is more social, with light snacks and drinks - and a few spoken exercises as part of the fun. Nadia’s new French club, Les Petits Loups, will take place Nutley Lane, Reigate. Lessons are very informal and everybody can join in. Families can attend at reduced rates. For those parents who learned French for years yet don’t feel able to speak it – you just need commitment and some perseverance and in return Nadia will ensure that everyone improves and learns.

Huge Hedgehog Finds New Home The British Wildlife Centre (BWC)
near Lingfield has just received their biggest arrival yet. A giant hedgehog sculpture, built to mark the second series of David Attenborough’s 'Natural Curiosities', has been donated to the Centre by UKTV. In the 1950s the UK hedgehog population was an estimated 30 million. Numbers have plummeted and some estimates put the current number at less than a million. The British Wildlife Centre opens every weekend and daily during state school holidays, Saturday 24 May to Sunday, 1 June. A hedgehog keeper talk takes place at 1pm daily during open dates. In a poll of over 2,000 people, of those living in the South East, the National Trust found that 34% often feel ‘starved’ of nature. And over 45% of people in the South East have noticed a decline in the variety of birds they see in their area. The National Trust recently commissioned an album of ‘tweet music’ to recreate the nation’s best-love songbirds. The sounds are by Jason Singh, vocal sculptor and ‘beatboxer’, who visited National Trust properties for his inspiration. Academic research found that listening to birdsong not only makes people calmer but boosts positivity. The house and gardens at Polesden Lacey, our local NT estate, are now open daily.

Priory Farm’s Discovery Walk in
South Nutfield is a lovely place to take children to have fun in the countryside. Children can follow an optional Nature Trail: a picture-based one for younger children and a factgathering quiz for nature detectives up to 12yrs.
